Mindy, some of the older digitals did have a fairly small screen. Most of the newer ones have larger 2.5 - 3.0" displays that are a lot easier for some of us senior folks to see and use. I have exactly the same problem myself. A lot of cameras now don't have viewfinders at all, just a large view screen in the back. The autofocus features make up for a lot of past problems, too. Mine are always in focus now. Check with a store that has working cameras on display, and let the salesperson know the problem so they can show you the best models.

New Bees 01/01/11 friends - new and old...Come on in...
I agree with Al, Mindy. Let a sales person help you to find the best for your needs. They will know them all probably as ours have helped me in the past when I was looking.
Thanks Al and Mekos. I'll keep saving my pennies and ask and check them all out when I get enough of them saved.
Awwww, just got look and check them out to see which would be best for you and save that amount, OR tell relatives that is what you want for the next gift giving ocasion. Like anniversary or birthday or valentines day.......
mekos i pulled the book on this camera it is a hp phpto smart says in the book it may need tohave amay need software updates and driver also im going to have billy don look at this tomorrow i wish that would fix it i really like the camera and picture quality maybe billy can find out if it needs smothing.
Definately Nettie. I wouldn't throw it away. If you have a college near you sometimes they have a photo class there and those may have some ideas for you also. We have a photo place in Clemson next to the university and they do passport photos and sell camera supplies and such and they know quite a bit about cameras and can clean them, repairs also.
They could also recomend someone else for you if needed so I'd check around and see what you have available around you. If nothing else, get the address to the company and see if you could send it back for a good cleaning and check up. They will tell you what to expect on costs or where a repair shop would be in your area.
Nettie - A lot of times you can get free software updates right on line from the company's web site. I would check there first before buying anything new.

mekos lm just waiting for billy don to fenish what he is doing then he is comeing over and check this mess out. its all on line and i would just make a mess and probly ruin the camera and im tryiing to save it so ill wait for him the story of my life.the madtell men left a big glob of wires behind the puter they may have un pluged smothing baxk there between the desk and the wall. i should not mess with that mess or everything here may blow up.
I know the feeling Nettie. Happens to me all the time. I'm sure he can find it for you.
Hello.. Hope you all are staying warm.. We got a nice snow here but the weather is finally warming back up a lil.. Thank goodness..
Hey girl, I been wondering where you were.
billy don has been over he says the flash is all messed up no fast fix for that he said i need to just gieve it up and get a new camera says i can use it but will have to keep turning the flash off i can do that if i have to and ill have to.got my hopes up for a little while. ill try and come up with a new one come spring.
Sorry Nettie, bummer! Well maybe you can find a good one cheap when you are ready to get it.
Nettie, hopefully you'll find a really great deal on one! I would love to have a new one too, but at least my old one still works. It would be horrible not having one.
I'm now starting a very few Tumbling Tom (red) tomatoes strictly as an indoor windowsill plants. They can also be grown as an outdoor hanging basket or small patio container for those of you living in warmer areas. This is a very small experiment for me using my new garden windows, but I will likely have a few plants to send out in a couple of months if somebody wants to try. That is, if they grow out okay.
Al
I have an upside-down planter, that I have never been able to get a regular tomato like beefsteak or better boy to do very well in. Do you think maybe the Tumbling Tom would work in it, since it can be grown in hanging baskets? If so, I would like to try one. Thanks!
rrm i bought to cp at lows
rrm or nettie: What is a cp? The plant that needs non-chemical water?
I know I saw on here someone taking about getting jugs ready to go outside. I am still not sure I understand how to do this. I have the jugs and need to know how to do it. Is it just things that need the fluctuating temps or any type of seed? (I just planted these seeds in pots and put them outside) What is the advantage to doing it in the jugs versus starting seeds inside?
Thanks!
cp's are carnivorous plants, such as a venus fly trap, etc.
From what I understand on the winter sowing in jugs, it is very beneficial for hardier plants, and such, as the seeds develop just as they would if they were growing in nature. The jugs are kind of like a mini hot house, but the seeds still get the temp cold and moisture, etc. that they need. The seeds sometimes sprout a little later, but the plants don't have problems with as many things as when sown indoors. You just stick the jugs out, and forget about them, basically. There is a whole forum here on winter sowing with a lot of really great people that can help and answer questions. I'm reading up on it now, too, wondering if I should try some.
Crit - I started my Tumbling Toms last week, they are just little green pips right now, about 6 of them growing in my window sill. I'll need about 6 weeks more time to grow them for transplant. Since I only need one or two, I'll adopt out the rest. I've had pretty good luck shipping them cross country. They are a dwarf plant, so should grow well in your Topsy Turvy or whatever container you use (should be at least a gallon or two).
Better Boy and Beefsteak are both large "garden" tomatoes that don't belong in small containers, choose "dwarf" tomatoes such as Patio or Tumbler instead for better results. This is my Tumbler from last year, grown in a two gallon pail.

