Getting ready for the DG Photo Contest, 2005

Albany, OR(Zone 8a)

Well, I am offended!
LOL (kind of)
We started a Dahlia Forum this year and I would like to see a Dahlia section for this contest.
I think all new forums should have a photo contest at least their first year. Being the first year, it can be some interesting pictures.
But this is just my comments. I just have so many dahlia pictures and would love to enter them in the contest.

What about People& places category?
Kaleem

There's just way too many great suggestions here, and I'm trying to get it all straightened out. If anybody's category was missing, please help me out by bringing it up.

please don't bury it inside a big paragraph, because honestly I might miss it.

Since entries have already begun, is there a guideline on size of pic? I'm assuming 800x600 is always okay, and anything larger than 999 pixels on one side will be reduced in format.

Spokane Valley, WA(Zone 5b)

Please make these changes/additions to the Vegetable Category (per Melody's suggestions):

Quoting:
We might even include fruits...Make it Fruits and Veggies

Best veggie patch, orchard or berry patch
Biggest tomato
Strangest veggie or fruit
Harvest basket (inclusive of all edibles)

Then add to those choices, Edible Plants in Flower (which would include the flowers before and/or after harvest)

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

Miscellaneous has no place now for miscellaneous pictures

Wildlife doesn't belong with Pets = Elk, Bobcats, etc should not compete with Chihuahua puppies or cats

I understand there has to be limits on the categories...and your patience here is appreciated

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

Dave, can you just add a judging category under Misc. for "Other" and 2 under Pets, 1 for "Pets" and 1 for "Wildlife", I don't think the wildlife would compete well with all the cute pet pics either.

Can we have these judging categories under daylilies:
Best Spider/UF
Best Use in a mixed planting
Best Overall

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Dave,

Can we have a category for best of:

"Dave going insane over this whole photo contest idea and running amok"?

Pirl

Edited for missing words.

I have tried to read all related info about the contest and I have one remaining question.

Is retouching allowed?

As in airbrushing, etc. I have seen some beautiful work on a number of photos and applaud everyones ability to do the work - but I don't have much experience in that field and would feel at a disadvantage if I entered and had that kind of competition.

Right now, I'm still a bit confused about all the many catagories - seems a bit much to me - but I'm working my way through.

DAVE

SORRY ABOUT THE CAPS, BUT YOU MUST OF MISSED MY LAST POST.....WHAT CATAGORY CAN I ENTER PLAIN OLE PERENNIAL FLOWERS IN????

Dave,

Many good suggestions, but overwhelming?

It's YOUR website. Don't ask for suggestions. Just TELL us what YOU want.

YOU'RE the one we look up to. ( Dave For President, remember?) You can't please everyone. If someone's wants are omitted, so be it.

My two cents.

Phoenix, MD(Zone 7a)

I too would like the people kids --- for the "moment caught"
yes cutest baby way to hard they are all cute but a neat pic of kids moments caught on film WOW got those here!

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Please Dave, put in ( Wildflowers )

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Yes, Wildflowers, please?
(I am giving up on Pointy, lol.)

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

How about these entries for Miscellaneous?

Garden Flowers
Scenery (Vistas and Views)
Weather
Wildlife
Wildflowers
Other

I've handled everything that came up in this thread since my last post.

I'm not going to do baby pictures; I'm sorry.

Everybody has until 3:00pm today (central time) to figure out any new categories. After that, no new additions.

dave

I split up pets and wildlife, so they are separate now.

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

Dave .. it was a 'people' category that ilovejesus99/Sandy had requested .. not specificly, 'babies'.

Thanks, for the division between pets & wildlife ...

- Magpye

Phoenix, MD(Zone 7a)

yes people which can include the shorter version (children) again not a cutest baby contest maybe a great moment caught or great shot with children or taller version (people) in them

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Dave!

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

Dave .. Merely a suggestion ...

Perhaps a number can be posted right alongside each of the (applicable) categories .. that will indicate the # of 'sub-divisions' within a category .. Or, the sub-division list indented immediately, easily visible .. below the main category (?)

Wondered if it may assist somewhat in determining the 'correct' category/s for submission ...

Can you not veiw other entries? I guess not just a thought --- would love to have seen what has been entered by others not just myself.

Starkville, MS

IS RETOUCHING ALLOWED?

If so, I'm outta of here 'cause I can't "airbrush worth a flip! lol!

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

'bu' ..

The entries aren't available to 'view' .. until Dave determines & announces the end of the submission/acceptance period ... Then, everyone is allowed & prompted to view ALL the submitted pics, and to begin voting ...

Hopin' also, that Dave will keep the submitters info from all view .. to keep things equal & fair for everyone interested ...

- Magpye

I'm not going to enforce not retouching, but I think it'd be better if people didn't do that, in order to be fair.

dave

Phoenix, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks Mags!!!!

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

Thanks Dave!!

White Lake, ON(Zone 4b)

Under Container Gardening, could you please add the same categories for judging as last year, Dave.

Container Gardening
categories for judging

Best for Sun
Best use of one color
Best Color Combo
Best for Shade
Best Original Container
Best Overall
Most Creative

sanannie, your judging categories are implemented!

I agree that it would be better and more fair if the photographer’s name could be kept anonymous. Easy for me to say but I realize perhaps tough to do.

Brown City, MI(Zone 5a)

I think it would be a good addition to the Daylily Category to add:
Best Double

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

Ahh, heck 'bu' ..
You're most welcome.
Let me see if I can get my vacuum started. Fallin' behind here.
I'll check back in later ..

Kerhonkson, NY(Zone 5a)

How do I get into the photo contest? I don't see the link ...

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

crockny ... was posted up above, in a prior post.

But, entries are already being accepted, here > http://davesgarden.com/contest/2005/

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

I've already submitted one photo which had some distracting background air-brushed out. Can I replace it with the original in some way?

Ann

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

Ann,
You can go back to the category you entered the pic in, select the "view your entries" and then edit or delete the entry.

Edited to add: the edit function is only to edit the wording, I believe. You would need to delete your entry and then resubmit the other picture.

FYI only - I’ve already “re-uploaded” without the copyright.

Kerhonkson, NY(Zone 5a)

Is landscape different from scenery (in miscellaneous)?

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

Maybe Scenery in Miscellaneous should be changed to Views and Vistas ??

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

Where do trees/conifers go, if any place? Thank you.
