New thread ...who is in on MG War???

montgomery, AL(Zone 7b)

BOY, are my MG growing slow! They are in full sun so maybe they will catch up soon. I sure hope so.
Sugar

(Zone 8a)

Sugar...mine do not do well here in alabama in full sun and I always plant them in shade and get evening sun...tons of flowers for the common ones!

montgomery, AL(Zone 7b)

Rebecca I have one arbor that is like that. I Hope they all do good but we will see.. I'll know better next year if they don't.. all I have is common ones.
Sugar

(Zone 8a)

Sugar...with your heat and sun, give them lots of water morning and evening!

Good luck!

(Zone 8a)

I have blooms already! And some are gorgeous! *snicker*

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

We were having normal May weather so I put some of mine outside and now they aren't looking very good. Got down to about 36 degrees last night. Have more seed started now, but just lost about two foot of growth from the cold. Darn it, I was looking forward to early bloom. My yellow ones are still in the greenhouse and looking really good. Got the seeds today for the one that was just ID'd a while back with the stripes. Will get some to you, MVR, at the first of the week.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

I have a mess here. It's been so cold at night that I can't get anything outside, and the morning glories are grabbing onto the growlight stand, the tomato plants, the curtains, the table legs and anything else they can reach. Ugg. What a disaster. I unwind them and they just grab something else. I hope it warms up VERY soon.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

the weather here has been nice, except for the darn strong winds. the winds make some of tall plants look like their kissing the ground as the strong winds go by.

Thanks Brugie :).

Crossville, TN

OK! I have put my babies in the ground! Something is eating a lot of my other plants...like Roses, and China Berry Tree leaves....I am so worried about them taking a liking for my MG! What is a Mother to do? I worry all night, until I get up in the morning and rush to see if they made it through the night....3 nights now...and they seems to be OK. Jo

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

you know RR, this is my first year gardening too and something seems to be nibbling on my plants too but i can't figure out what it is. I know I can't grow any Violets, tried that a couple of years ago, just got a couple to make it look nicer and the rabbits kept coming in at night and eating them all until there was nothing left. I don't know how they get in. The gate is always closed.........mystery to me........LOL

The weather is so cold here, especially at nights that nothing is growing very fast at all. It's all taking it's sweet ole time :(

Kentwood, LA(Zone 8b)

Don`t fret over the weather or your plants because mine are doing just fine. I`m making a ""FIRST PRIZE"" ribbon for them, LOL, so there is no need worring about even entering LOL. PS just kidding.

Crossville, TN

Busybee...I was a very slow starter in school...and very ugly...I'm still ugly...but my MG's are going to be like the Ugly Ducklin...and turn into a "SWAN"!

Susan...I don't know what is eating these plants...no grasshoppers yet, and the rabbits abound in my yard, but I havve chicken wire around the Roses...and the China Berry is about 10 ft tall....my SIL may just be right...fruit flies!

RR(hoping for better days)/Jo

Blum, TX(Zone 8a)

something has been chewing on my plants too. we have snails that crawl at night. also cutworms are gettin' ready. and been seeing tiny grasshoppers. looks like were in for it. my mil put 7dust on some of the plants but I don't like using that. it smells bad so I think it is.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

tink*****, try mixing a heaping tablespoon of the powdered Sevin with a gallon of water and use it as a spray. No odor and not unsightly. You can add Rabbit Scat to the mixture if you want to. I always add a squirt of dish soap to the stuff after mixed. Helps it stick to the plants.

montgomery, AL(Zone 7b)

There is so many JUMPY things here I'm surprised I have any plants left but so far everything still looks good. I sure hope that continues.
Sugar

(Zone 8a)

Oh I am so sorry about all the cold temps up north and sympathize and I am ashamed of myself for bragging and not thinking about your setbacks but my mg's always come back when it gets cold here and it has been nippy lately but they are thriving...of coarse we have had an early spring here this year...

I hope this crazy weather will peak soon for all of us!

Happy Gardening!
Rebecca

Bay City, MI(Zone 5a)

oh me too, i'd like to join the fun.

Cleveland, OH(Zone 5b)

Just planted mine today! Hope I can be in the running!

montgomery, AL(Zone 7b)

Do wild morning glories count.. think I'm gonna have a good crop of them... I fight them every day..

Crossville, TN

OK! They are in the ground...I'm glad there is a bright moon tonight...I think I should stay up and be sure no critters eat them....It is cool here at night in the high desert country......what if I freeze? Guess I'll make a thermos of Hot Chocolate to help me stay warm.....Jo

(Zone 8a)

Hi All,
Yes tootsie and celia you are in! Sugar your wild ones will be great!

