Snow Lottery # 2 The Melt

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Deejay, I can understand if Daisy and daddy stand at the inside door that they want out. What do they do when they want in? Just stand by the door untill you open it? Aren't they a bit shy towards people? What is their favorite food? Don't they usually eat grain like chickens? Just curious about your sweet friends.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

so close but so far away.. yeah for your flowers Crissy!!!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Oh, yes! Crissy it is so nice to see your very pretty flowers. I don't have any spring bulbs.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

In the summer, though, it is nice to come back from town to the woods where it is at least 10 degrees cooler.

Had to bring DH over to see Frankie and Daisy. Thanks for sharing.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Neener, what does the north side of your house look like?

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

Yes they Actually will come to the door it is a slider & Disy will paste back & forth & Cry when she is ready to come back in . Frankie Guards the Door all day long then sits up on the deck rail to sleep at night he will not go to the barn . Daisy Now Stays in all night Now that she is Done laying eggs ,

Yes They eat Chick or Duck Grain , Mixed with Scratch & Crack corn , But For their treats they love Pancakes
made of cornmeal , oatmeal, & If you enlarge the picture you will see they get Lettuce , Peas, Boiled Eggs.

My Family Is In awe when they come out & Get to feed them they will eat out of your hand . Turkeys have always Got the Bad End of the Ax cuse my PUN , People thing they are Dumb , Well All I have to do is ask daisy if she wants her salad & She will go to the frig stand next to it NOT OPEN YET .
She is Blind in one eye But That dose not seem to slow her down at all . She was like that when I got her last summer. she & Frankie were both about a year old when I got them had never been outside a pen around Humans .
they have the run of the 16 acres But they stay up here by the house . they get along great with the ducks , cats dogs, peahen :)) & They love people . as long as you have food in your hands :) .

well you all have a great evening got to go feed & water :)))

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Gosh, they are really like pets! Is this the first year Daisy is laying eggs? How many eggs does she have? How long did it take for them to become so friendly?

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

I got them about last may I got frankie first & daisy about 3-4 wks later she had an egg about in Late june
But only had 1 but i had a duck that was laying eggs & One duck had 14 eggs & She got killed by something not sure what so i put about 4 of her eggs over to daisy & Daisy hatched out the ducks Plus she hatched sweetpea my penhen that I Have that is her up above :) & I Got her from the same lady I got daisy & frankie from :)))

She cannot believe how friendly they are :))) it is all in how you interact with any animal if you leave them lock up they will not be as friendly give them room to Roam & Eat grass Play with other critters & You hold food out to them treats they will follow you every where they love cat food .

Daisy is sitting on 19 eggs & So I Have to figure out a bigger Nest when they all hatch :))) So guess i will be off to the pet store for a play pen :)
you all have a great evening

(Zone 7a)

Looks like April 15th is out of the running. Unless you get more snow between now and the last of this pile.

Very cool about the turkeys and eggs!

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

I always love seeing Daisy and Frankie and Sweetpea. You're so good to your feathered friends, Susie, and it's wonderful how much enjoyment they bring you.

Yeah, my April 16th guess would have been better off for Wyoming. Still early though....March snow is not uncommon but hope like heck it by-passes us this year. We've had enough!

You should have gotten in on this deal.. I am only 4 miles north of Lucketts. :))

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

So are all those eggs Daisy's now?

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

I didn't see it before the deadline. :(

Sort of figured we're neighbors. Met another of our neighbors last week at the seed swap in Frederick.

We're in the woods too, but except down by the road where the plow made it deeper, ours is gone. Very sore from 3 days of yard work, but delighted to be back outside again.

DH commented a bit ago that we are NOT driving to Michigan to get any turkeys. Hope the story continues even after your snow melts.

Northeast, LA(Zone 8a)

Wow love the pictures of Sweetpea, Daisy, and her beau Frankie too. You need to start a thread and link it to this one when the babes are near born.

Juanita glad to see you have had a significant melt. I hope it all melts sooner than later. Gladly forgo the certificate for you to see green now. We hit high 70s today so blowing hot air that way. Problem is it just messes up our plants growth cycle. The fruit trees will bud out too early. We always have a cold snap right at Easter. Our normal this time of year is mid sixties with low fifties at night. It is almost 10pm and it is 70 degrees. Wishing everyone a beautiful, sunny and warm week.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

I would hate to see those turkeys go anywhere except where they are, "Turkey Heaven". That is a wonderful story and you should put it on paper with photos and sell it as a children book. It Takes a Village to Raise a Turkey. My suggestion for the title. LOL. This story made me smile and I think you are one special family, and if I ever come back as a Turkey, I know where I am going.

