Home page forums still not updating.
Status of Updates & Fixes
I keep getting taht this is a new post. Three times so far. k.
Skip to new also acting up again. It's taking me to page 5 and we're on page 6 now.
Also had issues with it showing this page being new even when it wasn't. Just started happening in the last hour or so that I noticed.
I haven't used ATP bc I didn't like the layout. But I dont like this even more. There is one step forward 2 steps back. I also got sent to page 5 and no update that there were any new posts. IMHO there should have been way more testing, I'm not even sure what the end results are supposed to be.
1lisac,, Katie and others.
I keep this thread open in my browser and just hit 'Refresh' button in browser when I want to see if there have been new posts. I do this with several Forums I watch, too. Basically. I rarely need to return to my Home Page. Also the tab and refresh method saves me from most skip to new issues. I currently have five DG tabs open in my browser.
Mine is the same way.
Welcome Home is still not updating. Hello - are the techs at home - still excessive clicking. It should be possible to open an updated thread (which is really updated) right to the last unread. This is done with ease on other sites. Why not here? What are the priorities now as they exist? Has anyone heard anything?
Preview should be offered as an option as it is easy to make typing mistakes. It should not be mandatory (who cares very much about typos on a thread of this chatty sort?). Just another clunky step (unless there is given a good reason for it).
To try to make things more manageable, here's a new thread so we can keep track of the still remaining issues. Here's what I know has been fixed, and what is outstanding:
Fixed:
Name hyperlinks now work
Date/Time stamps
Quote boxes
Apostrophes no longer trigger a backslash
Ads and ad boxes are gone for subscribers with ads turned off
Auto thread watcher - if you post to a thread, you *should* be automatically watching that thread, unless you have your preferences set otherwise.
Still outstanding:
Return to post after viewing photos in a thread post (added 12-13 )
Some posts contain a character or sequence of characters that is causing the system to reject them from posting or being quoted. (added 12-13)
Add back "while you were typing, a new post was made" alert when you are posting to a forum. (added 12-14)
Photo upload showing "failed to upload" even when pictures do upload. (added 12-14)
Favorite forums not accessible
Forced preview (except on quoted replies)
Pagination is still not optimized
Home page not syncing with forum updates - while those bugs are being worked out, try hitting the forums page instead of home: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/ (I know it isn't as easy to get to, because you have to go through communities first, but if you hit it from the "FORUM" link at the very top of each thread, you'll be taken there - see screenshot below.
Am I missing anything that is not working? (We can continue to fine-tune the background and font colors and size...but I'm not going to ask the techs to spend time on those until we fix what is actually broken.)

Can we have an updated Status Report and eta timeline of fixes being worked on and order of priority for same and other tweaks and site upgrades? Thank you .
I feel as though we are talking to ourselves. I don't expect management responses to every complaint but I actually asked a question several days ago. I asked about responses or comments to the Article of the Day. This was my question I posted?

I commented on one of the Daily Articles today. Usually I would get a notice when someone else posted to the same thread, but I didn't get one. I don't see a Watch button on the page anywhere either. Am I missing something, or is this something else that needs fixed? Also I went back later to look and see if there were any other posts and the whole thread was gone?
The preview didn't allow 'forgotten to upload' pix in old format. This one does allow pix to upload, but ya gotta watch it uploads the post as well as the pix or things get left behind....it also bugged me at first.
The refresh with open forums I have used- a bit diff to use on cellphone because of losing the one you were actually wanting. If 1Lisa and Jenette are both using the Ms10 and Outlook as they think, their probs may yet be resolved with their updating as these formats finally get settled and repaired.

I'm pretty convinced that NOBODY has a clue as to what the end results are supposed to be, unless it is to confuse and upset most of the general populace here until we leave.
On my phone or iPad, there is still no "HOME" tab at the top of the page showing after you click the "back to top". I thought this was supposed to be some wonderful, great way to get back TO the home page. In order to get there from my iPad, I have to click on something I don't WANT to, in my case, the "D-Mail" tab in order for the "HOME" tab to show. Anyone else having this problem with mobile devices?
I dont have a 'Home' but the logo 'Daves Garden' is a link that sends you home. Click on it

I thought about answering this when I first saw it, but decided against it hoping Terry would. She would know better than me about the change and if there is a means of getting updated.
Basically, the commenting system for articles is different from the forums. It is run by Discus. I recognized something changed one day when I could no longer comment on the articles and when hunting into our blocked scripts I found Discus was one of them. I temporarily allowed it a couple times, but because I will not put any Discus cookies on my computer, I cannot view the comments any more. All I get is a whirly-gig, but this is my choice. It already grates to have to allow googleapis.com just to post here.

I never said I was using MS 10 but I know Im using Outlook however that has nothing to do with DG?? Now Im getting updates that there are new posts on Threads but the new posts are mine. This is happening on my desk top and iPad.
Oh one more thing, there is a tiny watch/unwatch button on the top left of most threads.
I still have a backslash before apostrophes on my Home Page. :(
I see that sending a post still takes you back to the very beginning of a thread, rather than to the end where your new post will be. Is this on the list of things to fix? I sure hope so!
Thanks!
Vern
Doesn't it end up at the end of the thread? It is crazy that you can post a response without even looking at the rest of the thread, tho.
Chillybean, Thanks I did see the Discus link but wasn't too sure I wanted to go there. So basically We can't talk about DG Articles on DG we have to migrate to a different place to talk about them. Boy that sure is a good idea. Generally I am pretty laid back and patient but the more this goes on the worst it seems to get.
Very nice of you to answer me, would have been nicer if management had explained this.

