Plant Propagation -Part 3 -The Basics

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Only tried this time with a few of the Pepper seeds a first attempt ,
I have noticed the Pepper seeds turn sideways to root sprout up , and to orient their self . We will see what happens ..

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

3,4,5 Salvia, Peppers, Marigolds , Zinnia are potted up in the other room since before.
1 Early work on a small garden watermelon set ,2 Peach tree cuttings .

Where are the Peach tree cuttings? Don't see ethose. Don't expect to see th watermelons. Do you have somewhere to put these when they start growing JU?

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

The second pic Jen/ and yes , peppers are Black pearl in to a pot they will go .
Salvias out front along the drive where it is hot , Marigolds will go along near the Watermelons
Cracker jack Marigolds and Spary that is , the bur marigolds ,go in a pot hanging on the front porch

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Yeah I know you have places to put them when the weather cooperates. But they will have grown quite a bit between now and then. That is what I mean. When do you plan on setting them out where you just said?

Guess that is what I have a problem with. When they get to a certain size and need to be planted outside but it isn't warm enough yet and can't count on it not freezing anymore.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

zinnia were setting outside yesterday ,in on the plant table until next warm day .
Cuttings are outside , peaches will leaf and root when they do .Peppers are only now getting true leaves so by the time comes to set them out they will be about the right size .
I have some Salix discolor from last year , the one the ground hog ate , after time to get cuttings , none leafed out , some bloom bud froze ,
But I kept them all in a bag , and at least two of them have live buds that are are sizing like their going to leaf out .
one has a hair fine small root , so the wood is still alive , and with hormone coating , maybe , might , just maybe . get a few to grow again ,,
My tomato plants got three to four feet tall last year , so I am waiting to start them .
I can grow those plants really fast .30+ years of technique , sometimes I get it right , those tomato plants have grown over three nearly four feet for me in 40 hrs , give or take 6 or 8 hours .
I have my share of finding room for some sometimes though , it happens to us all Jen .
Good luck with yours ! hopes for bloom season ..^_^

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

OK JU, tell me your secret. How did you get them to grow that fast in that short time? I have some, can't think of what it is, GBH or something like that, that is suppose to do that. I got it a couple years ago from a guy in Canada, but never used it. Now I can't find it. Figures doesn't it?

Do you use stuff like that? jen

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

To be honest about it, I don't really know , lol
It has to do with an outdoor temperature , if you set them at just the right window (time) the humidity , the light , the earth(or soil) the size of the new plant , everything just right . POOF and their huge in two days ,,
Years of observational technique .. Watch and learn , and you will ...

It happens right at frost change time , frost seems to happen here , last one ,(frost) right at the optimum grow time , I lose a few trying, the way I grow them from time to time .
Right after I mean minutes after the last frost breaks , they have to be in the ground and growing ,
as near as I can understand , it must have to do , with exciting the same hormone in the plant , that excites the seed to grow , or germinate really , right at the first minute they germinate , the same thing can happen in the plant ,
All together I have no idea of what that is , and I am open to suggestions , as to what that might be ,
No hocus pocus chemicals , no fancy this or that , plan old observation technique ..

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Wow JU, that would take a lot of practice and, like you said, observation. I doubt I would eve take the time to do that. Guess I'll just have to watch mine plug along an inch at a time. LOL, life's too short to spend it all with the plants.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

40 years ago it was my science project ,
remembering Butryc Acid ,, I use to grind up a potato for those in the ground , worms add humic acid to go with that . (keeps em growing )
I failed though because I never isolated the hormone that does that .
Probably why I still watch , sub-concious version of I hated to fail .. lol something like that maybe ..

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

LOL, JU the science guy. Good for you. I was never that interested in science. I didn't know worms make humic acid. I just buy it. Where was the hormone? How do potatoes have anything to do with Butryc Acid?

So those are what makes the tomatoes grow that fast? You know, I planted a lot of my tomatoes in Happy Frog mix last year and they did grow a lot. They were so big that I couldn't get around to tie them up. I am going to put half of them on the other deck this year.

