New bees chit chat - come on in!! 06/07/2010
What a beetle :)
Yowzah! I'll trade you - I suddenly have a mess of squash bugs!
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=7882861
That lily is absolutely gorgeous, i'm jealous!
It's a Female Eastern Hercules Beetle.. The male has horns.. They're the largest beetle and completely harmless.. we went and showed her to my in-laws and then released her back outside near the woods.
No squash bugs for me! I found out what was/is getting in my garden.. not rabbits.. but an armadillo! He keeps making holes under potato stalks.. I'm assuming he's munching on new potatoes.. We spotted him about 500 yards up the road alive and kicking and then I realized it had to be him. The "drag" marks match his body and the little holes match his nose. uh huh.. now what do I do? He was gone for about 5 days and has been back the last couple of days. They are usually roadkill when you see them out here. I know they are nocturnal and it had rained hard all night the night before, maybe that's why he was out during the day.
mechelle i hate armadillos they can up root your whole garden in one night, not to mention a flower bed ive had them dig my lily bulbs up they ate half a madona bulb the only good armadillo is a dead onewe don,t kill animals but those things are on my hit list. good fense won,t keep one out i don,t do moles either cause they up root plants and dig in the roots looking for wqrms.
That is a beautiful Clematis Nettie... Do you know what the name of it is?
that is my favorite clematis dr. ruppel love the color sun or part shade and blooms spring and late summor for me.
lows did have them don,t know if they still do or not but you could check it out.
Thanks Nettie! There is a Clematis co-opgoingonatcubits... I'll see if they have that one! I really like it!
Nettie we started some electric wire around the bottom of the t-posts around my garden. Hope that will keep him out. Gonna turn it up full blast! LOL
Oh my nettie, those are gorgeous, the clematis and the second lily! I'm a HUGE fan of both! The only problem is I have such a HUGE wish list and such a smaller yard! lol What can ya do tho? haha
good girl hope you fry him if you don;t he will keep comming back to see you. love nettie
i have the ones with black spots i think they are lepord lilies. old lady gave them to me. love nettie they make tons of seeds. i can send you some if you like.
dh just came through here and said smothing about mowing i think it is raining the man has mowed the whole 10 acers no danger of haveing any wild flowers come up. nettie
Thanks RRM - I figured they had to be some kind of Amaranth...
Caught in the act!!! Great picture Mechelle
Loca, that is celosea plants,(probably not spelled right) they come in pink, yellow, orange, all pastel shades and colors. Then make lots of tiny black seeds. I started out with one plant and it dropped seeds and changed colors and now I have bunches all colors. I sent you some too nettie like the ones Locakelly has up there. Get about knee high. Here is a pink one, and the red wisteria tree in between the perriwinkle and it. The red wisteria is yours RRM, I repotted it in a pot by itself.
Now when they are open pollinated outside, will the baby plants be the same as the original parent plant? MITT, Where are you when I need you?!?
Loca, are you sure you didn't get a love lies bleeding? I think I sent you one in that same pile of plants. It was red and layed over from the plant. (drooped down)
left over lumber, and old used sink, gives me a place to put things i don,t wont in the house or in the junk pile there are things in that trash pile that could be re used. love nettie.
mekos i hope enid knows some of the day lilies we got from flowering child are starting to bloom hope she doesn,t miss that
Yep mekos - there is a love lies bleeding too and I haven't killed 'em yet...
What I know about Irises, the only way to get the exact same plant as the parent is to divide the rhizome when it makes new fans. If it's the same as Daylilies with the seeds, they do not come true to the parent plant even if it was fertilized with it's own pollen. Hopefully Mit will chime in for sure since he hybridized them;o) I cut my bloom stalks off after they are done so no seeds for me;o(
Sometimes if the bees pollinate them they wont have any seeds or it will be a low seed count, is what I have read.. I too cut all my stems off after they bloomed since I didnt pollinate them myself and I wanted mine to spend there energy producing more irises instead of seeds until I get them established..
loca i love your veg they look good make me hungry love nettie.
loca get you some seven dust them little buggers run them out of your gsrden.they will get on other things so kill them. love and hugs nettie
Thanks Nettie! Made me so hungry I had to come in and make sauce - lol...
I'm organic so no Sevin in my garden... except maybe my size 7 shoe on their little pin heads!
