I heard that news happ. Saw the funeral procession on the news last night. so sad!
My soil stinks LK. It is hard pan red clay out there. I dig out a hole then add a mixture of soil booster, fertilizer, water crystals and top soil to actually do the planting in. ^_^ You can't dig a hole without pulling up a rock. The back yard has some decent dirt, but I haven't started there yet.
She's about to...61... Spring has sprung!!
Ours literally takes a jack hammer do dig any, and yes, we have big boulders. So all my flowers are in pots or a raised bed.
I don't have any rocks anywhere but I do have clay. I think you could make pottery with it. I am digging weeds out not pulling. Course right now it is thundering so I am indoors. Finally I hear some rain! I was gonna be upset if all we got is thunder and no rain!
I like the looks of the black mulch but the more I think about it I really think I will only use it in the shade garden, you know in 90 to 100 degree weather it might be too much soaking up all that sun shine.....
Good thinking happ! Hope you get some good rain!
Linda Kay, I like doing all the tropicals in pots for sure, I would never get them dug in the fall otherwise. Think I could dig to China before I found a rock...it is odd how regions are so different. You don't have to go to far south in Missouri to hit lots of rock.
Crit when traveling in OKlahoma I wondered about the soil. One of the woman in the office ask me about something in her garden and told her I just wasn't for sure with the red soil. Guys if you haven't been to Oklahoma it is truely red.
We had 5 minutes of rain, 5 minutes! Do you know what that did to the humidity...omg!! So far all the storms have went north of us, winds strong, but really humid. The thunder stopped so I was back out, got the whole east side done. Well onto the north side in the morning it dawned on me today when you come down the driveway that is the first garden you see.....think it will take longer than 1 day.....not sure.
black mulch will fry roots, I have found.. anyway, the storm has passed, Mayas 2 open blooms stayed on thru the high winds and torrential rains, so glad we got some rain, now I can go out and scoop up some red clay for my seed balls.. *sigh*
so much devastation from storms and loss of lives, it is sad,,
sister called me today bawling her eyes out, she went to work, got sick and her boss told her to go home, she started crying at work and cryed for an hour on the phone with me at my work.. i feel so... helpless right now.
the new chemo is kicking her butt, her 17 yr old went to the lake instead of staying home to take care of her mother, when I get down there I am going to talk to that girl..
Can't they give her something to prevent her from getting sick? Sure wish I was there to giver her ((((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))))))) and kick some butt on her daughter. That is terrible what she did!
Debra, my heart breaks for your sister. I know it is so tough on you also, being so far away, but you are doing a good thing listening that is so very important. You finally got some rain? No more than my 5 minutes so far for us. Need it to rain tonight not tomorrow during the day... lol
Teenagers ..... the majority of them don't see past the end of their nose.
Of course, I had a H, not DH lol, that was like that though. I was sick and couldn't get off the couch to go get a drink of water. He'd been sickly a couple days before and felt better when he got up and moved around. He told me to just get up and I'd feel better and he went off with his brother in law. Before he got home I was in the hospital with bacterial pneumonia, also known as Legionaires Disease. I noticed my fingernail beds were blue and called a neighbor to take me to the hosp.
I had a hubby like that too! Notice I said HAD! MEN!!! Glad you had the sense to call a neighbor!
Hosta swap going on if anyone is interested.
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1182162/#new
Thanks Happ! I would have to admit to being a little leery of swapping hostas though with all the Hosta Virus X out there. Even some nurseries around here won't carry a lot of hostas for that reason. Just a thought.
rvnsbrk those are pretty lilies. I have really tall ones and some medium and some shorties...;) They are a great plant. I have that orange with the black big eyes. It use to grow huge but I think it gets too much shade where it is now that the trees have grown up.
Yeah that is a problem swapping hostas. When I swap on the hosta forum, I puchase my hosta and make sure it is big enough for me to keep part...rofl, so they always get what I want, then the ones I receive go in a holding bed.....We have a great hosta nursery here, he has huge trees with hostas growing under them so you can see them in "real" life not just a pot.
When I first joined DG and saw all the things to watch out in plants I became neurotic! rolf! Every plant I looked at looked like it had some horrible diease...rofl. This year I guess there is a horrible diease for cannas. I heard cannas might be in short suppy but I don't see that at all.
I wasn't as energetic today. I was out at 6 in my pj's. I really just went out with my tea and one thing went to another and it was 9:30 before I came in...glad no one can see me cause I didn't even comb my hair. I was trying to be quiet not to wake up DH and the dogs. It was really dark and looked like a storm but nothing, then it got sunny humid and horrible. I did get the northeast garden presentable....which was my goal. Decided to cook for DH I forgot how much time that takes...good grief. I hate cooking, but I am making ribs, cole slaw, and the normal stuff. Wish I liked doing it and maybe I would if I had more time....but that I don't have.
