New thread ...who is in on MG War???

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Dee, is your cousin from Missouri? My cousin brought me some Jack in the Beanstalk seed from Missouri and turns out it is hyacinth beans.

Hamilton, Canada

Guess what folks...I had a mere 3 seeds of Chocolate Moonvine and this evening they are poking through to the tops of the plastic baggies...yippee...I'm in heaven and my son thinks I'm losing it...lol.

Joydie

I'll setup a contest area for this contest.

MD &, VA(Zone 7b)

Thanks Dave!!!

No problemo - you might want to start a new thread specifically about the contest... this thread is mightly long already.

Mount Prospect, IL(Zone 5a)

I've got my 91 morning glories upabout 4-5 inches in the house, want to make sure they are sturdy before putting them out! That'll give me 91 chances to win!

"down the Shore", NJ(Zone 7a)

Thanks Dave! Let's go to new thread, Morning Glory Contest 2002, this page is taking a long time to load! John

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

Dee and Brugie,
I have bean seeds that grow a vine that produces huge beans, probably 6 to 10 inches (or longer). The beans are kinda reddish brown in color when dry. The covering is green until it drys tan. Is this the same as what you have? The name I was given for these was horse bean vine.

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

I've never grown them before but just planted some outside that I started from seed, they sprouted within 3 days.......WOW. Can I join in too? I've never done this before :)

(Zone 8a)

I have planted about 300 so far...LOL I have gone CRAZY!!!! HELP!!!! My yard is gonna dissappear 'oh my' what have I done? I can see it now...like the vines in Jumanji movie! LOL

Flowox... you can join too!

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

ok, I'm joining. Although I don't quite have as many as you do imaseedpicker..........LOL. You will definately have to share pictures of your jungle :)

(Zone 8a)

Flowox...I hope I will be able to see my house or get out of it! LOL

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Gingerlily,
No, mine aren't like that. Mine are definitely hyacinth beans and the beans are purple. I do have some white ones too, but this will be the first year for them. Yours sound interesting.

S.

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

Brugie, Send me your address and I'll mail you a couple, believe I can still find some around here. I didn't plant any last year, but as I recall it didn't have any fantastic blooms, just these tremendous sized beans. Seems like it might have had a small white bloom, I don't remember for sure. You know, senior moments and all that. I have hyacinth beans too. Just don't plant them where you will walk under the vine, as it will scratch your tender skin (face).

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Gingerlily sounds like the asparagus bean - or yard long bean.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Gingerlily,

Thanks for the offer, but I have run out of trellises and fences to put vines on this year. I don't usually plant any morning glories, and have lot of passifloras, hyacinth beans, blackeyed Susans, cup and saucer, wisteria, and all my mandevillas, bush morning glories, Dutchman's Pipe, corkscrew and snail vine, and some that I can't even think of right now. If I plant one more thing, something else will have to go and I can't bear to give anything up. I do appreciate your offer though and think that Poppysue might be right about what it is. Happy Gardening!! :-)

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

Gingerlily... sounds like what u have is fava beans... http://shop.store.yahoo.com/seedsofchange/favabeans.html , more info on fava beans ... http://www.efn.org/~rossr/cont.html

ma vie

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

I don't think it's fava, MaVieRose. I looked at the hyperlinks and the beans don't look like those.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

hmmm, wonder what it is? that is what was recommended when i search google. can u please post photo. thanks.

yard long or asparagus beans color is black.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil(Zone 10a)

Hi, friends
About the MG WAR:
How many entries is allowed to each member?
Do we have to sign up???
Can I use last summer pictures ?? We are beginning fall here in South America.

(Zone 8a)

Lucia...hmmmm...I guess we all didn't think about how many entries are allowed but you should use reasonable judgement for the amount of pics to enter...

Dave placed a contest page for the mg war on Dave's Garden forum...

Is it really fall over in Brazil already? Bet your sad! :(

I guess you could enter yours from your summer too...

Okay with me!

