TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Good morning!!!

Coffee and donuts!!!!

Oh Marion, you can feign Alzheimer's when it comes to cooking, so you could never have to use your brand new oven!
Lol!
Kim must be super excited to start baking.

LK, thanks for that recipe. I love salsa verde. There's a local Mexican restaurant here, owned by natives from the region of Jalisco, and they serve some outstanding salsa verde. The tomatillos, green chillies, garlic, shallots and spices are all roasted first before being pureed together. Just the cilantros are used fresh, chopped and sprinkled on the salsa before serving. I am very lucky that all our grocery stores here have a big selection of Mexican produce as we have a huge Mexican population here due to the tobacco and sweet potato farms.

Talking of sweet potato.. Ernie, the cuttings are sowed in April here, and it takes about 120 days from sowing to harvesting. I'd have to ask whether the variety they grow do flower to indicate whether it's time to dig out the tubers. Though they are related to morning glories, some don't flower at all.
Actually, next to our property, about 5 acres are leased to a sweet potato farmer, and I'd know when it's harvest time, for the automatic harvester or "Diggers" will upset our pups!
Good luck in growing them, and by the way, the leaves are edible, raw too.
Ernie, you're much younger than my husband!!!! Though Kel is 48, he acts like a 90 yr. old when it comes to the gardens!! I wish he has some of your energy.

Sue, I've done that plenty of times. Waiting for coffee but the maker's not on. Even with rice. Too much stuffs on your mind girl!

And yes Marion, your sewing machine will be happy to reacquaint itself with you, right Karen.. Barb.. LK?
Repairs out of the way, did a few secondary blocks, got bored with that, instead decided to experiment with decorative stitches. Goodness gracious, a waste of thread some of them are!!

Cool today, but won't be long before the heat rises to a comfy high 80. Brugmansias are loving this. Mosquitoes won't leave yet :(

Have a fantastic day sistahs and Ernie. Sis Kathy, hope you're not giving your therapist any headaches!! Lol!!

Waving to lurkers!
Jaye

not much going on here
waiting for child support to get into gear. this is the pits ! last payment was on aug 7.
takes up to 14 days for it to process.
so he got paid on the 15th... yea just ridiculous. Once it gets on a roll, should not be a problem but this is crazy how long it takes for it to become routine .

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

I'm in the hospital. Been here all night. Waiting for the cardiologist to get here.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

My grandparents grew sweet potatoes in Michigan for years, even though everyone told them it couldn't be done. When they visited family in WV in the fall they brought back sweet potatoes from family because the ones you buy are treated to not sprout. In March Mom, (my grandmother) would put them in jars of water to sprout. Once sprouted she would cut the eyes with sprouts out and plant them in a Dixie cup with potting soil. I remember the enclosed front porch had them lining every window. By mid-May when it's safe to plant, Pop could put them in the garden and come late Aug. we all got sweet potatoes to eat.

Now as to the original question did they bloom? Sorry I don't know, I just remember how tickled they were every year to grow sweet potatoes in MI. Mom was from WV and Pop was from KY. He did the vegetable garden and she did the flowers, their yard was a wonderful place.

Here is some info on the sweet potato. Scroll to the bottom for harvesting info...

http://bonnieplants.com/growing/growing-sweet-potatoes/

Sweet potatoes are usually ready to harvest just as the ends of the vines begin to turn yellow, or just before frost in the North. To avoid injuring tubers, find the primary crown of the plant you want to dig, and then use a digging fork to loosen an 18-inch wide circle around the plant. Pull up the crown and use your hands to gather your sweet potatoes. To make digging easier and get the vines out of your way, you can cut some of them away before digging. Harvest before frost because cool temperatures can reduce the quality of the potatoes and their ability to keep.

And yes they do bloom!

Funny you mentioned sweet potatoes in water Karen. I have one in my kitchen now..beautiful vine. I was thinking about putting it outside to let it go wild.