Maybe I will use the Happy Frog again and just add the Epsom Salts, Mychorizae, and some Osmocote, then I should have good plants. Right?

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

As a potato breaks down , that is one of the chemicals . go to you tube and you have making stink bombs from that .

60 degrees tomorrow , to set out in the sun , 24 now ,
Go with what works for you Jen , that is what to do with Tomato plants ..
I tried some zinnia pics they came out to fuzzy , try again later ..

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

OH good grief, you just reminded me that when we lived in Moses Lake they grew Dry Land Potatoes there because they didn't have any water, and they had a lot of potato sheds they worked in, sorting them etc. Well, they ALSO had, along side the freeway, a huge hole they had dug and they dumped all the bad etc. potatoes in there,to let them rot, making fertilizer. It smelled so terrible. You have smelled paper plants where they smelled so bad? Like sulfur? Well, that was 10 times worse. That was 55 years ago.

They have closed them down since then. Probably the EPA. LOL So, anyway JU, what is it they are getting from there? Butryc Acid?

Gotta get busy. ttyl,

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

That's a growth hormone , All your rooting powders have mainly that in them , Active ingredients on the bottle .lol

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

I'll bet that is what was in the stuff I got. Wish I could find it. I didn't look at youtube. But I'll bet it would make a good stink bomb.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Jen I think your mix covers it all ,,

I have a Japanese Maple sprouting after 2yrs of stratification , Good thing it was not a had to done or anything ,, goodness ,,, Still , that has been a while ...
Now I am hoping it lives ,, lol

How is your weather right now? Is it still snowing?

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Hi Evelyn , ^_^ It's 30 degrees ,
gray skies ,
cold ,

You know anything about Yellow tripod yucca ? hardiness , germination ,?

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Nope! Sorry!

Why is Admin asking us to add the threads to Bookmarks now? Are all of these clogging their system? Then maybe they need to get a bigger system. Why in the world would we bookmark them?

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Some people have requested the "tags" which is now the "bookmarks".

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

67 today odds and ends going , slowly though
44 tonight I'm leaving a tray of Salvia outside tonight to find out if they can take the temperature

I never got a single vitex to sprout, have the seeds in my aquaponics tray over the tilapia, they were on some floating plastic media so they were damp but not drowned. Too busy to mess with them for now. Wish they would start from simple cuttings.

Do you have many of your tomatoes outside with those temps? I just have a few out and I am going to plant my second one in a large container. The temps are nice now, except next week is supposed to be cooler. We never got our late snow, but still they do not like the lower night temps. I suppose I will cover those two at night when the temps get lower next week.

I have been taking my basement seedlings outside during the day.

You are doing a good job with so many seedlings. I always seem to lose a few, and some just don't even get started....I usually just toss them and start over, though I am getting impatient....

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

evelyn_inthegarden' Only one tomato plant started , I slow and slower in the garden so far ,
I am re planting some zinnia , only a couple when they stay alive , lots more .
Planting some lettuce , have debris stalks to cut and clean ,
I will try planting a Salvia if I get to it ,
A couple red Russian Kale plants to plant also .These are test seedlings , My Monarda , My phlox that grew all last year , no return ,,
The white coneflower seedling that died in the sprouter outside has me mumbling to myself ,,
Others are all growing, so something odd happened ,,
This week hopefully all the plants will start to grow , real slow to start here .
Be back in a while with pics hopefully

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

First and last rue , annuals under bottles , daylily daffs cutleaf coneflowrs in the background .
Time to re-mulch .. or close

You look pretty busy JU. That is great!! And your vole guard looks very alert. LOL.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Lol Jen How ya doing ? .. I just got through planting German chamomille and zinnia in a sprouter , prairrie cornflowers Centaurea also . more lettuce also ..
Buckwheat , alfalfa ,, not busy . having fun ..

The menagerie is growing ,,,,, (is there a garden joke there ? ^_^

Seems like I just get in the middle of planting things when I have to quit because a Therapist or Nurse or someone comes by. I have had a lot to do, and then Bob decides to do something he is going to do. So, the whole week has been shot.

