I’m always confused when people complain about Spring Hill. “You get what you pay for”. The prices are really low and so is the quality. If you grow plants from seed, but need a jump-start on a few, Spring Hill is the perfect place to pick up a few very teeny plants to place under grow lamps until next season. It is what it is.

I placed an order with this company for some daylilies around the first of April of this year. As I checked the website, the estimated delivery time kept being moved back. I finally emailed them about this and while they didn't respond to me the delivery date moved up to April 20-22. I think the fact I filed a claim with the BBB helped speed things up. They claim to have shipped the package April 17th, but checking the UPS site they actually mailed it April 21. In the mean time they supplied me with a tracking number which was at worst bogus, at best no help since the package hadn't been shipped.
I would never, ever order from this company again and I would not recommend them to anyone.

I should have known better but I bought an improved meyer lemon "tree" from them for $20 but it turned out to be a stick with some leaves on it. It did have a few unopened flower buds on it but it didnt appear to have good strong root system so I think they just cut a twig off a big tree and stuck it in some rooting hormone and called it a day. It is also ugly and oddly shaped. We'll see if it turns out to be of any use. Beware, if you think it sounds like a good deal it probably isnt. I didnt give them a negative because I didnt expect much since their website doesnt give the customer any idea about how big the "tree" is they are sending you. I probably wont buy from them again just because there are better places out there that send great looking trees. They did ship reasonably fast though.

I have had a similar experience with Spring Hill as many of the gardeners here. I should preface that I am not an expert gardener, so someone with more experience may have better luck. In my experience, I had a high ratio of non-growers. They do stand behind their guarantee, but a second shipment of plants that don't grow doesn't help very much. If you call to report non-growing plants, you get the hard-sell to buy something else. The plants that have survived are performing relatively well, but my survival rate was less than 50%.

I set this review to neutral because I'm not an expert gardener, so part of the blame for such a low survival rate almost certainly rests with me. I do, however, have a much better survival rate than 50% with most plants, so I still believe the plants have issues.

On the plus side, if you're an expert gardener you may be able to coax life out of some of the plants that died in my garden, and in that case the reasonable prices may make it worth buying from them.

Also, they have many subsidiaries (or are themselves a subsidiary of a larger company), and they share mailing lists with all their sister companies. I get an unacceptable amount of junk mail as a result, and it is difficult to get taken off the lists.

I ordered from Spring Hill in early March after receiving a catalog in the mail, and on a whim ended up spending nearly $200. Every day I check my order detail to find that the delivery estimate has been pushed back. Finally concerned that my plants might not arrive at a time suitable for planting, I contacted customer service. I can't say the representative was exactly rude, but he certainly didn't display a winning personality. He was unable to give me any concrete answer as to when the plants will be shipped--he even indicated it could be late into the summer. He suggested that I continue to check my order status, and said "if it gets too late, just cancel the order." Well. After reading the feedback on the site, I have half a mind to just cancel the order and continue my shopping with local nurseries.

I just recently moved in to a new home, and the plantings that the bulder put in were substandard. Looking online for plants at reasonable prices, I too was sucked into Spring Hill's $20 no minimum order coupon. I ordered 10 mums, and received them fairly quickly. They arrived in these mini 2" containers, and although they looked healty, I was unimpressed. Still, I went ahead with my plan of planting them along the border of my front flower beds, and by the time the fall came, they were bushes with a 3 foot diameter and looked more like a hedge! When winter came, I trimmed them back, and now here we are in April, spring just coming into bloom, and these plants are healty, and already 1 foot across!!! I love this company. I have found their customer service to be very helpful, whenever I have called. I find that even though I am still in the trial and error period of finilizing my gardens, I can count on Spring Hill for healty plants, and a variety of styles, colors, sizes, and bloom times. Even the dwarf fig, that was sent in a three inch pot, and maybe measured a foot tall, is now almost 6 ft, in a container. I recommend this comany to my neighbors and friends, and those who laughed at my tiny little puny plantings last year, have asked me for their catalog this year.

