It's April - what's springing up for you?

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

Here's another Clematis starting up. It's obviously one with a forgettable name. Please chime in with a reminder anytime. I never, never remember the name of this one.

Here's something really neat. It's a tiny woodland anemone in bloom in one of my alpine containers.

Here's a closeup of the flower. Look at the sweet green stripes on it.

When I look at something like this huge and perfect clump of Alstroemeria getting ready to bloom, my heart literally skips a beat.

Zuzu, you have a wide assortment of flowers. I love so many different ones, it is hard to have a favorite. It is what ever that it at it peak for me.

Do you propagate your clematis? They are lovely!

Teresa

You have so many beautiful plants ZuZu.

Zuzu - so many beautiful flowers! That anemone is lovely with the green stripes! I think the clematis may be 'Nelly Moser'.

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

Yes, Pirl. Nelly Moser is the forgettable name I forgot.

Thanks, JoAnn and Teresa. No, I don't propagate Clematis, or anything else for that matter. I just shop. I'm surrounded by nurseries on all sides.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

...and she is very very GOOD at shopping ! lol

In a time of financial crisis, we all have to do whatever we can to boost the economy, JD. I'm not a spendthrift; I'm just being a responsible citizen.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

I like that reasoning! ^_^

Is that your orange Alstroemeria? I have two clumps from you, one in the front yard and another in the back and they are looking good, really looking forward to their bright blooms.

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

If all of Daves members went out and bought at least 1 plant that would help the economy.

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

No, Sue, it's a different one. It's about a foot shorter, so it doesn't tend to fall down when it gets too tall. I'm really starting to appreciate the shorter ones because they don't engulf other plants.

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

You're absolutely right, Bluegrassmom, and in case some of them can't, I already filled the quota for hundreds of them this year.

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

I didn't take any pictures today, but I did post a thread of about 60 or 70 March and April rose blooms in the rose forum.

Zuzu - beautiful flowers!! I, too, like that green-striped anemone, and all of the others as well! In our zone 10 here, things are perennial in terms of cold, but the heat keeps many things from lasting through the summer. I lose my impatiens, coleus and snapdragons in the summer.

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

I have to plant impatiens and coleus in the shade. Snapdragons hold up through the summer no matter where I plant them. Of course my water bill can go as high as $400 in summer. We have no rain at all between April and November, so that's the price I pay for planting things in the sun.

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Wow, that makes me thankful for our well? We are on city water but I use our well for car washing, watering plants and stuff.

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

I'm on a community well used by about 40 homes. It used to cost $15 every two months, regardless of the quantity we used, but we had to replace the entire system two years ago and it's costing zillions of dollars until the loan's paid off in 40 years.

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

We suddenly got hit by a mini-heat wave. Today it was 91 in the shade in my garden, and tomorrow is supposed to be hotter. No one was ready for it in April, so we spent the day trying to move as little as possible, sort of like this:

The sun was so bright that I only took a couple of pictures. This gorgeous iris opened up.

And my wisteria finally has some blooms on it. It was pruned back so severely last year that I was beginning to think it had died.

It was hot here too, not quite as bad as you but I had some of the roses in pots get their blooms a bit fried.
This beauty opened this morning, a new one for me from another DGer in a trade.

So I early morning watered, took a few pictures and then watered in front in the evening. During the day, I laid around just like kitty.

Front yard has exploded in color, you can see that purple iris in the center.

Gorgeous, Sue. I love the way it's all filled in, like a jigsaw puzzle, with no spaces between plants.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

ZuZu I love your flat cat. Thay are so sweet when they are totally heat absorbed.
Mine follow the sun from window to window in the south side of the house.
Your plants are wonderful. The Iris is really special.

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

Mine were trying to follow the shade today, JoAnn, but they kept falling asleep and waking up to glaring sunlight. Boy, it was hot for April.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

We are having an exceptionally warm April too. I am so tempted to put out my new clay sculptures ,maybe next week.We often get freezes into mid May and night temps now even go to the 30's so no annuals out thats for sure.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

The colors on that iris are wonderful and the position of the kittie tells the story of your unexpected heat, Zuzu.

Sue, your garden is lovely.

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

Now that I'm almost half an hour into May, I thought I'd better post some more April photos.

Here's my favorite pond iris. I have no idea what it is. The Japanese temple in town has a teriyaki feast once a year. Various things are offered for sale there, including water irises. That's where I bought this one years ago. I love the freckles on it.

Here's another one, actually the same iris, but in a different pond.
