New bees chit chat thread...Seed Junkies welcome 09/27/09

Montrose, AR(Zone 8a)

Im in zone 8b ..I live in the delta, but I love the Mountain ranges here and when I no longer have parents to take care of Im thinking of making that area my home...

I traveled through and visited some of the springs when I was younger. I think it was around Little Rock. I've looked at property on one of the lakes there. Pretty pretty. I thought you were 8b like southern GA. Mountains sound nice!

Arejay, Here is my EE bloom. It's open on the side of it. I'll try for a better picture tomorrow. We actually got some sunshine today after it rained all night last night. It made it all the way to 78 today. We spread several more piles of mulch today all around my trees and bushes. The guys came and brought me another load of chippings today. This stuff is so full of green leaves and pine needles, I can't believe it is so good and free. They said they would be working in this area for another 2 weeks at least so would have more loads to come if we wanted them. We said we did so gonna have plenty this year. That mulch is HOT in there when we moved it. It was down in the 40's last night and it rained all night and it was probably 90 degrees, or more, in the mulch pile. It really held in the heat. Well, hope everyone had a good day today and got the to get out some. Sure was nice here.
Kelley, did you finish planting your garden?

Hiya mekos!

I played in the dirt aaaaaaaaalllllllllllllllllllllll day long and yes - the fall veggies are planted and I'm soooooooo glad! Now to keep them watered until they sprout - lol. It's still gonna be in the 80s here, but not too bad.

I'm gonna feel like you in the morning - sore.

But when it gets harvest time, you will be so happy. They will tast good. When does your winter start?-(what little bit you get.)

Loca, you got MAIL.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

. . . back at ya', if you're still up - lol...

Winter? Did someone say winter? Uh, I really don't know what that is - lol. We really don't get frost or a true freeze though I've seen some nights borderline. A couple years ago we had a bad freeze two nights in a row. Lots of folks lost lots of plants that year. My bougainvillas and my snail vine I thought were goners, but they came back. I lost a coupleof roses which was OK - my MIL planted them years ago in a bad spot and I hated them, so no loss there - lol.

We get the coldest temps in January early on, sometimes the end of December. Most things make it through with minor protection - I'll throw sheets on some things or bring pots inside, but usually nothing too major. Veggies I can cover if need be. Last winter we had a few cool nights and my friend put candles in her little cold frames to keep the veggies warm. She didn't think the plastic would be enough - lol. It worked!

Wow. Well, if you can grow stuff all year round I guess that would be good but don't think I would trade my snow for that. I like it too much. And the heat is just too much for the summer for me. I still say it's easier to add clothes to stay warm but you can only take so much off to cool down and it's just not enough for me. I breathe better when it's cooler. Never smoked a day in my life but you'd think I did with my breathing problems in the heat.

Gorgeous EE's Mekos! I want some black ones for my Goth Garden ;-)

I may have an extra one I can spare. This is the first one I have seen bloom. I'm sending several packages out this week so probably will be next week before I can do more on plants going out. I really need to finish up my greenhouse and finish spreading the mulch and not a lot of time to do all this, before it cools too much. You might need to remind me next week.

I'm going to turn in tonight. I am tired. If it doesn't rain tomorrow, I got more to do on spreading mulch and some packages going out and want to finish the greenhouse, if I can this weekend. So GOOD NIGHT EVERYONE. Talk to ya later. Where is CUE? Haven't heard from her in a while. CUE, are you OK? You been having girls night out again?

Good Rainy Morning to all LOL. Raining here again today and suppose to rain for the next couple of days. They have even put flood watches out before it even started raining LOL.
I was wondering if any one of you would know if I bought a clove of garlic and planted it ,would it grow? I have been looking for some to get started and the price is outrageous on them, so I thought if I could do it this way I would have some.

Port Norris, NJ(Zone 7b)

Flower, Yes you can do that with garlic and shallots as well. Just make sure the garlic has some green tips showing. (clandestinely peel some of the white "paper" back if you don't see any) A lot of times when the garlic starts to sprout stores put it in the mark-down area. I've taken every one when I see them and just divide the sections & stick them in the garden or a planter if its winter.

