New bees chit chat thread...Seed Junkies welcome 09/08-09

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

HI Everyone just now getting a chance to sit and type more than a few words. Put up another 5 pints of pumpkin and have another pint I didn't can to make pumpkin bread with. I'm done with pumpkins. Next up is blackberry jelly soon as DH has the time to sit until I need him to check it for ready my eyes don't handle that part too well anymore. Found another box of lids behind some stuff so all set.
Soon as the pumpkin was ready for the canner DH wanted to go to town by the time I got ready to go the canner was done. Least I got to sit while he was in a friend's shop and the part house.

Sounds like everyone's had a busy day! Mekos glad you didn't lose all your babies in the rain. We want to see what those puya's look like. :) I managed to find an hour to finish the last layer of top soil on my LG bed. Yeah!!! If I can find another hour tomorrow I might be able to get some of the hostas in there.

I love pumpkin bread Mindy my grandmother always made it in a coffee can and sent it to me when I moved away from home. I guess it was a homemaker thing. LOL

Sounds like you got as much rain as Mekos Huneybunch. I think daylilies and iris would compete for space. I might be wrong. My daylilies fill up a space quickly. I'd be curious to know if anyone has the experience myself.

Couldn't run us off Arejay! LOL

PUYA babies are HERE!

HI Everyone didn't do anything in the garden except save some touch me not seed and some orange and dark pink zinnia seed. Forgot to even check on my lion's tail to see how far along it is to blooming. Hope it makes it we are due a frost the 8th. My feet say wait a few days to make the jelly LOL they are tired.
I seen a little sprout of a pink hibiscus in a spot it isn't supposed to be anyone want it d mail me. Yes it's hardy Flower darn thing survived the blizzard we had a few years ago. No idea which kind it is was my MIL's. This little squirt is about 8 inches or so tall right now came up from seed. I don't want it still have 2 big plants I've been giving them away as fast as I can get rid of them. No takers means the little squirt gets yanked up and given the death sentence.

ALRIGHT!!!! Knew if they could be germinated you could do it! Thanks for showing us. :)

I'll be glad to give him a home Mindy. Don't have any yet.

My little RED Brug baby.

Hello "seed junkies".

How's my favorite Goth Girl doing tonight

Hey you guys, our favorite Iris grower here.
How you doing Mitt?

Seray, if we do a goth garden, lets do something besides a bat flower. My seeds have been in the pot for weeks and weeks and NOTHING yet. I have a black plant and a white plant, but my green and brown ain't getting it done.

Hello to all you dear friends:
I will try and catch you up on what has all been going on. Tubby has been taking it easy the last couple of days. He has slept alot and sits here at the table and reads the threads and has alot of laughs. I can't imagine how boring it would be for him if he didn't have his computer. He does watch TV, but he has seen every Western a few dozen times and many other shows.
We go to the Cancer Dr. tomorrow and find out how the counts are doing and how many more rounds of Chemo he'll have to go before transplant. We go to his primary Dr. after that and see what things about all that has gone on over the weekend. We go to the Eye Dr. on Thursday to see how his eye if progressing and how soon he wants to repeat the laser tx. on his left eye and he still wants to do laser tx. on the right.
There isn't a dull minute some days. That's okay as long as it helps Tubby get better. I just hate the H--- he goes through. I will be his strength and do what ever I have to, to have him with us as long as possible.
He has been busy looking over the seeds for next spring and is always thinking of things to come up with. He is busy, even when he isn't moving. LOL
Sometimes I get tired just thinking about what he is planning. I need a shot of extra energy, just haven't found the Dr. that knows about that shot. Oh well!
I will close for now, and will check in with you all later. We want to say thanks for all the prayers and thoughts. They help so much. Best wishes to you all and have a lovely day.
Tubby & Shirley

Bless you BOTH and GOD be with you. We sure miss you and praying for your strength to come back soon.

Thanks Shirley for letting us know about Tubby. Hugs to you both. Keep us updated. We'll send you more seeds Tubby when you get ready.

Hi Mitt Glad to hear from you. There are lasagna beds all over the country with your irises in them. We'll show you the pics in the spring.

Hi Mekos

How about everyone contribute a pack of black seeds. Germinate them and send each participant a plant. That way we all start out with the same plants. We can add more if we want. Then we'll use our creativity and share the results. We could let Goth Girl judge the contest.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

So glad to hear Tubby is doing better. Thanks for the update, Shirley!

God bless you both! You're in my thoughts and prayers. Tell Tubby I got lots of "Blackie" when he's ready for them. I can root them in a couple days - they're easy.

Kelly

Sounds good Seray. Everyone get a different kind of seeds. I could like that. Will have to be looking for a nice new black kind of plant.
You guys, I got a little bitty problem. I scooped goat poo out of my goats dog houses and around the area for my lasagna garden and after the rain we just had, I went out to look around and there are thousands of tiny green little plants growing ALL over the garden and I didn't plant anything yet. I think it could be the hay that I throw in to feed the goats and maybe seeds got into the goat poo. I may have hay growing in there. I may not be able to use my garden until I cover it with plastic to kill everything in there. Didn't want to do that yet because of the earthworms living there that would have to move or die but may have to anyway. I know it's alive under there because of the earthworm snake I already found and I put about 2 dozen huge worms from the cabin at the river,( it's an earthworm habitat up there.) Everywhere you look is worms , so I brought some home and put them there to work my garden site. What can I do to fix this except cover in plastic, anyone have any ideas?

