Yewwww smell of skunk just woke me up! Missy is inside and I'm hoping Riley wasn't its target.
Yes, that's an excellent idea and a great place to meet..on my calendar, looking forward to it.
Mary, how does it feel to be home alone?? Lol
Now why would they make you come in for half a day, wouldn't that be taking a chance that you might have to stay there and weather the storm if Isaac is a tad early?
Debbie what did you get up to today, did you get the rain?
Susan, does indeed look like a no win situation.
Now that I'm wide awake let's see if I can fall asleep again
Best/Worse/What did I learn today? Chat with friends..
We had a long day of rain, started around Noon, just a drizzle, but around 4:00 the heavens opened up for two hours straight.
I spent 1 1/2 hours with "the cable guy" trying to get the tv & cable working. Well the volume has shut off again, so it didn't work. He gave me a
set of cables to try if it cut out again, so that will be for DH to do.
Tomorrow I have to take Nate to get his wisdom teeth out in the afternoon. Worried for the kid, and that I am "mom" and he has no one else.
He is living in yet another home (two since here).
OH Geez Debbie ! As if you don't have enough on your plate! Does he really need the wisdom teeth out ? Dentist said Brock DS20 did not need them but last we heard of Nate he was not being very respectful of your place as I recall..
You are a DEAR that is the issue.... taking care of everyone except Debbie...
Yes Betty a 1/2 day... just to torture us... LOL... Just for fun... we are "non-essential" personnel... but they are hoping we sell some hurricane sponsorships....
I boiled some eggs so Hubs can make tuna fish tomorrow... wondering what I could "cook" ... if we have power for just a few hours... that would make sense ... any suggestions? I have plenty of sterno and fondue pot....
DS said Fondue LOL....
We'll see...
HUgs
Mary
Yes, he definitely needs the teeth out. The two bottoms ones are growing crooked and there is no room for the top two. And guess what? His dental insurance end August 31st!!! So definitely need to get this done. His parents just don't care....and it hurts him so much.
I am proud of Nate, YES we did have a few run ins, but he knows he was wrong...told me so. And apologized, and still comes if he needs to talk and make decisions. He is no longer friends with Shane....but he "needs Mom" when he comes over. Gives me money for gas if I take him somewhere....and even bought me lunch.
I know the hurricane is going to be lots of rain and wind....but it is not even hurricane status yet...yes should be over night, but i think it will be much milder than Katrina! AND I am praying I am right! Make sure you have matches, lighters and batteries....so you can maybe light a fire to cook on if the weather clears and no power. We fire up BBQ during these power storms.
Stay safe!!
I can't even begin to imagine what it would be like to be threatened with such storms! I know we get thunderstorms and possible tornadoes, but I would think they are small ones, not of the size and damage capacity that you get down south....... Here we might get some property damage, but loss of life and limb is not the issue and downright scariness it is in your part of the world. Goodness........ I hope it's not a hurricane, Debbie, and that you're safe.......
Poor Nate - good thing it was planned before the 31st! Hope everything goes through for him. Does the dentist bill directly? If so, and it's done before Aug 31st, everything should be fine....... will pray it does.
Debbie, you are earning your place in heaven for sure..mom to so many! He"ll be one hurting boy today, had all my teeth out at about his age, no problem..wasn't more than a few years later that eye and wisdom teeth had to come out, talk about pain..remember the day, the day man first walked on the moon.will he stay at your house for a few days to recoup?
Mary, sell ads during such a time?? Who would buy ads considering much of the are may have no hydro? Will be worried about you travelling. Let's hope you are able to touch base so we know you are safe
Good morning,
Susan, I am in no danger, I am in NY. My family is in south Florida on the west coast (brothers, aunts & uncles, cousins & friends).
Betty, no he is not staying with me. I don't want him around Shane and the family he is staying with is just right down the road and he will
be well cared for. AND he isn't afraid to call me if he does need to come here. It breaks my heart he travels with all his life belongings in a box.
Morning everyone! Sure hope the dentist was easy, and he has good pain meds for a few day!
Betty, your up early!