I am sorry - I didn't see your note on the 19th. We do use Disqus for comments now, partly for security, and partly for ease of use for those who are not logged into DG when they read articles, allowing them to comment more easily. The downside is that you won't be notified of the other comments, because it isn't a forum thread hanging off the article, as it was in the past. (The writers are notified, as are Melody and I as admins of Disqus.)
If you are logged into DG, you do not need to have a Disqus ID. If anyone has a question about that, or it doesn't seem to work for you, please send a message to the help desk and we'll work with you one-on-one.
Thank you for responding.

We have a status update conference call with the techs late tomorrow morning. After that call, I will start a new thread, with an updated list of the fixes and status of them.
Terry, why did they add back to post on every picture that you could add to a post and then one day later take it off? That was a very nice feature.

The "behavior" of where to send you after you post to a thread has always been a bit of a bear. Here are the possible choices:
1. To the end of the thread you just posted to. But there's most likely nothing new there, so that isn't necessarily the best choice.
2. To the beginning of the thread you just posted to. But again - there's really nothing new to read there, either.
3. To the forum page where that thread (and others in that thread) are summarized. In some ways, that is a more user-friendly choice - if you are interested in THAT thread, you may be interested in others in the same forum.
4. To the main Forums page, which shows your watched threads with new activity (or it should); the newest started threads, and the threads with the most activity. That is also a possible choice - it lets you see threads that you know you're interested in, along with new activity that you might be interested in.
I'd be interested in hearing what the majority would prefer. I know we can't necessarily make everyone happy, but this seems like a good time to look at all the options and decide which one is the most user-friendly and helpful option to the majority of members. Thoughts?

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Can you give me a link to an example?
I still have a backslash before apostrophes on my Home Page. :(
Can you tell me which thread(s) are still showing this?

They are working on these issues - in the initial post I recommended using "Forums" instead of Home for now. As I noted in a reply to someone else tonight, we have a conference call with them tomorrow a little before noon. Once I have a status update and some ETAs on the next set of released fixes, I will start a new thread.

Anna, can yo click on the Dave's Garden logo in the upper left hand corner? That whole area is a link back to "Home."

If you got sent to page 5, it may have been sending you to the last place you read. It does that for me fairly accurately.

I would prefer to go to the end of the post, rather than beginning. There are times I can take around 10 minutes or more to post if it is something I think out or I have to hunt for/edit images or verify an identification through a search. Often there are new replies. I really miss the feature on this site that showed a notice saying there was new replies while I was working on my post.
I know this is minor, but I like seeing the "Welcome home, Chillybean" when I go to the homepage. It is code in the system, but it also has such a friendly feel. Does that make sense?
No, I did NOT know clicking on the logo would get you back to "home" until I was informed of that by someone here today. Still wondering why the "HOME" tab does NOT show up on my mobil devices.

Terry, if I remember correctly, after posting we used to be sent to a page that said something like "click here to return to the thread" and below that "click here to return to the (name of) forum". I think it also said "click here to return to your new post" or something similar.
For me that was very convenient because it gave me choices. I liked the ability to go back to my new post, especially if I posted pictures, so I could make sure they loaded. From that page I could also go anywhere else in the site including Home.
I attempted to recreate a similar page by clicking "Mark Unread" on this forum and taking a screen print of the page it takes you to. Of course the old page didn't say "Mark as Unread".

I second what Chillybean said and agree with it completely. I can also take enough time composing a post to enable new posts to be added. So my focus remains on the end of the thread.
Is it just me, or does this quoting a quote thing need some work?

nutsaboutnature's suggestion would be good, too, if it would have that notice saying there were new replies.
Last night I was talking this over with my husband, mentioning the different options. He agrees you are not going to please everyone, but he wonders (he's a computer guy) if there could be a setting put in the profiles to allow people to make their own choice where to be taken after a post is submitted? He doesn't know if that would be possible with the system this site has, but that would be nice, if it can be done.
Hi Terry,
I just realized my "Watched Forums" are not updating. I hadn't realized it before because my "Watched Threads" are updating. I know others are having this problem, and you guys are already working on it.
I thought I should mention it anyway because at first I thought it might only be with some browsers or mobile devices. I am using a desk-top pc with 8.1 and IE 11.
Thanks!
I would prefer to go to the end of the post. I also miss being told that someone else had posted while I was creating my post.
Going to the end of the post seems most logical to me, and it is definitely my preference. Being told someone else had posted while I was typing is a nice feature, but seems unnecessary if you automatically go to the end of the post, as you would see the new posts then.
Now that I realize it, my home page has not updated since Dec. 9. My threads seem to update but don't always take me to the right place on the threads. Then I just start searching and scrolling. I am using Windows 8 with Firefox.
