GYPSIES REMEMBER BASIL...Part 5

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

venice, he has tilled the garden already this year, so we will probably rake a bunch on to it and he will till it again in the spring.

Trust me venice, the leaves will be falling soon. The Box Elders were already losing theirs

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

I will probably be raking some onto my flower beds when I go up there this next weekend.
If the weather lets me!

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

I hear ya JJs. Cooking small is much harder for me too. I tend to freeze a lot of stuff for Jim and Jordan for those times I will not cook. Much rather throw some rice or noodles in a pot and have the sauce or beans or stir fry thawing in the microwave....grilled cheese sandwiches are a big favorite here too...grin

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Moon, that example is pretty straight forward. The next question I have is what about the following?

Common Name: Stokes' aster
Plant Type: Herbaceous perennial
Family: Asteraceae

What do we put on a seed packet or on a trade list? I would assume that the common name would be useful.

Woodhull, IL(Zone 5a)

Progress has been made I am dressed, groomed and the poor dog finally got let outside and its not to bad out there today.
So I will catch you all later.

Kassy have a good night if I don't talk to you before you go to work.

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

JJ it's a nippy wind out there and we got some clouds trying to brew something up

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Venice, the info you have there is really all you need. It gives the recipient all the info necessary to research the plant.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Moon, well it is no wonder that I don't recognize many of the flower names because the common name is not used! Is that right??

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Okay, patience is gone....every blooming CPU in the house is acting up. It has taken close to two hours just to read the new stuff cuz things keep locking up and signals keep going away and the bleeding laptop keeps losing signal...grrrr. Catch you guys later....I am going to demolish more weeds....frustration alleviation 101....grin

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Common names are more confusing than helpful, as many times more than one plant has the same common name. That is why Google is my best garden friend....lol

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

LOL Moon yep weeding is one way of dealing with frustration!

so did you figure out what any of your seeds are yet Venice?

Keaau, HI

Aloha Dave!

I need a really good printer that can print alot of pictures and not use up alot of ink to do it!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Dave, I am getting very confused. For us we identify genus, species, cultivar. Why doesn't your basil have a cultivar? Botanical Nomenclature must be different from DG ID. is!

(Zone 5b)

Forgot I had plans for shoe shopping....ran out in a hurry....now looking for food it's cold & rainy.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Trina, I thought someone said to set my printer on Quick Print. I just checked and mine is back to Automatic. Maybe I need to reset it everytime. ??? Just what are you printing?

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

pictures...lots and lots of pictures....gonna save up so I can get a whole fancy set up for desk top publishing! someday any way....LOL

Keaau, HI

Hi Carol, when you see 'italics' around a variety name it means it is a cultivar. Such as 'Genovese'.

A cultivar is a cultivated variety. Usually of garden origin.

Keaau, HI

Binomial Nomenclature is the official International method of naming plants; using the Genus and species as an epithet.

Follow the binomial name are sub-species, forms (forma), varieties, and cultivars.

Varieties, are naturally occurring differences within a species.

Cultivars, are differences in a species of garden origin.

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

Dave can we negotiate this half of all the named species down just a teensy bit....I mean I know I tell the BF I am the Noah of the plant kingdom....but I was only kidding

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Thanks Dave!

Keaau, HI

Hey Trina, how many species did you want to put in your Ark?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Dave or Moon, I can't find any info of Blue Spiral harvest on the Internet or DG. Do you know anything about it?

Keaau, HI

I'm not sure what you're talking about, Carol.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

I have seeds for Blue Spiral Harvest. I can't find any information about that flower.

Keaau, HI

To find information on that cultivar, you need to know the name of the species which it is a cultivar of.

What company did you get the plant from?

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

If I could fit them on the ark ALL of them....LOL

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Blue Spiral is a type of juniper, Venice. Sounds like you may need to contact whom ever is sending out seeds to newbies and see if they may be able to help....sounds like it is time for some guidelines for identifying what is sent out.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Dave, if only I knew! They are some of the Newbie seeds.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Moon, good idea. However, I brought it to the attention of the person who heads the Newbie seeds and she told me that when I find info on the seeds to give her the info!!!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Not only do I have to look up the info on all the Newbie seeds, but I can't even look some up because of not enough info. This is so time consuming!!!! And frustrating!

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

but it gives you more oportunity to learn and grow and be with us...LOL

Keaau, HI

Hey Carol, can you show a photo of the seeds?

If it is a Juniper, the seeds should look like one.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Well, I am not opening the packet. You know how small petunia seeds are? These seeds have to be even less than half that size!

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

I don't want to go face the teenagers!!!!

Keaau, HI

Juniper seeds are not very small.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Moon, are you saying these may be Juniper tree seeds? What do Juniper seeds look like? In a few minutes, I am sending this stupid packet back to the Newbie person!!! Unless someone wants them!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

I didn't think they were very small. The berries look like small blue berries.

Ok, both of you have one more guess and then they are going back!

Keaau, HI

One more guess?

How about Basil!
