I wondered the same thing when I scattered the seeds. Some of the packs said they reach maturity in 70 days, so basically I counted backwards from our first frost which traditionally doesn't hit til late October or early November. These pics are from today.
She's about to...53
Beautiful blooms, beautiful Baby and many friends all on one page! Doesn't get much better than that.
Nita, if ever you want more of the Pear Cacti, just let me know. Want those MG's! and all the different Angel Trumpets I can get.
What a sweetie baby! Beautiful pics of so many flowers! Gotta love the daylilies, you are lucky it bloomed for you and you didn't have to wait a whole year that would be awful! Do you leave the seedheads on the sunflowers for the birds? I grew some one year for my parrot who would not eat one of them. I would hand him one, he would take it and throw it down, I would hand him one from the seed store and he would eat it. I did this about 20 times trying to trick him.....he knew the difference but wouldn't eat the ones I grew. I know I am not a great cook but geesh! rofl.
Debra, I don't know anything about those plants, but if you don't want it and you think it will survive from roots, I will try it. I am not a great plant doctor I will warn you.
I love the pics of MG's but do they reseed other places? Right now I am having a horrible time with 2 kinds of vines (wild not mg).
I have lots of fence rows.
We had horrible storms last night, really high winds, lightening, thunder, HAIL, lots of water! Horrible.
Alot of the pots were blown over but the ones that weren't were full of water. More rain tonight, and tomorrow, then a beautiful weekend....yes! I worried about the brugs cause some of mine are loaded with blooms. When I left for work it was still raining and pitch black so I had to wait until I got home to see the damage....but, it doesn't look like I lost any blooms cause the brugs blew over so that was a good thing.
I have lots of prickly pears also! Yellow blooms, orange blooms.
There are so beautiful when they bloom. I moved to San Antonio from Colorado with a St. Benard. The catcus were blooming I decided to take her for a walk, well we got a little too close to the cactus with her tail got tangled up and I almost never got her loose. I had nail clippers with me so here I am trying to keep her still and not wagging her tail while I clipped....rofl.
Oh, that is not good! Those little stickers stay in forever!
They didn't get her skin cause her fur on her tail was sooooo long and thick but it sure was a mess. That poor dog did not understand SA weather at all! I always thought all dogs could swim.....NOT. I took her to the lake and we walked out, course she was really tall and big but the goofy dog lifted her legs to lay down and almost drowned! rofl. She was slapping the water (her front legs were coming clear up out of the water) and holding her head up high and looked so funny! I took her back in where she could just lay in the edge and the water and she was happy. Hadn't thought about her in a long while.
LOL! I thought all dogs could do the dog paddle too! That must have been so funny!
There's a flock of American Goldfinches eating the Cosmos & Sunflowers I winter sowed. Both have been blooming their heads off for weeks. If the birds don't beat me to it and the heads on the newest Sunflowers have time to mature, I'm planning to harvest the seeds and share them with the group.
OMG, one year when I was working I mentioned to hubby I wanted a Sunflower "patch". I'd saved seedheads from the previous year and had no idea there were enough for him to plant an acre...now that was a real show stopper when they bloomed...we had neighbors and passers-by stopping to take photos. That was the one and only year I seriously thought about going into Sunflower Oil production...LOL
No rains are in the forecast here but we could use it. Our best bet in the near future is Hurricane Earl that's supposed to either skirt or hit the Outer Banks of NC Thursday or Friday before it heads up the East Coast. We're 6 hours inland --- you're a lot closer, Faye -- and usually have rain bands from a huge storm like that. The Outer Banks have been our favorite place to vacation since 1999 and have only missed going back the last two years.
Well, shoot. I missed the doggie antics. You always have the best recollections, happ.
Oh I beat that field of sunflowers was something else to see....
When driving in Kansas I have seen beautiful fields of really really short sunflowers with the biggest heads you ever saw. They look like the head will pull the whole plant down.
Speaking of which the storm broke a bunch of my dahlias that were blooming.....so sad. I thought I had them tied better than that but the winds were pretty strong. Should of left them on the ground.
Your picture wasn't there when I posted about the sunflowers...that is really beautiful.
Once you get as old as me you will have alot of stories also...rofl. Back in my day....rofl.....