After reading the feedback here, I was a little skeptical about placing an order with Spring Hill. But their "Free $20" sucked me in, and I purchased a patio lime tree "kit" for $19.99 (includes soil and planter). I only paid a total of $7.95 (for shipping). Three days after my standard order confirmation email, my order was shipped. It came two business days after that...except it was only the "kit" part--the soil and planter. Both were pretty blah, but I didn't expect much else. The soil will go in the compost and the planter will work fine for transplanting shrubs and whatnot. But no tree?!...I drafted my polite but concerned email in my head.

Well, I shouldn't have bothered. The very next day the lime tree came, packaged separately and quite well, looking frankly great. Healthy roots that were well packaged (and not hacked up like other places sometimes like to do), and even some new growth evident on the tree itself, which is a reasonable 2' with a good form. So all is very well!

All of this was slightly confusing from the website--the "kit" vs. the tree itself--but I certainly can't complain with the end result. I'm sure they'll suck me in again with more coupons; and that's not such a bad thing, apparently!

I really like this company. I've ordered from them numerous times, and have always ended up pleased.

Now, let me say first that NOTeverything I've ordered seemed, at the time, to be worth the money. Some items seemed small, a few died shortly after planting, and some bulbs and tubers never did anything. However, I have had only to contact customer service about it and they take care of the problem immediately. Of the items I've ordered and planted successfully, I have been elated to see quick, vigorous growth from plants that seemed to be, at first, questionable. Everything that I've transplanted has pleased me immensely.

It should be noted that Spring Hill Nurseries' customer service is through a handling center that also handles Gardens Alive!, Henry Field's, etc. Between the four I've ordered from ( Spring Hill, Henry Field's, Gardens Alive!, Gurney's) I've had to contact their service center several times--for reasons ranging from receiving a damaged item, to UPS damaging trees in transit, to the above-mentioned issues with dormant/non-producing plants. No matter what the reason for the concern, the customer service is ALWAYS excellent. The staff is friendly, helpful, and competent. They always send me a replacement ASAP with no questions asked. No worries of having to package up and send back items, or keeping your invoice, or jumping through any other hoop to get what you paid for. They make it easy. I have loved that aspect of their service the most.

Regarding their affiliates, (of those I've ordered from) the only one I've really been absolutely disappointed with is Gurney's. Their plants are trash. Their actual service (in the way of shipping and packaging, not phone service) is substandard at BEST.

The others have always offered nice plants, decent prices, good specials, and great service!

I ordered again this year, this time it was a Daylily collection. I just put those in the ground a couple of weeks ago, but already the green shoots of about half of them are shooting up through the mulch. I can't wait to see them bloom! Mom will be mad again.

So far so good!

I have ordered from Spring Hill numerious times over the past 8 years. The plants are usually always small when they arrive and a bit wilty, but considering that the plants are being stuck in a dark box and bounced around during shipping, I'm not surprised. Everything I have purchased from them has done remarkably well. I have an Iris collection from them that grow up to be around 3-3 1/2 feet tall and blooms bigger than softballs. I have a Clematis that looked rough when it arrived and now blooms much earlier than most and lasts most longer than most, same with a climbing rose, that one I have to trim back several times each year because it gets so big. I have had a few plants die, both part of collections and both were replaced with and entire new collection, no questions asked and I've never been "blacklisted" or had an order turned down. I've just placed another very large order with them and even after reading the negative feedback on this site I have no concerns.

We haven't done a lot of mail order purchasing and because of our experience with SH, if we hadn't found DG, probably wouldn't have again.

To be fair, we eventually got everything we ordered. ($100+) The prices seemed good but when we got them, we understood why. They weren't wilted, just smaller than expected. They were ordered in February, promised in late April, which is when the gardening bug usually bites Minnesotans, but didn't arrive until July and August when "gardening" turns into "yard work" and it's time for vacations. Since we don't have a lot of mail order experience, we don't know if they were package well compared to other suppliers - just not very impressive.

We called twice and were promised delivery in two weeks each time. We finally canceled our order but they sent it anyway stating that they hoped we would reconsider ordering from them again.

This winter we've made good use of the internet to research other suppliers. Then I stumbled across DG. With so many other suppliers to choose from, why risk another frustrating experience? I think we'll try someone from the DGT30 this year.

