Getting ready for the DG Photo Contest, 2005

Phoenix, MD(Zone 7a)

good one Nap!

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

I think the bouquets category is all seasons, not just autumn. It could be combined with flowers and/or individual flower categories, i.e. a bouquet of lilies in the lily category.

Northern California, CA

There's a pretty active community here on Dave's of Succulent & Cacti lovers. They really don't fit in any of the prior years' categories and I'd like to see a place in the new scheme for them. I am glad to see a category for Orchid Cacti, which was recognized several months ago with its own forum.

Sultan, WA(Zone 8a)

I was just thinking. My favorite family pictures and portraits are always done in gardens. I think a category for that would be great.

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

I assume all pics are taken this year??? I will go crazy picking photos because I took so many, so I for one need a limit. Looking forward to more info here (my first year to do this).

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

The way it's worked in the past is that any picture that you have taken is ok to submit as long as you have not entered it in any other DG photo contest. That may work this year too, as we are working on some new categories. I know that that I have a few images that never seemed to quite fit before, and from the responses to the thread, several of you had some 'orphan' shots in years past too.

In the veggie section, I propose to do away with the pumpkin section entirely...I don't think we've ever had an actual pumpkin entered, in fact...I believe one year, we gave the prize to a cushaw squash..or something like that.

We might even include fruits...Make it Fruits and Veggies

Best veggie patch, orchard or berry patch
Biggest tomato
Strangest veggie or fruit
Harvest basket (inclusive of all edibles)

I think these sections pretty much cover it...we have such a small group here in comparison who grow edibles, any more categories would be overkill.

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

For the orphan shots we need a Miscellaneous category. I know I have at least one picture that would fit there.

Mel, the veggies suggestions look good to me

I think these two definitely need to be included:

Miscellaneous
Animals

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Yeah, Miscellaneous is where we could enter pointy things, right?
:-)

Floridian, would you want an Animals category seperate from Pets and Wildlife? How would it be different?

White Lake, ON(Zone 4b)

How about a category for peonies?

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

Oh you're right, since we already have the BBBB and wildlife categories then 'animals' would be a bit redundant.

Okay then pare my extras to just Miscellaneous...LOL

Northern California, CA

Quoting:
Yeah, Miscellaneous is where we could enter pointy things, right?

That's a common misconception about "pointy" things:

All cacti are succulents.
Not all succulents are cacti.

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

Do you have Cacti/Succulent categories (like Mel did with Vegetables) in mind? I think they'd be a great addition...

Kernersville, NC(Zone 7a)

Is there a section for before and after photos? I have seen some amazing redos, including garden areas, hardscapes, house makeovers, etc and I love to see before/after shots

Bartlesville, OK(Zone 6a)

I am interested in doing this too. Watching for the kick off.....

Susan
=^..^=

Kerrville, TX(Zone 8a)

Ecstatically waiting......................I think more categories the better.
Carol

Kerrville, TX(Zone 8a)

Would reptiles be under wildlife?
Carol

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

I'm still kind of new here, but is there a 'Best Indoor Plant' category? Or would that fit in another?
Andy P

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

This is my very first time to be in a photo contest here at DG! So this maybe a silly question, but except the notaritety you get from winning a contest is there another prize?

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Happenstance,

Oh no, I meant simply pointy things, not necessarily related to plants at all. Just a strange category.
:-)

Northern California, CA

LOL maggiemoo..... so are we talking about knives and needles and scissors????? Swords and skewers???

Maybe I've led a sheltered life, but I don't recall any images of pointy things I'd be able to share. :-)

How about some examples?

(now you've got my mind racing to find some pointy things to photograph)

Rockford, IL(Zone 4b)

Just found this thanks to a link in the Blue Flowers thread - I'm interested! This could be a lot of fun.

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

I don't have anything to add, but have been awaiting something from Admin saying when, where, what, etc so I could enter. I guess sometimes silence isn't golden.

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Lol, Happenstance,

Pointy things could be anything. Maybe a head shot perfectly framing a longhorn steer's horns, the top of the Chrysler building, maybe a grouping of umbrellas all opened up and "pointing" up? Just something to make us think outside the box, just for the fun of it.
:->

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

The pictures I take with the !@#$% brand camera are certainly not candidates for the contest.....but the pictures others take are such a joy!!! I look forward to this with great anticipation!

Perhaps if the informal "leaders" in all the other forums would post about the contest, and maybe put a link to here, it would be a good thing for people who might miss reading about it. I don't have that problem, I "lurk" and read EVERYWHERE! LOL
Pati

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

I'd like to see a category for Conifers. North of about zone 7, that's the greenery year round and have seen some really great photos here on DG. Thanks for considering.

Dea

Tucson, AZ(Zone 9a)

How will we know when this all starts, or is starting??

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

I have the same question..Piggy

(Zone 8b)

SO is the contest open, or are we still waiting for the "GO"??
I've been away for a while but I was interested - another just waiting for the gun.

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Dave will surely link us to the thread when he get's it tweaked I'm sure. Gonna spend a beautiful Fall afternoon seeing how many good shots I can get.
Shoot, shoot, shoot!
Sidney

I'll have it setup soon, this week hopefully.

I'll setup as many categories as I can - it might end up being less than what's been discussed here. I am concerned about spreading the contest too thinly.

For example, last year some categories only got 1 or 2 entries!!

dave

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Just found this thread, count me in.

Fayetteville, NC(Zone 8a)

I'll be in the hospital for a few days and then out of it for a few more, but I really want to get in on this. Hoping the contest will run for more than a few days.................

Diane

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Be well, Diane.

Fayetteville, NC(Zone 8a)

Thank you so much.

Schroon Lake, NY(Zone 4a)

Just found this thread

Can we have an ugliest bloom ohpleaseohpleaseohplease!! I have never had as reliable a laugh as the ugly daylily contest this summer with Gingerjar's blue eyed curls...and there were LOTS of REALLY UGLY BLOOMS!!

Safety Harbor, FL(Zone 9b)

How about best 'before and after' transformations? Could be a particular garden bed area, etc.

The contest page is up:

http://davesgarden.com/contest/2005/

Now, as for categories, I want to keep the list small (we can remove some from what we have, or add a couple). Please look at the list and see what you think.

Now, as for the judging categories, here is how it works:

There is a toplevel contest like "Brugmansias" and within it, we need to setup some judging categories, like:

"Longest whisker"
"Best container grown brug"
"Best color combo"

or whatever.

For each of these categories, we need to setup those judging subcategories. I need feedback on what subcategories everyone wants for each contest.

dave

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

Can we have a category for pets? Please :-)

Pets are now added!

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

Thanks!!

I'd like to see a judging category in daylilies for Spiders/UFs to separate them from the other forms, they are pretty unique and I know that some folks don't like spiders and other folks don't like the rounder ones etc... Also, since ruffles and fancy edges (don't know the correct terms) are so popular now, maybe a cat. for the best of those as well and maybe for doubles too...

edited for spelling