mekos that littlle pitcher plant is up about two inches tall im sxcited . never grew one from scratch before may build my self confidence that doesn,t mean im going to get carried away. love nettie
al did you say you have bush tomatos. how tall do they get , i get tirde of staking and re staking and tieing them up wish i could find one that you just stake one time that grows well in arkansas. some one must have come up with smothing better than what i have to put up with. nettie
There's a lot of bushy tomatoes (determinate) to choose from. Depends on how many are available to take the heat in AR because I live in much cooler NY. This question you're going to have to ask a local garden center or County Co-op Extension unit (4H) for best answer.
A few of my shorter favorites are Celebrity, Bush Beefsteak, New Yorker, and Roma.
Al
the beefstak does good here a little to good they grow way to tall. al i would like some of the ark. travlers they say those do great here but i canlt them any where. guess i could try going through the ext. agent last time i used him was when i needed a plant id that took 6 weeks they sent them up to ua verry slow. ill try. thanks nettie
just poped back in to say good night going to be warmer in the morning need to do some things aroundoutside have some limbs broke off the camelia its full of buds going to be pretty looks like a big red rose bush love and hugs nettie talk later.
Morning folks - We finally made it, it's 5 degrees below outside for first time this season. It took the cat about 30 seconds to go outside, turn around, and come back in. I hope she remembered why she went out in the first place (she's getting old).
Okay - Back to tomatoes. Nettie, I stake ALL of my tomato plants, even the short ones. This gets the stems and fruits off the ground so they aren't as prone to ground rot, bugs, and animals. We have ground mice here that will eat most anything but they seem to love my tomatoes, will take quarter size chunks out of them which ruins every fruit. Staking the plants seems to deter them and other bugs and slugs. Yes, staking is a little bit of an effort, but in my particular case it's certainly worth the extra time.

I've gotten the Arkansas Travelers at Wal-Mart. I like them because they are pink and low acid. My DH can't eat too many of the regular ones because of the acid.
Al,
I would like to have a couple of your Tumbling Toms if you have enough. I would like to try one in the Topsy Turvey and one in a large pot.
Thanks,
Patti
tomatos grow so big here even the big cages can,t hold them i may have to make my own cages or smothing the wind will take them down don.t know how to stop that we are at the foot of a mountain and my garden just suckes it in. goob place to fly a kite grand kids love that. nettie

WooHoo! Nettie got her a new camera! We'll get new pictures to see! Very happy for you Nettie! I'm sure you'll love it!
Great going Nettie! Happy for you too. YIPPIE!!!
If you get the rechargeable batteries and a charger it will save you a bundle too. The batteries go fast but I keep 12 rechargeable batteries so 4 in the camera at a time and 8 ready for use. Then I have 2 disks to hold the pictures and will be able to take lots of pictures when I need to. I couldn't afford the throw away batteries, they die too fast.
The Nikon Coolpix are very nice indeed! We're all waiting to see new pictures!

On cameras, can anyone tell me, the lens that I have that I use with my old 35 camera, do any of them work with the newer digital cameras?
Sandi - Some, but not all, of the higher end Nikon and Canon SLRs will exchange lenses with the new digital models. There may be others. You really need to check with a quality camera dealer to answer this question.
Tons of really good camera equipment became virtually obsolete in the digital age, a sorry state of affairs for most of us veteran photographers. I personally spent thousands to keep my business equipment up to date, only to see most of it made useless in the digital age. I now carry a small pocket camera that is far sharper and a lot more practical than many of the fine Nikons I used years ago.
Al
Thanks Al! That's what I needed to know. I'll see if I can find a camera dealer somewhere around. I know what you mean about obsolete equipment, lol! I just dabbled in such, but still have a couple of thousand of dollars worth of various lens and such. It's just depressing that we spent all that money, and now can't use them. (Well, my old 35 still works great, it's just getting harder to find some place to develop the film, and the costs are getting too high!)
al i think it will be fine for my needs and it was 50 bollars off that was good now if i learn to use it im sure i can just take me some time i spent time takeing all the dust jackets off my books that i use all the time dau is takeing them to school for me and laminate them for me. my books get abused sometimes people don,t wash there hands. several were spliting in places. that should save them for a while. nettie
mekos have you talked to rrm how long boes she think she will be down . this thread is really long could use a new one . hand got tirde just getting back over here. i talk alot im sure you have seen that love all of you for putting up with me . nettie
