Plant propagation - the Basics July 2017

Jealous of your daylilies Ju

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Thank you Keith , There are nicer cultivars but as things are , I'm getting there ,
I'm trying to nettle from around a few Bes and Echinacea , Red Admiral butterflies watching
also what to do with all the fulva ,

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Thanks Kieth. I have to get the Angel Face mauve climbing rose from the back corner cuz the neighbors on two yards have let their trees and wild grape get all over the place back there, but since we worked all day on the bean patch removal and treatment for the tomatoes and peppers to be moved to, we will tackle that later.
I planted a pot of orange milkweed, some other wild weed perennials and it is now outside to be monitored for germination. I put gauze bags on the blanket flower monarda so far-to catch the seeds. I dug up some rogues wild morning glory and blackberry so here is hoping I can keep them going.
Before and after :
Joe got two bushels of beans and it was his last pick today. Sprayed it down with miticide and bug stuff as they were covered and had spread to the marigolds around it so I sprayed them too, and tomorrow he will dig it up add fertilizer and I will move my potted tomatoes and peppers from winter growing to that area.

Kira brought 2 of her mom's monarch butterfly caterpillars with her this week in a cute little bug container with some milkweed. When she came on Sunday afternoon grandpa needed a nagnifying glass to see them but not any more. They really grow fast!

cytf, ( whats your name? LOL) I love your flower groupings, Thanks, my sis in law gets most of her stuff from me except the vinca. Kieth, I keep looking for a like/love button on here, love those cats! and, they do grow fast as long as they have food and protection from the birds. We moved the tomato and pepper plants to the bean patch. It is going to be brutally hot today, but they will be fine. Have a good day everyone, we are going to the Tuesday half price matinee at the movies. PS: I love your cat, Ju. I sure wish we had one here.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Debra , The cat is fun , fewer plants eaten by chipmunks and such , but they chase away my birds and butterflies some of the time ,
Extremely hot outside here , My garden does not look like a garden , I am working on next year ,
I will have many more blooms looking better next year if I get done what I plan , At the moment I have a bunch of dispersed plants that need grouped ,

Another off the wall subject. This weeks project. We found the idea on Pinterest. I built a basic birdhouse yesterday and Kira put a coat of stain on it. We collected twigs from the Bush and now Kira is attaching them with 3/4" finishing nails

That is Cute Kieth , If the Bamboo hollows you get mason bees in the roof

Fort Worth, TX

oh Nancy that Scabiosa is fabulous. I think I had one of those one year, don't know what happened to it. Pups are growing, turned 3 weeks old yesterday, eating every 6 hours now. yay.

Brought home a yard table with what I thought were 2 cups of bees in the base. The entire 2 ft by 3 ft base was honeycomb, full of brood and honey. Propagating clean honey bucket and strainers when the babies are done eating.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Sound good and yummy Debra , Except for carrying cups of bees around ,

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Ju, the fleabane is still blooming here and it is really hot! Kieth, I love the birdhouse. So cute! Alice, Bees are scarce here these days, send me some.

Oh your stuff looks amazingly beautiful Keith! Outside of my yard Texas is starting to brown, were it not for dropping hoses and letting beds slow soak my yard would be brown too

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

beautiful , Kieth. Love the colors. We are in the triple digits for the next three days, *sigh* I have two huge vitex just now starting to bloom, and all the other flowers are still blooming. I'm using the soiled fish filters as food for the plants, I drop them into a bucket and run rain water on them to get them clean to re-use them. Easy Peasy.

Fort Worth, TX

fish filter goo is excellent fertilizer. Reminds me it's time to do some of my pond maintenance and aim it at the garden

Staten Island, NY(Zone 6a)

HI Keith, all your containers are beautiful. Do you save seeds from your Marigolds or you buy seeds every year..The Marigolds are very vibrant colors.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

I was thinking that also last night Really super Nice Keith

Daylily this morning

Hope this doesnt get me kicked off the Propagation Forum but I'm not a seed collector. I buy seeds every year. Those marigolds are Durango mix. Late last year I bought a few packs of red and yellow from a greenhouse to fill a small hole. When I was buying seed this year I couldn't find the red separately so I bought the mix and am very pleased with it. I usually don't like to buy mixes because there is always a colour in it that I can't handle but not in this one.
I start close to 1500 annuals from seed and also reproduce a lot by cuttings. But no seed collecting. I don't know enough about it to be sure what I will end up with. I know a lot of what I grow are hybrids so God knows what colour I might get and I am pretty fussy when it comes to that.
Keith

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

I'm still a seed freak , don't have the energy to go along with it ,

Kieth You would have to do something pretty awful to be thrown from here , lol
I do not have the slightest idea what these are for sure , suppose to have been sunflower and Aster (blue)
# 4 is something entirely other the jagged leaf low front center

Thumbnail by juhur7 Thumbnail by juhur7 Thumbnail by juhur7 Thumbnail by juhur7 Thumbnail by juhur7

I'm a seed collector but only if I grow a limited variety of hybrid-cross able plants, as my bees would mess up the genetics for anything pure and a 2nd plant type around (cucumber / cantaloupe, etc)

I have a lot of very different iris so any seeds that form go in the trash, no telling what weirdness would result.

I love seeds and hoard them the way Joe does his money. LOL I am definitely a seed addict. And to make things worse, I think I have added making cuttings to that craziness. And I do it all year long so that is even worse , I think. I give away a lot and the next thing I know I have 3 more. I love to see what crosses I get on Morning Glory and 4 o'clock.
Jainie lynn x aog shibouri = #1 and #2
Jaimie lynn x purple i purpurea = #3
Yellow x White 4 o'clock = #4
Fuschia x Yellow 4 o'clock = # 5
Looking at your seedlings, Ju I do see some obedient plant in there, and a a smooth blue aster. Have to look at my pics to see what else I think you have.
