New Bees 01/01/11 friends - new and old...Come on in...
We did that yesterday after DH got home from work. Longear feed, Chicken feed and Birdfeed from Tractor supply, they love to see us come in th store...
Cha-ching!! They have $$ in their eyes do they...
Yep, they sure did. We just go there when we are out of feed, or close to it. But I love Tractor Supply, they have some great things.
I love our new TS store came right here in town just two months ago before Christmas. They replaced an old grocery store that wasn't doing too well. We also have a Walmart and Lowes, but TS has many valued items the others don't or wouldn't even think of carrying. I don't know whether they carry a seed rack or bedding plant supplies, it's not Spring here yet. We do get seeds from WM and Lowes about March 1st.
Al
They do have seed racks Al, and some plants but not a lot , down here anyway. You will love it.
It is one of my Favorite stores next to Lowes..☺☺
bill gets horse feed bird feed and stuff like that at southerlands best plsce here to get it, he says its five dollars a sack cheeper than most places. do you have a southerlands store in your area. nettie we have a real old horse she can only eat feed for old horses and it is hioh cause they know you have to have it . now al are you trying to be funny i would think youy could drop by and pick up somne plants and bird food it might be worth it to you.

I think we're in the northerlands compared to most of you folks. LOL
Al
al you are wright im sorry. if i had all your snow i would go crazy. i hope you have a store where you can get bird feed on the cheap. i love feeding them but hate the price of feed. love nettie bill said the bird feed was 9.99 for 50 lb. bag that is good for here these birds go through a bag in a week and a couple of days. they live in the fence rows in the winter. in the honeysuckle. bill leaves it on the fence so the birds have a place for winter.he has gone soft in his old age. i love him.our farm is like a funny farm. im going to bed good night love to all. nettie

Wow, Nettie, that's a good price on bird food. We usually have to pay about twice that here, but I stock up when it goes on sale for half price. Then only have to store it for a while. But at least that way I can afford to keep feeding them.
Nettie, that's what we pay at Costco I think. Haven't bought any yet this year - maybe this weekend. That's the best price around for sure.
Kelly, do you still have tons of heirloom seeds?
Al, have you decided which maters you're planting this spring? Mine did great that you sent last year!

