Spending spree #7

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

EEk, found it, Jen! There are some really good co-ops there. Make room for some new heucheras and tiarellas! :)

South Hamilton, MA

Ginger needs heavy shade, not just a little. a friend gave us a plant about 10 yrs ago & it is doing fine.

Thomaston, CT

I had mine on the north side of the house, Lucy, but maybe it was too dry for it.....

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I had mine in a good amount of shade. Don't know why it didn't like that spot.

Wow - that's a beauty.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I KNOW!!!!!!!!! That's why I had to have it.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

:)

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Nice one Jen!! Did you take a piece of the dark DL I brought to the RU? Would go nicely with it!!!

South Hamilton, MA

very interesting DL pattern.

Thomaston, CT

That's a beauty! My 3 heucheras from Garden Crossings came yesterday, & they are wonderful......

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Celeste did you have it labelled? I don't think I got any of that.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Nope, just brought a huge clump ....Bill had to get a knife to chop it up. I dug it up an hour before we left because it was in full bloom.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Jen, that DL is gorgeous! That will be a nice addition to your gardens. I must have missed seeing your purple NOID daylily at the RU. I don't remember seeing it, anyhow. You'd think I would notice something like that, unless it was gone before I got a chance to check it out.

Not to worry...I have 2 more clumps of this tall dark beauty. :)

Celeste, you called it "Wayside Royale" on the plant swap thread - unless I misread your post and you were referring to another one with that name... Entirely possible! :)

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Nope you are correct...it is 'Wayside King Royale'. I may have forgot the"King" part.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Your welcome.....im just a little spacey lately. Sorry, lot on my mind.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

My first indulgence for fall bulbs....B & D Lily sent me the new book that had a 10% off code on the back cover.
I was really good up until that point, I really didn't do much damage. :)

2~ 'Gizmo' - Easter x Oriental Hybrid Lily Bulb
1~ 'Graffity' - Asiatic Hybrid Lily Bulb
3~ 'Fujian' - Orienpet Hybrid Lily Bulb

Thomaston, CT

I got the catalog also.....am still looking at it, trying to decide if I need to spend more $.....

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

I've been wondering about B&D lily and somehow managed to put it in the trash and delete the emails (only because I'm still planting tons of stuff from LAST winters catalogs). I hope to see your results so I know what to buy NEXT year

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Rosemary, I bought 'Nymph' a few years ago from them and have never been sorry. :)

Okay, I just had to go and check them out. Now I'm on their email list. Oops!

Karen

Thomaston, CT

I've been buying from them for years....have always received quality bulbs......

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Good to know.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Yep, Nymph is clearly a gotta have, as I basically have only a handful of named DL now. I admire all the beauties y'all are posting.

Since we're talking about indulgences, I have WAY done it big with peony root orders for the fall. Too many to list. Lots of beds to enlarge. I'm creating-extending a white (primarily) peony garden in my back yard on top of the hill and in front of lilacs. Call me sentimental, but if a daughter gets married at home that would be the spot. My grandmother's peony bed was a special spot and first communion pics were always there. I'm certain that Avalanche was one of hers. We have high school graduation next June, too, hence the hurry. I am also enlarging a cool-er color bed plus magentas and maroon, and adding to a hot colored bed centered around Bartzella and reds and lilies with the dark maroons too (including Mahogany which was just mentioned). The corals and lavenders are in-between. The tree peonies are elsewhere along a fence. I've listed my peonies on the DG journal page, with some still as "wanted". I don't know anything formally about garden design but I love colors and I like to experiment until I like something. I didn't know about coops either, but have spread the orders around among well known peony nurseries. It's only a couple hundred dollars in roots for a lot of happiness. I started the project last year and there were already some lovely blooms this June. The true indulgence will be if I have to pay someone to prepare the beds. You can be sure I'll post next May - June.

Next, don't get me started on hardy Ackerman camellias...

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Rosemary, that sounds like an ambitious and wonderful project. I look forward to seeing pics. Just remember that Peonies start looking good about year 3 after planting, same as DL's. The first year you probably won't get much.

Karen

Thomaston, CT

That plan sounds wonderful, Rosemary.....I added peonies to a new garden 2 years ago, they all did fine except one that didn't bloom.....if no blooms next year, I'll dig it up.....I planted one this year called Coral Charm......

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Yes, for the first season, I was just happy to get any blooms on the new peonies. then I realized that some of the buds were being chewed, so the project required us to trim and cut some Norway maples which is done now. I just want it to be neat by next year, perhaps a few more blooms and I'll be happy. Coral charm was one of my new peonies that promised and then didn't deliver blooms in its first spring.

Here's where I spent my $$
The little maples are gone now.

And here is my "thicket" of growing plugs and small potted shrubs and trees with our new patio table. It is aluminum with a tile top so the water will just wash through when I pot plants on it. Fortunately not all of these plants are in need of planting since my indoor plants are summering outside too. Up high is a shade sail. By the fence, I've already dug up the preexisting burning bushes and replaced with a baby witch hazel. Some of these plants are going to replace those small maples in the front yard. With any luck, instead of pests, I am hoping to encourage swallowtails in the Lindera. Thanks for the encouragement, Karen.

The table is a great idea!

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks. Now I have to get to work!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

You're welcome, Rosemary. I like the new table. I could use one myself. What I end up doing is potting up in the wheelbarrow. I have a huge two-wheeler, and I fill it with compost and cow manure, which I mix together. I just put my plants and pots in the wheelbarrow and start potting.

Rosemary - I love your idea of the peony bed for possible family event photos. My Momhad 1,000+ orchids, and my sister's wedding flowers were all orchids. It is a great memory for me.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Wow! 1,000 orchids! That must have been totally amazing.
Fortunately for me, peonies are pretty easy care.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

An oh, I'm also with Karen on using a wheelbarrow. Anything to mix it all up, but sometimes just on the spot where the planting is. A tile table will only work for light projects or i'll scratch and break it. Still I expect to use it more than the usual patio tables.

Its nice to know that I'm not the only one outside working in the garden when the opportunity presents.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

I often use my garden cart to pot things up if I've mixed up some good stuff. It's easier to just make the mess in the cart. When I don't do it that way I pot things up in my old farm sink next to my potting shed.

Pirl, i am with you on the kneeling pads. :)

After I weeded the south garden, I realized it was empty....so, today, after babysitting, I treated myself to 2 lantanas, creeping zinnia, & a petunia....all on sale! The garden looks a little better.....

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Sounds like a very pretty filler, Marilyn, and just think- empty garden space = a spending spree! Wheeee! :)

I had a girlfriend visit for a few days and when she left I had filled her car with plants that needed to be thinned. Our Colorado grands and their parents are coming Tuesday for 2 weeks, so we are shifting gears between guests and prepping the house for a curious toddler. As much as we enjoy our guests, it does take its toll and we are pretty tired today.