No big deal i told myself i will just plant in the sping. It is now march and i am in zone 6 and i was sent an e-mail that my plants were being sent. They came right away and they looked as if i would have expected. 4inch pots with yellow leaved plants with missing soil from transportation. Even that was fine i can live with that. What i can't understand is the fact that they sent potted plants that arived at my house on march 28th. In my zone 6 the last average frost is between march 30th and April 30th. Today is the 30th and this morning it was 20 outside and it snowed on the 29th. I called and asked why they were sent so early and they told me that this was the time to send to zone 6. I asked them what i should do with the plants since i couldn't plant them for several weeks and they told me to keep them inside and watered. I responded that they advertised the plants would be sent at the exact time to plant. They said that next time i order from them that i should request a time they should be sent myself. I responded that i ordered them last year and that i was looking for them to be delivered last fall.
Long story short i now have 12 potted plants hanging out in my kitchen waiting 3 weeks before i can plant them in my garden. If they advertise that they ship at right time to plant don't believe it and still try to request the correct date for your area yourself. I will still have to wait to see how the stress from shipping and now the stress of being in my kitchen for 3 weeks will effect the plants.

I have had numerous issues with Spring Hill sending the incorrect items. Wrong colors, wrong types of plants in package, broken trees due to packaging. I found out that if you complain or seek replacements, you can be added to their no-send list at all their companies. I have found no satisfaction in dealing with their customer service and they don't return emails about complaints at all. I was not thrilled with the TINY plants in the shipments, but initial offer was 50% off. Initially I thought I'd try them again, but a year later after finally seeing plants come up, I ordered some more at my cost to correct the issues above, for the one's I could not get locally and am even further dismayed with what they sent. MY response at this point

Debbie,
I am beyond having this looked into. Repeated emails elicited no response, and latest shipment leaves me with even more to complain about. The sole reason for my joining this and other post groups at this point is to let other people know what to expect. As of late, your quality has really gone down especially in view of your prices. A bargain bin purchase of Echinecea had 7 pots, 3 of which developed plants and are smaller than the seeds I started a week before arrival. Are you now placing seeds in pots and sending them out? The Wave Petunia that arrived for 5.99 is smaller than each of the local ones I purchased in a six pack for 3.99 for all six. There is no longer any perceived value in your products I am receiving. Sorry, but I am done with Spring Hill, The chance to correct initial issues wasn't handled well, and now is past the point of keeping me quiet and not warning others about what I've received. Better luck with future customers.

I ordered over $200 worth of plants and bulbs from Spring Hill in March 2008. The products were delivered within 2 weeks of my placing the order. The plants were gorgeous, healthy and some very large. The live plants arrived fresh and well watered. Some of the plants cost a third of what they are now selling for at the local Home Depot. As for the packaging, unbelievably expensive; the little 3" pots were packed in plastic boxes that protected the plant. I also received more plants than I ordered.

From my experience, I highly recommend this company.

I feel compelled to write this review after reading all the negative reviews -- which I only read after having placed an order and was scared to death as to what dead monsters would be inside the box. Well I planted healthy plants, and blubs that were starting to sprout. Some of the bulbs had 12" roots on them. If my plants die or don't do well I'm going to blame those roots for reaching out and strangling the other plants or for drinking all the water. I won't be blaming Spring Hill.

I'd like to start by saying that I've worked for Spring Hill (and their affiliated companies) answering the phones for a number of years now. I've also been ordering through them since I started working there. Before that time I had never gardened in my life, and even now I am not what could be called a 'good' gardener. I'm not speaking as any sort of 'official representative', I was just reading the reviews out of curiosity and wanted to add my thoughts on the plants I've ordered, and also try to inform people of what can be expected if there is an issue with their order.

I don't amend my soil - or even prepare it by tilling or anything for that matter, I don't fertilize, I don't spray them for diseases or insects, occasionally I will water them but that's about it. From my first order I did lose a good portion of the plants, mostly due to picking plants that were not suited either to my zone or to the lack of attention they would be receiving. Making wiser choices in my orders after that, I've had a much higher success rate.

Employee orders are filled the same as any other order, and I've been both pleasantly surprised and sadly disappointed by how the plants have looked on arrival. I too have opened my packages and received what appeared to be a dead stick, or plants missing leaves or packages that looked like the postman had been playing football with it. I'll be the first to agree that some of the plants are anything but impressive looking on arrival!

