Right, Victor, I never thought of that. But your regular hellebores don't smell the best, either.
What have you ordered or would like to 2010/2011 #10
Got my 2011 Thompson & Morgan seed catalog yesterday!! Time to select seeds for next years beds. Maybe do a little winter sowing.
Loved the color on Emperor, Weeze....sounds like you got some nice bargains!
Okay I just bought a plant for a lot of $$$. More than I would for one plant but it is something I have wanted for a long time and I did not buy any fall plants or bulbs this year so I splurged on a yellow peony. Not the prettiest name mind you, 'Bartzella', but it is a pretty flower. I will not get to see it in my garden for at least a year or two most likely so I decided I could not put off getting one any longer. Here it is in plantfiles: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/55517/ It will hopefully live in the blue/yellow garden.
One of my neighbors has Bartzella up against her porch. It must have had 200 blooms on it this year. The most gorgeous thing! Good buy!
nice pat - i have looked at that in the past - celeste broke down and got one last year.
I hope mine survives and has half as many blooms polly. I have been looking at this peony for a long time so now it is coming here to live. I hope celeste can post a pic of hers or let us know how it is doing for her now. These are a cross between a herbaceous and tree peony but as far as I can find out they are treated and grown like the herbaceous ones.
It really is absolutely wonderful. I will get a pic of my neighbors next year.
I just ordered 4 new blueberry bushes from Garden Crossing. Got emailed of their sale. I got Arlen, Duke, Berkeley and Legacy, none of which I already have (I'm a blueberry addict).
That Bartzilla is the one Thom got that amazing deal on (last year I think)
Oh, and I was going to tell you Pat, the neighbor that has it positioned it so it faces East, and would get morning sun, up to about 11AM or so, I would guess. I'm surprised at the amount of bloom with the limited sun. She's had it a few years.
I have been looking at it to buy for awhile, and the price scares me, which is silly, since I just slap all the peonies around wherever and they do fine.
I caved for Bart last year Pat, so don't feel bad!! LOL
did it bloom this year celeste?
Oh, definitely don't feel bad, feel good. It's a forever plant. Really a good investment as far as plants go, more like buying a shrub.
No, it didn't but I can wait. ^_^
Oh okay not indulgent, a smart shopper we are, yes? ^_^
I am really excited about it, and even in part shade it does that well, wow. I hope you get a bloom or twenty next spring pixie. Looking forward to a pic of the first ones. I will tell DH this is an investment in a landscape shrub that will last longer than us, that will work right?
Nice get on the blue berries. We have some wild ones around here but the critters get them before me usually. Would like some cultivated ones some day, maybe in the spring.
I think I paid $75 and that was a good deal, I waited 2 years for the price to drop but I couldn't hold out any longer. :))
Received the Deer Resistant order a bit ago.
I remember when Thom got that one.
It is a cross between tree peony & herbacus peony, one reason there are so many blossoms. Good warm weather yesterday so we finishd cutting back the siberian foliage. It is tough enough now so I would hate to do it in the spring. No work this morning because of the rain so hope to do more weeding tomorrow.
i picked up a yellow tree peony and hoping that will keep my away from braz - use the saved cash on jm's!
Nice try, Bill. No cigar.
Didn't Monica say that?? ^_^
Good one!
I'm drooling....would love a yellow peony.
good one indeed!
That's a beauty ngam!
excellent one Victor!!
Any recommendations for a vine I can get to climb up a spruce/pine that lost it's lower limbs? I know climbing hydrangeas won't harm a tree, anything else?
Trumpet vine? I see them growing up trees in the wild. Wisterias go up trees too.
Clems, or MG's?
I think that you want to stay away from trumpet vine. It will spread.
a wisteria would look good might take several years to bloom though
Don't do trumpet vine unless you don't mind digging out new ones and roots far from the original site. I made that mistake and years later still find one popping up occasionally. If enough sun gets in under the branches a honeysuckle or two would not harm the tree. I have a 'Gold Flame' honeysuckle planted in part shade planted under large limbed up oaks that blooms and does well. Alternately you could plant some flowering shrubs if there is room.
Not easy. Will be dry under there so you will have to water regularly.
I've been trying to kill the wisteria here for the past few years....it keeps popping up. I'd go with the hydrangea......
If you go with wisteria, try an American cultiver rather than Chinese. They bloom earlier and do not take over the earth.
Earlier meaning younger, not earlier in the season.
Scored another coup: Forever and Ever hydrangea and pysocarpus Diablo $6.60 for both at Lowes. Got JM Viridis at HD for $20.00
Just caught up with this post...
My 'Bartzella' stories goes like this:
Not last fall, but the fall before, I was at a local garden center, one of my favorites. They were having a 50% off sale. I was walking by all of their 1 gallon perennials, and I see the unmistakable leaves of a Peony...on closer inspection I see the tag on the container, ITOH Peony 'Bartzella.' I squeaked. I asked the owners son how much the peonies were, $9.99, and 50% off of that, so they would be roughly $5 each. There were 3 left...so I grabbed all three. So I ended up with 3-1 gallon sized ITOH 'Bartzella' for under $20! They didn't do much last year but grow...which is to be expected. This year, holy bajeepers. I am trying to find the pics I took of the whole shrub, all 3 of them, and can't seem to find them. On average, each clump at a complete 2 years in the ground, had about 20-25 flowers, each. I can only imagine what 'Bartzella' will look like in a few years!
Here is a pic of one flower from one of the Bartz...just to get you ready for what beauty they offer and give to the garden!
wow! what luck
Beautiful Thom!! Thanks for sharing!!
i think i remember that story thom - nice!
Wow what a deal! You were very lucky indeed. I paid considerably more but looking at that pic it will be worth it if it grows as well as your three. It is all tucked into its new home for the winter. It was a good sized root with several eyes at the crown so I hope to see a bit of green next year, maybe a bloom if I am really lucky.
