im going to start trowing a tantrum if the sun doesnt come out soon hahahahhah
Today's Weather in Your Garden - 43
clouds are here
after checking the weather network the clouds are everywhere hahahahha so now I dont feel so alone hahhaha
Yep---cloudy & cold---still have to get out there, finish raking, put lime on the lawn, & go to lumberyard to pick up new boards for front fence----or take a nap!
ajhahahahahha I vote for a nap wish I could take one have to go down town sometimes this morning leaving soon lol I dont want to go hate traffic
Nancy, that's too funny.
When I was little I would not go to bed till I heard Ed McMahnon(sp?) say "Now Heeeeere's Johnny!"
Cloudy, breezy, chilly, rain expected after 2pm, of course just in time to pick my son up from school.
48 high of 53
Crappy day. Was really raw on the hike. Had a good time anyway. Nice to get back in the woods. 42 and raining lightly.
It wasn't nice but I did do a lot of heavy digging for the new Japanese bed. It is about 35' by an average of 9' wide. I have at least 2 more days to clean out the sod. Poor back. I laid it out with a big hawser, so I could see the shape from the second floor. While on the way to the area for the new bed I noticed a whole bunch of bad deer behavior. They cleaned out a big new stand of crocus. We put some mist net over the area, but it is already gone. grrrrrrrrrrrr. The new bed is in the fenced area, so I can plant crocus there. This is the first year they have munched this group.
Weather looks crappy for the next few days. Rain Patti
43 now and very foggy... going up to 66 and clear for most of the day
It's supposed to be sunny and 60 here today, usually a day off, but I'm on jury duty so won't get to play today.
we'll miss you Deb.
I'll be in the garden .
Grey and rainy here. 48° and only 0.15" of rain recorded.
high 30's here with fog
43 and very cloudy. Clearing later and then more rain tomorrow.
Overcast Temp: 46°F with more rain to come today and tomorrow. Did I say I was sick of this poor performance on Mother Nature's Part.
I am heading out, no matter, in a little bit to continue my digging of my new Japanese Maple bed...... it is going to be a hard few days unless I can con the DH into getting involved. So far he has not shown to much enthusiasm, but he did check out the two new ones that came yesterday with a bit of real interest. I think I can hook him. I started in the middle so I would not be tempted to stop short of the desired area that I laid out with a hawser. Patti
Up to 54, fog has been lifting and sun is coming out. Gonna go out soon and play in the dirt.
That bed looks great, Patti!
Nice and sunny here now, too. I'll be out after lunch.
Low 50's today. I've got daffs about to pop. We're supposed to get wet snow over the weekend. Yuck! Hopefully it stays away.
Victor, send some my way, please. Still damp and cool. 48 degrees now and still overcast. Patti
patti that bed looks like it will be really nice - i like the outline you have there to provide prospective. i've done that when i put in a brick walkway.
Lousy this morning...but then the sun came out, I was outside in short sleeves...it hit 67
Started out with a fleecey vest then took that off after I went back out at 1 pm. Short sleeves. Yeah, baby!!!
Currently 61. I hurt. LOL
Was 68 here. Wanted to much more but fell asleep!
That's a nice size bed, Patti.
Victor, I lied, it is bigger than I thought .. The wide part must be 15'. I will measure it tomorrow. Sun sort of came out and DH, did grab a shovel and we did another couple of hours of stripping the sod. Hate the job. It is 46 now , but I can actually see a tad bit of blue, though we are suppose to have steady rain tomorrow.
Here is the latest picture. I figure we will have it done by Sunday or Monday, in time for the rest of the Japanese maples to arrive. Patti
Looking great. That's a back-breaking job. I don't do it anymore.
that is a huge bed patti - how long is it?
What are you doing with the sod? i usually just flip it over and then cover with more dirt to make a raised bed.
About 60 degrees here. DH was clearing one of the beds except when I needed him inside to find a good sized box for shipping. GD has a birthday today (15) her Mom is the 7th with the other two a week or so later. They live in OH, MN & eastern WA. All of you with younger children, don't raise them to be independent; it causes logistical problems.
My allergies are, too! Worked in the yard & gardens for about 5 hours---I'm dead! But got the truck loaded up with brush to take to the dump on Sat.---mostly rose clippings! Thorny suckers! Put lime on the lawn, planted grass seed, raked more leaves, pruned more roses! Jumper---can't believe snow---it would break my heart at this point.
Thanks guys, it is both of your faults with your Japanese Maple chatter. I am not getting into those mini conifers that you talk about too, ever.
I have guessed that the new bed is about 35 feet long maybe 15' from front to back at the widest which is wider than I thought, My back is beyond gone right now.
Wha about the sod, we have a dip in the front yard where we have had the burn pit for the last 2 winters. It was where a big cedar came down in an ice storm a few years back, so we are dumping some of it there . I will break it up further, seed it, and then spread some straw on it. I should look better than it does now. Our yard is just grass, not a "lawn" and we don't irrigate it unless be are seeding something. I will measure the new bed after we are done as well as the other beds, which I have never measured either.
We have another spot that I am trying to fill too, so it is all going to a good home. It is crappy grass to begin with as this area was all old bramble until a few years back when we cleared it. We never put down a proper lawn. The woods behind was a nightmare of undergrowth, poison ivy, Virginia creeper and coke cherries until we tacked that about 6 years ago. I am excited about the new bed as it should look good year round.
Help, Family squabble going on. My DH wanted to just rent a rototiller rather than strip the sod with a shovel. I thought rototilling it would just create tons of weeds. He also says that when you dig sod to plant a tree, that you should dump some of the sod in the hole upside down at the bottom. Any thoughts about either of these ideas? I won the rototilling fight, which has meant back breaking work. But if the sod in the hole makes sense, I will allow that foolishness to happen. Got to keep my DH happy. Patti
LOL, Iris---my stepson is in Maine, my stepdaughter in LI---& guess who sends all the cards, gifts, etc. t them & their spouses? Not DH!
Too true!!
Wow, Patti---I have no idea about the sod---never heard that----I just usually fill the hole with compost.
Onewish1, lovely shot. Sorry about your allergies. We never got warm. Glad you did.
IrisMa, it is so funny how much cooler we are in the spring than you. Gulf stream. Logistics with one kid is difficult enough for us, hate to try to catch up with more, like you. But if they weren't independent they might still all be living at home with you!
Robin, crossed posted, you got a great bunch of work done. We need to prune more roses as soon as we finish our Big Dig, but DH got the biggest mass of rosa rugosa cut back last week. He is still complaining about thorns in his hands. He had on heavy leather gloves. He can't find the thorns, but he sure can feel them. Like cactus. Here he is about 1/3 done on the 26th. I think he made up the part about putting some of the sod in the hole upside down. Patti
Don't do the upside-down sod thing. Grass is very resilient. Get it completely out say a prayer, cast a spell, do a voodoo (and do it well) - whatever your preference.
Thanks Victor, as I suspected. I am all about the little dance and shout routine. Patti
Grass is a horror. It's one of my biggest problem 'weeds.'
i disagree with victor on this one - i always flip sod and cover it with dirt as i mentioned - there is some grass that tries to grow after a turns of weeding it is gone.
as for sod at the bottom i have heard that the decomposing grass does not do much for the plant/tree - i mix compost and dirt and some fertilizer.
Guess that Red Sox nation grass is wimpy. My New York stadium grass does not die - it's like Freddy Kruger.
