Watermelon and Yellow tomatoes were all that were sprouted in the Ground .
All those up above are alive and doing pretty well ,The ones sprouted and set out also are doing well and were a lot more resistant to cold ,
The sprouter started with four or five days of good warm weather before it got cold again , were a lot more cold resistant than those plants pot grown for a while ,,
Still those considered weed type plants do better for me ,, even if a weed from someplace they all are or were to begin with . Feverfew , oregano , Wild Fleabane, and aster, Daylily are about the only long term plants that are doing that well .
I read this earlier today , and had trouble typing ,so I waited a while , I did not get much done today and this evening I Deno started some Bush cucumbers and Blonde cucumbers ,
I am only using the Zinnia to fill where I lost bunches of perennial plants (that is why so many )
Plant Propagation -Part 3 -The Basics
How much room do you think you have to give each zinnia? Are you growing the big flowered ones or the smaller, in between, or???? When you grow so many it seems like you might as well get a low chair or sit on the ground and plan on the day. I can't get down that low or I would even do that to weed. I would dislocate my new hip. OH NO!!!!
Bob did good today. I gave him a shopping list and the only one he did different, not necessarily wrong, was he got a different Dr. Earth fertilizer than I wanted. The woman working there talked him into a different one and he finally told me they only had 2 different ones, and neither were the one I wanted. But, it did have some of the micro nutrients etc. that I wanted so that is ok. Anyway, it is a lot of work that I doubt I will get to until Wednesday, which is good, and then just the afternoons of Thursday and Friday. No Tuesday at all.
My tomatoes are getting really beat up by the rain out there. Don't know where Bob could put them. I think he might be able to find a place in the kitchen.
It does not take me long to plant a sprout Jen , but , I agree , it can be a lot of bending .
You remember the loppers conversation , You can also use a sharp spade to weed with , in the end of a hollow piece pipe , have weed more that you like that way but Who does not , ?
A very light long handled shovel , that is kept sharp ,also works ..
California Giant
Cactus Flowered
Pom Pom Mixed
My own that have mutated ..
Going to be beautiful JU. Won't fit in with your moon concept tho. Have you given that up for this year? I think that is something you have to work on each year until you finally get it done. Too much of a change to get done all at once.
Where is Nancy?? Haven't heard from her for a while. Wonder how their trip was. Weren't they driving down the Oregon coast or something? Have we heard from her since then? Maybe.
I got a pkg of Salvia the other day in the mail. Was thinking I could direct sow them and then read the instructions on the label and it said to start them in the house in individual pony pack type things. So, that would mean they have to be planted. They are Salvia Salsa Scarlet Bi-color. Quite pretty. I was planning on putting in about 20 of them. We'll see. I might get a friend to plant them if I give her half. Ya think? Looks like I have about 50 seeds. Enough for next year if I like them. I really have never been too fond of Salvia. But these little guys look like they are wearing skirts. LOL
I would have no idea about Nancy , has been a while hasn't it ?
Yes the moon garden will happen slowly if at all , (it probably will)
Wild Aster Wild Fleabane , White Thalictrum
White Coneflower (2 Types Wild Hyacinth
Shasta daisy, Korean Mint , Peony , and an iris Are the white flowers so far , A place to put them together will be the doing ... lol
Cross post , Salvia sound cute Jen . I have Lady in Red so far .
About 4inches or so is what is said for zinnia , I don't know though , I plant them is all I know ..lol
Are you saying to plant the zinnias 4 inches apart? Seems pretty close to me. For the big ones. I wonder if you pinch them when they are small if they will bush. Have you tried that.? I pinch all flowers that I think it would help. Like dahlias etc. If you pinch dahlias you don't have to stake them 'cause they have so many plants coming up they hold each other up. Think that works with most plants. I am going to pinch 2 of my tomatoes I see are going crazy. And I have never pinched a tomato.
Got my sweet potatoes today. we have to put those in too. Going to plant 2 Brussel Sprouts and 2 tomatoes in the raised bed (compost pile) with them. We'll see how it all works.
If I plant Zinnia in a three foot long strip about a foot wide , They will outgrow each other to 6ft tall or more ,
So far and more sprouting are for widening where they are now . I let them free grow , like old time free Grazing ,lol
No doing anything besides feeding , they grow like a blooming hedge when their fed good , old time stuff with me ..