I was even going to make some pumpkin bread but haven't had time to do it.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Well since I can't sleep ,, here's my kindergarten sprouters ,, remember these from kindergarten ?

Two water bottles with the center removed an entire bottle (top) to show difference , great for beans and peas and such
2nd pic , a zinnia sprout in three days just to left of center ,, If would just stay above 40 degrees I would really be happy ...
#4 A night blooming walking Catflower sitting still (how did that get in there ?)^_^

Guess I grew up in the wrong era JU. We didn't have kindergarten. I went to school where there were 3 grades in one room and one teacher. chuckl as Kitt would say.

JU, a question about the kale. When you want to use the kale, do you cut it, or pull the whole plant? .If you cut it, does it grow new leaves like some of the lettuces do? Or spinach? In other words, I am trying to figure out how and where to plant them.

Should I be starting them and then transplant them, or plant the seed where they will stay? I am thinking of planting them in a long, 36" planter. Do they have a tap root? Would a planter like that be deep enough?

Lotsa questions, but guess I won't know unless I ask.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Yes, You can do Kale like lettuce or spinach . Just cut and use young leaves like leaf lettuce and spinach a bunch of others
Without the labels. the water bottles remind me of science Kit items ..

With most seeds for me it is better to sprout them then plant . If you have a nice place to plant the seeds outdoors , plant them . they will grow .

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

outside 33 degrees last night

So, what are all those JU? Think I am going to get one of those bullet things to make smoothies. Then I can use my kale like everyone else. I can use the kind of kale you sent me seeds for like that can't I JU?

I have so much to do and am running out of room. Should have known I would. I got almost all the tomatoes up-potted, but had to re-plant some of the seeds. Most of them had really sturdy stems. looked good.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

First and second are the Kale I sent you seeds of , Red Russian ,
I don't know if I will get to the dwarf Blue Curly Kale .. Might be fall , to do .
Third is two Kale that are together with lettuce.
Number 4 is leaf lettuce
#5 is Garlic with ground ivy invading .. time to weed already ..lol

#1 below is a wintersown poppy from my Paper roll cubes ,
Second is zinnia seeds in a sprouter ,I planted one tonight , if the sprout lives outside , I will start planting them as they sprout ..

Yes Carrots Kale Tomato added to a little fruit , grind and juice in a blender to taste ... not always easy ..lol

Here's some lupines from another thread ; #3 is a seedling that grew last season , still small , but there . These did not bloom last year , the large one's . their about five years old
I will burn a little wood or debris in the grill every so often to place around them , natural habitat for these is often a burn or fire has happened , they like the potash minerals , so I am told ..
They also like the other plants up next to them . I presume when they grow bumped up against another plant it keeps them cooler , this species likes it that way , cooler ..
Have not tried Fleabane as of yet , but asters and grass like plants it seems to like for company
The only plant I get a lot of trouble from is the Milk Thistle . they are thug , not only will they crowd , they kill other plants , even a vigorous Cutleaf Coneflower rarely kills other plants here . although it to is difficult to contain here.
Older Daylily tolerate the Thistle plants , about all though , they kill almost all the others I have

Thumbnail by juhur7 Thumbnail by juhur7 Thumbnail by juhur7
Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

oh well guess this is not to interesting ,,
Still I found out sprouts planted directly are much more cold tolerant than my seedling plants .
Now I am trying to learn how everybody gets their 5-10 inch seedling so cold tolerant and tough,
I have almost made to the level of the plant conversations around these threads here ..

Ju, all of your experimenting is very interesting. For some reason these have not been alerting my computer to new posts so I didn't know you were posting.

So, how are these plants doing now? I would think that of course if they sprouted from seed in the ground that the seedlings would be more tolerant of the weather. Are you saying versus sprouting with the sprouter and then planting them? I think that would work more in warmer weather, but how can you possibly know what to expect this year with the ups and downs?

I wouldn't get discouraged because of it. I would just wait until it is so hot that they wilt from the heat instead of die because of the cold. LOL, sorry, I know it is frustrating. Jen