Oh Joyce, I just giggled while visualizing your poochs' antics. We still have not gotten any rain, here in Derby. We did get the wind, I lost a bud off wretched mess and a bud off of maya and three Hibiscus buds and a branch and the w whole side of leaves off my just now Y'ing cross seedling I grew ot from a seed from phicks. I grew that same sunflower and I think it was called chianti? But, I also grew a chocolate something and maximiliion and mammoth and the good old Kansas sunflower. My tithonia is done, and I too watched the goldfinches and birds eat the seeds, so I bagged the tithonia seed heads and saved those. I cut off the giant seed heads of the big ones out back, laid them on the ledge out front, came home today and it looks like something had a tasty dinner while making a mess of it. Here is one of our sunflowers, it has the Moonvine Alba growing up it everywhere..
Linda, I grew my first prickly pear yellow from a pad someone sent me on Multiply, it is now three years old, it is getting really big, no blooms yet.
Wow, that is a tall one! Don't know how long it takes prickly pears to bloom, but they usually bloom in the spring time, so hopefully next spring you will get blooms?
Cool pic, Debra. Way back when hubby and I married in July, I carried a bouquet of Sunflowers, Rudbekias, and Baby's Breath. Who knows what I'll eventually see from that area. Now that you mention it, there were a few Mammoths in the mix.
If anyone's interested in Zinnia seeds, I'll have an abundance of Candy Stripe. Colors have ranged from white...

To Orange and Yellow striped
Save some for me please!
I'll trade ya for some giant purple queens? ( Zinnia) My benarys Lime is finally setting seeds.
Debra love the pic, that thing is taller than then house eves...wow. We got lots of rain the last two days, infact I just tipped over an ee that was full of water and it is a huge pot. I don't put holes in them cause those pots come in and I don't want them leaking all over the place.
fotv, you (just or )got married in July? I surely didn't miss your wedding if it was this July? Heck I would of drove across country for your wedding. Course that is if I was invited.
Down to the 50's tonight and tomorrow night...wowzer, some of the tropicals aren't going to like that very well.
Off tomorrw but need to go to bed, dh is getting up at 5:45 and I doubt he does it quietly....rofl.
Debra, that is a lovely fence line! Look at all the green, and MG blooms!
It feels actually cold here this morning....LOL
Oh sorry about all your stuff getting blown over Debra, mom nature is sometimes just a little too rough. You have gone a long time without any rain.
I have a banana tree I think I pick up daily. The last go around I left it down since they were calling for storms yesterday. I am so lucky with the last bout that my brugs hung onto their blooms. So I should have a good display before long.
ON VACATION, hope everyone has a great day and weekend.
My turn to call u "Fruity" LOL, now if I don't get seeds of those above beauties, I just might call you something else. Love you lady!
Debra, sure hope your babies will spring back up for you.
Hugs, Faye
Hope everyone has a great weekend. Today was vacation and just a beautiful day.
Debra I bet your yard is just beautiful would love to see all your gardens maybe when I retire I will do one big road trip, wouldn't that be fun! Then as I go state to state you all can jump in the car with me and head to the next garden and pick them up.....umhhh since I am middle do I go east, west, north or south? Have to think about this....LOL
I went to a huge craft fair today with two long time friends. We always have a good time. Got to tell you guys what I am going to do. My garden room which is behind our house is kind of decorated like a cottage garden, but I think I am going to decorate it all tropical with beachy stuff since I have so many tropical plants and try to get that tropical feel back there. I can put my cottage stuff on the storage shed so all is not lost, but I think a beachy tropical feel in the middle of the US would be really fun. Heck instead of rock or brick path maybe I will make a sand one......well on second thought maybe not since I have a cat.....rofl.
Too funny Joyce!! What about a seashell path instead. :0)
rvnsbrk, That would be beautiful, great idea, cept, I would have to have alot of friends on the coast mail me some, or go on vacation, cause the only sea shells around here are sold in little tiny bags for a reallly big price. Speaking of at the craft show this guy had coconuts in the shell, laid them long ways, then I guess drilled small holes in the sides and top, stuck twigs in the holes to look like fins and then either glued eyes or painted eyes on one end, strung them up on fishing line and hung them. They were so darn funny depending on the shape of the coconut. 30.00! He had a coconut that was really pinched looking on the end and it looked like the fish was sucking or had a sour face (like ate something really sour) I about died laughing. Really wanted some but dang, 30.00 out of my range.
Thank you for the hibiscus seeds, Faye. Should I start these now or wait til Spring? Got you, LK, and Debra down for zinnias.
