Plant propagation - the Basics July 2017

Fort Worth, TX

well I am fixing my chevy today before I finish up potting the asclepius tuberosa. Ran out of people to beg cups from , went and bought some 16 oz foam cups.

Not sure what kind of milkweed but there is a bumblebee on it. Is it one I should be trying to propagate? they grow wild around here.

looks like green antelope horn milkweed. Keep going, you have a long growing season there. I am still Planting seeds and propagating cuttings. Here are some coleus I cut off the main pot and stuck into the ground..I took two cuttings from Kopper King Hibiscus, they are stuck into the bean patch edge, no sign of failure yet.. here is hoping..
would anyone want to be in a test experiment for me> I have been making seed bombs with the little girls next door, and since Hadley is still fighting Cancer ( she is 6) I thought maybe we could sell some of these to her cause.. I have to know they work before we offer them up. Her sister, Kaylnn has been so good with her, since her little sister is a little "behind" on developing her 5 yrs as a normal little girl.. so we do things together to teach them both. here, they are holding their "seed volcano's" . they are already outside , rained on twice and sprouting! ( yes, that's my basement) It's water soluble paint. We make them out of my red clay soil mixed with a little potting soil and a ton of out door full sun seeds.

well if it is green antelope horn milkweed do any butterflies like it? Oh you have some good looking artists there, doing nice work. Pretty coleus too. Good that you are helping them raise funds. Sad that she has cancer.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Gypsi It is a Monarch Butterfly Host
Something keeps playing in my seed cups A few more coneflowers waiting for sprouts , About the only thing I have growing are a couple of Sky Blue Asters ,
I would try the seed balls but I don't have the room ,
Terrible thing that "C" word for one so young ,. They seem to take it a little better than us ("old people" )

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Well, she gives me inspiration.. I am glad I get to pretend Grandmother those two when they come to do a project with me. Seed Bombs are easy, throw them out the window on a berm, or ditch.
Here are a few of my "yellows"
I think since I have so many bags, boxes and suitcases full of seeds, we can get thru a lot of these in time for Christmas. I certainly have a lot of red clay!

Love your yellow parade Debra. Is that first oñe a false sunflower variety? I have Burning Hearts False Sunflower in my new perennial bed that I just bought this spring and i absolutely love it. It seems to get more and more blooms and none of them are looking old. I will try to post a picture tomorrow if I remember.

I love your beautiful Burning Hearts False Sunflower and the Cherokee Sunset Rudbeckia is to die for.. I love that little wild mg, Ju, save me two seeds, will ya?
I have been watching a patch of that green milkweed, I think it would be a good addtion to my milkweed collection.

wow..outstanding and professionally displayed.

Sparks indeed fly, that is gorgeous Keith! You actually choose for color and pop, I tend to favor the pale pinks and lavenders for some reason, possibly because they are on sale though.

Thanks ladies

Debra that is a gorgeous Dahlia. I'm gonna have to feed mine, no blooms yet except a tiny one on one plant. The potting them system helps with my soil issues but they don't have as much root room and need fed small amounts often.

Ju, here is what I was told was Ice Plant., and a couple of Texas sage and Bee pics.

I love smooth blue asters, Ju. Wow, you are really getting some pretty colors, Gypsy.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Forgot to say, the dahlias seem to take a long time from bud to bloom, Gypsy.
I waited two long years for this Duranta to bloom.. Lobelia cardinalis, clammy weed, Senna, evening primrose, Duranta *golden dew drops*

Hate to contradict but Gypsies ice plant is not actually a Delosperma. She has Red Apple Ice Plant which is Latin name Aptinia. The leaves are quite different and Delosperma tends to have larger flowers. I have both. Pictures have flowers closed right now until day gets hotter. My Red Apple Ice Plant are a variegated version but you can see the leaves are shaped like Gypsies.
#1 is Delosperma and 2 and 3 are Variegated Red Apple

Keith Contradict away , I have grown both but I cannot overwinter them , not hardy here , No room for pots of them

Last weeks Hollyhock sprouts , only one of the three remaining hoping .

lookin good on the sprouts, Ju. Keeping figerz crossed. This is year two for evening primrose, I am sure the seed dropping keeps it going. I love indian paint brush, had that a couple years ago. I love lobelia. What ever ice plant you guys have, it is beautiful. names mean not much to me these days, as long as I can SEE them. :D
I saw Senna growing in Buffalo, ny, Ju, I guess I need to look up your zone, as Buffalo is the same as us.

