Tropical Garden # 101

mjs, great suggestion from Drew, It looks so cute.

Drew, your Monstera D. is looking real good.

Rita, I like the color on your Epi. too. Here is an updated picture from a very nice gift you gave me last year and I'm still loving it.

rita, that is awsome..does it really take three years for those to come to bloom? If so, one of mine should bloom this year, if the critters would stay out of it. rachel, I hope mine gets like that ( monstera cheese cake_philo) should it be in full sun? I have it in morning sun.

I have the mini black majics, somewhere.. they looked real cute last year..was cold all day today and now it is kinda raining..

Good morning, everyone! All your flowers are lovely - thanks for sharing pictures with us!

Huntersville, NC(Zone 7b)

Rachel,

Do you have any support on the Monstera other than the rail in your picture?
Debra, My 2 cents; dawn to about 10AM and then shifting shade, back to sun after 6 PM. What do you think Rachel and Rita?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

My A. Culculata stays quite small and nicely shaped. Could be it is just these horrible winters have stunted its growth.

Caddo Mills, TX(Zone 8a)

Debra,
do you keep your monstera in the ground year round or do you dig it up for the winter? I have mine in a pot and it is looking tattered.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Mjs and Woo Hoo, on Poly coming back for you. I kind of figured it would though;) I'll be looking forward to seeing pictures of your presents and I've viewed that fern at Steve's place. You'll love it.

Debra, great group picture of some of your plants and I agree with Drew on what he stated concerning the var. Monstera.

Drew, as of now, the plant is holding it's own but I'll probably have to give it some support before long.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Happy Birthday, MJ.. I sure hope your day was Grand. I am so happy for you to have gotten a sign of life from your a.polly, that sure brightens up your Green Thumb a tad, eh?

Where the monstera is seems to be okay then, the sun is on it in the am for a few hours, then shade and then a couple hours in late afternoon as the sun moves over the house. If the squirrels weren't so rampant out back, I would set it under the elm tree, but this year, without a dog in the yard, they are chewing and digging up all kinds of stuff. Going to put big flat rocks on all the pots, since they have eaten the tips off the newly emerging giant EE's. tore up my iris and hostas, dug up bulbs and all kinds of stuff. I am pretty mad at them considering I feed them good food. There is a sweet little siamese kitty next door with the two dogs now, her name is mia, she meows at me thru the fence, I think I like her. Wish I had their pets, and they can concentrate on their human babies. LOL

anyway, Sting Ray is putting up a new leaf, purple cloak is peeking up, and nancys revenge and elena all have a leaf unfurling, they are in the front away from the squirrels out back. *sigh*

Debra, I sympathize with the squirrel situation! I watched in disbelief as one chewed off a bud of my spiral ginger flowers today! They also raid the bird feeder every morning and scatter the seed all over the garden. I greased the pole on the bird feeder, but that only lasts a couple of days, then they find a way to climb it again.

But, oh sweet revenge arrived today! For Mother's Day, my son bought me a Nerf gun that shoots little styrofoam darts. They don't hurt but they sure scare the squirrels off nicely. I used to use the hose to scare them, but it's too slow to go get it, and drag it to where I can spray those quick little rodents.

I have a whole tree full of mangoes set to ripen in the next month or so, so the battle will go on for a while here. I also use owl dummies, and a pepper spray mixture called "Critter Ridder" to keep them away from the fruit trees. I tried hanging mothballs in the tree for a while last year, but it made the whole garden smell terrible so I gave up on that one.

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

Debra Thank you for the B-day wishes. I can sympathize with the critter problem. Deer have been a big problem this year, with the drought they are coming up into the yard and nibbling on mostly the morning glories but they also ate the tops out of my sweet banana peppers....grrrr. The squirrels dug in several pots of Peach Achimenes and tipped them over. I hope they are as resilient as the purple and come up under the bench somewhere. I really feel bad for my neighbor down the road. We at least have perimeter fencing around the farm as well as interior fencing which slows the deer down " a little bit". They even ate her big 15 ft. tall Abultion !

Hello All!!

homer1958, thanks, I agree that the Cheese cake Philo. will thrive in either morning sun or a very few hours in the afternoon. I have them doing great in both, they are easy to please.
Nice to see your Monstera doing so well, I love a good comeback story.

Wow!! those are looking so good for this early in the growing season, I can see from the chair that you also like to sit and watch your plants grow. lol

Joeswife, lucky you! I have always grown Ipomoea and have never seen them bloom.
I also have had Orchid Cactus for years, and had one to bloom after 2 years. Another 3 years and I am still waiting on a yellow to bloom going on 4 yrs. I have read that they like to be potbound.

RachelLF, what can I say? my heart did a flip! Great growing and I love the setting, with the horses in the backgroud.

This is my Philo. Gigas, 4ys old and the leaves have stayed the same size.

dyz, if your mango tree is not too tall, you might try netting to keep the critters away from the fruit. I would hate for you to not harvest those. I love mangos!

mjsponies, I hope that you had a Great Birthday! Those are very nice plants that you got.
I can't help with the mini Colocasias, but have grown Xanthosoma sagittifolium variegata that did not get too large.

Lily_love, I love that view! now that your Tropical plants are blooming, I hope that we see you more often.

Tina_A, can you show your plant? Hopefully, someone can share a few tips and tricks with you.

texasbigleaves, this is the bloom from the variegated rose-of-Sharon, they stay this size then fall off.

Rita, I do have a net for the lychee tree, as it is still only 8 or 9 feet tall. But the mango tree is just too darn big now.

I also have a cool thing called a 'Scarecrow sprinkler'. It is an impulse sprinkler with a motion sensor so it even detects critters and birds in the dark. It sprays a 3-second strong, loud shot of water whenever it sees movement. Unfortunately, the lychee tree is out front and the sprinkler went off whenever a car (or bike or someone walking) went by. So it is somewhat limited in its application. It also detects leaf movement, so there's a lot of sprinkling going on when it's windy, too.

My little cream cannas with pale pink spots. They're a nice size, only about 18 inches tall.

Hey, let's face it - if you have dwarf plants you have room for more! More plants - yay.

I have found treasures at Home Depot and Lowe's quite often, too. Even Wal-Mart and the grocery store have had some great finds.

Those little white dwarf cannas came from Lowe's as did these yellow ones out by my pond.

Oh Rita I love that Drawf Cona Coffee , Our Home Depot is a little hike...so I rarely get over there, I need to do some digging around to find that one !

Dyzzy, love your little cream canna too ! I'm STILL waiting on some of my canna's to bloom, we need rain !!!

This little Voodoo Lily keeps popping up. The pot got knocked over in the bed last year and I had forgotten what was in it and just left the soil in the bed, no I can't remember which one it is.
