Ditto to Betty's comment. Take care and above all be safe...please. As safe as is possible under these conditions.
Hi - Too tired to read everything but I'm back to say I'm healing well. Hd staples (stitches) out this morning. They are overwhelmed with how well I am doing. I need to work the hamstrings to get my knee to lie flat. Painful but necessary. I will be back. Am going to Physicla Theraphy and knee classes and constantly stretching. Groan. Still foggy from dugs. big hugs, katie
You are so right Jean ! Too funny... when we lived in Old Jefferson we had a Boat and loved to "play" on the Amite River / Diversion Canal.
Then we moved here and it was quite some time until I realized that you can walk to and see the Amite River at our little neighborhood park.
Felt safer in the old neighborhood because here we have some HUGE trees... and I've now seen one huge water oak come down (from our yard to our neighbor's) and what damage branches can do. A neighbor joked that we had a giant "target" on our roof. This house makes me nervous.
Crissy - can you email your storm shelter to me please ?
Antsy.. going to walk outside while I still can. It's VERY windy and I can't believe the storm is still so far away...
HUGS
Mary
Katie, wonderful to see you post..hope you are out of harms ways re the storms..am sure you are!! Sounds like you are an exceptional patient, doing all you can to help the healing process..when do you think you will be able to head home?
Mary, glad you are home for the next few days..do they make you use up vacation or sick days or is it something they cover re wages? Was it hard going coming home..much like you I've trees on the front yard that every time the wind comes up or storm rolls through I wonder if they will come through the roof.
Don't like the sound of what you are experiencing weather wise and your comment about the storm still being so FAR away..that causes great concern
Mary, were you in BR for Gustav? Looks like this is going to be a combination of slow moving Allison and 90+mph winds of Gustav. I know the "targeted" feeling. we have two 60 foot tall pines in the back yard along with a 50 foot pin oak and on the driveway side of the house a really old, 60 ft Live oak about 50 ft from the house....Buh-dum Buh-dum (shark music...grin) Power loss is probably the biggest concern after possible wind/tree damage. If your freezer isn't full, add a few containers of water and let them freeze....you can always move them into the fridge to help keep it cool. If you have a deep freeze, fill it up too. a freezer will stay frozen for 24 hours or more if full and you don't open the door. Make sure you have a full propane tank for the grill or camp stove. If nothing else, if the power goes off you can still heat water for a bath. Most houses are all electric so no hot water.
Katie....so good to hear you are doing so well post-op. Hang in there with the PT...will only get better and you are surely one tough cookie.
Wish I was closer so I could send my supplies over.......propane camp stove and the other things that come in handy. My late husband insisted we get all the things when Charley hit south Florida in 2004. Wouldn't you know the weekend after he had to be hospitalized Francis came through Gainesville, we lost power but did I think ti get the stove, etc out? Nope! Of course I don't think it would matter as I had just been to the store and bought a few items including a half gallon of Bearfoot Brownie ice cream. When we realized there was no power, my daughter and I started eating and well next thing we knew it was empty. Oh were we sick the next day.
Then he passed on a Thursday and Saturday Jeanne came through taking down even more trees...did I think of the stove, etc. Nope. Guess my thinking process was dead too. Do have it out and ready but appears we won't need it so far.
Don't forget your water for eating, drinking in the event the supplies get contaminated. Flashlights, fresh batteries, weather radio and charge cell phone and Nooks/Kindles as you can make contact if need be with those.
I am sure you know all this but just thought I would repeat or refresh. Stay safe both of you!!!!
Dianne - tummy in knots re: Isaac......... not myself
Katie - SO glad to hear from you. Congrats on healing so well and quickly! Glad those *(&_# stitches are out - they would pull something terrible, I know.
I emailed the recruiter, and she promises to call me at 3'ish today, and will email me before the call. She's been in meetings apparently, and also filling urgent assignments for tomorrow. They do more than my type of assignment, so these aren't for me, unfortunately lol
Marion - I can well imagine that the stove and cooking was the last thing on your mind with your late hubby in the hospital (that sounded weird, but y'know what I mean.........).
Those thoughts re: water, etc, are a good reminder, no matter when it's for. We had water off yesterday, from 8am to 6pm, and we're on a "boil water advisory". We have to boil all the tiny screens on our water taps, after the water was turned on. They had a water inspector to check to see if it was safe to drink. Haven't heard yet.
Hello All ;
Katie so glad to hear you made it through... you knew it was going to be a tough recovery but you're a tough gal...
Yes I've lived here 25 years... only hurricane I evacuated from was Andrew and it was because I was a single mom with DS who was 6 months old...so I went to Mom's in Florida... Some folks at the time thought I was evacuating into the storm LOL...
