GYPSIES REMEMBER BASIL...Part 5

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

OK, who in there right mind would pay

High Bid: $1075.00

for a day lily???
Sheeesh, and 6 hours to go yet!

Trina, did you have your credit card out on this one recently???..........LOL

Woodhull, IL(Zone 5a)

Somebody with more money that me!!
They must want it really bad!

It was only in the $900's last time I looked.

OK It's outside I go.
Must be close to 70 outside here today maybe I'll work on my tan!! LOL

Later

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

Lucky you JJ, Raining here :-(

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Hi JJ, Hi Kassy. It sounds like a fool and their money are soon to be parted. Unless these folks have figured out a heck of a retail plan, they are gonna have one fancy garden spot....grin Never understood that mindset...guess it is cuz I have never had that kind of money to throw away.

Sorry about the rain Kassy, guess it is good ya have to sleep then work....maybe it will be clear and sunny when you are off.

Have fun in the sun JJ.

Later, Moon

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

$1074.00 for a daylily? Does it cook and clean and wash the dishes and keep you organized, and dress you and brush your teath and hair?

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

no I certainly have never paid that much for anything...the most was $35 for a TREE...I'm cheap when it comes to buying plants, that's why I like Dave's, I can TRADE for what I want, only cost is the shipping, and trust me I probably waste more in candy bars than I spend on shipping...LOL

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

Hi Jean,
Yes, at least this is good sleeping weather. Now I just have to stay far away from my son and DIL who are both coughing..........sheesh

And Some of the people who work where I do have had the H1N1 flu, and now some of the clients are coming down with it.
Boy, have I been pushing the C and zinc!!!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Hi everyone!

Smiley, yes show us the creative things you make!

It was 44 degrees when I went walking this morning but it is 59 now. High of 65 today and tomorrow. A little sun today and more tomorrow!

Where in the world are people biding for this expensive daylily! What is so special about it???

JJ, wasn't your grandson into Sponge Bob? I can't remember, do you plant seeds? I don't see that I have you on my "send list."

I finally got my desk cleared off and cleaned. I can't believe that I have put off my pile of paperwork for so long. Now I have one big urgent pile of papers on my desk and half a dozen little piles behind me on the floor that go somewhere else.

I always sort seeds at my desk. I tried sifting the puff ball seeds from the cheap aster plants. Don't ever do that! I had fluff all over. Yesterday morning I was sifting the yellow celosia seeds. The little chaff blew everywhere! I even swept the air because I could see it flying around.

I have mild aesthma. I finally figured out that the reason I had been coughing at night was since I brought that mulch inside to dry. I put it in the other bedroom with the door closed and now no problem.

My good avocado tree is dying! The leaves keep getting large brown blotchy spots. There are some now that have it all over the leaves. A couple of times recently I have taken off 20 leaves each time. It looks pretty bare now and I am leaving on those bad leaves. I sprayed it again with that water, alcohol, liquid soap solution but nothing is stopping it. Here is a photo of some leaves.

Hope you are enjoying your day!

Hello everybody! Sunny but a coooold breeze here! Finally took down my pots, found these tubers in them...can I grow sweet potato vine from them if I store them? CAN I store them?

(Zone 5b)

Also, I found a baby oak tree out there...I was happy to see that, I need more trees!

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

Wish I could help Venice. I don't know anything about avocado's.

Can't show any pictures of anything I've made, I give them away. I did make my own nest, but can't get a good shot of it. It's teeny, and the eggs (that represent us) are even smaller. I'd love to post a picture, I'm very proud of it. I'll ask DH to help me get a good shot. Most of my stuff looks juvenile to me anyways.

I ended up going outside. Saw all the sun shining. Knocked the dirt off Trina's perennial peas - you still want them?

Venice, check out the daylily forum if you want to see what they're bidding on. It's pretty, but that's a perfect example of what's wrong in this world, if you ask me.

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

I meant to ask that too, Lynnie. How does one grow a sweet potato vine? With a regular sweet potato? They would look nice in my window boxes next year. Do they need tons of sun?

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

Oh, I forgot. No fish for DD, Moon. You are correct, they have faces.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Lynnie, you are lucky to find tubers because I didn't have any.

Wash them, dry them for a few days, wrap in newspaper, and store in cool place. That's it!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Saw that special daylily. It is still a daylily!!

I think the tag on this plant said it was a South Afrian Begonia. It had red blossoms. I can't find anything similar to it anywhere. Does anyone know what it is?

It has been affected by the cold and didn't have much chance to grow because it was smothered by a tomato plant.

Want some Maple seeds Lynn?
Might take them a long time to get to be this size though...........LOL

OK off to take some more C and zinc, since I have sick people around me all over, at home and at work!!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

And they say to continually wash your hands, don't touch your face, and drink water!

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

And I'm a caregiver..........................Oh boy, I see it coming!
Bed time so I can go back to work again tonight.
Think I will spray my son and DIL down with lysol first and then take my C and zinc ^_^

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Smiley, had to laugh about fish faces.....guess chickens don't count....lol (just teasing). You can start a sweet potato vine in a jar of water on a window sill and it will be ready for spring. They need a few hours of sun, and morning is best, but will do okay if they get 2 or 3 hours.

