New bees chit chat thread...Seed Junkies welcome

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Thank You , Robin for the welcome . It is nice to be here. Oh, I don't like to think of winter,
I know you all have rough ones. I know what winter is like. I was born in Mo. but I sure don't
want to go back. I love it down here. But we do have winter, the snow just doesn't linger for
months like it does in Mo. I'm going to have to read up on the Lasagna gardening. there is one called a
Keyhole gardening too, that is interesting. I believe I read about it on one of these forums early
this year. So may ways to gaden and so many things to learn. I love it.
Think of the plants that truck load of manue will grow. Looks beautiful to me. Just a lot of
necessary work.

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

LOL I don't think I could load that much by hand ole back don't handle things very good so will just get small load at a time. It is just next door so I don't have to far to go with it.

Keyhole gardening what is that??? That is a pretty truckfull!!

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

LOL! I get to load off the 2 1/2 year old pile next, if I use all of this pile. But, that won't be till spring, I'm sure, and then it will be 3 year old stuff. Perfect for top coating everything. Janie, I sure miss living in the country. You are lucky, for sure! Wonder how much good it will do to put it on top of the snow?

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

Yes, do share! We are all curious about keyholes. Now we will have to try that too. LOL

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

I would put it on top of the snow...it will settle in....

Wilburn, AR

My last post reminded me that I need to go to the feed store for chicken feed.
I hope when I get back the keyhole gardening thing has been figured out,I'm interested too.

Morning All! Frost!!! I have 1000 sq ft of tropicals to 'unplunge' before frost. I have about two months left. I started last weekend. Manure looks great. I'm buying mine.

Hope you have a great day! Will check back later.

I looked up keyhole gardening. NO rocks. LOL

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Why couldn't you use concrete blocKs? It was interesting tho wasn't it?

I hope this is the keyhole gardening. First time I tried this copy and paste. Thanks to you all. let me know.

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

arejay I tried that and it wants a name before I can even compose the mail. It doesn't want to let me set up a compose with out a name and I don't want to put names in it as I don't know who I'll be sending to.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Morning everyone!

sk - that's a pretty big load of poo you got there - lol. We have a lot of dairies around and you can just pop in and ask for it. In my line of work I have the inside scoop as I deal with some of them daily. You can buy a 50# bag of aged manure for $3, but mostly I get it fromt hem for free.

I miss living in the country, too. Born and raised in beautiful Aroostook County, Maine - right, Robin? But it sure is c-c-c-c-cold in the wintertime! That I don't miss . . .

I miss skiing and snowmobiling and ice fishing though...

Robin - I know what you mean about flights into Maine - been there, done that - easier to drive - lol.

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

Guess what !!! GAgirl had an agave that she was getting rid of the pups and I ask for one for postage. Got it today and she sent me a Leather leaf fern that I have been wanting forever . Just was tickled to death to get it. More excited about that than the agave. LOL

Nice video RRM Have you seen one that someone has made? The barrel in the middle is that to catch water or collect water from waste?

Nice trade Flower. Those ferns are nice.

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

I believe it must be to collect waste water. the Basket is used as a compost bin. At least that is what i was thing.
There is another article on growing a garden in a bag. I guess over there they are lucky to have anything. Did You see where they were putting those tin cans in the bottom for iron, and they looked like they had been burned. I sure thought I would like to do it, but carrying those rocks is what is going to tear me up. fell off too many critters. Just have to make up my mind to do it. Couldn't ask DH he would think I fell on my head too many times. :-)

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

your talking about taking concrete blocks and putting plants in those and the like?

I think the lasagna beds are easier. Couldn't pay me to stack that many blocks. Earthboxes on benches are my kinda gardening I guess. For that environment it's perfect though.

Might be adapted for a cool goth garden, cave and all. LOL You could probably use some of the hypertufa techniques to make it lighter and look more like a grotto. We have a Goth Garden adviser, Cue and Mechelle is taking a class for hypertufa. Maybe once all our lasagna gardens are filled we could find another group project. Chicken wire, paper and porter cement will go along way. And make an incredible MESS! LOL What fun!!!

Watch the video Flower and you'll see how it's done. Go back up a few threads.

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Yes, concrete blocks, it would be faster than brick. You could always
use the hypertufa to finish the outside. Love playing in the mud.
When my little church cures,I'll have to get you all a pic. I am going
to put it in my flower garden. Got these done but I decorated them a bit. Oe on the left is supposed to be a barn. one on th right,
just a little house. they are cute as can be.

Thumbnail by ridesredmule

Very Cool. Are these hypertufa projects?

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

OK that is just a rocked in Lasagna bed . I heard of keyhole gardening as taking concrete blocks with holes in them and filling with soil, compost and the like mixed and then putting your plants in the holes. I don't remember where I heard it but when you all were talking about this that is what came to my mind.

Yep! That's all it is really. I don't know why it would have to be that high. Seems like a lot of the soil would never get used. And the cans wouldn't add much unless the plants had deep root systems. Maybe I'm thinking 'waist high' for me and not those kids. But it did have a barrel in the middle didn't it. :)

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Here in the desert anything planted in concrete blocks would be fried - lol.

Wilburn, AR

Guess I'll have to stick to cardboard here, rocks or blocks are too much for my back.
I may try a few tomato plants in a hay bale next year

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Yes, I like the tomatoes in a pot idea. But just thought someone may find it interesting.
, Fill the pots once and then plant the tomato plant, take it out in winter thaen repeat yourself.
Here is my husbands tomatoes in a pot. See, doesn't this look easier? Fill the bottom of a large pot
with manure. Top it off with soil and pot the tomatoe in.

I have tried growing tomatoes in a pot and they just turn into big weeds LOL What is the trick to that?

Tomatoes in a pot. More than I can use or want. LOL

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

I have a problem, you all. I have this Starfish cactus just bloomed. when I was trying to turn her around,
I broke pieces off the plant. Wouldn't someone like a start?
Here is the bloom. Send me D-mail with address and I'll gladly send you a start. Really don't need any more pots

Got cha!!

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

ok. LOL I got so excited about it I didn't remember to give you my addy. I have been getting a lot of succulents and catcus lately DH loves them and he has got me hooked on them.
The last time we were at Lowes we bought several that were marked down to half price and then I just got an aloe from budgielover and then an agave from GAgirl today. I have looked at a lot of them on ebay and they want a small fortune for them. I didn't realize catcus and succulents were that expensive.

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

nice to swap around, isn't it. then I give you one. Can't go wrong with that.
Will get it in mail tomarrow unless you want me to wait.