Jo...they will be okay just put a little 7 dust on them, oh I know but this is war!

Happy Mg'ing!
Rebecca

Crossville, TN

Rebecca...do they like Epsom Salts? I've been having to soak a sore ankle the last couple of day and I hate for 2 cusps of epsom salts to go down the drain...but don't want to kill my precious babies! We have very alkiline soil. Jo

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Sniff Sniff. I had some grandpa ott's going that I was really looking forward to. I had them under the lights and they were fine Thursday night when I watered, and now they're looking shriveled up and dying. I have no idea what happened to them. I hope I can keep the other kinds going until I can get them outside, which will be within a week I think.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I put my Grandpa Ott's outside a few weeks ago and then we had another surprise cold snap. Today I was looking and thinking that I should stick some seeds in the ground and there was a bloom. No leaves, just a bloom. Poor plants are so bare they must be cold. I'm sure they are going to come back, but we got a lot of rain today and I know they don't like to be wet.......without leaves, they can't take in the sun, so I probably better stick some seeds in the ground to be safe. This, had I taken a picture, could have won the ugliest MG picture for sure. :-) Just anxious to see some of them bloom nicely.

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Finally here I am.. I havent check on this one for a while.. Wow I am all behind. LOL.. My MG's growing and sending lots of vines on my banana trees. THey are under shade/part sun.. They are in big pots... waiting for them send some buds....

Sarasota, FL(Zone 9b)

I'd like to be a judge! We have a hard time growing MG's here in Florida so I will not be tempted to vote for my own! LOL. I remember them so fondly from my youth...so let me be a judge and get vicarious thrills!

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

ok, what is 7 dust and will it harm domestic pets such as dogs as I have two of them?

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

flowox, it's sevin dust, and no, it will not harm pets. In fact, you can actually dust them with it to control fleas.

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

I've never heard of it before. guess I will have to go look for some :)

thanks Aimee

(Zone 8a)

Sorry I haven't posted for awhile been busy trying to get my pond cleaned and all! And DRUM ROLL!!!!!! My son is getting married in my backyard on 6-1 saturday and cleaning it too!

RR...NO don't put epsom salt on mg's, Iv'e never heard of it! You can pour it on roses though but not too much!

JJ...I have some G'otts if you need more! just give me an email!

Brugie...sorry to hear about yours too...I have some G'otts seeds for you too! You didn't take a pic for the ugliest? he-he

Dalepc...sorry but we already have 3 judges! Can you be bribed? *snicker*

Flo...Aimee is right about the seven dust...it is safe to use!

Happy Mg'ing!
Rebecca

montgomery, AL(Zone 7b)

Won't sevin dust hurt the butterflies & such?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Rebecca, I still have more G. Otts, but thanks anyway. You should see the yellow MG's you sent me seeds for. They are looking really good and are so thick. Not planted thick, just the plant itself. Great looking plants. Planted three more kinds yesterday. I should never have visited this forum and read the posts on MG's. I'm hooked on yet another flower.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Rebecca, thanks for the offer. It looks like mine are gonna come back to life. They are perking up. I don't know what was wrong with them for awhile, but they look much better now. Maybe they just got a little too dry. They must be very tempermental.

(Zone 8a)

Okay...good luck to ya'll!

Sugar...I do not like to use sevin dust myself but when I see a plant I have grown from seedlings and something is eating it up and leaves are gone then it is time for sevin dust! I'm sorry about the butterflies and such but they have a very short life anyway and others take their place faster than we can breathe!

Happy Mg'ing to all!
Rebecca

Ok,has anyone ever grown the cotton
morning glory? Ipomoea cordatotriloba,
or the ivy leaf morning glory~ipomoea
hederacea,i think. I have seedlings
of these coming up and i think the
cotton mg's are pale pink,i don't
know about the others. Any info
would be nice! Thanks~Bitty

Kentwood, LA(Zone 8b)

Hi Brugie,
I hope your yellow mgs do real well because I would like to have some seed. Hope I have something that you want.

Crossville, TN

Well, the temperature reached 100º here today..."but it's a dry heat"....I think it cooked some of my babies!!! Jo

(Zone 8a)

RR... We are baking here in al too! Heat indexes over 100 this weekend and still cooking!

Crossville, TN

Luckily, I put 3 wee MG's in a slightly shaded spot...they may survive....not betting the ranch on it though. Jo

Cleveland, OH(Zone 5b)

This is probably somewhere else on another thread, but can someone tell me when and how to harvest the MG seed please?