Marion a storm memory for me is being here in BR and the whole family in Florida evacuated to my Aunt's in Havana. The girls even brought their Prom dresses... it was Hurricane Ivan ? Ike? no Ivan.... those hurricanes you mention I can't really remember. Ivan took out the bridges traveling to Florida from here.
THanks for the advice... we have a generator, etc... I could probably fill up the freezer a bit more though..... at least give me something to do...
Debbie how did Nathan do ? Dianne - what is Diesel up to today ? Is Quill still the ALpha dog ?
Look what I found for Betty !

Thanks Marion. We have learned our lessons here. Katrina left us without power for 5 days, Gustav for 11 days. We have 2 generators now. one for the fridge and freezers and the other for the 110 a/c units...grin. at least that keeps the GS from getting cranky and unpleasant as only a bored teen-ager can....grin Plus the full complement for radios, flashlights and lanterns, batteries...oh, and TP GRIN
There was never any doubts in my mind the both of you didn't know what to do. I think it is something that is ingrained in those of us who live in this part of the world.
Mary it was Ivan. It came between Francis and Jeanne, during the time my husband was in Hospice care.....remember as my son works for the National Parks Service and was on the list of people who are sent out to preserve historic spots in such times. He was removed for 6 months due to his dad's illness and death. He did get sent to W.Virginia later when that big storm went though.....21 days working on artifacts and preservation in and around Jamestown. In short, I guess all areas are subjected to Mother Nature.
In the past few years he has spent his summers at Gulf Island off from Pensacola working the artifacts that still need to be catalog and taking care of.
Yup....we all learn quickly don't we?
Interesting...some of the bands of rain kicked up by Isaac are causing serious flooding in Charleston W VA....all the way over on the Atlantic coast....hundreds of miles from here.
what a great job your son has, Marion! Sounds totally interesting!
Nate is home and resting. He did pretty well til we were almost home and the numbness started wearing off. I stopped and got his prescriptions filled and some things he would need. Even got him a little stuffed turtle for his "boo boo" prize.
Jean, it is sometimes hard to believe all the areas that are affected. Who would have thought Charleston. My sister in Arcadia, FL is still have down pours.
I think Isaac may change the way some folks look at hurricanes....maybe it will save some lives.
I've been reading and find it so interesting, scary but interesting..you all seem to take it in your side, know you must but it must be overwhelming to sit and wait wondering if Isaac will do damage to your homes..all the way to Charleston, really is a large front. Don't know how you keep up with all their names...I know I was just outside of Homestead Florida when it was hit many many years ago, believe it was Andrew then..what devastation. Trying to remember if it was a tornado or hurricane..must go check
Melanie is working evenings, Greg has been busy doing more designing of stainless steel projects for the ships now at locks near Sarnia, Kyle is in Wasaga Beach for the night, had power steering repaired early this morning so now has wheels again so Greg will drop in for spaghetti..told him it was my tv bingo night and he can't stay. Lol. Says its just as well seeing he has paperwork which will take him most of the evening
Best I go make sure I don't burn or overcook..be back n a bit..want to respnd to a few threads
Betty, actually we continue on with living and just keep updates. If we let it completely take over our lives we would all be basket cases.....atleast I would. But like anywhere you know what your area is prone to and you learn to go on with life and adjust when necessary.
It was Hurricane Andrew that went through Homestead...August 1992. It is the outer rain band that are affecting Charleston..at one point this storm was 1000 miles across. That isn't the center just the outer bands that are associated with these storms.
Hope you didn't burn your spaghetti. Kim has an Open House tonight so we will be eating later.....very lightly though.
Mary, I am watching that web cam, and so far I have seen a lady take a picture of herself on the web cam, Then she tried to show her boobs, LOL! and then a couple walked across the street, one was wearing a bear head costume, and was carrying a gun! Hope it was not a real gun!
Katie, so glad to hear you are healing so well, you will be home in no time!
Glad to hear Nate is doing good!
LK TOO FUNNY ! We watched for a bit and saw a guy walking around with a life Preserver on.... Only on Bourbon Street :o)
Betty - Hurricane Andrew... 1992.. DS born 3-10-92, and Hurricane Andrew was in August. I drove to Mom's in Florida...
I'll tell you what... I could never put up with the snow storms you all have to deal with up north... I suppose it's a similar experience ?
Debbie - can Nate drink with a straw ? I suppose not... Maybe some ice cream. But I suppose he is recuperating somewhere else.... You were so sweet to bring him...
Betty - did you see the link I posted for you above ?
Mary - guess it's what you're used to, and grew up with....... In Calgary we usually get only enough snow to sweep away, except for 2 weeks in the winter when we get huge snow storms and snow drifts......... blizzards, actually. But then it clears up quickly and we're back to sweeping snow again lol
Moved us over...
