Springhill's plants are young and usually not established. This can work nicely to your advantage - the plants will grow, and usually thrive, in your native soil. Please refer to the plant size in the catalog. You will NOT receive gallon size plants. The plants will take a year or two to achieve their full potential. Springhill has always stood behind their plants. If something has failed to thrive, even two years after planting, all it takes is a phone call to their customer service center and new ones are on the way. Bargain bag of 6 ground covers - got 6 plants, but only 3 varieties and plants were in bad condition. 5 new heurcheras mix - 5 pots but only 2 or 3 varieties, very unspectacular, the pots not labeled. What I found really bad is that when I tried to post a negative review on these items it did not work, though I tried several times!!! Will not order from their site again and would advice not to believe the reviews posted there, maybe they do not post negative ones. My order included many of the pre-planned sun gardens they had at that time as it was my first undertaking in gardening, was I glad I did. The pre-planned gardens made it so easy to create many nice professional but not run-of the-mill looks. All of my gardens have done very well and getting prettier every year. In additional to the pre-planned gardens, I also purchased several collections of their mini roses and freedom hedge roses, all are great show stoppers and almost carefree performers. Of cousre not all of what I ordered survived the first planting, but SH replaced them without hassle, as the season heated up, although some of the replacements arrived DOA, I didn't request for more replacements as it was alright for me since I was already happy with my more than 90% success rate from these plants. All the plants were well labelled and easily identified. All the plants had good healthy roots and two were already sprouting. The geranium has already bloomed beautifully for such a tiny little plant. The gallardia, which is out by the mailbox, has a bud on it right now. While the initial customer service at Spring Hill was wonderful, their execution was poor. First, when I placed the order, I spoke to someone in customer service about whether the plants could be shipped to the local UPS station, as I live in an inner city environment and I was worried about the plants being stolen if left on the porch. I was told that a note would be put in my account that the packages were to stay at the UPS station and not be delivered to the home address, and when I received my UPS tracking number, to call and check with UPS to make sure they held the package at the shipping station. This was an easy situation to accommodate, they told me. However, when my package shipped, I found that no note was put in my account, the package was being shipped to my billing address, and that, since UPS considers packages the property of the "sender" until they try to deliver once, there was nothing I could do about the situation. I called customer service at SHN to ask if they could call UPS to have the package rerouted, but I was told that they couldn't do that and they wouldn't even try because they have no ability to make outgoing calls. Basically, I was told that it was out of their hands, and that I just need to hope things worked out all right. I had to leave work early that day to try to intercept the UPS deliveryman. The package had been left at my door. Second, I told an approximate shipping date on their website, and planned to have a gardener come several days after the last possible arrival date. He would help me make the garden beds and we would plant the plants together on the weekend after the plants were schedule to arrive. Then, I rechecked the status page to find that shipping had been moved up almost a week, leaving me in a snafu about planting because the plants would now arrive long before the garden beds were prepared. But, thinking things happen, I moved up the date the landscaper would come and thoughts the problems were over. However, I checked the website again, and found that they had split the order into two shipments, nearly 2 weeks apart. So now half of my plants are arriving after the landscaper is booked, and half arrived a week too early and needed to be stored instead of planted immediately. This all could have been avoided if Spring Hill would have just stuck to the original shipping date. Furthermore, when I called to ask if they could at least have the 2nd half of the shipment sent to the UPS station, they told me that the packaged had already been packed and sent, and again there was nothing they could do about it. However, regardless of what the customer service rep said about the status of the package, the plants were not actually sent out (according to their UPS tracking label) until four days AFTER I called asked them to at least fix the shipping address on 2nd half of the package. So, again, I was basically told to deal with the problem, and their company continued to do whatever they wanted to do. Finally, when I received the package, I double checked the packing slip to make sure they at least sent me what they said they would. At first (being a novice gardener), I was concerned about the plants. I knew what to expect with bare roots, and was initially happy that each plants was packaged individually and clearly labelled. However, it quickly became apparent that the quality of the plants varied greatly from package to package. Some plants were well-packed in soil/sawdust and the root systems were large. Others were small, poorly wrapped and I was worried that they would die or dessicate before I could plant them. Never-the-less, the packing slip was accurate for what was in the box. HOWEVER, now that I have the shipping information for the 2nd shipment, it is apparent that they haven't completed the order! 24 plants are missing from the 1st shipment (I ordered 2 phlox collections with 12 plants each), and they are not listed on the packing slip for the second shipment. Ie, I will not receive them in time for the planting day with the gardener, and I likely won't receive them at all unless I call SHN customer service AGAIN. So, overall, while the purchasing side of the transaction was smooth, everything after that has been frustrating. Customer service was inaccurate in the information they provided about shipping. My shipping date was moved too often to plan planting around. . My order was incorrectly filled, and half of it is missing. Too many calls to customer service were necessary to receive the order I wanted. And with the variation in the quality in the roots I received, I also wonder how many of these plants will grow....which will of course require further calls to customer service. I would not recommend this company to others. I only had it at neutral because I hadn't received the plants yet, so it wasn't really fair for me to give it a rating either way. WELL, the good news is that even though my expected delivery date kept getting pushed back farther and farther to the point that it went from a March delivery to May.... I went back and checked again and suddenly it had been bumped up again to April and I received the plants yesterday! Yay! Now, I was pre-warned by my friend who gave me the Spring Hill catalogue that the plants will arrive tiny, so I was prepared for what I received. And I'm happy to report that ALL of the plants are alive and look very healthy! And I ordered a lot of plants (a pre-planned drought tolerant sun garden, 3 early red hot pokers, and 6 salvia) and they came well packed and protected from moving around in the box. My favorite right now is the fragrant lavender, because it just smells sooooo good. I do have to use a bit of patience, because after planting I stood back to take a look at my "masterpiece" garden, and because the plants are so tiny it looks like I have a bunch of errant weeds growing... But I know they will come in beautifully! And I am very pleased to know about the lifetime guarantee--- I will definitely buy from Spring Hill again in the future! I had stopped buying from them because of a problem with price and quality a few years ago. Then I found a special that they had on the internet where they would give you a $20 credit towards a purchase of plants and all you had to do was pay the shipping. I decided to try and give them another chance. I ordered 2 honeyberry plants and paid about $7 in shipping. When the plants arrived they were very healthy and larger then I expected for the price. The price from Spring Hill Nursery was $10 less per plant for the same size plants that I had bought from different nursery. I had paid more money for the plants and shipping from the other vendor then I did with Spring Hill. I am very glad that I gave them a try. I will order more plants from them in the future. They were responsive, fast with their shipment and had quality plants with good packaging. I consider myself a decent gardener, but up until now I have purchased only from my local shops. I want to branch out and get more exotic varieties of shade perennials. I have $300 worth of selections in my shopping cart with Spring Hill as we speak. I have some serious concerns now, given that this company's pro to neg ratio is about even. I understand that it is tough to please everyone but the vitriol and disappointment expressed here in some of the negative reviews concerns me greatly. I plan to be very conservative about what I purchase from Spring Hill. (I can imagine that meeting supply and demand when you deal in living things is quite difficult.) I am not sure what to think, but I appreciate being forewarned. They do guarantee that their plants will grow. And they do replace what doesn't make the grade. And they take our word for it. And they have never set a time limit. That's a good a guarantee as there is from any mail order or on-line company. When I have called to inquire about how to redeem credits or when I have any trouble with their on-line access, they could not be more cooperative.
