Faye, I have a cassies curls fat stick cutting I am rooting, do you have that one?

Thumbnail by joeswife
(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

LindaKay, how about you? It is from Bonnie's Original plant. I also have two 1ft tall Flamenco rooting, and a Cotton Candy. Now is when I am cutting and bagging root balls to winter store for the plants that are not doing much right now..

Thumbnail by joeswife
Henderson, NC(Zone 7b)

Debra thank you, I have none of those mentioned.
Copy: Now is when I am cutting and bagging root balls to winter store for the plants that are not doing much right now.. Debra, please explain exactly what you are doing and why. I may need to try that too. None of my Angels had a chance this year.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Faye, I have several small plants from cuttings that started out well, but the heat just stinted them. So, I cut the top off in pieces leaving a top with a Y for my tree form, but short, and then a chunk about 6 inches long, marked , rooting hormone, in water bubbler, and another chunk about 6 inches long same thing, leaving me with a tagged bottom about 9 inches tall and about an inch and a half wide, with a root ball. It stays in the ground until October or 40 degrees which ever comes first, I uproot it and dump it in a large plastic tub along with the other root balls, tagged and de-bugged and clean potting material in the tub. they say there all winter in that tub, in the dark, until about february, I bring them out to the light a bit and they start growing. the tub has small holes for drainage, but I hardly water them at that time. It saves a plant I love, and room for my trees I am not cutting down, and other plants in the grow rooms. The back room in the basement does get a ray of sunlight for about three hours, it sits near the water heater so it stays warm thru the coldest times. it beats lugging in tons of heavy pots up and down the stairs. Son and Joe have already moved Maya, Flamenco, Peach versi and cherub x berkonigon for me. My serendipity is already down there, in a hanging basket where it rooted from the time you sent it to me. I have two cuttings of the long pendulas pink from Bonnie rooted this way, and the bottom of it is 8 ft tall, it will hang out in its pot until spring, and will be moved to a bigger pot.
see this frosty? notice the cut point just to the right of the blo0m hanging.. and all those off shoorts? they were all removed, as was the top stump, and rooted to make new plants for sending last year.

Debra, sure wish I had the room to try and save the plants. I took all kinds of cuttings last year, most of them did not make it, and those that did, have not made it through this HOT summer! The few brugs I have growing are only about 3 foot tall, hardly any leaves, and no signs of any buds. I had more than 60 brugs last year, and this year I have 8!

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

I am considering myself very lucky this year. My old brugs look good and all have buds or have bloomed. Antique lace is a brug that Bonnie gave me and it had buds but dropped them due to the heat. Will it try again? Even the newest one I purchased had buds, bloomed and then they burnt up but the tree looks fine. In fact most things except for my huge banana tree looks pretty good.

We are in for some really cooler weather 70's high - 50's low, think I will start hauling things in this weekend. I have a few things that do not like cooler weather at all.... Need to apply Bayer to everything so the bugs in the soil don't last. Sides being this cool worries me.... It was hot and humid yesterday so didn't do much knowing it was cooling down today.

DH and I went to an antique shop in town and bought a small dry sink to put at the end of my kitchen. It looks so cute there, it is perfect size like it was made for that very spot, didn't have much room but had this small blank wall right before a door, course made of real wood not partical board. I would take a pic but the camera is dead and I forget to recharge it since it has to plug into the computer.

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

RECHARGE WANT to see :)))) Ok we didn't get done what was planned for my nephew was a NO SHOW as usuall but Jim & I did get My North window in :)

Oh Suzie that is coming along so nicely! You are going to be so happy this winter, you will wish you had done it sooner. It is such a nice break to go to the garden room when it is cold and snowy and just pidal....

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

I agree, that is really nice!

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

I spent the majority of the day pitalling in the gardening room getting ready to move things in. I bought my Mom and treadmill and trying to find someplace to use it, since it is at my house now....it takes up more room than I thought. I need to excerside this winter and not be such a slug.

We are suppose to dip below te 50's tonight, I am going to have some unhappy tropicals but I am not ready to bring them in.

Henderson, NC(Zone 7b)

Thank you Debra. I don't have a dark cold place anywhere.
Hello everyone, I don't know if I'll have many cuttings this year, certainly won't be like this pic. of last year's cuttings.

Susie, Cassies Curls is a Named Brug from Bonnie who grows a lot of named brugs. DEBRA : You sent me a few last fall but the only one that made it was Cupids Blush but its not setting buds yet So if you have any to share once again I would love to try them again . think i can do better this winter with them & will have a better home for them this winter :)

welll brother will be here soon & hope we can get much more done today it is cooler so i'm sure we can .
Faye I Hope to have cuttings to share if you need :) well got to go move my car . have a great day .

