Looking good JU. Very healthy looking.

juhur last year I got a gigantic drill bit for my power drill, to plant bulbs with! I haven't used it yer but I thought it might be useful for planting. What are you 'drilling' with?

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

mlmlakestevens) Fence post hole drillers , Also can be used for well drilling heads if you have a shaft for them , Mixes paint , cement ,and drills bulb holes the one I use most often , the later , Short about a ft , fits a 1/4 inch drill .. easy to use .
I don't seem to be able to do clear pics tonight /

look like this does yours ?

Mimi, let us know how you like it for planting bulbs. I have seen them, but what happens if you hit a rock? Guess it stops.

JU, yours is probably tougher, since it is used for other things. I've seen those too.

I have never had bulbs to plant so never got either one. I just don't like the idea of having the foliage left to take care of so never have planted bulbs.

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

I will be leaving a lot of bulbs behind when move. Mostly daffodils, but others as well.

Evelyn, imagine the very pleasant surprise the new buyers will get from your bulb planting next spring. Lucky people! I've never been that lucky with a new (to me) house.

Here is my drill bit. I will report back when I have used it.

Meant to ask you, do you see the two new leaves? Whoops, I sent you the wrong one on that first one. Wonder what happened to the other one on there. Forget that one unless you can tell me what is wrong with it? It's a gardenia and got something that looks like blackspot. I am going to send it to the people I bought it from and ask them. jen Will sen you the other one now.

What is the first one ? or suppose to be ?
Yes , the second is the Catalpa Tree ..
Hot summer day here , finally got here ..lol
Sitting in the air conditioning I am , Hanging Spider plants earlier ..lol

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Well a little cross posting there . Yes indeed , How nice the little tree is still growing , Hot weather to cooler weather it will likely grow a few more ..
Goooooooooood lol
Once Permanent in planted place , It should make six or 7 ft , next year , after that a big small tree ,,lol
My 3 yr old Yellow poplar , is going to finish this year as tall as the house ,,

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

JU, you must have that magic touch to get them to grow that fast. That first one was a gardenia that the leaves are turning yellow and brown. Any ideas?? jen

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

light , water . fertilizer , your guess , your plant , usually one of those it is ,, other two Humidity and critters ,,
It does not get that way fast though , so it does not always correct fast either ,

Makes it tough sometimes , doesn't it ?

Jen They will probably reply about pruning and keeping the soil slightly acid , I went browsing , Pot growing Gardenia indoors or out , requires pruning , plants to tend to get leggy , not good for the plant ,
I suppose you might know any of this ,

JU, I haven't had it long enough to get leggy. I have ordered some Chelated Iron from Amazon and it will be here Thursday. In the meantime I will give it some Epsom Salts and peroxide and see if I can stop it. I wonder where it got it. I haven't got anything that has that disease. You said it takes a while for it to show? Do you think it was on the way when I got it?

BTW, been meaning to ask you what the material was that you had my Catalpa in when you sent it? It looked to be clay of some sort and straw in it. Weird. What was it? It was doing good. It is getting two new leaves so moving it didn't seem to hurt it any. It is looking good. jen

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

What the Catalpa was in was old regular garden earth , very old cypress mulch , and various cut stems of weeds and flowers ,
Basic clay and debris mulch , it works for Trees and shrubs , My Patio pile of clean up ,,lol
But , the tree seemed to like it so do some others , all that matters , that was , (or is .

All I know is they prune Gardenia rather small , and regular , I have never grown one to memory , but do remember a family member that was given one as a gift .

Mimi- I have the same drill bit. It is wonderful! I used it to plant a ton of bulbs over the last couple of years, so easy! But there is a little trick: hold it firmly, maybe even with both hands, and gently work it down in short thrusts. If you just push it down in one go, when you hit firmer earth your wrist will feel like it's getting twisted off.

Lake Stevens, WA(Zone 8a)

Thx! I have been browsing the bulb catalogs for fall planting...

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Yes that is a good Tip there Pfg ,
Hold it with both hands , I work it with one hand on the trigger and grip , the other hand over the top where the drill vent it is , (slight up and down motion) The motion gives a chance to the device to clear , ( I do a lot of clay drilling or augering) working only a couple inches at a time , otherwise , you get your hand twisted off ! ,
Another , because I use a post hole auger or bit as they are , Remove any sod from the top , if any is there .
It clogs them or or makes it impossible to drill sometimes ,
Other than that , there easy to use , I use a sawsall to cut sod or heavy roots from my way , rarely though ,,
Anyplace you those where have been gardening a while , and poof your done , quick time ,,
