Hey Susie, glad to have you here! We talk about what ever we want to. No set conversations here. Flowers, birds, crafts, traveling, pets, kids...

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Welcome Susie, we just talk about "stuff", anything.

rvnsbrk, thought more about your sea shell idea, what if I put sea shells in concrete? Like making stepping stones....I wouldn't need as many shells, guess I could add stain glass tiles in a beachy colors or design. Anyone got any suggestions?

Debra, I got some seeds from the coneflower that looked like a pom pom for you. I know nothing about collecting seeds so all I can say is I tried...LOL

I hope I got on this weekend and thanked you Faye, I am so nuts anymore I never know if I am repeating myself or not...LOL Got the seeds and can't wait until they are growing. I love those pics you posted of those hibiscus, I am so excited.

Have lots of buds or at least had may be the correct term on my brugs. We had horrible winds all day long! I did plant some things but I am just worn out from fighting the wind, and sitting the pots back up, I even made tags. Had to stop at 2 and help DH, we have a booth at an antique mall and I had to help him load and unload stuff. It has been kind of fun. It is a great place, I love walking around, haven't bought any thing....yet...LOL

Back to work tomorrow so I guess my time is short...LOL but only 4 days this week....yeah!

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

Happ the stepping stone idea is great. The glass would add some color. Let me know if you want to go in that direction. I think I have bags of shell around here that would work as well as glass for the mosaic. If I can find it all... So tired of moving things around to make room and then losing everything forever

This is my Peach Suavoleans this morning...

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

Well No Kids Here So I Guess everythink else is a go ;) going to be a busy day mostly this morning so will stop back in later to ask a couple questions ???

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Juanita. Love the seat there by the brug! Does she smell as good as she looks?

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

Yep LK she does smell good. I traded for that bench awhile back. Gave the lady a bed clean up got a nice, antique bench for it. I sanded it and painted it, but i need a new cushion. I can never manage to get it in before a rain and then there is the fact that the sprinklers run on it everyday. :0)

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Cushions can be replaced. We replace ours every couple of years due to the weather and sun! Or save the cushion, and re-cover it yourself! Sometimes it's cheaper that way!

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

Wind very very strong over 650 without power & they say we might still loose ours so I Need to go batten down the hatches back later .

susie

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

Be careful, Susie. We don't want to see feathers flying from your critters either.

all the critter Are same & Sound took all my plants off the stands & Set them on the deck so they won't get blown over . have to ask where do you find the seeds on the brugs ???

HERE IS MY DAHLIA "SORBET"

Thumbnail by deejay9
(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

IF the brugs set a seed pod, you will know it! it will be a huge l ong seed pod. But they seldom set seed pods, so if you get one, consider yourself lucky. They have to be cross pollinated from another plant from what I have heard.
You can go tot he brug forum, and ask more questions there if you want.

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

I have the name, just don't know it right now.
This is darker red than the picture shows.
It is really a big dahlia bloom.

Sue, this is what a brug seedpod looks like!

Thumbnail by taters55
(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

do you remove the dead flowers or just leave them to fall off .
I trully do not think i will have any seed pods for they have nothing to polinate with at this time anyway :))
LK Are those on your plants ??? WOw where do you plant them all ???

well guess i will go to Bingo you all have a great evening .
susie

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

No, that is not my plant with the seed pods! i wish they were.
This is my angel garden. I have 32 plants, with which only two plants have bloomed so far. I planted them last year, and I thought for sure I would have more blooms by now, but not so far. I lost most of my plants last year, even though I took cuttings, they did not do very well over last winter. So I started from scratch again this year! Some day I will have several blooming all at once! Well, maybe I can dream!!! LOL!
This is my raised bed, where I have most of my brugs. I have 10 in pots, and they are just growing. I think it has been way too hot this year for anything to bloom!

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

LK I wish you were here right now. I have 3 or 4 brugs that are blooming or about to bloom. It is really smelly out there at dusk. When the wind blows the right way it even drifts in my office window. How cool is that??

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

I picked these yesterday. Debra you out there?? I think you may be the only person that knows what these are. :0)

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

their are not pears :( maybe comquats ?? bad spelling early morning

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Those look like mango's? Yummy! You grow them?

Susie, don't work too hard. Do you still have your peacock's? How is your dad doing?

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Beautiful pic Linda Kay, a perfect Angel garden....Everthing really looks lush.

I know what those are those are paw paw fruit aren't they?

Speaking of brugs and seed pods, our mia AuntB use to pollinate them herself not relying on nature, course you need two brugs, but did she call it doing the jiggle or something like that?

I have 3 in bloom and they are really pretty even tho some are burnt from the strong winds on Monday. This makes twice this summer right as they are trying to open the winds kick up to 45 mph! But the blooms hung on but like I said a little crispy on the edges.

Hope everyone missed the tornados and downpours and just got some needed rain.
Had a dinner with a gardening friend and we spent 2 hours laughing at ourselves and the silly ness we pull in the garden. Just had a great evening.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

No rains or wind here, It went east of us!

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

They are saying the storm will stay south of kc proper, I live way north in unproper I guess...LOL so I probably won't get much rain if any.