Wow!! No idea zinnias would grow that tall. Must be because they are crowded and you are feeding them??? What do you feed them?
Osmocote,Compost , Super Grow , Moo-nure , Compost tea , Molasses tea , Spray-n-Grow , Miracle-Gro Whatever seems right .. At the time .. Or any of these I happen to have ,,
Sounds like you have the same stuff I do. I always try something once and have it around after I try something else. Manure tea is good, also alfalfa tea. But it stinks like crazy. Pretty good tho if you can stand the smell. If you put molasses in it works best.
I am looking for advice about starting Agastache , Have several started , I know they do not grow true from seed ,
however , soil and location , potting them , anything from the time they are seedlings , all advice or any is appreciated ..
juhur I used to grow nice Agastache when I gardened on beach sand. I couldn't kill them. Now just a mile away my soil is clay. None survive, even though it is a slope so water never puddles up. They liked full sun, were pathetic with afternoon shade.
The winters are so mild here, sometimes they would not die back in winter, so I would cut them back to the lower leaves, otherwise they got pretty straggly. Also I found cutting them back after flowering kept them nice and bushy. Good luck!
They might be like a lot of the flowers I plant by seed, I pinch almost all of them. Even dahlias from tubers I pinch because making them bushy they don't get leggy, one stalk, and you don't have to stake them. pinching means a lot to almost all plants. Might should say flowers????
I had a Salix Interior I had to cut a few branches off of for light reasons , 8 days ago I put a 5ft branch in a 3 ft compost bag .
After losing all it leaves the third and fourth day , it has new leaves and small roots today ,,
Growing in 8 days , poof ,, what a weed ..
Have a few of last years clematis cuttings that leafed the past few days .
Slow about it with those ,
JU, what is that, Salix interior???? What is it, a compost bag? You mean like those black trash bags? I thought you had a magic bag. Like Robin's grandmother used to tell all the grandkids, she had a magic pocket. It had money in it.
LOL Jen , I keep old potting and garden soil, and mulch bags for making compost in , A salix interior is a Sandbar Willow Tree , Otherwise known as a Ditch willow as where t usually grows . Ditches, Ponds , swamps , Sandbars , that type of place .
Works good when you want to root a large branch of something for yourself .
No , not any Magic Bags ,, lol I wish ,, he , he ,
Would be nice wouldn't it? We did get a couple more planters done today. Had to go in to the pharmacy to get some pain patches the dr. had prescribed for me so didnd't think I would have time to get anything done, but we have so many plants out here I had to do some.
Do any of you know how to mend a clay pot? I have one that has about 1/3 of it just came off of the rest. I love the thing and they are becoming very expensive in that size. A large one.
Depending on the break size , if the break is even , try Gorilla Glue , if not even , Tuffa and the Glue .
The glue does not last a real long time in the bottle . so you might consider coating part of the clay pots with it , makes them stronger , a throw away utility brush or old toothbrush to apply it with , that kind of thing , lol
I forgot or modeling clay and Glue mixed to make it match ... if your pots still look like clay ...

I would like to try the gorilla glue but Bob is ready to toss it. But, it isn't his and he probably doesn't like it. Or just doesn't care. I think it is worth saving. It is one that's been fired. Not just left setting in the sun to bake. I've had those too. I had some beautiful ones I brought back from Mexico 30 or more years ago and they were so cool. Had a flat tire on the freeway and had to unload the trunk. Looked like we were trying to sell them on the freeway. LOL
Oh well , I did know you were not allowed to play with glue , Apologies ,,
Slime (clear ) or concrete sealer would also work .. but hey , glue is glue ,, well almost anyway ..
I use Silicone to mend my clay pots. It comes in tubes, for sealing caulking in tubs, etc. It works really well.
Pfg , I have a couple tubes of clear Silicone as concrete sealer I use them on my Tuffa concoctions , I was wondering what the pots really were , it did not come to mind .
I use all those above for little unglazed clay pots , and others that break from "cheap plastic)
Depends on what I have or have been working on ..
I have trouble keeping the nicer pots ... things happen .