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Debra, I can try to help winter over any brugs if you want me to. Course no promises everything will make it. I lost quite a few last winter with all that was going on with my Mom.

It is plum cold here, down into the 40's, I was bringing in tropicals last night at midnight, rest of the week lows in the 50's, so gonna have to start loading the garden room, weather guy said this was oct. weather, I have said all summer we have been 30 days off on the temps and Sept is looking like Oct. hope Oct is like Oct and not Nov.....ughhh!

Susie you go girl, that is going to be so nice.

Well lots to do, plant, clean, haul things in the garden room.....that time of year again, rather I am ready or not...rofl.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Hi all, will get as many ready to send out as possible. been at it all day... need to go to Paula's ( my sis in law #1) and hang with her for a while tonight, was going to go visit Don and Patty, but looks like after work one night will be the time, he said he just got her home from a heart attack, and he is bringing in his stuff in October.. Will be getting FAYES BOX READY TONIGHT, so hope you are home this week, Faye.
the only plant I brought in last night was the desert rose. Everything Else was fine this am outside.
Linda, will get your box and my swap buddy's box done in another thread tonight as well.. since Joe is gone, I can play all night , sleep for 5 hours, and work 9 hours and play the rest of tommorrow night... ( football, ugh)

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

I have been planting and tagging, problem I have to keep digging a flower bed to plant this stuff, I have plants ready for a swap, plants ready for the plant sale next year, and plants waiting on me. It was a beautiful day and now I have a mess! ughhh! and still need to water.

I didn't bring in desert rose, forgot that one but so far looks ok, in fact it is blooming up a storm. I brought in the newest plumerias, buddah buddy, and voodoo lily, and my tropical starts, I may drag something in a day until I get really worried.

Debra, my Texas Star is beautiful and in a pot, I am thinking I am going to grow it as a tropical, I am afraid in zone 5 it won't survivie. What do you think of that idea? I over winter some of my pond plants and thought I would stick it in with those.

Well better go clean up my mess.
whoa, if DH was gone you wouldn't be able to beat me off the property, I don't know why it is different if he is gone and I am home alone but it just is...rofl, course now he is retired that never happens any more. Use to love those little short trips, never cared for the ones that lasted a week, that got a little too long.

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

Well Weather guy said it is to get down to 40 here this evening so JIM Helpped me Load the New PLANT HOUSE UP :))) Only had one cornor for them so they won't be in our way to finish putting up the walls :) & To Finish the ceiling Our joints are not as young as our mines so hard on the lifting :) we finished off the NORTH Wall 1/2 of the East wall & Wala all in one Cornor & Still lots of room for now anyway :) hehe

This is going to be wonderful well guess i better go get dishes done & chat with daddy before his bed time . I spend most of my time out side so he is alone in the house most the day but he calls me on my cell when he needs me :) about every hr :)

back later

Susie it looks great and everything looks happy! I know what you are doing is just temporary but be sure and not sit the pots on the concrete this winter because the pots will suck up the cold, learned that the hard way in my garden room the first year, now everything sits ontop of something even if it is a flattened cardboard box.

Wish I had more stuff in, just heard it is going to get alot colder tonight. Sure hope the ee's are ok tonight, dang I wish I would of brought more stuff in. I am just too tired to do it. I think I will go get a few more things before bed.....dang I hate this.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

well, so far every thing looks okay here, I managed to get my pj swap buddy's box done, Tammys watertaro packaged, and part of Fayes box done, so hopefully can get hers finished after work tonight, and work on Linda Kay's and another trade partners box tonight as well. lows getting warmer the rest of the week. If I had time I would share a wonderful funny adventure I had with Colllge girl here, but have to get ready for work. My lave moon vine is in full bloom right now, it is a huge vine, and hope I can get seeds.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Morning everyone!

Can't wait to hear that story Debra.

No hurry with my box, just when ever you get to it!

Love that color in the four o clock!

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

That is a beautiful 4 oclock Debra, wowzer. OK what have you and College girl been up to now? rofl. I can't even imagine. Was reading up on my Texas Star hibiscus you sent me....rofl. They said not to be alarmed about the shape of the leaves but there have been law enforcement officers misunderstand what the plant was, I about fell over laughing I didn't even notice that until I started reading about it.

We got down to 45 last night, hope nothing got hurt. I have set a goal for every night, cause I see an early frost in my future and I am not going to be caught off guard...rofl. yeah right. Every year no matter how early I start I end up running around like a crazy person...

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

They do look like an illegal plant! Make sure you don't dry it and smoke it! LOL!

I hope you can get some seeds too Debra. Mine is big, but not blooming I think because it is so wrapped around in the white moonvines. I over achieved in those pots big time this year. Learned my lesson and won't plant so many vines on one pot. Right now the 2 trellises at the end of the sidewalk look a lot like Cousin It. LOL!