Morning All

Hope everyone has a great Day!!!

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

flower - I buy all my garlic to plant at the Farmer's Market - divide up into individual cloves and plant. That way I know it hasn't been treated with any type of sprout inhibitor. Plus, it's locally grown so I know it will grow here - lol.

mekos - the desert is actually good for your breathing problems - lol. Seriously - back in the day people from back east used to move to this area to help with their breathing issues. The humidity combined with the heat is what makes it hard to breathe. We have very very low, well almost non-existant, humidity most of the year. But you're right that you can only get so, uh, undressed, to deal with the heat!

I like the snow, too - just not the cold that comes along with it... If you ever want to visit, you just let me know. We could do lots of work in my yard as you already know!

Well, it's lunchtime - gotta grab me a bite to eat . . .

Hornell, NY(Zone 5a)

Yes Flower - This is a great time to plant garlic in the Northern states. There is a difference in the many varieties though. "Hardnecks" grow better in the North, "Softnecks" grow better in the South. You will often see softnecks more as grocery store stock, so be careful what you get. October is the best time to plant the hardnecks for us northerners, the same as other Fall bulbs like tulips and daffs.

Try to find a "real" garlic grower in your area. Lacking that, check with a local farm stand or community market that sells homegrown stuff. Often these folks will gladly share all the information you'll need to get started. There are also some very interesting articles in DG's information forums on garlic growing, especially those written by Darius Van d'Rhys.

Hey guys- had to share this- This little puppy wandered onto my property today. I kept yelling at him to "git" from a distance. When he got up close I felt so horrible. Yes, I did the no-no.. I fed him. He's in pretty bad shape- ticks in his ears, sore paws, and I would say SPCA would call him emaciated. You can see every rib. He has a collar on- must belong to someone. He would barely let me come near him let alone touch him. He cowers when you reach your hand out to him. He started just wagging his tail after a few minutes of eating. My hubby is gonna kill me, but I could not just walk away knowing I could help him. I can't keep him, we already have 4 dogs but I at least gave him a meal. If he sticks around, I will doctor him up and find him a home.

Lycos I thought the ones from the south were called "Rednecks" LOL .. I know- hardy har har... couldn't resist, lol

Middleton, TN(Zone 7a)

Here's what I did this morning. Put the border around yesterday , planted and put some little friends in there today.

Well I would go to the farmers markets but they have all closed for the season here so I guess I'll try to buy some garlic at the grocery and see if it will do ok here. Thanks all for the info.

Middleton, TN(Zone 7a)

I didn't know you could start garlic like that ;-) Always learning something here.. hmm

Hornell, NY(Zone 5a)

Yeah - Well we got rednecks up here, too. Maybe I'm one of them!! Just hope I don't get planted too soon. Depends on how you define redneck. (I won't get into that one) LOL

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Mechelle - good on you for giving that poor doggy a bite to eat! He sure is cute. I'm sure you can find a good home for him!

With the economy the way it is, chances are someone dumped him off, especially if you're in a rural area. People like that p!#% me off to no end... I've never seen so many "strays" around as I have the past few months. Makes me sick.

Middleton, TN(Zone 7a)

Yeah well if you think thats badLoca, about a month before I moved out here, a lady came to my door at 6am and said "Your horses are out by the street" I ran outside and someone had dumped 3 horses in front of my house. They were just hanging out in front of the fence like "let me in, those horses look healthy and happy" They were really emaciated. I went door to door for 3 hours thinking maybe they got out or something.. By noon when no one was looking for them to feed them or something, I called Animal Control. By then I was mad at how they were being taken care of and didn't think the owner needed to have them back. They went to a rescue facility. It was funny, the animal control guys couldn't get them in the trailer, but I got all 3 of them in on the first shot. In California it's way worse than out here- hay was $16 a bale when I left and rumored to be going up. I have a very soft heart when it comes to animals.

St John's, Antigua and Barbuda(Zone 10a)

Garlic help needed. Found a bulb that was shooting green, removed the paper skin and planted...but nothing, should I did one up to see what is going on?

Just got back from a business trip in Barbados and it was hot, hot hot, can't even remember when last I saw snow.....

