I won't drive in or on ice, but snow is definitely different. What's weird is in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in CA if it starts snowing a tinge they make everyone put chains on, they don't do that here, everyone just has to deal with it.
Stop and visit, talk all you want #34
Do they ever close roads, Crissy?
Ice? In zone 7b? The only ice we had in zone 7a was in our pipes!! Lived here all my life and never had frozen pipes and then move there (TN) and get frozen pipes? I talked to my friend in TN and he told me that they had an inch of snow. Tied that record of snow they had in 95? 93? I don't know, 90 something anyway...lol We were supposed to get some flurries today, but we didn't. It's cold, but no snow.
We went to Best Buy (again) today, and we had ice beside our car. Mind you we have the handicap placard for Krista. So we were in a handicap spot and it was the spot for a passenger. You know how you go in and you're too sweet? Like sickly sweet? Yea, that's what I did when I went in to ask if they'd put some salt down. Sometimes, most times, the squeaky wheel gets the oil, but this time, nah. Decided to use some honey...lots of honey...LOL
O.K. So the reason we go is because our laptop died right? We went ahead and got an HP (great deal on it!) and the guy likes HP and so do I, so what the heck. Now, when we got Krista's, I thought hers had some funky mouse or something. It never goes where you want it, it jumps all over the place, you get this rectangular box with an up arrow or down arrow and the mouse won't move off that thing. It's stuck basically. I've checked all the various settings and it's set like my desktop, but it just bounces all over and it drives me insane! Drives US insane. I asked when I had them upgrade Krista's to Windows 7 and it's not right, now this one is the same. What gives? Anyone?
We get home with it and I'M installing the Kaspersky Internet Security we already have. OH FOR PETE'S SAKE!!!! It's 2009, but that version doesn't work with windows 7, so I spent HOURS online finding the free update for it. I really don't like when they make it almost impossible to find.
boy I have to figure out something for this mouse! It's taking way too long to get it to where it needs to go! OH! And sometimes it changes the page when it passes over whatever. Annoying!
Celia they tell you on the news that it's not the best idea to drive, it has to get to a solid sheet of ice before they'll close the roads completely. It's mostly the bridges and overpasses, they will close those in a hurry. They post it on the morning news about school and business closures, and who is on their inclement weather policy, of course you need to know what your inclement policy is LOL
We don't get much snow, usually an inch or two in February, but we get a lot of freezing rain. Tennessee gets a lot of freezing rain too, above that gets snow, below 7b gets rain, unless some freakish thing comes through like what happened a couple weeks ago where it snows in Galveston Texas, Houston Texas, Dallas Texas, and New Orleans.
It takes alot to close roads here too. They won't close them unless you literally can't drive on them without sliding off. Far as I know that hasn't happened. We know several days in advance of a storm so the roads are pretreated. The only time the treatments don't work is when it reaches 0 degrees or colder in actual temps.
Our roads are pretreated every time there's freezing rain and yet those bridges and overpasses freeze up like nobody's business.
Same here with the bridges and overpasses. It's because they don't have heat from the ground to keep them warmer. They are exposed to the weather so will be the first to freeze.
And I always chuckle to myself when I read the sign "Bridges freeze in cold weather" or whatever it is they say. They close roads all the time up here. We're right off the interstate and then you have the highways that get a lot of blowing and drifting snow. Then you have back roads, which are going to be 10 times worse because they aren't asphalt, they're the tar and pebble, so you hardly see the lines after a few years. Some of the back roads (county roads) are asphalt (or black-top), but that's the "rich" counties, not this one...lol..
It doesn't get cold enough in TN to have roads that freeze. Not where we were anyway..over by Chattanooga. You might have some freezing rain, but that's an almost never occurrence. We had maybe a 100th of an inch of snow the whole time we lived there. Now where our house was, we were "down in the valley", so we had roads that would flood in the spring. Those roads would be closed. Heck, they closed school all the time in the spring and fall because of rain. Regular old ordinary rain. I never did understand that. And the panic that the rain brought...lol I thought it very weird.
Crissy, you're just used to CA, come on up here to IL and see how snow is done!! And freezing rain...which reminds me. I was watching a TiVo'd program...I think you spell her name Giada. She was doing Secret Santa's. Anyway, on the beach was a sand snowman. It made me sad. I don't mean to be rude, you know that. It's just that I can't imagine growing up and not ice skating or sledding or making snow angels and snowmen!! All right here at home, not packing up the car and driving somewhere, doing it all right here. I don't know. Christmas isn't Christmas without snow and cold weather!!!
We get road closures all the time. The canyons get closed regularly almost every year. Icy roads are something we deal with but everyone forgets how to drive on them. lOL it's like..."This wasn't like this in the summer!" Why did I slide off the road?!"