Susie your gardens are beautiful.. I bet u and I would get along just fine..

my four o clocks always get so tall, over 5 to 6 ft sometimes. Last year my itty bitty balsum grew to a huge bush. I have a lot of different four o clocks this year, not many seeds atm, but that will change. had to cut down most of them when it got so hot as they would fall over.
Faye need to know what colors you have already, I just dug up white, salmon and pink from the south bed front side. Also have a white Texas star I am sticking in your box, it over wintered as a little stick, and came back as it grew closer to spring inside, and grew like crazy, then the heat did it in.
I saved the root ball and a stem, it is re-leafing. also found a volunteer passion vine with root, so I cut it off and dug it up, and stuck some other vines in the plastic water bottle, when you get that, sit it in a deep container so that the opening end that is capped, ( un capped of course) can drain thru the winter.. u all know I am a winter water bottle seed grower and my window sills all over the house get filled with water bottle "green houses" LOL Poor Joe.
Normally while digging and cleaning fflower beds, I let these things go, as they eat the crickets, however, since college girl showed me a video of one of these sacks hatching, I decided to kill it and boy, was it a fighter..

Thumbnail by joeswife
(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Patti, I coulda swore I saw a want list with a hardy cactus on your list, I accidentally broke a prickly pear off with two "ears" do u want it?
Joyce, I bring in something every night, at least The least hardiest of them, I look up their hardiness by zone and go from there, I like to bring things in at night as it is same out as it is inside, so I don't lose leaves from temp shock. Like you, I feel an early frost coming. sister called me and said she has a migrating flock of four different finches in three of her trees and she is digging it, I wanted to know what kind of trees those were as they are cool little canopy trees, but they were raiing some kind of "stuff" , and that is what the finches were eating.

I got 4 ROS, and three Crape myrtles. One caripoptus thing, that is a lime green varigated shrub. Need to get them in the ground asap.
Faye, this is what your vine is.. ( that is coming to you)

Thumbnail by joeswife
(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Debra, I am so glad you killed that ugly thing! YUCK!!!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

So, Sunday afternoon, I decided to get short step ladder out of the garage ( manual and hard to open) so I could re do the vine tub out front which grows up the brick wall and lattice.. so, the garage door was opened.. I needed something from inside the house, so went thru the garage entry to the house, went back out and finished that project, and decided to trip the honey suckle and red trailing rose corner up ( front porch south end) , got that done, then noticed the twomaple trees ahd suckers that needed to come off, so got the long handled tree cutter thingy down and commenced to snipping and cutting and all, ( bout got conked on the head by falling limbs a couple times) , then I was hot and tired and needed a break, so came inside and sat down at putor to check in here, saw about five flies buzzing and thought crap! I left the garage door open to the house, so went around spraying fly spray everywhere, after I shut the stoopid door, even down stairs there were flies everywhere, so I sprayed down there. Then the smell was so strong I had to go back outside to find more things to do, so I decided to inventory what needed to come inside from the front...
well, I got distraacted by this project, but was glad to finally get it done, I had been dreaming of it all year.. this is the messina creeper ( i.. carica) morning glory. it is back outside, hope to have it convered by end of summer.. they call this mile a minute vine.

Thumbnail by joeswife
(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

well, I kept looking at hte tree limbs every where, and decided I wanted to trim the stickery bushes out front, and was going to throw out all that stuff, but a light bulb cameon and I thought, okay I will spread all these thorny bush limbs piece by piece all over the fence line out back, and in all the pots and around the pear tree where the squirrells and rabbits come and go, and also block the places I keep seeing mia the crossed eyed siamese cat from next door hop over the fence, felt really good that got done, decided to clean my messes with limbs up, checked the branch cuttings of the ROS I had to cut down for the brick work a couple weeks ago, and well, by the end of the day, and after eating and watching a Criminal minds episode with college girl who had cooked a wonderful meal for me,I went down stairs to pot up alot of the stuff I had dug up, and as i walked past the old brown sectional couch, I saw what looked like a pile of s*&t there. Instantly P*ss*d, I hollered at College girl to come down here and bring a bat or something that someone was in the house. All the hairs on my neck were up and I was scared to death. ( the garage door hasd been open for a few hours, remember? ) Well she comes down, with out a bat, without anything! She askes me what is the reason for my craziness. Hmmpf! I pointed to the pile of crap on the couch and reminded her that we do not have any pets, and that I thought someone had come in and did that and was hiding out to get us.. She laffed at me .. but humored me, by starting to yell.. comeout comeout we know u r here crazy serial killer dude..
putting in picsa of what I am sending out as I tell my story..