I'm turning in for tonight. Back tomorrow. Good night everyone.

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

Thanks for updating us on Tubby, Shirley! Continued prayers are coming your way. Look, I am about 7 hours away, but if there is anything I can do, please let me know. I would be happy to drive down if you need me to. We sure miss you! Tubby, start planning your seed "want" list, so we know what you need. We will be happy to send seeds to you. I'm sure you will be raring to go come spring!

Went to Pamida (small box store) today, (to get dog food) in a town 40 miles away, and came home with a 8' tall cherry tree, a 6' tall canadian cherry, and a mugo pine. But I did remember the dog food! Don't know what I was thinking, as I'm not sure I will get everything planted before winter that I already had around here waiting to get in the ground. But they were on sale, and only paid about $10 for each.

Started a new business besides, as couldn't find a satisfactory job, so am now really busy trying to get the new business off the ground. Just not enough hours in the day. Oh, and my wonderful DD and DSIL, and three grandbabies have all been sick, so went there and spent time helping her with the babies, since she was sickly. Some kind of viral infection, so the doc said, nothing he can give them. But now DH and I are both coming down with it too! Go figure!
I'll check in at least once a day, though! So glad to hear from Shirley! And hope that nobody is floating away!

Mekos, that stinks! Sure hope that I won't have that happen! Wasn't planning on covering any of mine, as it would cost a fortune in black plastic! Wish I had some good ideas for you, but just not coming up with anything. Won't the worms just go underground far enough to be protected?

Not sure skellogg. I know the plastic with sun shining on it cooks the ground hundreds of degrees so nothing can survive the heat for so far down. And my under the garden soil is red clay dirt hard as rocks and no good for anything. I don't know of ever finding worms or any kind of varmits living in it before.

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

Our dirt is that way too, but if we dig down when it is wet, I can sometimes find a worm or two, so maybe? Only happens when it's soaking wet though, so they must hide somewhere the rest of the time. Don't think I've ever seen any when the ground is dry either. But, at least you can import more if needed. LOL!

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

Gonna sign off for the night. Go take a handful of vitamin C and smear a bunch of Vicks on me, and get some rest. 5 am comes mighty early when I'm not feeling up to par. See you all tomorrow! Have a good evening and take care all!

Hope you feel better tomorrow, praying for you too.

Mekos I wonder if you could use shredded paper as another layer to kinda smother the "hay sprouts'. If it's real thick it might work.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Are there too many do pull or dig under? You could let 'em sprout then till in - kinda defeats the no till LG though...

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

Morning all. Lordy, chilly this morning again. About 35 out there! Guess that means I need to bring some plants in, repot, and get ready for winter! Yep, fall is definately in the air! Need to get some winter fertilizer out on the lawn too. Mekos, we will figure something out for you! I like seray's idea, tho. Just add another layer of paper, and then another layer of brown or green? To smother everything?

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

Shirley thanks for updating us on Tubby praying for him to get better.
BLACK plants? not in my garden nope nope nope. Besides if I gave in and did this Goth Garden Cue would have to send one of those calla lilys back here and she's not going to do it you know.
Mekos if you don't mind the LG bed being tilled a little bit put a tempoary fence around the bed then catch a couple of chickens and they'll take care of the problem for you in no time. Plus add some more green to the bed while they do all that work and be happy to do it for you too LOL. That's my solutioin for you.
Today I'm going to play outside been cooped up long enough with those pumpkins.

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

Great idea, Mindy! Chickens would take care of the sprouts. Wish I had some. They take care of grasshoppers too, and I have way too many of them! LOL

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

Maybe she would trade you a few GRIN. just kidding Mekos know you won't part with your babies. Speaking of chickens I better get out there and turn them out or they'll be mad at me all day.

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

GM all , Glad to hear about tubby. Prayers for you both and God bless take care tubby.

Morning All

Glad to see you're up and about Skellog. I was afraid you were getting ill. Wish I had chickens - just have grasshoppers.

I love sunshine Holly. Was happy to move to FL and happy to live in Coastal GA. Rare that we have a 3 - 4 stretch of time with only rain. In the spring sometimes. Most of the time it rains for a few hours (or minutes) and then out with the sun for a few and then back to the rain.

Mindy you can cheer us on with the Goth goings on. LOL I'll find a separate place for mine if we do it. I traded with Tinawitch for a black EE and some of those black irises are pretty flashy. :) And then there's black tulips.

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

Oh I have black tulips and seray the black EE isn't a realy true black . I have a couple and they do have green in them. But still would be ok for a Goth. I also have some of the seed already for black flowers. like the scabiosa, nemphila, and another one can't remember which one it is though. OH and a Black bat seed. I already have a good start . hehe.

Hornell, NY(Zone 5a)

Best I can do is a Black Walnut tree, but sorry girls, it doesn't ship too easily.

Al

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

Oh I have got way to many of those around here. I have one just behind our trailer and you talk about a racket when they start falling. Man I wish we could afford to have that thing taken out but just don't have that kind of money.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Don't use the Black Walnut leaves in your compost or lasagna bed if you want anything to grow there . . .

The roots, nut husks and leaves secrete a substance into the soil called juglone that is a respiratory inhibitor to some plants. Don't grow stuff too close to a black walnut tree. A number of other plants (most notably white birch) are also poisoned by juglone, and should not be planted in close proximity to a black walnut. Horses are susceptible to laminitis from exposure to black walnut wood in bedding.