These two are tinys in front of the border.
Oooo those are pretty Happ.. I do the same thing in the mornings. Go out in my pajamas and wander around doing stuff until I get all dirty and then have to stuff everything in the wash. No one here to see me except the critters, so that's no problem.
I couldn't resist. I had to channel my inner florist...

OH MY ONLY BUG is something after my rose bush I cannot find the critter eating my leaves any idea's as to what it is or how to treat this . ??? it just on this rose bush others are fine so far. but i cannot find a bug on the bush.
My goodness, that is a beautiful arrangement, Bravo!
Susie I'm not sure what the one in the center is. I have a bunch of lilies that I planted before I knew I should stick the names on them.
Debra, glad you liked the arrangement. Wish I could send one to everyone needs a smile.
Really pretty pics everyone! I have a Toronto (I think that's the name) that should be in bloom today. It was starting to open last night.
Can't help you on the rose, sorry.
Such beautiful Lilies and Daylilies! I have a couple small very dark burnt orange and large orange blooming right now.. never more than two blooms at a time. Things struggle to bloom at all here. There were some nice yellow ones blooming a few days ago in my front flower beds... I really enjoyed going out there every morning to see 'a bloom a day'. I too wander around in my sleep shirt! My mother has finally decided it is OK to wear her sleep wear in the back yard.. it took her 76 years! Yesterday she actually answered the door wearing her sleep PJ's.. I nearly died! I actually laughed out loud when she opened the door. That was unheard of until yesterday.. they really look like lounge wear though.
I actually cried when I got up this morning and looked out my bedroom window at my yard. I saw my poor lost orleanders and remembered how beautiful they used to be! They were huge and produced wonderous bloom flushes... never again and it actaully made me sit down and cry to think my yard will never look that way again. It took me 20 years to get that! It just hit me.. and it was a bad morning... difficult to get out of bed due to back pain... 50th birthday coming up on the 1st.... Oh, and wanting RAIN!!! It is actually getting depressing wanting rain so badly. I will gladly take that 5 min of rain.. anything would be a big help. Came out of Walmart the other day and could smell the rain... nothing! UGH! Such a tease! I cleaned several inches of dirt out of my gutter at my potting shed the other day.. it has been so long since anything has run through it.
Debra.. I am sorry your sisiter is going through the secondary illness caused by chemo... there are some drugs available that do help with the nausea but sometimes you just have to ride it out unfortunately. Don't know the situation with the 17 year old.. is it her way of coping.. is she normally helpful or 'clueless'?
Hello to all! Just want to show some beauties and have a pity party.
Pity party is for all my Angels that are naked! No leaves, spider mites and me took them off. You wouldn't believe how pretty they were before spiders. Some are blooming in spite of being naked, not a pretty sight.
Now for the beauty. This is 4 of my 35 named Daylillies blooming now. Still have others not blooming. So many too that aren't named are as pretty as these.
Beautiful Faye!! Some of the ones you gave me are trying to bloom too. They don't have much foliage, but they are sticking up scapes and giving it a go.
My brugs don't look all the great either. No mites, but they seem very slow to get going. At this rate they will be blooming at Christmas!
Tammi what happened to the oleanders?? I missed something somewhere. I'd be sad too if I was staring down the big 50 again. It's been the pits ever since. :)) This morning I decided to try to start fixing an erosion problem that came from the damaged gutters on our house. The finally got all that fixed on Monday. Well I decided that I needed to reset the sidewalk which is made out of large rectangular slates. They are about 1.5 inches thick and easily 3 feet long. After prying up 3 of them and moving them and the replacing them I realized once again that I am no longer 40. My back may never be the same again! I hate this getting older thing because I am responsible for the maintenance here. All of it and if I can't be strong enough to take care of it, Lord help us. Sorry for the rant...all by way of commiserating with the age, thing.
Dear Nita, bless your heart. Lady I know what you're talking about. But to start with, those sidewalk tiles are way to heavy for you, even if you are as strong and as smart as most men. It doesn't take long at all for my back to hurt me all way from my neck to my feet. But if it's gets done, I will have to do it because Ray isn't able.
Please be careful, after all, I want to see you again!
Has anyone heard from marti001? Last I heard was May 31 & she said she was going to send me bulbs that week. Not heard from her nor did I get bulbs. Sure hope she is ok.
evening ev1 what a day sure have my arms hurting tonight guess its called carpotunnel or pinched nerve in the neck will know in a couple weeks for sure > doc put me on a prednisonefor 5 days to help take the inflamation down but don't guess it is helpping when i keep on working them as hard as ever :)
we had a heavy rain last night so it is easy digging for the weeds :) I need a shower then to get dad in the shower
then off to rest so you all have a great evening .
Nice lily blooms i have a few daylilies just coming into bloom will take pictures tomorrow when there is more sun shine .