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil(Zone 10a)

Hi, Ima
I love your nickname!
Living in a tropical country has many advantages regarding gardening. We can sow at almost anytime of the year, never have freezing days. In fact, here in Rio de Janeiro, our most terrible winter day could be compared to a fall day in The US (I don´t know where you live). The lowest temp we have here, goes around 18 degrees Celsius which is more or less 65 F.
I will sow MG now, but the flowers will appear mid winter and I bet they will not be as beautiful as those of last summer. That´s why I asked about the pictures.
I will ask Dave
Thanks for answering.
Regards
Lucia

(Zone 8a)

Wow...65 degrees at nite the lowest! Boy do you have it made over there! With those temps you should have mg's all year long!

Cheers!
Rebecca

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

Wow, I wish I could have flowers all year long too........I think I need to move......LOL

(Zone 8a)

Me too! Flowox... Rio de Janeiro here we come!!!

Crossville, TN

I'f ya'll take off for Rio...I'm coming and "liberating" your MG! LOL Jo

(Zone 8a)

RR...you don't wanna go too! Okay you can liberate my mg's and hope you live happily ever after!

:)

Crossville, TN

Ima...so far I haven't seen all the fun in gardening that everyone promised me I would have...more like work to me....well, I do get quite excited when my various seeds (sent to me by DG friends) start to sprout! OH what joy...to think that it was ME and GOD that gave life to these little things. But I think the Devil is lurking around every leaf, in the guise of bugs and birds...just waiting to chomp on them! I loose sleep over the ones that I have put out side...and hurry to look at them each morning...to see if they were eaten by a critter! Almost like raising teen agers again! Jo

(Zone 8a)

You are so right! It is hard work but if you keep fighting the bugs it will pay off in the long run!

With this drought we are having I just think I am watering my life away and love it!

I know when I die...God is going to make me overseer of his gardens because I love flowers too much! They just take my breath away!

(Zone 8a)

How are your seedlings growing? Mine are twining and some are 3 ft or more!

Can't wait to see them bloom!

Cheers!

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

I am keeping my entries under shrouds, figuratively speaking, of course, but I will tell you the baby grasshoppers jumping around in the weeds and grass are making me a bit nervous. Thinking I need to check out that bait after all.

Crossville, TN

I just can't bring myself to put my babies out in the ground....what if a bird swoops down and gets them? Or it gets too chilly at night....or what if they look better over here...rather than over there...OH! What am I to do??? Maybe I'll just let them ramble all through the house! Jo

Blum, TX(Zone 8a)

I saw a baby grasshopper in my catnip.they ate up so many of my plants last year ,almost made me want to give up but here I am as excited as ever to watch all those little sprouts jumping up. Where does anyone plant so many morning glories?I have a lot of trees ,fences poles makeshift trellises etc. and I still need more area. I am always searching for ones I don't have....And...thats a lot.

(Zone 8a)

Can you believe I already have buds on some of my mg's!!! Blooms are a coming!

Salem, OR(Zone 8a)

OK, evidently one must live in a fairly tropical zone to be in this contest? I live on the Northwest Coast, and it snowed not far from me last night, and by 9 last night I had frozen rain on my deck furniture! An unusal event for this time of year. My MG seeds have yet to be planted other than those that reseed themselves. So can I get in on this contest or are their zonal requirements? Seems like some areas grow much better MG's than others. I am lucky to get a few Grandpa Otts to bloom each year. But then that may be the point? Anyway, are there rules and regs or is it every gardener for themselves? LOL! I'll give it a go, but won't have an entry until about August!

(Zone 8a)

Penny4...no restrictions! Here is the info!

Okay, the judges are (drum roll) Calilly, Gingerlilly, Mystic...3 is all we need!

Deadline for pictures Sept 30 th 2002...

5 Categories are as follows...

(1) Most blooms
(2) Prettiest flower
(3) Best ugliest LOL
(4) Biggest bloom
(5) Best combination

Dave made us a contest page for entries at http://davesgarden.com/contest/2002/mg/

Good luck!

Crossville, TN

*snif* I don't think I can do this...I can't put my babies out in the wilds...to let these rabbits, quail, and birds nibble them away! It still gets down in the mid to high 3o's at night...but into the high 80's in the day...they have lived too shelterd a life to put them out!! I don't guess you can judge "Good Intentions"? LOL Jo

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Jo,

I don't think it says they have to be planted outside. Maybe you will have some great flowers wherever you plant them. Don't count yourself out yet. You might just have a real beauty on one of those babies. :-)