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

Well I Will say This With all the love I Have for these Critters They are messy to clean up after On MY Back Deck :( Where they want to be & The winter MONTHS Are the worse for I cannot HOSE It Off & I Have to Power wash Once a Month or every 2 months . But have to Hose it off daily :)

But for the most part they are very special to me . Daisy can now Lay in bed & Get 3 meals a day Plus drinks & Treats She is Queen , Sweetpea is sitting on the back of my chair as i type .

Oh Someone ask if the eggs were all daisy & Yes they are here are all the eggs she sat on last summer as my
surrogate mother one of the ducks & 2 peacocks but those 2 peacocks didn't make it not sure what happened.
but then sweetpea was born later .

I Think all animal Big Or small they can be great pets when we show Kindness .. & Animails Have Feeling The same as you & I . Last summer I Had a fawn here & I hope that she comes back this spring & remebers my Kindness . I see lots of deer print out back but not sure if it is her or not .
I will know if the feed ben has the lid off :))))

well lots to do you all have a great day .

LOLO!!! I just realized why you were asking. Today is your day. If we had had the rain we were supposed to get yesterday it would be gone. Next couple of days I think will tell the tale.

Victoria, TX(Zone 9b)

aww, shucks.

I see your forecast..
Us late-callers are out..

it was fun to watch, though.
(From here, where it's warm, sunny, and gawgeous!)

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Deejay, can you get a close up photo of Sweetpea? Is she a female peacock?

An idea. Could you make a little corral on the outside for your turkeys where they generally poop so it is in only one area? Or give them a very large liter box outside? We have wild geese here and we see what they leave. Turkeys must leave a lot more!

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

Does it make good fertilizer, like they say chicken poop does?

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

LOL venice. I would love to teach our chickens to use a litter box. :)
It sure would be helpful for us.

deejay, we have chickens, and our chickens will eat just about anything that we give them, and things that we don't give them!
The garden has to be fenced in during the summer, or they would help themselves!
I even had that to have some of my flower beds fenced in at one time, due to some that we had that loved to scratch in the dirt all the time. Everytime they saw me out there weeding, they would head my way.

kywoods, chicken poop needs to be aged before it makes good fertilizer. I read that it should be aged for one year.
I told BF that we need to start a composting pile for it.

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

Ahh, okay, like horse manure, gotta age it first.
That's a cute chickie!

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

Thanks, that is one of our Ameraucana's. Also known as the Easter Egg Chickens. They lay colored eggs.
No egg dying for me at easter time. Well no blue or green egg dying anyway.

Deejay, did Daisy have her nest inside last year also? Did all of the eggs hatch?

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

Daisy was out side all last summer when I got her Bus she & Frankie started mating first part of FEB & her 1st egg was Laid when she came in for her treat & Got INto sweetpeas Sand box I have for her. so will no barn yet to put them in I had to fix her up a Box But now since the snow has melted enough I gotthe dog house out of the snow & Brought it in the House for her . she has lots more room to move them around in there :)

as for penning them up they fly so they can perch on top of the deck rails or they perch uptop of my but they do play in the pens with the ducks . But frankie just likes to sit by the door till it gets dark then he perches up-top .

Hey NEET I HAVE till MIDNIGHT RiGHT FOR IT TO MELT :::))) so i have about 8-9 hrs yet :))))

well one more picture then i have to go feed kittens My Neighbor 's cat had Kittens in her room carolyn is handycapped & Cannot get around without her walker so i went over made a catbox out of a cardboard box for mommy & her to babies but mommy dose not have much milk for them so i'm trying to feed them 3 times during the day & Mommy can take over at night. . all My neighbor call me when they need a vet they cannot afford :))
Happy to say MOMMY Is Doing MUCH Better NOW after I went & Got Her 12 POUCHES OF MOist cat food Along with a bag of Iams cat food on hand Now & Baby suplement formula .

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Is Sweetpea inside? Does she come in and out the the turkeys?

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

Yes Susie you have until midnight. :)) I'll be sure to check before I go to bed OK??

Took a little break from packing and dusting and work stuff. I made a few kits for e Bay. Each one makes 10 little Easter baskets. I have a lot of card stock that doesn't work for my cards and this is a way to use it up. A fun project for the kids or grandkids. I always remember on Good Friday my Grandmother and I would always make something. Usually we dyed eggs, but we always did fun stuff that day. Just a thought. This is the link to the auction if anyone is interested.
