Plant Propagation -Part 3 -The Basics

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

We are not allowed to dig anywhere but on our own property. If you get permission from the landowner, then it is OK, otherwise, no.

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Ju what was your method for germinating Echinacea and Japanese Maple?

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Robin Japanese Maple , Long winter stratify it has taken two full seasons for this sprout to happen ,,
Echinacea was pre- stratified
These were late winter sow in sprouter , with a quirk , (a wrong ) they sprouted (2) and died in the cold . Others I brought in to protect , A full month later they sprouted (these in the pick ,
Very slow to grow these compared to last fall attempt of which five grew very rapidly , one survived ,

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Mipil, he put them in his magic bag. huh JU?

Evelyn, I meant on Forest Service property. Not other folks property. 75%, at least, can't remember the exact amount, of our county is owned by the National Forest Service. Think that is why our county is so poor. All of that is off the tax roles. Any money they get from selling the logged trees, goes into the school funds for the county. That is all the tax payers get from it.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Sorry JU, I should not have been a SmartA-- with a new person on our thread.

Robin, JU has more patience to wait on plants than anyone I know. I would have quit watering them half way thru that.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Robin Knows Who I am . Some of this Robin has seen before .
And back to say ;
White Swan
Pow wow Wild Berry Echinacea seeds will germinate anytime .
Early fall has been best for me , but losses are bad . these in spring this year we will have to wait and see ,,
I have wild purple everywhere , including a blooming today .

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Thanks so much regarding germination info, I guess I'll hurry up and wait for my JP, lol. I'm still getting a few sprouts here and there from my WS efforts, I sowed both then. Perhaps I should start a new batch of Echinacea though.

One more question; do your roasters have drainage holes in the bottom?

Jnette, I agree with you, it doesn't make any economic sense for the Government to own such massive amounts of land. Unless, they make a good enough return on fines...but look at all the power the ownership yields!

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

I don't understand roasters , pots and trays have holes , lol My sprouters do not .

Robin what kind of Coneflowers Echinacea are you trying to start ?

Truthfully though , government owns everything right down to the pennies in your jar or pocket , All that has to happen is that claim of ownership, poof , all bad !
Simplified
Purple coneflower or native , wintersown where they are to grow ,lightly scratched in with light mulch
Most turn a dry flower seed cone upside down and plant it.
Commercial seeds are usually ready to grow .
White swan your own technique anytime , )as any seedlings with general info ,
Wild Berry Summer or early fall . mulch well (I tried to late in fall ) failed .
Anyway those or these I know , have done . I have a small Milkshake that looks like it barely made it back this year) and a lot of reading from folks who say, they do not always return even in good seasons ( the milkshake is more tender ?)

Sprouters, yes sprouters (I thought you referred to them as chicken roasters at one point)! I WS E. Pow Wow, nothing sprouted yet. What is the germination rate with an upside down cone? Do they all germinate that close together?

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Up above the pics 5 or 6 plants of two flower cones (photo 4&5 ) not good as professional or commercial seed that way ,
As two how many you want to grow , it's a ratio though , I guess ,

Here a non thinned group , that up beside those above this year Three or four plants there , one partial or old seed cone , (if I recall correctly )

If your Pow wow does not germinate soon , the odds of them doing so will drop dramatically ,
You might get one , if you run them through wintersow again , that is , if they were not commercial seed , commercial seed of Pow Wow you can start anytime of year ,

But commercial seeds will often freeze to death during winter (i don't know why as to that )

As always Ju, you're a blessing...thanks!

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Well if you decide you want more purple or a white swan later (as a fall root LMK )
I' am trying Goji seeds and Hardy Kiwi (the grape size ones takes 6 months to start these) , next week the Japanese Orange
Week after some new Bamboo ,
I have some Baptisia seeds soaking now ,
Some New salix Discolor or Pussy willow cuttings that are growing , (by comparison the willows are about the same as to the clematis for size .
trying for a few hardier plants the Goji and the Orange unless I can super grow them might be indoors this winter ,,
False nettle
Bela Lugosi Daylily from wintersow ;

Aw, that's so sweet, thanks. I just might take you up on it if I can tempt you with something on my 'have' list, cause I looked at your 'want' list and don't have anything on there.