Dentist for Nate isn't until 2:30....leaving here about 1:15 as its up in Buffalo at surgical center.
How very sad indeed Debbie, to have nothing but the clothes on your back and a few trinkets. You know sometimes these children are the ones who do well in life vs. kids who have everything given to them...you often see that happen! May that be the case in his life..sooo you will have a busy day today
not sure if it's going to be a sunshine day or a rain day
been looking at Isaac updates instead of my forecast..not worried about me, worried about many of you and my beloved NewOrleans
Didn't sleep well LindaKay, 4 nights in a row, living on adrenaline for sure..
2 more work days then home for 4, was thinking on doing a roadtrip to Meaford, always nice at this time of year, get to stop in Collingwood (mountains) lake front (Georgian Bay) and crafts
Must be that big bright moon shining down on us Betty. I didn't sleep well either again. My cleaning lady is here but I see a nap in my future after she leaves.
Is the chip wagon still across from the Hilltop by Timmy's in Meaford Betty?
Diesel is full of the devil this morning. He must have had a good night's sleep! lol.
BBL
Dianne
Must be the moon Dianne..sure makes for long nights, should really have just gotten up, done something for a few hours then back to bed..maybe tonight.
Just talked to Darlene, she has no plans for the weekend so if she's up to it will come for a drive with me..not sure if Ann's family is coming up so maybe we can do a 'widow' outing..doesn't that sound terrible!!!
Will check to see if the chip truck is still there, always on Applefest weekend treat myself to chips from the trucks that park infront of the arena..coming soon isn't it - hmmm weekend before our Thanksgiving??
With all this talk of Meaford it reminds me Noah has been in Meaford all summer and will be coming home on the weekend, maybe I can save Melody the ride and pick him up myself..
Bet Dianne you have many memories of your jaunts to the Applefest. June when she goes always talks to the lady who makes the dolls, think you mentioned her having a booth near you when you were selling.
You really will need a nap to keep up with Diesel..bet you can see growth by the day..he'll be a big dog
sorry Debbie - guess my brain isn't on concentrating right now, with yesterday's "day from who-knows-where"....... anyway, I hope your family is safe. Must be a worry when you're so far from them.......
Dianne - I imagine Diesel's getting big fast, eh? They grow so fast at that age!
I'm waiting for a call from the agency to chat with her about my last contract assignment. Ended badly, and I'm not sure why. Seems like a domino effect, and as the boss was away yesterday, there wasn't anyone to diffuse the manager from calling HR and saying I wasn't to come back/not needed anymore....... siiiiiiiigh
Well, it gives me time to do some house cleaning and quilting! Always a bright side to things in my life, right?!?!
lol cross-posted - yes, Diesel IS getting big - quite the arm/lapful!!
OMG Dianne, look at the size of that fellow..he won't be sitting on your lap for much longer and if he does, ouchhhh!
Susan, hope you get some answers this morning.
There is no real comparison between Katrina and Isaac, With Katrina, it was sheer strength of winds that drove a massive storm surge on shore. Isaac is a plodding wet storm. It is very slow moving, so it drops lots of rain in a very short time. The biggest danger is the possibility of 20 inches or more of rain coming down in just a few hours. The pumps and drains can't handle that kind of water and you get wide spread flooding....add to that 6 to 10 feet of storm surge water coming ashore and you have a real mess. Then if the wind increases, even to 80-90 MPH (category 2), you have trees coming down because the ground is saturated and can't hold the roots. In 2001, H.Allison came plodding through...20 inches of rain over a 24-36 hour period. Our subdivision was an actual island....the water in the creek rose up 6 feet over the bridge. We were AT HOME...for 4 days before the water subsided. Storm-wise, our area sustained much greater damage during H Gustave than H Katrina.
The picture below shows Muddy Creek (to the front) over-flowing into the neighbors pond (behind) That was after a really heavy rain a few months ago. The second pic shows the run of the Creek...during Allison, you could not see any green all the way back into the trees...the bridge is about 8 feet over the creek and the water was 6 feet over the bridge.
