Farm->chicken coop->now the bobcat and pond!

Gamleby, Sweden(Zone 7a)

Hi girl. take this in the name consideration also. If your gonna put the nursery in the yellow pages, then its rather important to begin the name with a letter that lands your company name as high up on the list as possible.

Chele they have bottom drains that can be put in the pond after the liner is in. You don't have to put a hole in the liner. They seem to be working great for the several people I know who have put them in.

I love your name of TGIF Perennials and more

Keep it up Janett. :)

Tell me more about these drains Lani!

I did get the pond filled to the plant ledge today. I need to fine tune that a bit and rake up some of the dirt to level the edge. It was not completely level there and running a bobcat around it didn't help. hahaha Have I mentioned how fun that bobcat was??? :)

I had hoped to get more done but I had a crabby baby. By the time I got up there and unloaded my garden wagon and a trunk full of plants, there was only about an hour to spare. I hooked the wagon to the new riding mower and gave the kids a few rides. LOL It was also nice for running the shade plants out front and taking tools to and from the garden. I did go ahead and mow most of the front yard too.

We need a different plan! By the time we get the kids off to school, load up and leave, we spend 2 hours in the car to work 2-3 hours. Hubby called for one of those minis or pods or whatever to be dropped off on Thursday. Hopefully everything else we want to take will fit in there. Then it will just be a matter of running plants out.

Where can I get a ton of cardboard?

Chele, almost all cities have a place that buys bundled cardboard. Call Lowe's of HD and see where there's goes... or even the store where you work(ed)...

I assume you are thinking lasagna gardening or something similiar with the cardboard?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Sadly, I have realized I am gonna need a LOT of shade plants! At my present house, I only have a 25x4 shade bed. All of these came from that bed. I also have a lot of plain green hosta in there with both huge leaves or tiny strappy leaves. I left most of those so it would not be naked. I left some petasites behind too. I filled in with sweet potato vines and coleus so it would still be a nice bed.

This house has a four foot wide band of shade all the way across the barn and house, plus around 5 trees. Under the apple tree does not get that shaded but some.

I think I will be hitting the box specials at Lowe's and Home Depot both fall and spring for variegated hosta and whatever else I can find. I love variegated plants! I think I am going to leave all or most of the varie vinca behind though. hehehe

Yes, Darius. Since the topsoil is not very thick and everything under it seems to be gray silt-like clay, I am going to put down thick cardboard then build up with hay, soil, sand, manure, whatever it takes to get the soil just right. Because the land lays wet in the spring, I don't want to risk crown rot by planting in the ground. For now, I may just put in one massive, or two large beds and hope to make my plants fit for the winter. I can sort it all out come spring or just keep building beds and rearrange in the spring.

I am going to check with Target to see who picks up our bales. I figured I would also try our garbage company. I will have the same one out there as I do here. It would be nice if I can get some delivered. I don't know about hauling them myself. They are under an extreme amount of pressure and if those wires blow, they can slice through jeans and a few layers of flesh. I had to think what a 1000 pounds of cardboard would look like blowing down the highway. LOL Okay, not funny. I don't want to be responsible for it either!

I have been noticing an old barn full of those bales when I drive to the house. Now that I want to stop and find out what they are for or why they are there, I can't remember where the darn thing is!

Re: the bottom drain retrofit http://www.aquaart.com/drain.html this will explain it better than I could, Chele. This link is the best price I have found so far tonight.

This website shows pics of it and will show you how they work but their price is very high on it. http://www.marinedepot.com/aquarium_pond_products_tetrapond_pond_liners.asp?ast=&key= I have heard they work almost as well as the one that goes through the liner.

Here in the wild west we can get hay delivered to our house for the cost of the hay plus $5 to $10 per ton for delivery. If you can find some old hay that they just want to get rid of or better yet straw because straw doesn't have the weeds that hay might have they might just give it to you to get rid of it and also might agree to haul it for you.

Hope this helps you.

Thanks a bunch Lani!

I have no idea what was up with the chat last night! Every time someone logged on I got the boot! I finally gave up last night myself and plunked for a bit.

I decided not to do any running today. I am working on things here and doing some packing. Hubby ran to the other house to work on the laundry room. He has to get that new water heater in and honestly I think he is tired of cold showers. ROTFLOL

Hopefully tomorrow, I will get away by myself for a few hours to go up there with a trunk full of ornamental grasses and work on the pond a few hours. I am trying to wean the baby as well and a bit of distance between us would be a good thing! Hubby has to be here to wait for the Pod to be delivered and I think he needs a day without running. These two hour trips every day, after the kids leave and trying to be back before they get home, are killer!

I hope to have the major stuff here done and have the kids into the new school by early November and have this house on the market.