Darrell got his Xmas present early this year. It is from my DB in OR from his FIL. They are cleaning out his apt. and storage unit and moving him to a care center. This boat was in storage for many years. It needs to have some repairs done to it but Darrell knows how to fix it.
I lived 2 1/2 hours from the beach. I was right in the middle of that huge valley you see on the maps, map Modesto, CA. It gets down to the teens in the winter and up to 110 in the summer. It was a huge desert before people found that it's great for farming.
Oh poo, I forgot what I was going to say LOL

That's the desert for you.
Maybe more snow today.
Yea, I wouldn't like living in Nevada or Arizona desert, I just don't see the beauty that a lot of people see. Not that there's beauty in Modesto, I haven't ever seen that either.
Why I know people move to the desert of AZ, is for the dry air. The problem in TN with having teens, was that maybe it hit a teen in the night, but daytime temps were up in the 50's or higher.
I love that boat Celia! I have one, not quite like that. What do you call those things? The masts? Something. My boat is wood and then strung with string. It was made by a prisoner. My maternal grandparents lived in FL for awhile and they lived near a prison. My grandfather knew a guard, so he one, my mom saw it and wanted one for each of us. It's a pain in the rear to clean. That picture above, the Christmas tree upstairs? The antique dresser next to it has it sitting on top of it.
We're in a small rural area. For the most part, locals remember how to drive. You get onto the interstate and people (some local, some not) fly by you and end up in the ditch. duh. We also have some dangerous intersections that I'm not getting. We've had 2 fatal accidents in as many weeks. A grain truck blew thru a stop sign and slammed into the drivers side, killing the woman driving. Then another semi decided he didn't want that exit and was turning around on the road? Who would do that??!! A man, a Red Cross Volunteer didn't see him and slammed into him, killing him. Of course the people who cause the accidents walk away. Both those accidents had nothing to do with weather though. The semi drivers have no excuse. The first accident was at an intersection that's had flashing yellow lights, then they went to just the 2 way stop, then they've added in a 4 way stop. And people don't stop. It's been going on since I've been driving!
arg busy day today, but it's almost lunch and I've been munching on cold brisket, yum!!
Here's an update on my foot:
My dr is so honest, I just love him for that. He had one foot cradled in one hand, the other cradled in the other hand. He's looking at them, comparing them, looks me dead in the eye and says, "Christine, I am so sorry, I really don't know what's wrong with your foot." I said, "I know you don't, just as long as we know it's not life threatening or foot threatening I really don't care, I just want the pain to go away." He did find a really tender pressure point so we talked it over and decided to treat it as Morton's Neuroma but I don't think he put the Cortizone shot in the right place, but then again I'm not sure it even matters. It is doing better but my toes are stiff from the shot so it's hard to tell, he said it could take up to 5 days for me to not be sore from the shot, but I seem to be afraid to put much pressure on it. We'll see.
Thank you for holding my hand Celia! The dr thought I had you on the phone and you were going to be listening, had to calm him down about that one! LOL!!
That's so funny! LOL I had a very sore spot on my foot once. I forgot to tell you about it. It was from walking wrong. Yup, walking wrong. I had to re-learn to walk with my foot turned the right way. The muscles were all tightened up like a Charlie horse. Once I got the foot turned right, the pain went away. It got that way after one of my surguries.
Huh, wonder if I'm doing that and not realizing it. I had a muscle cramp in my foot that lasted about 3 weeks in the same toe I'm having problems with. It lasted about 3 weeks, then went away for a couple, now I have this. I bet it's related.
Could be. What kind of pain is it? Sharp and stingy or a steady throb? Only when you walk or all the time? I sound like the Doc, don't I? LOL
LOL Celia! The pain changed the shot, oops, I mean the shot changed the pain LOL!!!
Before it was a sharp stinging achy weird feeling when I put some weight on it, especially the inside, I was walking around on the outside of my foot and limping big time. Then when I would be sitting at my desk it would do a few minutes here and there of that slow throbbing pain right through my foot, the prednisone got rid of that. Now I have this sharp stinging sensation right at the top of my foot where the bone is, plus my toes are sore and stiff. I could barely stand it last night so I focused on wrapping presents and getting them shipped via UPS.
Hmm...try turning your foot straight ahead. Don't tip it in or out and see what happens. Even at your desk. It might take a few days. If that's it.
He said it could take up to 5 days for the soreness to go away, the internet says 3 days. It is better, I'm not completely gimpy anyway.
At least it's better. How are you otherwise?
My SIL in OR had her surgery on Wed. and was in the hospital a day longer than expected. I just talked to my DB and he said she went home last night and to a Dr. appt. this morning. But now she is back in the hospital. He will call me later to tell me why. I'm worried.
I got it!! It's a pinching sensation in my big joint in my big toe at the moment, but it'll move!
That's not right. I hope everything is ok and he just wants her for more observation for whatever reason. I'm worried too.
