Plant propagation - the Basics July 2017

Beautiful rock garden Keith. to keep sedums alive here I haven't found a happy medium. Porch is too shady, sun is too hot, house they get bugs. (probably brought in from outdoors)

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

oh wow, Kieth.. I love the Iris .... Lucky YOu! I had some when I had a bog garden, but that went away when the new patio came in.. Ju, I been chasing a butterfly and a hummer all day this am.. now it is too hot :P

Oxdrift, Canada

Thanks guys. Gypsi, I am surprised that sedums can't take your heat. They can sure exist with very little soil and moisture here. I have some huge natural paver rocks in places that I akways have trouble keeping weeds from growing between them. (Unlike Ju i am not fond of weeds). Last year just before I hosted the garden tour, I dug all the soil out between them to a 6" depth and filled the space with black crushed rock. Sedums are germinating and surviving in that medium

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Debra I see a few here only this year still not a lot of butterflies

Keith when weeds have blooms and uses I really like them , sometimes I am not as fond of where they choose to grow either .

I was cleaning a few seeds last night , when I feel better and lose the dull aches I will plant more ,

Nice rose Ju.
God I don't know how you people handle this heat all the time. Would you believe we just laid down with the ceiling fan blowing down on us for just about an hour in the middle of the sfternoon!!!! We NEVER do that. I feel like a rag doll

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Keith , Humidity does that , Even when it is not that humid walking inside , outside , poof wash cloth . 80 something here and Sunny

some people keep sedums alive. I am not one of those people. I do have an ice plant, I water it once a week, it's on the porch facing east. and my bathroom aloe vera is still alive. I had an attack of whiteflies on my sedum colony, destroyed most of them, so I chunked petunias in the pot and put them on the porch. You can see one sedum to the left of the petunias. Then Ice plant.

other photos: Soapworth, Asclepius tuberosa, Desert Willow I bought last winter in bloom

Gypsi , if the end plant is Ice plant it looks different , the 4 th looks more like the ice plant I know ,

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

nice colors, Alice. Love that desert willow!

Fort Worth, TX

the peach bowl is an ice plant, blooms are magenta about 1 inch in diameter, flattish with many tiny tiny petals. It s a succulent. 4th one is definitely asclepius tuberosa with orange blooms.

Now I got a cutting of what I was told was an ice plant and obviously it did well in that bowl, what I put in the ground died. It is on a porch with east sun, on the north side of my house.

Heat humidity. Lots of 5ton a/c in Houston is to control humidity. Even laundry gathers damp after shelving if no a/c. On the other hand, snow and ice is a myth. I am watering my plants of a morning or they melt like butter by noon. None of my flowerbeds are in the right light. Reminds me, forgot some trimming I need to get tended...

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Sounds like us last week, Kitt. Ugh.
I found a new way to sprout seeds..
Last photo is where I planted the Lav Moon vine, we will watch those babies come up to the top now..

HI joeswife, I love your idea by using those little cups. Where do you buy them?

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Debra I was using those when i had them from sauces that came with packages of food , Easy and quick I do not remember what happened to mine

love the Seedlings !!!!

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Spent an hour with my accumulated seed packets- I thot I had some fancy morning glories. :( nope, or else I am missing another box. Rain hit at noon. Got SOAKED out catching rainwater and setting plants out to catch their own rain. Now hoping everything I transplanted, pinched and replanted takes in the next few days of forecasted drizzled. The rest of this rainy day @77* and 62% humidity has been smiling at hummers and working indoors. Was really looking fwd to morning glories...

Impatiens Accènt Deep Orange
250 of these started from seed. Because most of our summer has been very cool these have just started blooming. This colour does strange things to my cell phone. The only way I can photograph it and get close to the actual colour is to zoom in real close otherwise the shots are washed out and butt ugly

I believe I posted a picture of this before in the unfinished version. This is the finished version of Kira's birdhouse project

Freaky coloured sky from Monday night. We were under severe storm warnings st the time and it looked like we were in for a doozie but it all blew over.

PS. I tried posting all 3 of these pictures together with much longer scripts earlier tonight but kept getting locked up, unable to send and losing everything. I am a man of little patience and I don't know if it's my equipment, my aging mind or this site but one of these days I am going to lose it.
Sorry, just venting.

Debra Morning glories are always pretty aren't they ?, Some years they do real nice here , others , not so good ,
My seed work is going slow ,

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I got a big box full of those cups and lids from a restaurant owner who went out of business. I gave him my golden chalice vine that never bloomed for me, and he got it to bloom. Meanwhile, ... I did get some Coleus to sprout and grow from seeds I gathered over winter downstairs. They are popping up around the pear tree border. (4th pic)
Look how tall my Iron weed is....(last pic) I think this weed flower loves being pampered.

Gorgeous hibiscus Debra. What is that 3rd plant with red flowers???

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Kieth. That is a caudex plant called Desert Rose... Adendium I believe is the botanical name. https://www.google.com/search?q=desert+rose+caudex&rlz=1C2AVSX_enUS420&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwid9OaqobvVAhVJjVQKHd8dAgkQ_AUICigB&biw=1366&bih=662

Refrigerator winter was highly successful for the asclepius tuberosa, I have 2 chinese food containers on the front porch with seedlings popping up in a good light potting mix. Now how do I successfully transplant to pots for them to grow out? my ground is too hot and dry to put them in right now.

Stevia is still waiting to germinate apparently. I wintered all of them may 23rd in moist soil in the fridge, fairly tight containers

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

If I were you, I'd insert the growing pot they are in , into a big pot with good soil. That way, they stay together to build support, and the roots will grow down into the soil below them, and add some cut up sponge to that pot you are sinking them into.. I do this all the time. Then when I want to move stuff, I just pull the original pot out. If it's biodegradable, all the better, they will do fine in a container as it breaks down.

Oh That's good! Cut the bottom out of that container, and sink it? I actually transplanted on wintersow effort and it is a huge bush. Hope you get them going!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Ju, trade ya some yellow blanket flower for some red... :D

I am raising them for the Native plant sale, will separate some later today, can't afford to sell them as a bush.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

My pics are slow load on this fone- it shows the % loaded as they upload. More I load, longer it takes. 100% humidity today, has been 80*, and perfect for the clematis repot. I have ended up with 6 plants- now I am home, I may get to see them bloom by next year. I only know they are blue, chuckl. In the meantime, back at the ranch, the weeds and I are still at war. My daughter seems to think I am losing the battle, but the body knows I am fighting. Let's see, ivy pot doubled up now, the tiniest of the 3 clematis vines, sweet potato vine and an asparagus weed, umm, a start of a tree that I personally don't see being able to cut out of that pot, but freestarts are easy. And the largest of the clematis root w/2 new starts, on the bench with the coral vines. I guessI should goread up on the care and feeding of clematis at least once. I need to know their fertilizer bloom preferences...

I watched a western ribbon snake cross my front sidewalk and into my flowerbed as I walked out a few minutes ago. My frogs are in danger. (other than that I find ribbons quite beautiful) No photo, he was fast.

the Native Plant Society of Texas has a website, they have 2 sales a year. I like raising plants and the sale finds homes for them, $ benefits monarch feeding areas and stuff

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

That's Great! Our Kansas Native wildflower tour and sale and seed gathering always happens while I am up in Buffalo.
Gosh Kitt, you have been busy! Today we had the non pleaseure of taking the main branch off our pear tree, it was either wind blown or lighting struck it . Now it looks terrible!
This is Pride of Barados I started from seed in the winter! Wish I could remember what these other plants are that I put at each point of the triangle. :P