OMG!!! I'll be keeping all of you in my prayers that's for sure...... Stay safe...
Keep coming back to check on you southern gals..I'll second Barb's OMG..can only hope things change in the next few hours..would hate to see such devastation hit your neckof the woods
Jean, as always thanks for the explanation, always helps one understand! What beautiful grounds even with the water
Well it is very quiet here in the panhandle where I am located. No rain, light breeze but eery overcast. Beginning to look like we have avoided the heavy rains.....maybe. Just spoke with my sister in the Arcadia area and she is have very heavy rains for the past half an hour.
Wishing all the best for those in the areas west of me!!! The barometer pressure is down to 978 so that within itself isn't good......sounds like it is winding up again.
Glad you checked in Marion, you have know idea how we really are concerned for all your well being. Will your mom be fretting? let's hope the eerieness is the aftermath of the storm moving out of your region
Just checking in on everyone to the south. Sending positive thoughts the storm will not pick up as predicted.
Diesel was just 'helping' me clean some outside windows. He helped himself to a roll of paper towel. Imagine a few weeks ago the roll of towel was bigger than him. As you can see that is not the case now. Thanks Debbie for sharing Diesel here.
Found some gypsy moth as I was cleaning the siding. *SIGH* I sure hope we are not in for another major infestation of them this spring.
Neeed to give poor Quill a break from Diesel, will bbl to check on you all.
Dianne
Thanks for caring. Yes, in short, Mom will be fretting. That is what Mom does! We are lucky in that there is atleast one nurse on each sift we have gotten to know very well. My sister and I have been calling during those times to ask a message be given to Mom that we both are okay. Sue is having to call in today as it is raining so hard she doesn't want to drive in town until it slacks up some. She called but Mom will worry. That is just Mom.
Still a little windy but still looks like the heavens could open up any time.
Latest advisory says the pressure is now down to 876 and it is moving at 10 mph but winds still below hurricane force. Still is bad as it is such a huge water maker for the low areas it is approaching. Take care all!!! PLEASE.
I was thinking the same thing Betty, just beautiful, so bad it had to be ugly to get it that way!
A lady I sold mushrooms and trough to the other day stopped with her mother this morning after being out for breakfast. She wanted to show her mom the garden and order another set of mushrooms. Her mother bought a trough while she was here. Always nice to get a little spending money....
I ordered the tickets for dinner theatre for Sat. night for Nana and Granddaughters night out. They're showing "Seussical" this year. Guess it's a musical about Dr. Seuss. Should be fun. Had buy one get one with Entertainment card and still cost me $138 for 4 people. Oh well, once a year, and we're making memories.
LK, are you driving up to Mich, or are you flying to your sisters? Just wondering.....
Have a Rotary luncheon at noon today at Olive Garden. The Rotary club I belonged to disbanded but there are still several of us that meet for lunch once a month. Always fun to catch up with them.
Talked to my brother that lives in Cape Coral and he said they didn't get anything from Isaac. He was golfing when I called him this morning. He has those hurricane shutters that he just has to push a button and they go up or down. He did have his boat dock cover removed though, just in case. Now they'll come back and put it up again. Hope the rest of you get by with as little as they got.
Gotta run...
I know your Mom will fret, Marion, cuz it's what Moms DO, but let's hope Sue calling in regularly allays her fears somewhat. Good that there are nurses you can talk to about this........
For those in the wake of Isaac, and those with friends and family in same - I will pray for peace of mind, and safety.......
Sometimes God quiets the storm, and sometimes God leaves the storm alone and calms His child..............
Joyce - so glad that Isaac passed your brother by........ hurricane shutters, eh? sounds like a good idea!
That low barometric pressure is well worth watching...that spawns tornadoes.....and does not bode well for folks on the North and Eastern side of the storm. You also have a seriously low pressure area colliding with a high pressure are...the results can be very nasty. The first bands of clouds are starting to move in here, imagine the wind will start to pick up a bit before long....correct that...the winds are starting to pick up...18 MPH sustained and gusts at 20-25 mph...they say 40 to 60 MPH by tonight/tomorrow. Gonna be interesting times for everyone from the tip of the Fla panhandle all the way over to the central LA coast...Looks like Crissy will be getting a lot of rain over the next week as Isaac moves over land. Latest track shows Isaac moving over most of LA and up into Arkansas then wending back toward the East with lots of rain.