I'm still working on my list Sandi, I have several to choose from including several I got from our local Cornell Co-op. I have a huge supply of the Wisconsin 55 which is a really great "normal" OP tomato from Jungseed.com and a few Tumbling Tom (red cherry) for those growing in early containers. If anybody needs seeds, I can share now, otherwise I'll be growing out some plants later in the Spring.
I'm glad your New Yorkers grew well in WY, your summers must be similar to ours in NY.
Some people in warmer climes I sent plants to didn't do as well. I still have leftover seeds for the New Yorkers, too.
Al
Al, I would love to try some seeds of anything you have plenty of, as the NY toms did so well last year. Saved seeds from them, but would love to try some others from seed also. Didn't plant any cherry toms last year so plan on some this year, and generally, just wanted to know what does good for you there. I did start some Beefsteak from seed last year, and they did good also, but had a problem with some of them catfacing. Don't know anything about growing maters, but from what I read, that's what the problem was, anyway, and apparently, that's more a weather related problem, and not something I did wrong, teehee! Might even try some heirlooms this year too, since I was gifted some of those seeds ;-)
Catfacing is almost "normal" in a lot of Heirlooms - just their nature. I do still have heirloom seeds Sandy, little of this and a little of that - lol. I like to experiment with different things until I find something that works in this crazy climate;o)
Last spring a nice DG member in San Antonio sent me plants of a new hot-set tomato aptly named Phoenix which I and some friends trialed in our gardens. It did reasonably well, well enough I was able to search out the somewhat pricey seeds to start and grow more this spring. It is a hybrid so no seed saving, and hopefully the $ of seeds will come down. This is the first year seeds are available and seem to be in somewhat limited supply.
lol!! Leave it to you to want the 'spensif" ones! Figures that they would do better there, always seems that way! That is definately one of the advantages to not living in the desert, lol! We just have to start everything inside months before we can put them out! lol! Thought that I would start figger'n what all I want this year tho :-) I don't know how you find room for all them veggies!
I don't think about planting tomato seeds until the middle of March, then wait to transplant in late May, Memorial Day week. Okay - I do have a new garden window installed so I can plant one very small windowsill tomato in February. The window is mostly taken up with other transplants, so I don't have much room to spare.
Al
You are a Plantaholic, can't get another plant in my window either....
Well, I just put a shelf unit in front of my office window, so have some room, (this week anyway ;-) ) which is why I'm trying to decide how much room I'm gonna need for this spring, lol! Hard to believe that we would find plant-a-holics here, lol! Only have so many south facing windows, so space is at a premium there.
Ya Think???? hahahahaha!
[quote="skellogg"] I did start some Beefsteak from seed last year, and they did good also, but had a problem with some of them catfacing.
What does catfacing mean?
I don't normally plant veggies so when mine started doing that last year, I got on line and looked up what they were doing and found out what it was, lol! But our summer and spring were unusually cold last year for us, so I am guessing that was the cause, although, I never check my dirt, but can't imagine the nitrogen was high, since our dirt is primarily red clay and rocks, lol! And since I don't have a garden spot, so to speak, I planted mine in several areas, and they all catfaced, in all the locations I had them.
Thanks for the info. In all my years I have never heard that term. Hmmmm
rrm i bought to cp at lows they had to be planted hope i got it wright had the how to in the box with them and soil moss everything if i got it wrong dh will be mad at me.anyway i tried woman said they would be gettig more in she said they were hard to keep in stock the children like them. going to keep them on the window sill until spring. love nettie
You are going to love it. Water it with rainwater or distilled water. No city water. I have a well, I use it...
did you mean well water would water from a dug well work where we live is a old sschool was at one time we have several old doug wells, probly some we don.t know about i think they would have problems with a wellb ehey would just go to another sight and dig another one, they ased large rocks to cover them up,gpaw useto haul rocks and fill them in he kept the one at the side of th house rocked the sids on it and made a concrete slab for the top of it he used it to water cows and chickens not deep enough for much wattering alot of stuff. im sure jf we ever start removeing lafge flat rocks we would find more wells. i leave rocks alone. bill would hurt me if i found a open well and he had to fill it in. nettie just thought of smothing how about pond water.
This message was edited Jan 7, 2011 5:35 PM
Yes, dear as long as you DON'T add chemicals, cause that is what kills them. Yes, that would work too. Well water and pond water, no chemicals. You got it girlfriend....
im goinbg to bed i haxe to get up in the morning need to clean this house. love and hugs nettie.
Okay Special Friends, here's my seed list just for you. I just spent half a day packaging up all this stuff all ready to send out. Free, trade, swap for stamps, whatever...
Last year's tomatoes packed 20+ seeds each. Most all of them grew well here in Western NY (short season), I can't vouch for elsewhere. All tomato seeds are from leftover commercial packs, not home grown.
Bush Beefsteak
New Yorker
Roma VF
Rutger's Jersey
Wisconsin 55
I also have a large quantity of pretty much generic flower seeds grown with huge success right in my own cottage type garden last summer.
Tall Marigolds (crackerjack type)
Short Marigolds - Orange
Sunflowers (of every description)
Tall Zinnias Mixed Colors (California type)
Just give me a holler in my private D-mail if you can use any of this stuff and I'll be ready to send out next week or so.
Al
I'm now starting a very few Tumbling Tom (red) tomatoes strictly as an indoor windowsill plants. They can also be grown as an outdoor hanging basket or small patio container for those of you living in warmer areas. This is a very small experiment for me using my new garden windows, but I will likely have a few plants to send out in a couple of months if somebody wants to try. That is, if they grow out okay.
Al
rrm we are getting snow i know i didn,t ask for smow. hope it melts off tomorrow or tonight would be better.i don,t like snow. guess what one of my little cps is up looks like a baby pitcher plant. thats cool. if the other one makes it that will be a miracle. nettie

HI HONEY, I'M HOME!!!
You just won't believe it but secret Santa came to see me today and here I am. God bless you santa! I was planning to be back in a week or so anyway but that sweet little red suited man brought me a subscription today. :-)
We got 6&1/2 inches of snow last night and sleeting now with another inch or so to go before morning. DH couldn't work today or tomorrow. They closed till roads are better.
Hi nettie, I sure did miss you guys. Puppies are growing and getting fat and sassy.
Wes is doing better and getting stronger and the Dr. can't explain what is going on. They said he couldn't live with dialysis and he is better than he has been in over a year. I know what it is. The power of prayer! It sure does work! My sweet little Kaylee has been very sick but she is much better too. I count my blessings everyday for my health and family and wonderful friends! Bless you all.

WooHoo! Welcome back Jan! We missed you! I'm still praying for little Kaylee, Wes, and you, and you are so right! The doctors and medicines can be great, but just can't compare to the power of prayer! God is great!
AMEN!
And I do appreciate all the prayers.
I am happy to be back. Sure missed everyone. Secret Santa is pretty wonderful too! :-)
Glad you all are doing good. Glad everyone had a great Christmas time and New Years.