The new will wear off soon on the oven and then it will be put to good use. The Juniors are calling for a meatloaf!! I think maybe I have spoiled them.

Kathy, what in the world has happened now. Please do as you are told and get better really soon...we need you here lady!!!

Maryville, TN(Zone 7a)

I can make meat loaf here once a week. One time for dinner then it goes for lunches. With two big eaters here it doesn't last long even though I make a huge batch.

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Same here Karen. I think my group just want to have it for the sandwiches the next day. Of course, the youngest grandchild expects mac and cheese with it also. Well so does her dad. I guess what they say about apples and trees is true.

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

I'm going home as soon as they do my sonogram, sometime today. Michael is here to break me out!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Why are you in the hospital Kathy?

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

I think I need a sweet potato vine. I do remember having one sitting in a container of water on to of my fridge. You girls do bring back some memories I had forgotten about. Never cooked them for family because I was the only one who liked them. My mom used to make candied sweet potatoes every thanksgiving and I think I could have made that my entire meal. No need to ask for recipes because she never used them. I need a recipe for a good meat loaf so we can enjoy sandwiches. So many things I liked that Darwin didn't so now it is time for a change. If it wasn't for me he would never have eaten vegetables, put it on his plate so he had to eat it. LOL

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

I'm in here because of chest pains. I should be going home today

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

Oh Sissy, I hope you're all right!

I went to a pool party yesterday and slipped my phone in my swimsuit top....Oops! It's in a bag of rice, but so far I'm not getting any thing encouraging!

I feel just naked without my phone!!

Maryville, TN(Zone 7a)

Yum Candied sweet potatoes Pegi, Thanksgiving tradition here. My mom always made them and DD does now. My grandmother made sweet potato pie with mini marshmallows all over the top browned in the oven.

Years ago I used to be able to buy a beef, veal, pork mixture for meat loaf. Now I just buy a package of ground pork and add it to the ground beef, 1 egg, a bit of milk, a handful of oatmeal, and a package of Lipton's onion mushroom soup mix. After I put it in the loaf pan I pour catsup on top and add some brown sugar. mix it over the top and bake until done.

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Sounds good Karen. I use lean ground beef, a few slices of bread soaked with milk, a couple of eggs, chopped onion, oregano, garlic and a little catsup to the mixture. Soak it until it is soften really well then mix the ground beef into to the mix. Put in loaf pan and shape..add a mix consisting of catsup, brown sugar and nutmeg on the top then bake at 350 until done.

I am sure there are 1001 recipes for meatloaf. All delicious and different..

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Meatloaf's are so easy to make. I use ground beef, a small diced onion, an egg, oregano and bread soaked in milk. I cook in my cast iron skillet but I lay raw bacon on the bottom before I place the meatloaf on top. Then I mix in a bowl, some ketchup, a-1 sauce or BBQ, pour that on the meatloaf. Bake it at 350 for about an hour!

My Sis just called and said Dad has been moved back to the nursing home! He still has the catheter in place, and will keep it there till he see's the urologist in 2 weeks. Thanks so much for all your thoughts and prayers!

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

Yay! So glad he's doing better!!

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Here is something to try if you like ketchup on top your meat loaf. Instead of catchup on top. Add nice fresh salsa to the loaf and mix it well. Yummy. Don't overdo the oatmeal or cracker crumbs it will make your loaf tough. Bread crumbs are better.

LK glad your dad is doing better. Yuk to the cathedar though. I begged them to just let me die in place of having one of those. No soap two nurses put it in place and I sobbed at the humiliation I suffered from that ordeal.

I just finished preparing another 14 cups of corn to freeze. This makes 16 pints and 14 2 cup packages.

We made a crash run to town to get a new computer tower. $521 and change. They want about 150 to retrieve my pictures and put on this machine.

Jordankittyjo. get well you are far to young to be lounging about the pital .