Your Daylily is huge...nice.

We are not allowed to pick or take anything from National Forest property. I am sure the rules apply everywhere.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

I haven't even thought about it in years. You might be right.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

How about a box of Catnip ? My garden and it's allowed , well almost , he he .
Okay I have indigo , and Goji Soaking and it is time to plant the seeds.

I just rescued a long hair cat that was dumped at a nearby farm, he's raising his six toed paw, yeowling (new word) me, me! My DH says he has paws like a catchers mitt...what would you expect from a former pitcher, oh well, perhaps all the better to catch with my dear. I think his paws look cool, almost like having an opposing thumb.

Time to sow that catgrass seed!

Lake Stevens, WA(Zone 8a)

is his name going to be "Yogi Catta"?
We want pics!

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Lol...great chuckle there MLM. Hubby would have to love him then! I'll start a new thread with pics.

I have been missing this. It doesn't kick in in my computer when you post. Great pictures JU. You have patience I will never have. Or ever had. Jen

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Jen, do you still want a corkscrew vine? I do believe you sent me some seeds a couple of seasons ago.I have 2 plants. I guess I don't have enough sun to get it to thrive.

It might be too hot to ship right now. Maybe in the fall if not now. They survived nicely inside over winter.

A.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Sure Amanda, mine didn't germinate. Really!! In the house huh? Did yours get the little ants? I understand they need them to bloom??? Did yours get seeds? I was surprised. I picked mine up and lo and behold, there were those little ants!! I didn't think mine got them. But, sure enough they did. Now that was the first one I had years ago. I haven't had one in a long time. Since the first one.

Gosh, can't imagine your not having enough sun. But, I would love to try it. Again :0)

Too hot huh? lol, it is cold here, and raining every day or night. However, things are soon to change. Suppose to be in the 80s in a few days. Thanks Amanda.

What is that one JU?

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Grown from seed , by yours truly ,, who knows ???

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

It is very unique. It looks like one of them, can't remember the name, but is greenish white.

Anybody have great plans for tomorrow?

I guess the friend is coming back tomorrow to finish putting the emitters in the plants. Sure will be nice to have it done. The plants will love it too. The only day I am not having it on is Sunday, because I have designated that as fertilizer day since I will never have appointments on that day unless it is an emergency.

I didn't do anything, but try to get things for him etc. Not much, but I sure hurt by 6 o'clock. I was ready to quit. I tried sending him home several times, but he kept working. Think he just wanted to get it done asap.

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 10b)

Jnette, pardon my dumb question, what are emitters?

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

emitters are the outlets for the water to the plants. Some are sprayers, some drippers, etc. I got what is called a "soaker hose", or what Drip Works called it a "dripper hose". It is a 1/4 inch tubing with holes every 12 inches. Well, I have a lot to learn about this system. The only time I had any experience with an automatic watering system is when we lived in Seattle I installed one on my lawn and shrubs and it was strictly sprinklers. LOL, you thought I was going to say rain clouds in Seattle didn't you?

So anyway emitters emit the water from the tubing.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Here's some lemon seeds ,
The ones that turned brown a few days after the coat of the seed was peeled off .. Are germinating
Others that did not turn brown , dissolved away .

Only one of my trifoliate orange seeds turned brown to Hardcoat after peeling the seed coat .

These are the lemon seed . five days after peeling ,,
How about that , pictures too ! lol ^_^
I re posted this on the germination forum also

Great job JU!! What is A trifoliate Orange? How did you germinate the lemons? My daughter uses a damp coffee filter in a zip loc bag. Swears by them.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Hi You !!! Jen Deno Method for these ,
It did not use to be necessary to peel the seed coats off of them when I was a teenager I grew citrus all the time without peeling the seeds ..
Things change , or what ? lol
Bitter orange , Hardy orange , Many are used for root stock .. Small sour oranges with huge Thorns on the plant .
Slow progress
1 false nettle
2 falling over catgrass green
3 white catgrass
4 the white coneflowers
5 Goji ,,
You have seen them before , but still alive and growing although slowly