Assuming 'chele is planning to continue "growing" her family, how about "Cheaper by the Dozen Nursery"?

Or.....(evil chuckle) if you were blessed with six boys, THAT would be "Craig's Revenge", yes?

Janett, that's a good one!

"Borderline" makes me wonder if the plants are borderline?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

You guys are too much! I still keep thinking about Baa's "Princess Gardens". I still get a chuckle out of "Princess Plantsalots Garden". I wonder if I can come up with some variation of that or even that. I don't know why that makes me laugh. Plantsalot reminds me of Camelot which sort of goes with Princess. :) Then I get all these ideas like "Royal Acre Gardens" cuz it was a royal pain to get!

Can someone please send help? I am itchy and bleeding! I have just dug up some rather hefty ornamental grasses, some of which have been in the same spot for 3-4 years and one that is easily 20' tall. You oughta see the rhizomes on my Arundo! WHY did I take down the pool??????? Hey, the grasses will look nice by the pond anyway. ROTFL

Ric, how well do you know me? What kind of pansy do you think I am??? It has to be in the 80's which means you know darned well I am out there in shorts, a sports bra and a pair of thong shoes! LOL The grass lost and I won! So ha!! :)

I am hoping to escape alone tomorrow. If all goes well, I am going to tear out of here in the am with a trunk full of grasses. I want to move the rocks that are placed around an imaginary garden and a couple of bushes and put them by the pond. Then I can rake some of that clay around to level the plant ledge and place the rocks. Aside from the Arundo, the other grasses will go by the pond. THEN, I will figure out how to get the fish and pump to the other house. I am hoping to go up there Friday after the kids get home or Saturday am and spend the weekend.

I am still trying to come up with a bunch of cardboard. Rumpke won't give it away or sell it. They recycle you know. Hmph! Can you say flame thrower? I am about to go get a sod cutter and just have the good dirt shipped in and mounded. I am in a hurry! What is wrong with these people!?!?!

Mg, you knock that off! Maimed, that is what I am. Broken and Bloody! LOL Okay, really, it is just a few welts but I am trying to get some pity here. ;)

Dyson did mention a couple of Ohio visits. People better realize I am desperate and might start saying yes soon. LOL

Chele, you might be able to get refrigerator and other large appliance boxes at big box retailers. Also, your local chapter of http://freecycle.org or http://craigslist.org might be good places to post a wanted for cardboard. I got a bunch of newspaper for our veggie bed that way.

I think TGIF is great -- and don't worry about God offending people. Of course His name will be an offense to some people, but your farm's a blessing, yes? Anyway, the TGIF fits in great because you can advertise it like, "Thank God it's Friday -- I just got paid and can go buy plants!".

Thank you Janett! I know YOU Love me!

On a good note, I got the baby through the night without nursing and also down for her nap today. We are on the way to a weaned baby! Woo hooo. (Okay, really it is sort of sad but she IS 18 months!). LOL It was not easy last night. She kicked, hit, pinched, head butted me and pulled my hair. I stood my ground. :(

Bloomingdale, OH(Zone 6a)

Janett! You are worse than I am, and that is really saying something!

Michele, have you checked into a stock tank at a farm store? The only reason I thought of it is because I was looking at them last week for a water feature on my deck. You can get rubber type ones or metal and I'm sure you could put it to good use later on. Not realy pricy either.

mg

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

I get big cardboard from the local furniture store...they love to get rid of it.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I do have a stock tank. :) I don't know if it will fit in my car and I am also worried about the fish sloshing around. I believe I have about forty fishes and one is over a foot long. I'd have to find something to clog the hole with too. LOL

I will check with Lazy Boy and some of the appliance stores. :) Thanks Connie!

You like this one? This pic is from June. I use it as a veggie filter/water fall.

I forgot to say that Arundo was 19'11"! LOL It is now trussed up and by the front steps. It is my fall corn decoration. hehehe I cut all the flower ends off and stood them in a huge vase to see how they dry. :)

Bloomingdale, OH(Zone 6a)

Ok cool. That looks really cool bs. I'm just in the dreaming stage right now, sigh.

If you drive the way you do everything else, I can see the problem. Top Speed!
Hmmm how to keep water and fishies in the tank? I guess you could get some big popcan recycling bags, maybe put a couple in each other. Then after the fishies and the water goes in, knot the bags? Then you might not even need the tank? I'm just throwing ideas out here, I've got no experience with ponds or fishies, or trying to move them either!

mg

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL I truly appreciate your efforts and advice. :) I just dug my FOURTH pond! The first was little more than a water hole, lined with old swimming pool liner. I didn't put fish in it but kept water plants in it and the frogs liked it. :)

There is a fish hatchery a few miles away where I buy supplies and stuff. They have heavy duty bags for getting fish home from their store. I may talk to them about their bags or ideas. They have neat tanks to sort of vaccum up the fish, take them to the destination then shoot them back in the water. I bet that would be pricey!

