Spending spree #7

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

oooh, that sounds like a fun trip to me. Good job, Bill!

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

I finally planted an 'Accolade ' flowering cherry in front of an aging native cherry, shown here. I also planted an 'Alee' elm, 'Northern Belle' magnolia virginiana, and a 'Rubin' witchhazel. l bought these and several other varietes of trees and shrubs, including Golden Shadows, Wolf eyes and two hardy southern magnolias from Forest Farm in early spring. They have grown on my deck for several months. My dog Clifford supervised the digging. I still have a number of azaleas, hydrangeas (from Bluestone), fragrant snowbell, and a 'Flava' cornus mas, among other plants, still on the deck. Wish me luck getting it all in!

Bill, I really like Spilt Milk....good haul. Rosemary, you have some wonderful plants...hope they get planted. Clifford looks like he can help dig the holes!

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Robindog. Making beds and planting all the stuff I bought through the winter has been an ongoing project, but Clifford lends moral support. I've told him not to check my work later and he agrees..

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

Wow I love it when folks are busy planting TREES..... and your supervisor Glifford looks like he had the knowledge for that line of work... By the way, what breed is he?

Jan

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Jan, Clifford is a labradoodle. His parents must have been HUGE though we don't know because we got him already grown. He's also a first generation cross. Cliffie can be persuaded to dig for a few minutes until a squirrel comes by. He just looks at me when I ask him to steady the sapling. He is my gardening companion and he treats the thicket of pots on our deck as his cover for hunting prey. I've posted a little on the pets forum sometimes.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I love flowering Cherry trees!!! Clifford is handsome. :)

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

you may be on to something victor - i did not mention the 25 or so liners a ordered from a coop

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Wha, nice trip for you up to Mason's. My liners from that coop are doing very well. He was a very good vendor for me. How are yours?

RosemaryK, Clifford is a wonderful looking helper. Lots of watering will be in order for all your new trees. Nice list. I am still neeeeeeeeeeeding a Magnolia.

Still tweaking my a final (not really) fall bulb order, but trying to curb my plant buying until fall sales. Patti

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

patti the liners are doing well for me too - most are potted up in some grow mix polly recommended - this is my third time ordering a large number of liners - by the way the jap. iris's also came from polly i think they must have been the extra's - another white one just bloomed.

I miss Polly's posts!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

me too.. glad we still chat now & then at the other place

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

Well I never would have guessed that cross, I was thinking he looked more like a wolf hound....LOL at any rate he sure is a handsome fella.

Here's a photo of the wolfhound I had 25 year ago.... ...Nora was 125 pounds.

Beauty!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Robindog - Nora was a beautiful dog, and that photo with her gorgeous white coat in front of those pretty pink blooms is a winner! How tall was Nora?

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Nora is so pretty!!

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Great picture of gorgeous Nora! Cliffie would like to be like that but people only THINK he's a Wolfie. We get that question a lot.

Patti, what kind of magnolia are you looking for? I have been wishing for a miniature sieboldii but I only find cultivars with names like "Colossus." I do admire the plants on the Rarefind Nursery list. We treasure our magnolia "Betty" in spite of the wait until it settled enough to give us a show. I have also corresponded with northern gardeners who are grandiflora enthusiasts. Here's one of my baby Brackens BB. I'm too cheap to pay a lot and possibly have it croak. This one may have to overwinter in a makeshift greenhouse.

I think I want a precocious yellow blossom one that is small. Someday. Patti

Louise, when Nora stood on her hind legs, she was as tall as Doug ....6'. Nothing EVER left on the countertops....we learned quickly...LOL. But over all, she was a very obedient, loyal girl....and probably the smartest. And both of us had had dogs all our lives....of course, 6 were airedales, so that's not a very good ruler!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I got one 2 years ago, a lovely yellow that blooms late so no chance of frost. :)

Wow, 6 feet tall! That does require some evasion thinking! She sounds like a special girl.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Bill, I have 2 of the hostas you recently got, montana aureomarginata and LS Cha Cha, and I love both.

Rosemary, sounds like you got some nice stuff planted. Good for you! My dogs like to supervise, too, in between critter searches. Most labradoodles I've seen have had the curly coat like a poodle and have been more on the off white coloring side.

Nora was a real beauty, Marilyn.

Have not bought anything lately except hose menders and Bayer for roses and to treat botritis fungal disease on my Asiatic lilies. Will be going the Harmon Hill Farm the morning of Louise's RU to pick up a daylily, first intro by Carl Harmon called Car's Folley, and will look around and maybe buy a few more. Looking forward to that and the RU.

Thomaston, CT

Thanks, girls....is that nursery close to Louise's home, Karen?

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

Oh my what a beauty for sure and a great shot of her in front of flowers.

Jan

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Marilyn, Harmon Hill Farm is in Hudson NH, about an hour from Louise's, east, near the MA border. It's near Nashua. It will take 1.75 hrs to drive there from here, so I plan to leave here around 6:30 to arrive there by 8:15/8:30 or thereabouts. I'm factoring in pee stops. That will give me about 1.5 hrs to look around and chat with the owners before heading to Louise's.

Karen

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Oops! I wrote that wrong. It's just over 1.5 hrs to Louise's from Harmon Hill Farm.

American Meadows bulb sale is 50% off. I think this is the last week. I checked Scheepers, and AM is cheaper, at least during the sale.

Pam

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

So glad you shared that, I hadn't place my Scheepers order yet

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Never ordered from AM. Good??

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

I got a few lilies and perennials from them this spring. They arrived on time, the packing was good, the plants were small but fine, and the bulbs were a good size. All are growing well. Since then I've gotten bigger plants elsewhere, but plan to order bulbs from them soon...I've been honing my list. Hard to beat 50% if they have what you want...
