Thanks everyone. JMs would be too nice, really not a spot that would be seen. I'll check out the viburnum.
Shopping spree #12
ordered some allium from Breck's in mid-july - cancelled the order today after getting a couple catalogs and an email offer - had to do the math on 75% off verse $25 discount and then compare against Brecks wholesale pricing. Pain in the butt - cust service there said the same thing. Ended up ordering from wholesale for Beau Regards, and 3 others with the 75% off - should have learned my lesson this spring, will not open another Breck's catalog this fall :)
Didn't know Brecks had wholesale pricing
sounds like they bought another company out of MN

Looking at a few catalogs, but haven't ordered anything yet.....Oh, yes, I ordered some lilies from B & D.....
I ordered these in June. ^_^
Dutch Iris Bulbs Oriental Beauty (Bag of 15)
Dutch Iris Bulbs Eye of the Tiger (Bag of 15)
Dutch Iris Bulbs Yellow Queen (Bag of 20)
They are beauties....I lost my Dutch iris this year...no snow cover!
Wow, Jen...love that hibiscus! Yes, Dutch iris are marginally hardy for me...I should have mulched, but I didn't!
Just back from a trip to MA. Horrible traffic on the way back into Maine--leaving Maine during the summer is never a good idea, as it is really tedious to get back in. Anyway, purpose of the trip was a rocks/minerals show in Springfield (who would ever have guessed that is another of my hobbies?) and on the way home, I went to New England Bonsai in Bellingham. I have ordered supplies from them but never been there in person. I got a sweet Acer palmatum Katsura bonsai, young but well-proportioned, I thought. Also, two bags of fine pine bark, which is a major and very-hard-to-find ingredient in Al's (Tapla here at Dave's Garden) home-made potting soil, which I like for JM's because the drainage is so excellent with his mix (see his posts on Container Gardening forum if interested). Best of all, came home to see the rain gauge tell me we got two inches!
very nice!!
Pretty JM....
Very nice!
really nice - i've been to NE Bonsia, almost got a granite lantern there.
Am I the only one still shopping?
This weekend we went camping and I stopped in my favorite nursery in Belfast, ME. Got Corydalis 'Blue Heron'. I hadn't heard of blue-flowered Corydalis before. The tag says zone 6, which won't work for me, but the nursery owner said zone 5. I was willing to gamble to get that blue. Anyone have experience with this?
I also got a Chamaecyparis pisifera (pictured) that the owner, who does a lot of plant propagation, had obtained from cuttings taken from Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Boulevard' that exhibited a fan shape as opposed to the normal curly shape. She tentatively called it 'Blue Fan' although I gather has not registered it yet (or whatever it is one does to name a cultivar). I just liked how it looked and didn't care whether it is official. Of course, it may revert to the species, we'll see.
that is a pretty cool cham. granite.
Not currently shopping for plants, 1 shopping spree at a time
2 weeks ago it was for my daughter's b-day then last week had to concentrate on finishing back to school shopping now the next 2 weeks I'm making baskets for a women's retreat on going on, so purchasing stuff for that, I had an idea for the basket or container itself but didn't find anything that fit my idea yesterday when I went out
Going to Rochester NY soon...lots of nurseries there, so I'll buy something! Have not tried the blue corydalis....I have the pink & yellow & it spreads everywhere! Easy to pull out though.....
Have fun!!!
Thanks, Jan.....
yep looks like we have to enjoy your buys GG... I am on Halloween already.. LOL
Here's an easy way to spend some money! Bannister Gardens is selling their peonies at half price this year! So I took the plunge and bought Garden Treasure and Prairie Charm --normally very expensive ITOHs, Fantastic, and some favorites to fill in the peony gardens. Festiva Maxima peony was priced $7.50 per root section. It is easier to shop than to weed :)

Very pretty peonies!
I really love it that herbacious peonies can just die back during this hot weather and I don't have to water them if I am not trying to raise a bumper crop. The ITOH peonies have the best qualities of the herbacious and the tree peonies in my opinion. The two new ones will go by the road.
Though I love tree peonies, I find them hard to get started from an expensive, tiny root. I think Cliffie my dog digs them up, but I'd still rather love my dog than have a peony from the lost monastery.
LOL.....I wasn't happy when Robs dug up my Lithuanian Blues hepatica....I couldn't replace it, & I called him a few names...but now that's he gone, I'd rather have him back than the plant...know what you mean.....& Cliffie will fill the space that the triplets will leave....
Thanks, for the kind words, Robin. Cliffie is going to go on some weekend trips with us in fall for sure.
Placed a Santa Rosa order, it's the last few days of 25% off

Yippee!!!
lots of color this spring celeste.
i picked up a lakeside shoremaster hosta and a small suncrest norway spruce this weekend.
Nice.....my hostas are hanging in despite the drought....
Celeste, I can't imagine trying to plant that many bulbs, but the results should be awesome.
I attended the American conifer society meeting in Boston this weekend, and had a great time visiting gardens and drooling over plants. There are some serious conifer lovers in that group, and they bid pretty high at the auction of donated plants. So I wasn't very successful with the auction, but at the "tailgate" show afterwards I picked up some treasures and made a dent in my wallet. I also visited Harlequin Rare Trees nursery south of Boston. I put pictures of the conifers I bought on the trees forum ( http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1280742/ )
I've only planted one so far, Abies veitchii, and it was going into an existing garden so I had to dig carefully. I encountered a rock that seemed about a foot across. Getting it out just wasn't going to happen, so I dug around it, planted the tree next to it, and hoped for the best. Picture shows it in the new space, on the far left next to the stairs. It is quite slow growing so in theory it won't outgrow the space, and if it were inclined to, the rock will surely give it pause!
Cool, GG!!!
Nice dwarf plantings!
Very nice !