We get strays here as well. Since I live on a dead end road, people are always dropping off unwanted pets and they instantly come here. They sense warm hearts and good food. I was lucky enough to see one who dumped 5 puppies out one morning and knew who it was so I gave him 30 minutes to contact me to come get them or face a warrant, he didn't believe I would and he didn't so I did. He went to jail. Animal control got the puppies and they were all adopted as far as I know. I took dog food to the animal shelter to be able to check on them and saw when the last one was gone. That is one of my biggest pet peeves. The other is hudlems tossing their liquor bottles out and busting the bottles and beer bottles and cans tossed out on the road side out here. Now I take pictures of stupid idiots and turn them in.
What is wrong with putting a trash bag in your own car if you want to drink and toss the waste, and put in your own trash bag at home. Take puppies to the animal shelter in hopes of finding it a home and food until then. At least they would have a chance.
I guess I should shut up now.
OH, good morning everyone.
Flower I couldn't help you with garlic, I personally never grew any, but sounds like someone has helped you there.
Loca, I just might shock you (and me) one day and show up out there. Even if it's just in my dreams.
Where is CUE?
Hi Seray. You and Flower, Hollyhock and Blondie are about to get a surprise. Woo-Hoo and Ye-Ha! It would have been there a day earlier, but I had company all day today and for some reason, they just left a little while ago. Company always show up at the most inconvienient time.
Well, going to go for a while. Hope you all have a good evening.

Bed looks great Mekos!!

Flower I have a pack of garlic seeds coming your way. I traded for some earlier and have extras. Planting it in your Lasagna bed? LOL I know I know I couldn't help myself. :)

Middleton, TN(Zone 7a)

Coc- Barbados? Hmm I'm so jealous ;-) Yeah Mekos, they do that out here on the main road with beer cans n stuff. I have seen people just toss beer cans out the window like nothing. It's so annoying.

Start getting tag numbers and report them and when they have to pay fines a time or two, they will quit doing it so much. I use to ignore stuff but when it's right here in front of my house it got to me and now, I'll report any I see.

Me too. I have been known to get in the car to go after the license plate number. LOL

Love surprises. :)

You know I have been noticing that some people(I won't call any names) doesn't have a want list out there so others can look and see what they would like and surprise them so if someone(and again I won't call any names) would perhaps go put one up, they might get more surprises that they actually want instead of getting something they may need to send off in trades to get rid of. But I won't mention any names, Seray. Just thought I'd mention that.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

I love animals a lot and even though I can't have too many in the city here, I hate to see them dumped off like that. Like mekos said, at least take them to a shelter so they have a chance. Better yet, don't get an animal unless you can commit to caring for it for it's entire lifetime. Depending on the animal, that could be a long time. We had a horse when I was a kid that lived to be almost 23.

mekos - you're welcome to pop in anytime!

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

You wouldn't be talking about seray would you now?!?!

Yea, but I won't mention any names. I've been wanting to surprise her, but I guess this will really surprise her. Me too if she likes them. Those lists sure would help us less informed people out, ya know. EVERYONE needs to post a WANT list just for the rest of us to go look at. Is everyone listening?

Some of us are hearing you. If I posted it you'd know how weird and wacky I really am. LOL

This message was edited Oct 8, 2009 8:30 PM

That might be what we want to know, but post one anyway. Couldn't be more weird than mine. I live in zone 7 but looking for stuff that normally grows in hawaii or those zones. How weird is that?

I think I'll just make a copy of yours LOL Where do you post the thing anyway?

Found it. :)

This message was edited Oct 8, 2009 8:39 PM

OH GOODY! Everyone go look how weird Seray is. Ssshhhhhhh!

ROTFL I'm pretty sure most know by now anyway.

I will do that. I always get caught up on the have list. I have lots and lots of things but I'm not very good at taking cuttings just yet. Working on it. Hate to have all wants and no haves. LOL Thought I'd try to do that this winter.

Well, some of us want to see what you want NOW, before winter. How about getting it started?!? I had to bug Loca to get hers started too a while back. guess I can go look at hers again and see what she might want.

I'll work on it. It'll be fun.