Bloomingdale, OH(Zone 6a)

Oh Gawd, a fishie hoover?

I'm just glad to have read THIS sentence from above correctly!:

" It has to be in the 80's which means you know darned well I am out there in shorts, a sports bra and a pair of thong SHOES!!"

When I hear the word 'thong' it gets my attention. Course now, when I hear the word "SHOES", I run the other way!

You're doing good, BS! Great fortune to ya!! *Smile! :>)

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

Do I really need to haul in the fishing pole? or just good gloves?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL Shoe! I was wise enough to clarify. :)

I think you will be spared fishing Dyson. I have no idea what tales Ric has told you. ;)

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Well I guess the neighbor are glad that at least you were wearing that much! LOL!

I'm an old hand at fish moving.
We moved 7 55 gallon, 3 30 gallon and 2 tens when we came down from Dayton.
Some of the fish were 18" long and all tropicals.
This was in Mid-November.
All in a Pinto.
Don't need any special bags or containers.
We have them all.

Jones stocks our ponds at work.
That fish sucker IS pretty neat!
That WOULD be a cool way to do it!

On the cardboard how much do you need?
Or rather how much can you take?
What kind?
We have tons at work.
We reuse all the boxes we can for shipping but probably 50% can't be reused.
Our baler is down so we just trash it.
It's yours for the asking.

Ric

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Behave! LOL

I have two choices. I can throw down cardboard and have good dirt hauled in or I can rent a sod kicker, remove the sod and have good dirt hauled in. Guess which I prefer? :) I need enough to do at least two beds 4' wide and about 100' long. In the end, I want to have 6-8 that size.

I can take whatever will fit in the sub and jeep. Hubby is going to put my hitch on tomorrow hopefully then I am running out for a trailer. I need to get this moving show MOVING! I have seen leaves coming off the trees. OH NO!!

I don't guess you are throwing out several dump trucks full of dirt? hehehe

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

I don't think DELTA will let me bring them - carry on or checked.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Awe, just drive a big one! LOL

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Call me tomorrow on the cell.
I'll get a better idea of what you need, cardboard-wise.

Ric and

Hey Chele - what's happening??? Are you in???

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

We just got home from spending about ten hours working at the other house. We knew the water heater was toast when we bought the house. We also knew there was some water damage on the laundry room floor. What we didn't know, is that the floor was completely rotted out. Hubby has spent the last couple weeks ripping out the washer, dryer, a shelving unit, a cabinet, the water heater and then on to tile and two layers of wood!

He got the 2 layers of subfloor in yesterday while I stayed here and worked on demolishing and redoing some beds.

Today I had 60 yards of soil delivered. After writing that check, I will be changing my middle name to COMPOST! LOL I think I will have the space and leftover stuff to put in it now and have a neighbor with a big fat pile of poo! I had the truck driver straddle my two cardboard lanes and dump the soil as he went. I spend hours shaping it up, raking the extra into the grass and placing it around a BIG maple so I can put a bed there.

I had put down carboard for two beds about 5x100. He dumped 20 yards on each bed then left me a tidy 20 yard pile in front of the barn. LOL I should be all set for a month or so. ROTFLOL I plan to use the two beds as holding beds until spring and I will figure out the rest then.

After several hours of moving dirt around, I went in and laid down the laminate floor in the laundry. Hubby got a great deal on a bunch of that linoleum plank stuff that looks like hardwood and it actually matches the panelled closet the electric box is in as well as all woodwork. I can't say I am thrilled with the color but I have to admit it looks like real hardwood flooring, it matches the other stuff so I don't have to be in any hurry to redecorate and hey, it's just the laundry room. ;)

We got home about 45 minutes ago. I reheated the pots of soup I made yesterday and made grilled cheese and buttered rolls. It is so nice to eat at home! I can't wait to live at my other house though

I did snap a couple pics of the tree bed and the holding beds but the camera is still in the car. Wonder if I can walk that far. hahahaha

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Glad to hear you got the soil down!
You guys gotta be beat!!

Need any more cardboard?
The elves are storing it away.

Ric

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I almost called you but didn't have time to run up. I gave the uhaul back but I can get a shorter one for $10/day. Thanks a bunch for that last load! That was the second bed. LOL It is actually a bit shorter than 5x100 because of a drain trench. I am sure I will do the cardboard around the pond and down the front of the house as well. Now I have a ready supply of soil. :) My first big job tomorrow is to start moving the clay from the pond up to the foundation of the house.