In keeping with thread , the little clematis from last year (cuttings) are back , although not many , and Have a big old willow branch on the go .
A Lavender that broke a couple weeks ago . little new sprouts in the tray to the right , up against the the larger stems . maybe ?
Ok JU, you mess with this stuff all the time. Do I use Gorilla Glue, or Silicone? You tell me and I will get it. I told Bob tonight I want to take a try at fixing the pot. He went for it. Guess he knew it wouldn't matter what he thought if I wanted to do it I would. Jen
Jen I believe A clear silicone( outside , and a utility brush or a popsicle stick is probably the easiest .
If you get too much silicone on the pot you can trim it off with a knife ,,
it is not all that forgiving a material too work with , but as you all said glazed , that is the best match , Pfg is correct ...
What are you talking about glazed JU? You lost me.
I don't know if I said, but the break is about 1/3 of the pot. Might be silly to try. But, as tube of silicone is cheaper than a new pot. Besides, I can use a couple bungee cords to hold it together for a while. :0)
Ok, I will stick with the topic a minute. I bought a half dozen begonia bulbs on line. They were in the post office for almost a month while I was in the hospital. They had not let Bob know they were there. The box was also crushed.
When I got home and sent him looking for them, I opened them and 4 of the 6 had sprouts on them. I planted all of them, and they got a few small leaves and then just sat there. So, I wrote to the company asking why and what do I do now.
They wrote back saying the tubers were too wet. That is exactly what they do when they are too wet. Let them dry out a couple of weeks and then give them a little bit of water.
I have never heard that, but they should know, so that is what I am going to do now.
Any of you heard of that?
Up above you said the pots had been fired , not just left in the sun to bake , someplace about the pots were shiny ?
Your question about glazed Jen
No, they don't have to be glazed to be fired. Firing can melt the grit (you would know what that is JU) in the clay, turning it to a glass that makes the product more waterproof etc. I don't think I said anything about shiny, if I did it was not in conjunction with this pot.
When I was working in ceramics, we fired in a kiln, the wet greenware, making it a bisque and then you did whatever you wanted to with that. i.e. glazing it, painting it, or whatever. When I called it "wet" greenware, I meant it had just been sitting on the shelf to dry prior to firing. Didn't mean it was actually wet as in water in it. jen
I use it on all clay pots, glazed or unglazed. I cut off the top of the tube, and lay a bead down along one edge of the break. Then I stick the other piece on it and wipe off the excess. Simple, really. If the pot needs support to hold it until the silicone dries, sometimes I tape it. If you're patient and wait until each one dries, you can even mend multiple breaks.
OK Pam, you have convinced me. Whether I think this pot can be saved or not, I am going to try the silicone. This is a really big break, but I will take pictures along the way. I am going to dump the little bit of soil that is in it, out, and let it dry good before I start this. Will show you all my experiment per Pam. LOL, thanks for the encouragement Pam. If it doesn't work, you can say I did something wrong. Jen
Good luck!
However, when I do this, I think I am going to have to post the pictures etc. on the back porch or somewhere else. it obviously does not have anything to do with this topic. Will let you know. jen
So, how much farther are you going to go with your fountain JU? You sure have a good imagination. When does the water come in? Did you say you had a pump for it? Think you did. jen
We will talk on another thread Jen .
Started some oat grass .
Mustard and spinach in the garden
Lots of marigolds sprouting .
Moved a Mikshake coneflower and a Pink " Scabiosa ,
Nice when it rains .
have a pear cutting and some willows leafing ..
more to come
JU, have you ever tried transplanting plants from the wild into your garden? If so, how do they do? I'm not sure it is possible. Something wrong with the way I do it. Do you have Salal there? I guess I am going to have to check plantfiles. I am not sure how you spell it. It is a wild plant here and I would love to have it growing above my driveway. I will check google and plantfiles both.
I might need your magic bag. jen
I am not sure , but it is illegal here to take wild plants , from the wild , My milkweeds are from seeds from wild plants here though .
Most of the if I am patient, they show up in the garden sooner or later anyway , lol
You have more patience than, who was it, Methusala? Was he the patient one?
Unless the laws have changed here, you cannot dig within 500 feet of a state highway, or so many feet from a stream.
I obviously would need to check this out. I have forgotten a lot. jen
