Celeste, I can't imagine trying to plant that many bulbs, but the results should be awesome.

I attended the American conifer society meeting in Boston this weekend, and had a great time visiting gardens and drooling over plants. There are some serious conifer lovers in that group, and they bid pretty high at the auction of donated plants. So I wasn't very successful with the auction, but at the "tailgate" show afterwards I picked up some treasures and made a dent in my wallet. I also visited Harlequin Rare Trees nursery south of Boston. I put pictures of the conifers I bought on the trees forum ( http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1280742/ )

I've only planted one so far, Abies veitchii, and it was going into an existing garden so I had to dig carefully. I encountered a rock that seemed about a foot across. Getting it out just wasn't going to happen, so I dug around it, planted the tree next to it, and hoped for the best. Picture shows it in the new space, on the far left next to the stairs. It is quite slow growing so in theory it won't outgrow the space, and if it were inclined to, the rock will surely give it pause!