Thanks for this, Jean - it sure helps me to know what my friends in that area are going through.........
Well, it's off to do some borders on the Quilt Round Robin I'm hosting......... busy busy busy lol
Joyce..must get you to make a set of the taller mushrooms for me (will give you Bonner's spending $$$) lol Maybe you should advertise and put sign at roadfront..
The friends I met at the Elvis Festival e-mailed me yesterday, their trip to Cincinnati on thanksgiving weekend just got cancelled, not enough for the bus to run..she said she might just drive down anyway, they are in London Ontario so about 3 hrs closer to you than I..they were going to Trader's World (Huge Flea market) is that where we went to walk, the big grocery store area???
glad we are getting updates from you all but won't take a sigh of relief until the storm has completely passed you by. Jean, you are a wealth of information..thank you/thank you
You are welcome....share what ya know...grin
Isaac has officially become a Cat 1 hurricane and is still about 100 miles off shore....may be a little more interesting now that it is a full fledged hurricane...folks will start taking it more seriously.
THAT is not good news..does hurricane mean more wind than rain, that would be better in some ways would it not?
No, hurricane means stronger winds and the possibility of stronger storm surge and the possibility of more tornadoes to the east side of the storm. It is the combination of those things that makes things dangerous. Stronger winds mean more damage to homes, trees and power lines...stronger storm surge means more water pushed ahead of the storm onto coastal land...and tornadoes...well, we all know what they mean, but the increased danger is that the wind and rain tend to make the tornadoes harder to see so there is less warning time.
Sick feeling in my tummy Jean...are you close to the water?
Everyone please take cover, and move to a safer place if you can!
Joyce, I am flying to Michigan, I will be at my Sisters place for two weeks, while they drive to Arizona to see family there. I will be driving with Judy and my Dad to Frankenmuth.
Susan, any word about your job yet?
I'm with Betty - sick feeling in my tummy........... this is so scary.......
No LK - haven't heard anything from my recruiter. I was to get a call from her at 8, 9, then 10 am - she's in meetings, and promised to call after each one.......or at beginning of the day.
Did she happen to mention the beginning of what day Susan? I'm sorry I know this is no laughing matter it just reminded me of something that happened with Bell Canada when we were moving into this house in 2001. No wonder your tummy is in knots.
LK does Texas expect to get hit hard - or is it just in some areas?
You know one of the things I like about DG the most is how much I learn each day and not necessarily about gardening. It is like opening the encloypedia(sp?) to any page and reading about new things. I love it!
Going to try a nap. My eyes are hard to keep open but what do you want to bet as soon as I lay down they will pop open like a hoot owl's.
Texas may get some rains and a bit of wind, but not like New Orleans is going to get. I sure pray it slows down, and the damage is minimal!
Well the winds drop for sure but if it slows LK, it just gives it more time to intensify and more threat of higher winds and tornadoes....can't win for losing right now. Trouble being it is over very warm waters right now.
Amen to that, Marion. If anything we would rather Isaac get his hind end in gear and move on through. The longer it takes, the greater chance for the storm to get worse and build in strength. That is what Katrina did...she played around the Gulf and Fla for so long she went from a Cat 2-3 storm to a Cat 5 monster.
Betty, Mary and I live in an area that is well back from the coast..60+ miles or so, but we are bordered about 15 miles to the west by the Mississippi River, to the south about 20 miles by Lake Maurepas and have numerous rivers and bayous to the north and east of us, like the Amite, Comite and Tangipahoa, Bayou Manchac, Muddy Creek, Henderson Bayou...and the list goes on. I think Mary is in pretty close proximity to the Amite River at her house. We also have the Diversion Canal...but if the water backs in from the coast and flows out from the rivers, we get high water on land in some areas.