rvnsbrk love the arrangement. If I put 3 flowers together it looks like the dog did it...
deejay I am sure I have landnii or however you spell it. I will have to look and will be happy to send you some.
dahtzu, love the pics of the flowers.
50...50....I wanna be 50 again, well sort of I want to retire and I sure can't do that at 50....dang...rofl After spending 3 days in the garden I am the happiest I have been all year. I am relaxed and just happy....feels good.....just happy no way to explain but I don't have to to you all... ;)
DH is taking me to dinner, gotta go chat with you all in the am. Have a great night.....
Wow, Susie, is your beautiful Peony blooming now? *snif* Here they're at their peak around Mother's Day.
happ, You go girl! We were talking at the RU how the whole gamut of gardening is therapeutic and heals from the inside out. You sorta lose yourself and all track of time and forget your troubles and woes and the daily grind. Ya'll know what I mean.
Hey, does this Lily look familiar to any of you? Can't remember now who gave me a couple of bulbs last year and if there's a tag, it's buried in mulch. The plant is only about 1-1/2' tall with blooms larger than my open hand.
Fruity, it looks like one of my lilies, but mine are taller than that. If it is mine they look kind of antiquey to me, called suncrest.
Pretty blooms DJ. It got so hot here so quick the peonies didn't last long. They did make it to Memorial Day but that was the end.
Ouch I have a rose thorn I think in my finger tip, can't find it but sure feel it keying...owie..
Calling for rain tomorrow, we will see, still have lots of garden to weed, but we need the rain. Well guess it is tomorrow....rofl, no rain so far.

Beautiful blooms everyone! I have not seen Marti anywhere. Praying she is OK!
Lots of pretty green and flowers everyone!
I lost my orleanders and a lot of my other plants this winter because we have had no rain since last september and it was very cold. Below 20 for days at a time and below 10 quite a bit. I tried to limit the water I used because our sewer rates are based on the amount of water we use in the winter time...they increase the monthly rate for the year based on how much we use the winter before... I have fescue grass and have to water my yard all winter anyway and it was terrible having to water ... I limited as much as I could.... My rates tripled anyway! ... and I still lost plants because I did not water enough! I am paying over $400 more this year because of the increase! It is sooo unfair because I am single and really have actual minimal sewer use compared to other neighbors with 5 and 6 people in their houses who don't water their yards in the winter... yes.. ranting! I am sooo ANGRY! My city water/sewer bill monthly is running about $105 and only $40 is water. Think they are making some extra $$ off me? LOL
Anyway... I am watering my yard now when in needs it.. within the watering restrictions... sort of... LOL
Have a look at my yard buddy.. he came up to my door for a bite a little while ago.. I think he was born here! He has grown this year.. this is his third year!
Tammie, love your yard buddy! Does he have a name?
Sorry to hear about your water rates going so high! Wow, that is a lot to pay for water and sewer. We pay about $70.00 for water, sewer, and garbage in one bill. And I thought that was high!
LK your leaves look familiar to me. Just not placing it right now. I know it...
Tammi what kind of turtle is that? We had a nice box turtle out here this afternoon after the rain.
Faye, I got a little help this PM to get those slates back down, but I think I am going to have to come up with a better fix for that sidewalk. Something that I can handle myself. I'm so excited because I had some seeds that Fruity gave me that I think were from you. They were for a hardy yellow hibiscus. They sprouted and started going pretty good, but I never thought they would bloom. Looked at them today and the have tiny buds!! You should have seen the happy dance I did. :))
Happ I know how you feel. Being outside even if it is just pulling weeds is about as peaceful as I get these days. With all the elder care issues right now that is about the only time I get a mental time out. That flower arrangement is really holding up well. I can't believe it looks as good as the day I did it. My new favorite flowers are those lilies. Going to fill up all the empty space in the iris bed with them I think.
Just a little desert box turtle. I have or had a very large one around here.. haven't seen it in a while.. it occasionally makes an appearance. I don't know if it has gotten out of the yard or not. I have a tiny yard but it does hide. I found what I think is the mother about 5 years ago on the highway outside of Roswell, New Mexico after a rain storm. I stopped in the middle of the highway and picked it up before a big truck could run it over. About 3 years this one showed up about the size of a quarter.. it is now about 4 1/2 inche around. Comes right up to me begging for food. I buy soft dog food for when it shows up.. my dogs are very happy those days because I open a package for the turtle and they share the rest! >>>otherwise.. my dogs only get dry food... oh, happy day for them when the turtle shows up.
Cute turtle and story, Tammie.
LK, I think it is: Ipomoea lobata: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1317/
I grew a few of these plants from seeds I'm sure you gave me, Debra. They're just starting to twine & drape in one of the baskets.
Isn't it still a type of Morning Glory, anybody?
Gee look at all that nicely mown grass in the background.. Hee Hee..