Maryville, TN(Zone 7a)

I've been using oatmeal for a gazillion years and my meat loaf is never tough, I don't use a huge amount, maybe that's why. Sorry just don't do salsa and neither does hubby, speck those who do would like it though. We just can't tolerate spicy.

Is your old computer dead? If not get a flash drive and transfer with that, about $8-$10. Lacking that, perhaps you can find a nerd to retrieve your pictures. I have a friend here who can do it. Put hard drive into another case and get pics that way.

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Salsa sounds good Ernie. Might give that a try next time I make a meatloaf...new has to wear off of the oven first. :-)

So sorry about the humiliation Ernie but it apparently was necessary and the fact you are still here sharing your wonderful veggie pictures with us make it all the better. I do understand as my late husband went through so many things like that during his last days with cancer.

Kathy, have you been "sprung" from the hospital yet? Sure hope they find out what is causing you to have all these chest pains...Ernie is right, you are way to young for this type activity.

Where is everyone? Oh well coffee is ready but someone else might need to add the other items....got the lazies this morning.

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

morning marion, i beez here. i wanted to sleep in but my dog had other plans.
yues they paroled me last eveninmg on good behavior. i have to much to do this week to be sitting in the darn hospital

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

There you go over doing it again. What ever are we going to do with you. Remember: Good Behavior!!!!!!

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

i do these things very well. isn't that good behavior? got to bake some cakes, the church is having a cake auction tonite. making deathby chocolate, and german chocolate cakes.

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

Yummmmmmmmmm!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Morning everyone! Glad to see your home Kathy! What did the Dr's say?

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Karen Our salsa is not the hot type. Someone in this house refuses to make it the least bit warm. Perhaps what we refer to as salsa is really tomato , onion. and garlic. Anyway try chopping some tomatoe into 1/4 inch squares and add it to your mix. So good I never add anything on the table just saying.

I may take it to a computer fixerupper.I have an external hard drive they may be there I know some of them are My son bought theis thing and hooked it up . Sowhere along the line it got unplugged,

Today they come to start wrecking our beautiful house I hope someone is happy with her new kitchen

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Sis Kathy, you are overdoing it!!!! This time you got lucky, next time, we might have to see you in a morgue!!! Touch wood!! Don't you know the word "VALUE"? Yes, value yourself, be good to your body and that means cutting back on obligations that can cause you added stress equals to chest pains. Sigh.. what are we going to do with you?

Marion, we need to tie that gal down!!!
How is Sue doing? No news is good news, she's come a long way.

Here's wishing a very comfortable stay this time, for your dad LK. I am glad that where he's at, he has very responsible care. Not like most of the nursing homes in the south.

All this talk about meatloaf. I do mine with oatmeal, egg, onion soup mix, Italian herbs and no ketchup. Not even to glaze it. Brown gravy to go with it. For special occasions, I'd mix the ground beef with fresh Italian sausage. I tried once mixing beef with ground turkey, that didn't taste right :D Experimented with peas, that didn't turn out well!
I can add fresh salsa like Ernie suggests.

Never did bread to the meatloaf. Kel's mother did the bread thing, but she used whole pieces instead of bite sizes. Kel and his brothers would be picking out long strings..

Lately, I add pico de Gallo to everything I eat. Even by itself!! Diced red onions, roma tomatoes, cilantro and squeeze some lime. Think I'll get some cucumbers and add that too. Diced of course. Kel's not into heat as much as me, so I leave that out.
But I do want to make some Salsa Verde, with LK's recipe.

Pegi, ain't that the truth. Suddenly this 'hotel' is smelling of healthy home grown veges!! Make you want to go out there and till the soil!!

Cookie, I forgot to tell you that that's a beautiful Asiatic.

She should be THRILLED with the start of HER new kitchen, Ernie!

Jaye

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

She is excited to get a new uneeded kitchen . Obivously I am less than excited. She will outlive me so it is her money she is wasting. Think of the fishing trips I could go on with those bucks lol.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Think of all the good food she'd be preparing in HER new kitchen, Ernie! You'd benefit too!