However, following the advice we give to our customers, and the advice of the gardeners who work there who told me to just plant them and watch, nearly everything I have ordered has grown, despite my being sure they were already dead. The one exception was some coneflowers I had to ask for a replacement on. Other than that any plant deaths I have experienced were my own fault. As a customer I have been very pleased with the results of the plants I have ordered.

Regarding the guarantee, I truly believe it to be the best in the business. There may be those who are disappointed because the plants are not reshipped more than twice and feel they are being shorted on the lifetime guarantee, please understand that having tried to get those plants started three times already it is clear that for whatever reason those particular plants that they're sending you just aren't going to do well, and they can only absorb so much of the increasingly hefty shipping costs to continue sending them out when they have so spectacularly failed so many times. Your guarantee is still valid, that is why they can either send you a credit to try something else that might work better for you, or return the money you paid for it. They don't require you to Prove that anything has died, don't ask you to dig up the dead plants and ship them back to them as a number of other companies do, don't set any time restrictions, the most they may ask of you is to please plant them and give them the time they need to wake up and start growing.

I would like to try and explain a little about 'backordered' plants. Every single live plant that is ordered will show as 'backordered' in the order system until they are actually shipping. That is simply because these are not items that are stored on a shelf somewhere where they can just be picked up and shipped out and an exact inventory kept, they are out in the fields being grown. They are working with anticipated numbers of how many plants they expect to have, as well as anticipated numbers of how many people will order that particular plant, and also anticipated numbers of how many of those expected plants will require a reship. Unfortunately there is no way for the phone agents to see where exactly your order is in the line, or how many people have ordered any particular plant before you, and so all the agents can give is a general estimate of when that order will ship. Usually they go out about 2 weeks after the order is placed, assuming the zone is open. If there is unexpected demand for an item, or there is a supplier issue or a crop failure, or a plain old disaster such as the greenhouse collapses and the APX shipping debacle they experienced it can certainly push that expected ship time back.

The closer it gets to the end of the shipping season, the more likely it is to run out of some plants. If there is something similar you may get a substitute, if substitutes are not available the item will drop off the order entirely. Some people are thrilled to get a substitute, some not so happy. For those who are unhappy with the substitute they received they can contact the company and let them know. They would issue a credit to use towards a new order, or refund the money paid for it if that's what they want. As with any other plant sent out, everything is guaranteed.

It is very possible, especially for large orders, that your plants will come in more than one shipment. In part that's because the nurseries are in more than one state and they may very well be shipping from different locations, and also because when the plants are ready to go, they have to go. They can't simply hold them if the other plants on the order are not able to be shipped yet. They need to be hardened off for shipment and they need to fit in the shipping containers.

And yes, they will be small when you get them. It will take time for them to mature and look as lush and gorgeous as the pictures in the catalog. Depending on the plant some may grow to full height and bloom the first season, some may take years to get as large and bloom as profusely as the pictures.

It is definitely an investment in time, ordering plants through the mail. If you're looking for an instant garden in full flower, I do not suggest you order through the mail. But if you decide that mail-order is something you'd like to try, I think this is a good group of companies to try it with. I've found the plants to come through even with my sad gardening skills, and that guarantee can't be beat.

There was a lot more I wanted to talk about, but seeing how lengthy this has already turned out to be I'll just end it with this : I'm not posting this on behalf of the company. I'm posting it because I personally have had success with the products, and because I know for sure that the guarantee is not a scam, it's the real deal.

I shop for bargains and besides their 50% off the total order deals; I also found BOGO deals on the same order. Shipping is reasonable. The packaging was FABULOUS each item was packed in plastic. I am very happy with my purchases.

Ordered 3 All Summer Beauty Hydrangeas which arrived last week. Not only are the plants in good condition, I'd even call them "lush." Of course, ony time will tell how they will perform, but I wanted to post how pleased I was when I opened the box. As healthy as these plants look, I have to believe if they fail to do well it will be my own fault.