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

Happ you win the prize whatever that is for knowing Paw Paws. Too weird that we have lived here over 20 years and I never knew that we had them until this Spring when some bloomed by the driveway. Well low and behold my amazement when I started looking the other day and found fruit! Some had fallen off already but the critters hadn't gotten to it so I broke one open and ate it on the spot. DH isn't too fond of it. Everything is a texture issue with him :0) Ate 3 of them yesterday and some of the others are getting ripe. They are really very unique in flavor. kind of like a mango and a banana wrapped in one. The ones we have here are on the small end of size, so they are mostly seeds. I am saving some of the seeds , but it says that you can't let them dry out. I'm thinking of wrapping them in damp paper towels in a siploc in the fridge. If anyone wants any to try to start let me know. They would have to stratify before they would sprout.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Do they require a good freeze for them to develope?
Like Lilac bushes, I have been told they won't grow here, because it does not get cold enough?

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

I'm thinking they would need the freeze LK. I can look into it to see if they would grow there. They are a native tree. The Native Americans used to eat them to prevent scurvy. Geo. Washington loved them chilled as a dessert.

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

Rats, I haven't been on for 2 days and look what I missed. Spent yesterday cleaning and cleaning out (ugh) and took DH to a Dr appt today. Me second recognizing the Paw Paws and think they taste like a really sweet banana too mixed with something I can't quite put my finger on. First time I saw or tasted them, they were growing wild on the banks of a river at a campground we stayed in WV. Noodling around on vacation this year we found a few plants on the VA/NC line when we were walking Mickey one evening. That was in June, no fruits yet, but I got so excited when I recognized the foliage. DH said he used to see them a lot more, especially this time of year when he was scoping out a site to hunt deer or turkeys.

LK, your raised garden is awesome, lots of hard work putting that one together. We'll have to fix you up with lots of Morning Glory vines to grow on your fence next year.

Edited to add: My SIL in Ft. Worth said if the storm had gone 15 miles in a different direction, her commute to downtown Dallas would have been at a standstill in rush hour traffic. Her old neighborhood in Arlington was hit really hard.

CONGRATS HAPP FOR TH E GUESS >

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

I have never eaten a paw paw but looked at them in books alot. I would like to have one and you would think since they are native here I could find one of size to buy, but nope not here...LOL DH had one at work when a guy brought some in and he really like it. I have to agree with your husband tho on texture, I don't know if I would like them or not. I can't eat yogurt because it is slimmey to me. DH said the one he had also was smaller and had lots of seeds, maybe that is the way they are?

OK you guys I have told you the stories of the black lab Sam who eats the strangest things.......well I have a new one, it is really funny, and the bassetts will watch him and then they will try it but they end up spitting...rofl. Sam is eating pears. I am guessing about 5 pears a day! DH picked a pear off the tree and ate it and threw the core down on the ground and the next thing we knew Sam thought well if they eat it, it must be ok.....well I am guessing he really likes them....rofl. Sam is a sweetie but has to be the strangest dog I have ever had about eating things...LOL

No rain today, better rain tomorrow or I am going to have crispy plants cause I haven't watered! Got home late last night and tonight was take Mom to the store night....which always takes awhile...

See FOTV, nothing good ever comes from cleaning...rofl.....Can't imagine the traffic Ft. Worth. The storm came really close to her if it hit Arlington. I just want some rain, no hurricane...LOL or tornado.

Susie, you had one long day in the garden! That is a lot of plants to do. Sounds like fun tho.

Where is Debra?

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

She last posted on the 3rd! Sure hope she is not in the path of these storms, she may be with out power?

That is a lot of pears for a dog to eat, better make sure they don't make him go potty too much! :)

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

I was wondering about Debra too.

I'm thinking I might start some of the seeds in some window boxes and if they sprout in the Spring I can dig them and send them around to anyone who wants to try it. LK I still need to research your question.

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

Finally!!! I have been waiting for these to bloom for weeks now. Long story short, I collected some seeds from a client last year. She had these all over the place and didn't know what they were. She was great at buying seeds and then just tossing them all over the ground. ;0)

I had no idea what they were, but since they were red I thought I'd try it. When I was going through my seed stash to see what I could try for the heck of it, I came across these. They sprouted and got bigger and set buds and I still had no idea what they were.

Debra will be so proud of me. My new addition.....

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

Now I want seeds from any of these I can get. They grow here!! They smell good. I'm going to plant them everywhere next year. :0)

On to brugland this morning. The Peach is still going, Xena opened last night and so did Coral Glow.

Thumbnail by rvnsbrk
(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Oh, they are so pretty! Please tell me what the tiny white flower is in the middle? And that red flower looks like a mandevilla? Is it a vine?

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

LK the white flowers at the bottom are gaura. It is a biennial often sold as a perennial. This was was looking bad and after I cut it way back and it cooled down some it came back like you see it now.

The red flowers are 4 o'clocks. I can't believe it took me all summer to figure that out. Only a couple are open right now, but it is loaded with buds so it should be kind of showy maybe tonight or by the end of the weekend. I have been out looking at seeds all morning. :0) I will never get anything done this way.

Here is the information on the Paw Paw trees:http://www.crfg.org/pubs/ff/pawpaw.html

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

That is a beautiful red four o clock! Love that color!

paw paw trees requires a minimum of 400 hours of winter chill. That is only 17 days, and we get that here, so maybe they would grow here? Send me some seeds, and I will get them planted and see what happens?

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

Gotcha LK!
