Coffee Break #57

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks, just a casual shot while I ate brunch, the guy was picking up worms like they were going out of style...
- meanwhile I was eating bacon & eggs. (lol!)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Offer to share the worms??

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Naww, stingy guy, (gave me the 'evil eye' all the time), guess he was mad I was eating eggs...

Beware of robins !!!

I was "dive-bombed" when I got within 20 feet of the nest while gardening, 3 years ago.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

We have one which has made a nest in our Magnolia tree every year for the past 3yrs, same branch, same spot. She sits on her eggs and we walk under the branch every day, only about 4' above our heads. She's accepted us as part of the package if she's going to nest here.. She's had several broods and we've seen them as babies until they fly off. I just saw for the first time this spring on Tuesday checking out the branch.

- On the other hand we've found that Blue-jays are intolerant. I've been dive bombed by the ones I feed, they've been here quite some time and are friendly and nice when not nesting, but once they nest, Watch OUT!
My uncle was pecked by one here two years ago, a small cut, but scalp wounds bleed profusely.
- funny, now that I think of it he hasn't been back since! (lol!)

that is pretty cool wc

Mockers can be very mean acting, too!

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Yes, they definitely are the most territorial around here. They make a hissing sound like an angry snake to ward off competitors. But they sometimes back off, especially when they 'know' you're trying to help.

The mother of this brood was watching from a perch 30' away when I saved her nest and every now and then adjusted my makeshift nest I set up for her. She didn't even protest vocally, but instead would wait until I finished maintenance, (which sometimes included placing her young back in the nest). She never did a 'fly-by' on me! lol!

Photo of chicks is a KEEPER !!!

Mockingbirds are so aggressive, they have a reputation in Washington D.C. from several years ago; the birds located their nest near a heavily-traveled office building, and disrupted regular foot traffic.

There's probably video of it somewhere.

Love that picture, WC!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Hi everybody! Yeah, great picture, WC! Great custom made nest, too! These chicks are stylin'!

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Seems many of the reptilian traits are still with that species, even their eyes are more reptilian in appearance than many other Northeastern birds..

Yep, it's a 'keeper' but this one is my fave, - they all got together for a group shot that July afternoon, they weren't scared of me so they just stood there and let me take a closeup while mom watched, (no set-up & un-prompted). Almost as if they were saying goodbye.. they all left the nest 2 days later, probably the only thing that stopped them from leaving the very next day was a huge thunderstorm we had which lasted the better part of the day, ( I had to rescue 2 of them in that storm.. lol!)

Oh well, what we do for the love of things...

(Hi Amy! Hi Harper! lol! ☺)

Great Canon ad in a photo mag. Shows a beautiful beach bathed in late-day golden light. Quote reads, " I gaze at the sunset with the woman I love and think, F8 at 1/250"

Classic.

Thomaston, CT

Just awesome photos, WC! My flicker was back today, so I'm hoping he'll stay...

Thomaston, CT

Good grief! You are so baaaad!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Great ad, Victor, and glad you still have your flicker.

Remember the famous "Buck well spent" ad? How could YOU forget it? Never!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Hee hee!

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

(Awww, thanks guys, it's the least I could have done for the little aviators.. I fixed a cardinals broken wing last year, I'm getting visions of Burt Lancaster with the canaries now...☺)

Funny Victor! I usually end up thinking about what lens I would use if I had my camera with me.. lol!

Glad the tests came up negative with Grant Robindog, hopefully there's nothing wrong with him at all!

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I remembered that cardinal when I posted.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Hee hee! - yes he hung around last year until Fall, probably went to find new territory. His brother and his mate are still here, they visit several times a day.. tons of good photo ops with them.

Thomaston, CT

Thanks WC.....

I'm not crazy about B&J but I'd eat it if I got it for free

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

It would cost me more in gas to get the cone than what the cone is worth. lol

- (but thanks.. ☺)
