I love that C. Kona Coffee and like you we don't have a nearby HD. I found they have them at Plant Delights and I will be going up there for a class in a week or so and, if they still have some left, I am going to pick one up.
I emailed LariAnn about the Alocasia Kapit but never heard back from her, guess she does not grow that one. Kona looks a lot like it.
Homer, what are you feeding those nanas, they look great? Mine will not fruit this year as they took soo long to come back from the dead.
Tropical Garden # 101
Ardesia; Mushroom compost topdressing and 1/4 strength Miracle Gro right now. Switching to compost tea in about 2 weeks.
Rita, thanks. I like your C. Kona Coffee too and your P. Gigas looks great and very healthy. I can imagine just how big those leaves will be getting for you in a few more years.
Drew, gorgeous landscaping along with all those Alocasias and bananas.
Debra, I like your Sarian as well.
mjs, I'm stumped. At first I thought your plant may be Typhonium venosum but after looking at the ones I have, I don't think so. Rita may recognize who you have there.
Thanks Drew, I'll have to try that.
ardesia, yes I saw the Kona coffee at plant delights website, but by the time I got it shipped it's a little pricey. I have a local source besides Home Depot I can check.
I hear 'ya, that is why I am holding off until I get there. PD shipping costs are pretty darn high.
Rj, did you get your blood lily from Zone 9? I would make a specal trip to procure a few of those beauties.
I can't wait to start eating papayas this summer, I have a few blossoms already. I hope that your big mother plant survived the cold, those are the best eating papayas ever.
I have Guava blossoms as well
dyz, I will eventually have to make a dwarf garden as I am running out of gardening space and have to stay off ladders.
My Dh likes to tease that I am the only gardener that has a ladder and duck tape as regular gardening tools. lol
Love your yellow Cannas, they brighten up the garden.
I am into gold foliage this year, and found these very nice ferns to hide my ugly pots.
Rita's Gold.
mjsponies, Happy Kona hunting! If not successful, I can split one with you, the 1gal. pot is full.
Sorry, I cannot help to ID your voodoo Lily. Tropicbreeze is the expert but he has not visited for a while now.
ardesia, I am jealous of your shopping trip to Plant Delights, remember to take your camera.
I have to show this Echinacea, I have 3 plants to come back this spring, all the other hybrids died.
Rita, CookTown Sunset is beautiful, that has always been one of my favorite Plummies. I am going to PD for a propagation class taught by Tony Avant. It is an all day, 100 degrees in the shed class, but you are supposed to come home with all kinds of plant material and I already have a long list of others I want to pick up while I am there. I promise to take lots of pictures.
Dyz, is that a variegated Clivia I see under the Canna?
Rita thanks,I like to look at them at night more than the day, especially after a good rain!
Rachel, you know it is a lot of HARD work keeping it up,but very well worth it!
dyzzypyxxy, If you would like for me to take some of your Stuggarts off your hands I would pay you for them!
Ardesia, you will have to tell and show (pictures) us how it went at P.D.!
Rachel! Forgot to mention how healthy your A. Stingray and A. Portei are!
Kay, wish it was! But it's just my amaryllis foliage with the sun glancing off the leaves.
Drew, I will be glad to send you as many Stuttgarts as you would like, so long as you understand the reason I'm getting rid of them is that they never developed the lovely variegated foliage they're supposed to have. I ordered them twice from two different suppliers, same story! I'm told the variegation is the result of something they call a 'chimera' and that it can appear and disappear at random. I've waited years . . ..
It's possible they will be variegated in another soil type, I don't know. Let me know if you still want them.
Another canna 'Striped Beauty' that has nice striped cream and green foliage like the Bengal Tiger ones. The flowers come out blazing yellow, then develop white flares as they age. Wierd thing is they're kind of leggy even in full sun - the flower scapes are 2 feet above the last leaf! Maybe if I water them less??
I have been told the Stuttgards require colder weather than we can provide in the lower south. They live but they are not outstanding. It might be cool enough in NC.
Hm, we have had some pretty cold weather even 'way down here, these last two winters. Winter of '09 - '10 we had two spells of two weeks where it went below freezing every night. Still no variegation.
The Stuttgart Cannas are very healthy, tall vigorous plants with nice blue/green foliage that bloom well and everything, they just don't get the variegated leaves. I had them in a spot that was increasingly shaded in summer by a big, tall clump of bamboo, so the 'Dr. Moy' gingers are in there now. They got great sun in spring and fall, and bloomed almost year 'round unless it got cold.
Ardesia; I will give it a shot, d-mail me and let me know the particulars please!
Rita, I don't remember where I got the blood lily- I've had it for years.
I love those Erythrinia trees. I had one but it was killed by frost. That's the problem here, we have a few days of below freezing temperatures. I have limited space so all my brugs and bananas have to die down every winter and I can't really grow a lot of the tropicals.
Randy, as usual, your plants amaze me!
Randy! VERRY COOOL!
Drew, I think it was Dzzy that had the Stuttgards, I was warned about them not performing by a Charleston nurseryman years ago so I have never had any myself.
Hello Everyone!!
Dyz, those are truly some beautiful tropical pictures. Your Cordia Boissieri is a new plant for me to research, it's very pretty.
Rj , it is very nice to have you back in the garden with your camera!! I will decline your generous offer, only because I don't want you to split up your display. My niece in Florida said that she can find some for me. Thank you very much!!
New blooms are so exciting, love your new Bauhinia vine.
New first bloom on a Frangipani vine.
That's the prettiest heliconia leaf ever! Be sure to post a picture when it blooms.
Is there a common name for the Erythrinia? I couldn't find it in Plant Finder. Again, exquisite foliage.
Here's the best I can do for fancy leaves - this coleus keeps changing colors, first it's mostly purple, then it has green edges and pink mottling, now it's got streaks of yellow coming along. Endless entertainment.
They are called coral tree, too. They are beautiful.
Ardesia,
SO SORRY!
No prob, :-)
Show us more aroids Rachel;PLEASE!