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

So agree with what you said to Kathy. That gal just will not learn!!! I am not sure hog tying her would help....she would figure out a way to undo the knots.

Sue is doing quite well thankfully. She is getting a wee bit antsy for me to come down there but she will just have to hold on until I feel up to the long drive again. She is younger than I am so I keep telling her that she should come up here. Alas no...no one to kittysit.

Kim will be home tomorrow and Friday as the doctor is having some test done to try and figure out what is causing this sickness bouts like she just had. I sure hope they get some results.

Trying to get my kitchen put back together now that the cabinet and oven have been installed. What a mess but a good mess.

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

I know there are so many meatloaf recipes out there, but really wanted to know how all you good cooks make it. Salsa sounds good, like a little spicy. I think my mom used oatmeal too. Will take notes and experiment a little. Never had it with bread. Been so long since I had a good meatloaf sandwich.

I discovered I like sweet potato pie a lot better than pumpkin;

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

the dr. saidv with my family history, i'm a heartattack waiting to happen. i tolds him it was stress because i was so stressed outb monday over my daughter, and michael's back popping out and this party saturday. he said to rest and take it easy, and next time don't wait a whole day when i have chest pains, go to the hospital the first pain , not 7 hours latert

thats what the dr. said.

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

oh yeah sissy, i also made a blackberry pie, and went to PT, this morning

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

Kathy you have to slow down!! You seem to be on the go all the time. Slow down girl, or that heart attach waiting to happen surely will. Give some of your energy to me and I'll give you some of my laziness.

Almost 2 PM here and I'm getting hungry. I didn't have my bowl of cereal this AM so I'm thinking I should fix myself a couple of eggs. Talking to my sister-in-law a while ago and my brother is doing good. Just couldn't get rid of pneumonia and he gained 3 lbs. He is starting to eat more, thank God. Don't want to see him go through the slowly starving to death. These golden years suck!!!

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Jaye I have had stomach bypass surgery my stomach is about as big as a tennis ball what do I care about food.? You could just about remove the kitchen and it would not bother me to much. As long as I have my pb and banana san or tomato sans I am good. I do like the scalloped potato and pork chop creation that I cook. After that it's mashed potato and gravy

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

Oh do tell, Ernie about your potato and pork chops!

I use crushed Cheesits for my binder, and I add some of my roasted tomato sauce to the mix. I'm also a catsup and brown sugar user! To each his own!!

Took 14 items to show at the fair this morning. This afternoon, Bryn, Emma and I went to see if I got any ribbons. I got 13. :o). I'm happy. I saved the good stuff to take to the show on Saturday!

Kathy, Sissy. Take some time to smell the roses!

Maryville, TN(Zone 7a)

Mmmmm loves scalloped potatoes & pork chops or Au Gratin potatoes w/ pork chops. One granddaughter called them slimy potatoes a few years back so that's what we all call them now.

Pictures, pictures Joyce. How exciting 13 out of 14 ribboned Wow!

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 3b)

Hi everyone!!
Love you :-)

I had a lovely phone call from a friend of mine. She's moving house after 64 years of living with her parents, then her mom alone. Her mom's gone into a nursing home (this spring) and now Marlene cannot handle the upkeep of such a large house, so she's moving into a basement suite of a home her nephew owns. Imagine moving 64 years worth of "stuff".........
Anyway, the reason she called is to ask if I want her weaving loom & warp loom! She says it's beautiful wood (I haven't seen it, but Bob has and he's the one who told her I might want it). I DO!! We'll go tomorrow night to pick it up. It's about 5' Bob says........ dunno where we'll put it, in a mobile home .... oh well lol I'll find a place!! Apparently there is a Weaving Guild I could join and they would help me figure out how to put it together....... it's in pieces, but all the pieces are "together" in one place. I'm excited to see it!!