I ordered from this company in the spring of 2006. I was surprised (being new to mail order gardening) at how small the plants were. However, now that I have ordered from other companies, I know what to expect. Most of my order lived, and the butterfly bushes I got are taking over. I split the order with some of the people I work with, and their plants did not fair as well though. I think for the money (they are a good deal cheaper than other places on some things) that this is an "okay" company. I have had better luck with other companies though...

Spring 2006 and 2007 I placed orders with this company. The plants were shipped in ok condition and less than half of what I ordered each time lived past the first two weeks in my garden. I ordered the handkerchief iris two years in a row and they died within a week or two after planting each time. I ordered a hibiscus that came bare root, completely dried up and brown. I planted it anyway but it never grew. The lenten roses I ordered had less than a 50% success rate too.
The good thing about this company is they have given me no hassle about replacing plants that die.

Say what you will about Spring Hill Nurseries, but we bought one of their Perennial Garden collections over ten years ago when we bought our house. Some of those plants are still producing and have given us years of outstanding blooms. In particular, it is the only supplier where I have found the tall 48" (although ours was more like 65") Belladonna Delphinium which was absolutely spectacular for several years. They take a couple of years to come into their own and Delphiniums are short lived plants anyway but while they are in their prime, they are gorgeous. I'm ordering some again this year (the seeds I collected and nurtured ultimately failed) and hope others will consider doing so too because they seem to be hard to find and may become unavailable.

I purchased several plants from Spring Hill in Spring of 2007. They arrived very healthy, and within the time frame they had promised. Unfortunately we had an incredibly hot summer, and very little rain. Some of the plants didn't make it. I called Spring Hill, and had replacements within a few weeks without trouble. I am very excited to see how my young plants grow this season! I was very pleased with my Spring Hill experience.

I ordered online. (before knowing about this site) In the confirmation email it gives me the shipping dates and expected time of arrival and they have me listed as being in zone 7a. I'm in zone 9b! They will not change the shipping dates because they "ship at the appropriate time for your area." This would put the plants arriving when the temps are getting well into the 90s each day.
I sent them an email to cancell the order (per their webpage) and instantly received a response saying that one of their "world class customer service representatives" would contact me within 48 hours. 3 days later I had no response so emailed them again and attatched the original email. It took another 3 days before I got 4 emails from them (all identical) saying my order had been cancelled.

PLEASE, if for some reason after reading all the ratings here, you are still considering ordering for this company, check them out on the better business bureau website. Check their parent company, Gardens Alive, Inc. The record speaks for itself.

Finally a place to vent about this scam:
I was new to gardening, I got their catalog, I was impressed with all their pretty pictures, I placed a rather large order.
In the order were: daylilies, hosta, iris, a few shrubs, and other assorted perennials.
What I got was: bags of twigs that were dead, tiny fans that were moldy, iris that were green and boggy, and roots that were brittle enough to break upon taking out of their bags...the entire package smelled moldy and mildewy.
What I did: I attempted to call every number the company had, 877, 800, 866, to no avail...emailed the company, no response.
I finally went to a magistrate, filed a complaint, and sent it to the BBB. I never got a refund, nor any other remitance from this company.
I am just stating this from what happened to me, but, buyer beware, be very very aware!

As of April 22, 2008, we have received no response from the customer."

The name remains the same as when it was one of the most respected nurseries in our area, but that is almost the only thing that hasn't changed in my opinion. They have almost constantly shipped us the wrong plants, nearly dead plants and or too late in the season for successful fall planting. A specific example is an offer for Japanese Irises including "Shogun and Pink Lady" which we have tried to obtain for 3 years. The initial plants lived but when they bloomed were obviously not the varieties ordered. The replacement arrived far too late the next season to establish themselves before winter and thus did not survive. After many calls and e-mails we were told that the varieties in question were no longer offered and a refund was issued.

In the next catalog the varierties were again offered so we ordered again for fall delivery. When they failed to arrive as requested in September, in time to establish themselves prior to cold weather, we made plans to winter them in our greenhouse. We were willing to do whatever we could to add these two varieties to our collection of well over 120 varieties of beardless Irises. If there is a spark of life in the plants we pretty much know how to care for them in most any situation. With no indication as to when they might ship, on December 3rd. we checked again and were informed that our order had been cancelled and they would not accept orders from us in the future because, " It appears that our company's products are not a good match for you, and we regret that we have been unsuccessful in satisfying your gardening needs." So much for their "lifetime gurantee of satisfaction".They didn't need to blacklist us because, given the apparant misrepresentations of products and unbeliveably poor service we will never order from them again and advise others to avoid dealing with Spring Hill as well.