Now my middle 3 toes are burning like there's a fire inside of them.
Ewww!
That subsided, now it's ok.
It's kind of a slow throb on the bottom center of my foot. I'm posting all of this so you can see how it moves and changes. It's truly the strangest thing I have ever had.
Oh Ms. Cheerful just told me that I am a headache. I've got one for her!
Oh now sharp stinging pain from the middle of my foot down my 3 middle toes! OOUUUCCCCHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lasted about 30 seconds and it stopped.

Crissy, what kind of shoes do you wear? Have you ever had back problems?
I wear rounded toed dress shoes to work every day, flat boots on Friday's if we can wear jeans, and tennis shoes all other times. I have bone spurs in my tailbone but I to go the chiropractor for that.
I ask because I was having similar problems with my right foot a couple years ago and neurologist finally narrowed it down to my shoes...I was tying my sneakers too tight and my other shoes were putting pressure on the nerves across the top of my foot. None of it enough to hurt the top of my foot, but just enough to irritate the nerves. When my left foot started, we discovered it was an irritated nerve in the sheath that runs down the leg.
That's what Morton's Neuroma is, basically speaking, an inflamed nerve. That's what he's treating, I hope it gets rid of the issues, this sucks! LOL
Best of luck to you...hope the cortisone/prednisone work well for you..when your feet hurt it makes everything more sensitive....
Oooh, I hate it when my feet hurt!! I've had senstations similar to what you are having before but I usually figured out what I was doing wrong and corrected it. Rubbed it out too and told the pain to go away and stay away or else!! LOL. Hope your pain goes away in a few days!!
I hope it goes away forever. I have been dealing with my feet for 10 years. Something always hurts. (sigh)
My SIL was back in the hospital and they are just now going home. DB told me she had some heart arrhythmia during her procedure and then some today. They took x-rays and an EKG but can't find the problem. She spent almost 10 hours in the emergency room.
A lot of common foot problems are caused from a falling arch. Which of course, can be corrected with an arch support. Not a Dr. Shoals or whomever, but one that's been made for you from a cast of your feet. Krista had bone spurs, but she didn't see a chiropractor...I'm not sure what they can do for that? Anyway, she saw a foot doctor. She took some pills for awhile and now she has arch supports and her feet don't hurt anymore. (I come from a loooong line of foot hurting problems, myself included.) Spurs were in the heel of her foot.
I have spurs in both feet, on the backs of my feet and the bottom of them. The orthotics did not help, even a little bit. My problem was my job. I had to walk all day, every day, for 15 years. On mable floors. I also had to run, which is also bad. Wearing sensible shoes with the orthotics only seemed to make it worse. 3 years after my last surgery, my left foot is starting to hurt again. (sigh)
Huh. I guess Krista got lucky with hers. I have to have arch supports in my shoes or shoes that have a really good support. I've had to have them (arch supports) since I was 15. Unless I want to make a statement, like with my sassy stiletto red heels. My spur was in my neck and thankfully my surgery made it go bye-bye.
Foot problems are horrible. I don't have arch problems or bone spurs yet... Don't know what I got but I know it's not either one of those!
LOL Terry those red stilettos are hot!
I have a bruise where he gave me the shot, plus my toes are stiff, so I think a lot of my problem is from that. The burning sensation that I have is almost gone, but now both my ankles are cramping into my calves. If it's not one thing it's another!
Oooo Dave should be almost home from work...
He has from Christmas Eve through January 3rd or 4th off, they shut the plant down every year between Christmas and New Year, then he goes back to work for a week and then he reaches his lay off date. I just keep hoping that doesn't happen.
I'd probably try soaking my feet Crissy. I don't know what's going on with my feet. I can't hardly bend my feet. Not from the bottom, from the top. It's weird and it's annoying. All of me is just so stiff anymore.
Where John used to work, they shut down from Christmas to after the first of the year. Paid too. I hope Dave doesn't get laid off or if he does, it's for a very short time!
Have a question for anyone...my husband says I'm gross. I've always liked prunes. Yes, you read that right. I like prunes. They're just plums for heavens sake. We were at Sam's (I need more fiber and fruit and basically everything in my diet), so I saw the dried prunes. Oh yum!!! I exclaim!!! You'd have thought I'd just grown a new head or something. My grandma used to eat them and she asked me if I wanted one and I like prunes so I had one. Yum. John doesn't like raisins either, so what's he know?
I'm not a big prune fan but they aren't bad. I like raisins sometimes but not all the time. lol
I don't have feet problems yet but I am picky about my shoes. If they don't have decent arch support I won't wear them. I won't buy my boots or tennis shoes from Wally World. Tennis shoes I used to get at our Reebok store but they went out of business a few months ago so it's stores in the city. My boots I get in a boot/Western store in another town. Pay a fortune but they fit me better and last several years.
