ardesia, i just bought it like that from LariAnn. it is a Superoots Air-Pot, made in Scotland from recycled plastic. they train your plant to develop radial root symtem with out root circling. i know that it is a very slow grower. i saw somewhere that is must be planted in acidic soil mixture of half spagnum peat moss and half perlite.
homer thanks, thanks for the link. the lime zinger i got from prita quite awhile ago. i also got a super max from lariann too.
Tropical Garden # 101
Thanks, I do have mine in half peat/half perlite. Does yours fruit?
Candela, I have that same costus, and same experience. They were under a huge old oak tree, and never bloomed until we had the tree thinned so they have more light. Now they put up new shoots and bloom every spring.
They're really easy to propagate - and make a really nice pot plant if you're inclined. See picture. This one roves around according to where I need a filler, and I have lots of filtered sun areas for it. It has bloomed on almost all the tall stems this spring already. The squirrels found a couple of the flowers rather tasty, because I had it propped against the bole of a palm tree, but otherwise, nothing bothers it. Needs a new pot, though . . .
If I let the ones under the oak tree go, they bend over to the ground and root themselves.
Now Prita has sent me starts of a couple more kinds.
Candela,
What is a Supermax? Do you have a picture?
How cool that you costus roots wherever. I am going to have to rescue mine and see if they have done that. The bed has been taken over by the evil Nephrolepis obliterata and I can no longer see the soil. Every time it rains and the soil is soft, I yank those ferns out by the hundreds but they are like weeds, they grow back twice as fast. RU doesn't even slow them down.
Costus from last year.
homer it is a hybrid cross between an Alocasia odora and an Alocasia robusta called a Robudora SuperMax one of lariann 's creations i forgot to take a picture this morning i will later.
ardesia i have a different costus i think it is called crepe ginger or something like that but the problem is i am not sure which one it is hopefully it will flower soon.
ive been thinking of ordering some of aroidreseard's "airpots" ?? homer so u have some plants in them? how do u
like them?
i ordered 2 of lariann's robudora supermax plants.. looking foward to seeing how big i can get them !!!
with some of my EE's ive cut holes on sides of the pots to give more drainage.. dont have enough experience
with enough plants to know if its really helped the plants.. they do drain faster.. i water them more than others
in just regular pots..
?? others that are growing the "Robudora SuperMax" plant from lariann.. do you have a favorite potting soil
youre having great sucess with?
during the summer..i plan to put out in gardens.. then pull out in oct for overwintering..
thanks much !!
Candela, you purchased some very nice Aroids from Lariann. I especially like the last Anthurium you showed. I recently purchased A. podophyllum x faustomirandae and I am looking forward to watching it grow up.
tropicalnut777, great thinking on cutting holes on the sides of your pots. I do this as well for some of mine as it does allow for better drainage ,as you stated, and it also aids in better aeration for the root system.
Debra; You so funny... that girrrl she funny!!!!!
Rachel, yes you do; and the Moonlight had almost half it's leaves torn off at Lowe's. I asked the mgr. if she would take 50% off and she said yes! Ask and ye shall receive!
Those Robudoras are growing FAST! Maybe 6-8' by the end of the summer!
Good evening everyone.
Oh my a lot to catch up on.
homer1958; Your question about my V.Philo. Giganteum reverting back to green. It produced about ten leaves last summer and they where all green. Now it has two leaves variegated. This is a picture of it or what is left of it after the storm the other day. Jerry
homer..wow.. not bad size !!
to overwinter them..will you cut them down and pot up and keep inside?
you would need a pretty big greenhouse/sunroom to keep them...
i think when mine come (probably mid june) i will pot up in bigger pots..
really good draining soil.. and keep in one of my make shift greenhouses.. till
beginning of july.. we can have a few chilly nites.. maybe that will help them
grow bit faster with consistant warm temps..
think that could help?
im starting with them a bit late in season.. i should have ordered them in
april and got them going earlier..
alas.. but at least i have some..
yea!!!!
Jerry, Sorry to hear of your V.Giganteum and the Maximum getting storm damage! It only takes the one time and years of hard work can be shredded.
777, Anytime you can give those bad boys heat and humidity on a consistent basis, they will rock! As far as bringing them in; I will cut off all but the last couple of leaves and cut the roots back about a third, place them in the smallest pot I can stuff them in and bring inside to a south facing window and water when they show me they need some. Be careful to acclimate to the sun a couple of weeks when taking back outside in July or you can burn the leaves!
This a pic. of my Robudoras last summer.Leaves are just starting to get big now. These are ( i think ) the first cross LariAnn made, ALO.Dora x Alo. Robusta.
Speaking of Robustas,i bet i bought about twenty of them just to watch them die.If i had all the money back from all plants that have died i could buy a new truck!
hi MOM! , pandorea pink bower vine is kicking out new leaves now, poor tropicals were doing so good before I put them out, then they perked up for a few days early this spring, then it got very cold, and well, now we are starting over, but she is being a good plant baby. Thanks, Lin..I sure love my adopted babies..
Debra,
Chinese laterns are Abutilon, your looks like A. tompsonii http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1012/
not much new going on here.. plumeria buds opening and some canna's I'll try to get pics of when they do.
Jerry, What are the size of your leaves in the picture of the Robudoras? How tall? In ground?
Hello Everyone!!
At a quick glance, I can tell that this is yet another great Thread!! So many new plants and great pictures.
I am waiting for my tropical garden to recover from the storms a few weeks back, lots of shreaded foliage and sun damage.
This is Anthurium Faustomirandae, battered and torn but still a handsome plant.