Interesting story with this one. I purchased 3 fans of 'Autumn Red' years ago, in 1996, from Springhill Nursery. I just fell in love with this flower. It bloomed for almost 3 months each year! One year I tried counting all the blooms from one day on the three plants ( I had planted them in a triangle) and I lost count after I had reached 100! This is absolutely true.
As sometimes happens, we decided to move and in all the confusion, I forgot to dig up my 'Autumn Red' daylilies. The new owners just loved them, also, so that was that.
Four years ago I orderd three 'Autumn Red' from Springhill once again and waited for blooms, only to see they had sent me 'Frans Hals' daylily, three of them. I called Springhill, they sent three more.....I waited again..I had to wait until.the next year, and when they bloomed, they were not 'Autumn Red'....pretty little pink flowers...but not what I orderd. I had also ordered three 'Bright Eyes' Tall Garden Phlox and they sent me some other pink colored one. It's pretty, doing well...but not what I had ordered, not 'Bright Eyes'.
This past March 2007, I was in Wal-mart's Garden Center and they were selling bags of daylilies, three to a bag. They had a bin of 'Autumn Red' daylilies and there was no stopping me from purchasing a bag. I took them home, potted them up (there was four in the bag) and watched them grow. I put them in the ground the beginning of May and they were blooming by the end of June! Bloomed up to the end of August!
That was it for my relationship with Springhill Nursery.....never again.

After I posted my original comments regarding Springhill Nursery, I was contacted via DG-Mail by Donna from Springhill's Customer Care. She apologized for all the trouble I have had with my orders in the past years, and asked if I would send her my name, address, and account number I had with Springhill. She wanted to check into my orders and offered to reship or refund me for the wrong items I had received.
I gave her the information she wanted, plus the order numbers from a couple of the invoices I still had. I told her 'thank you' for her time, but there was no need to reship or refund anything, since the 'wrong plants' were still alive and growing. As I told Donna..."All I had wanted, at the time, was what I had ordered and paid for."
She replied to me again, via DG-Mail, and apologized again for all my trouble. She wanted to send me a gift certificate for me to use on any of their items, since I said there was no need to reship or refund me for anything.
I was, quite frankly, amazed! I thought this was very nice of her, and it showed true concern over how their customers are feeling. I emailed her back, and told her that if she would like to send a gift certificate, then I would use it in good faith.
I honestly never thought I would order from them again. Donna's commitment to try and make things right have made me want to give Springhill another try. To me, it says alot for their Customer Service personnel.
I will let you know how it all turns out. With this info posted, I am changing my rating to Neutral.

Today I received a $20 gift certificate in the mail from Springhill Nurseries, just as Donna had promised. I am going to use it when I receive their Spring catalog, if I still get one since I haven't ordered from them for ahwile. I guess I better go to their website and request a catalog.

I will keep you posted on how the plants turn out.
I wll keep my rating at neutral until then.
I still think this was very thoughtful of Donna. Springhill should feel very fortunate to have her working for them.

Placed my order for an area to be covered by Irish Moss. Based on the space it called for approximately (8) flats or 48 indivdual plants. The order was placed in August, 07. It arrived Nov. 9th for the "fall" shipment. Price in total was approx. $80.00. What came was a small box with EIGHT, small individual plants. Obviously some error was made and when I called them they agreed that a mistake had been made and that I was to have received 48. Unfortunately, in order for them to send me what I ordered in the first place, I would have to now wait for the next upcoming shipment in the SPRING! I told them this was unacceptable and to credit my card for the difference, minus the eight plants. They said they were sorry, but then discussed some other flowers they had a deal on and I wouldn't have to pay shipping, just the retail cost. I was amazed. Perhaps they should spend more time trying to get people's orders correct and sent to them in a timely fashion, as opposed to trying to sell me something "new" I don't need.