Debra , the senna is suppose to be a zone 4+ plant ,but it does not seem well here I will try a few more times , Cloudless Sulphur Butterfly host it is and all
I will let one of the bloom stems of the paintbrush seed fall , if I get any I will send you a few with the dwarf Morning glory , I found an easy vine of those today growing on one of my Amaranth

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Hay , Ju, I have a senna started here and it is the one indigineous to our area, so I think it would work there, but really, the one I have, I literally just threw a seed pod out that I crunched a couple times and left it there all winter. In fact, all the wild flowers native to here, I literally just throw about.. and !BAM! here they come next Spring. I just leave them, tho, cuz they don't like being moved. This one is here: http://www.kswildflower.org/yellow.php I want all these, and will be going out a couple times soon to check on my "areas".

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Debra, is that orange flower, by itself an Aschlepia? A butterfly flower? The RoS you sent me, think it was last hear, has not bloomed. It looks good, very healthy, but i think I am going to take it out of the container and plant it in the ground. I think it will do better. I bought a red Hardy Hibiscus from Hallsons,, It might bloom this year, not sure.
I hired a couple of guys to weed my perennial bed, and unfortunately,, they took out one of my Helebores that I have had for many years. it had seeded several babies around it and they took those out too. Oh well, People have to learn.
So nice looking at all of your pictures and hearing about your summer's activities in your plantings.

i have spent a lot of time working with my new computer and the server trying to get
it to work.I really do not like new equipment. last month i ran out of data room half way thru the month. That was bad. One more thing, I got a dwarf bronze colored (leaves) orange flower and don't know if it is going to bloom this year too. Reminds me jU, did your Electric Orange (is that right?) bloom? Did Mipii'S bloom?

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Hi Jen, I don't know which flower you mentioned, but here is the orange milkweed butterfly flower. ROS is big enough this year to go out, get her out now, tho. make sure all roots stay covered in dirt and have a hole and spare dirt to fill in around her and pack her in real tight. If an air pockets are left in the planting hole, she'll not do well. I tug things after I plant them, if they pull up anyway whatsoever, I re-do the planting hole. Be sure to trim her back about 4 inches to induce bloom if she doesn't bloom this fall.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

with moles and sand, instead of tugs, I go around tamping dirt. still tickled at the MG's, the heat stalled them at 2 leaves for almost a week, and now I have more leaves coming on. i wore me out, so watering again until I pick up energy, chuckl. I am watching some flowers give up the fight against the heat..even with water, they just wither away. Love the flowers, tickled to see them all!

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Debra I get a few of the less impressive of those wildflowers devils Beggars ticks , sow thistle , a tiny bloom false dandelion looking critter that tiny bees enjoy

Jen The small root I kept . Not as impressive as the mother plant was . location may have to do with that also

The False dandelion , Goats beard are like the purslane , wasteland dry places
I will start with the sow thistle getting seeds I can ,
Goats beard and false dandelion are already done around here , next season ,

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Good Morning! I already had a crop of goats beard, it did real well, just let the heads fall where they were at. Kitt, be sure to throw some epsom salts around while you are watering or before you water, when our heat is insane ( this is the coolest summer so far) epsom salts helps the washing away of the nutrients. Most morning glories will rebound in Fall. Mine bloom until the first freeze which is now around November.Wish I could remember what I planted here in the bean patch turned tomato patch. :P