Neat, Lynnie. How big is the oak seedling?

Hi Venice, good advice on the tuber storage...see? you are catching on. Grin

Kassy, gonna have to get you a respirator to protect ya from the sickies....grin

Trina, sounds like you have a candy bar addiction to go with the plants...grin

Seems we are raising another packrat...the stuff that I found in that closet....think I saw Hoffa's shoe....lol

Back into the fray...coffee cup is empty.

Keaau, HI

Good morning, how is everyone today! Welina me ke aloha!

$1075 bucks for a daylily? The good news could be that contracts are not legally binding, when one is under the influence.

Steak sounds good; hamburger not so much; but if I start eating meat again, my doctors will be giving me dirty looks. Although I did throw a nice naturally smoked ham-steak in the freezer for Thanksgiving.

Tombo Ahi, Veggie Chili, Rice, & cooked Greens on the menu today.

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

Lynnie I see no one has answered you...LOok venice I went back and read something!...yes Lynnie you can save some back to grow next year, if you've ever planted potatoes before it is the same

Venice I'm no expert, that's Dave's job....but your avocados look sunburnt, like my ficus elastica (look Dave I used the proper name) gets too much sun

Keaau, HI

Hey Carol, can you show a close-up of that plant, including the stems. It kinda looks like a Garden Balsam, Impatiens balsamina.

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Carol, your problem may be alcohol burn. That stuff is not meant to be used repeatedly, only to get rid of bugs before you bring the plant in.The combination of alcohol and sunlight could be your problem. Try misting off the leaves.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Dave, I had to look up to find out what Tombo Ahi is, tuna!

Can you see what you need from this bad photo?

This is the first time I have sprayed the trees with that solution. I used some commercial spray before I brought them inside. I thought it was a reaction to that spray so I washed each leave and stems. Then the leaves were looking worse so then I used our homemade spray. Funny thing, the other tree doesn't have the same problem! I treat them the same.

My camera uses regular batteries. The last time I bought batteries, I bought the real cheap Walgreens' brand. Let me tell you, there is a big difference!!!! They don't last very long at all. I bet one brand name battery would last as long as 10 of these cheap ones!!!!

Keaau, HI

The photo is blurred but it still looks similar to Balsam.

Woodhull, IL(Zone 5a)

Yes venice my youngest grandson loves spongebob. No I am not on your send list because I don't have good luck with seeds. I got some seeds from the daylily forum but I think I am going to have my neice take half and plant them( she usually has good luck with seeds).

I have better luck waiting for the half dead plant sales.

Lynnie I know where I can get walnut seedlings for free.

Dave what is Tombo Ahi?

Moon glad you made it out.
Smiley and Trina hope you are enjoying your day.

Break time over have to get back outside. Decided to cut back my lilies and hostas instead of letting them die and cleaning up in the spring BECAUSE I found a bunch of these cute little things in them,
under them everywhere.

Thumbnail by jjsgramma
Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Dave, I can try again to get a better photo if that would help. Let me know.

Keaau, HI

Tombo Ahi is a type of tuna (as Carol found), but has less Mercury and better oil than other tuna. Fresh, it is delicious, sauteed with olive oil, sea salt, black pepper, and finished with Nori seaweed strips. Much better than anything from a can.

Carol, I use a solar battery charger to power my camera. Since doing so I've not had to buy any more batteries. Definitely worth getting.

Keaau, HI

Yes, another photo would help. Can you describe the flowers?

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

ok note to self don't go trading after you take Migraine Meds!!!!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

It has been so long since that plant bloomed. I was trying to remember what the blossoms looked like. From my memory, it seemed that they looked more like impatiens.

Moon, I think you got it!!! They definitely are red New Guinea Impatiens x hawkeri!
Good job! Thanks!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

That plant really didn't have much of a chance because it was being smothered. I have just a few seeds from it. The red looks nice with the dark green leaves. I know it is hard to tell what the plant is like since it is half dead now.

Dave, any ideas about my avocado tree?

Woodhull, IL(Zone 5a)

OK How close to the ground can I cut these lilies??

I found all of these in one of my smaller plants, which btw has a couple buds on it.

Don't they look healthy?? I squished em and I think they were gonna have babies.

iiiicccckkkkk

Keaau, HI

Stop spraying caustic materials on the leaves.

Maybe the effects of Winter are happening to your Avo.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

JJ, how absolutely YUCKY!!!!!

Dave, do you think I should wash the leaves again? It is just with water.

Woodhull, IL(Zone 5a)

Somebody send me some SLUGGO

pleeeeze!!!

Keaau, HI

If there is still residue on the leaves, you can try to get more of it off the plant with water.

Here, Avocados often drop a lot of their old leaves before they make new ones. To help, you can put the tree in a larger pot to allow more root space, and fertilize the plant. Putting the plant on a regular fertilizer schedule will help to keep it healthy.
What are you fertilizing the trees with now?

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

ok JJ I think that was the first time anyone on here has posted a pic and it made my tummy want to hurl....thanks but no offense I like Dave's pics better....LOL
