I am going to try my best to make it up there... but the fathers day weekend ... the thought is kind of killing me... going to have so many people over the next day... and it is a lot of driving.. don't want to be shot and not be able to cook
Coffee Break #10 - Summer in Spring
I just had the distinct pleasure of 'intercepting' Louise and Hank on their northward migration and meeting them for coffee. Wonderful people, as so many of you already know. It was great to meet them in person. They are having a fantastic trip and send their regards!
What did you do? Stand on the side of the highway with a sign? If you're Hank and Louise from DG please pull over?
No - had a sign that read, 'Honk if you're Hank.'
I would do that.
OHHH, lucky you!!! Too funny about holding a sign. ^_^ I am sure they are getting excited about nearing home.
Yes they are. But, as I said, they have had a great time making many stops. I'll let Louise share the great stories. In that past they made it a quicker trip because of the doggie. I met them at a diner in Newburgh - right next to I-84 so they could hop off and back on.
I like the visual with the sign! It's soo nice you were able to meet them!
that's nice Victor.... what a way to meet up
Oh! (waving) hi Louise, hi Hank!
Allison, don't feel obligated to come just because I am a bad mother to my coleus! I'll buy some at HD or someone else will give me one or two - besides, DH has filled my old wheelbarrow in with purple daises (osteospermum)!
Carrie, that's awful! It's easy to get replacements, but it's the principal of the thing. I "saved" some really interesting tree seedlings while visiting the mansions in Newport last week (no, really, they would have gotten weed wacked). I was so excited, they made it back with me and were planted and happy looking. Then I looked today and some dumb bunny had pulled the best one out of the ground and nipped it in two. The pet sitter said my cat killed a mouse in the house while I was gone, and she graciously cleaned it up. Go predators!
Those mansions are something! Two of my friends went to Salve Regina, & their dorm room was in a mansion overlooking the ocean---yeah, I'd get a lot of work done there! What kind of seedlings did you get? And the damage in my gardens right now are from squirrels---nipped off all the tulip blooms & a lily---Also it was very nice of you, Victor, to meet Louise & Hank---kind of a hard trip, coming home without Molly.
Happy State Flower Day PA ^_^
What is PA's state flower?
1933: The Mountain Laurel (Kalmia latifolia ) was decreed the official state flower by the state of Pennsylvania.
And today's article by Sharon Brown is about Kalmia latifolia.
Victor:
I agree with you. Louise and Hank are just the nicest people I have ever met. I count myself as fortunate that she lives only a half hours away, (during our NE growing season anyway), and that their door is always open.
I can't wait for them to get back and settled so Little Miss "M" and I can go for a visit.
We have a NE growing season? (looking outside ....)
I agree. Hank and Louise are very nice people. Victor, I know that diner! It must be the central meeting point for many travellers.
Yeah, the weather stinks today, huh?
Hello Stranger!!!! (Harper) Coming out of the wood work? Good to see you posting! How have you been?
Hey Harp!
Hi Celeste and Victor!! I had the flu for two weeks. It was awful. I'm still dizzy, but feeling better. Who told Mother Nature it was supposed to be so cold?
Been to Mexico, Harp??
Robindog, I got a European Weeping Beech, and two Copper Beeches, and then I THINK a Linden tree. The bunny, or whatever it was, nabbed the Weeping Beech. I stuck it back in the ground, but I don't know. I "saved" a couple of Ginko tree seedlings from a little park in Philadelphia that have come along nicely. I come from a long line of "savers"...my Mom has "momentos" from many places we've visited. Always just a seedling or two!
No. No trips lately. Oh, wait. I went to South Carolina just before I got sick. Doc said that doesn't count.
Careful of the Gingko Drumlin. If you get a female, the berries smell like dog poop all over your yard.
Yeeeeah, that's what EVERYONE is telling me! I'm crossing my fingers that they're both gentleman, not ladies. They're only about 7 inches tall, they'll probably be someone else's problem anyway by the time they bear fruit. Mwaa haa haaa...
Females always spell trouble...
Yep, and female trouble is spelled m-a-l-e.
Lindens smell lovely, I think.
This is to be expected cuz we rule Victor. Grumblings often happen in matriarchal societies. That's ok. We rulers understand.
Good one drumlin!!!!
I have a Linden. I don't think it smells at all.
Maybe cause it's got no nose ;)
^_^
I was not aware you all rule me!!
I had a linden. Had a scent, but not one I liked much. Attracts tons of bees.
We are subtle! ^_^
Maybe I once was in a park or arboretum and smelled something iI liked and saw a sign that said "Linden" and put assumed that was the smell. Plus Brahms wrote a beautiful love-song waltz about "under the linden tree" so I always assumed they must smell beayutiful. All my evidence is conjectural and hypothetical and I would pay myself no attention whatsoever.
lol
I'm glad you are on the mend, Harper, and posting once again. It must have been a rough two weeks, but the Carolinas in the spring is certainly worth the trip!
I saw there was a picture that belonged to you on the homepage this morning. I think it was a bug of some kind........cant remember..
I am not home now, I am tending the antique store down town. The owner went to buy a van with my husband. So I can sit here and chat till they get back...
