Glenview, IL

Good Morning, Thank You all!!
Chris and Bonjon, What wonderful stories. Thank you for bringing smiles to me!

OMG, Kim, Couldn't believe my eyes this morning, Boohoo...What is with that white stuff out there??

Well, I did have 2 conversations last night! One with Heather, my niece, and then I talked with her mom...Heather is gorgeous too, she sent me a picture via Cell Phone. She is very nervous to meet all of us but excited too. She doesn't remember any of us as she was just 3 when they moved. I didn't expect her to. But she called me from work, she works for a pizza place and is a Senior in HS.
Anyway, my brother is getting married in the summer and Heather will be joining us then and meeting us for the first time! I have to thankful her mom said she can get in touch with her dad when she turned 18, well thats not till summer so I am glad she found him now...I think we will be in close contact from now on!

OK...LOL here is my sprite! Still laughing at the little muppet, oh Jacob now decided it looks like Tigger! LOL, I love Tigger so I guees that ok.

Hey Judy!!!Those are sooo cute.....now go post them on the Polymer thread!!!

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Sun's up here Bonnie. No damages from last night, all we had was some heavy downpour. Kel said I talked in my sleep of getting more rain buckets!
And I have plenty empty spaces too Bonnie.. if you want me and Laura can adopt your 'undecided' babies!!

Laura, you are right, take a piece at a time. Most important thing is to prepare the soil. I was impatient, years ago, I just jump straight into planting.
As for a partition from your neighbour, maybe your DH can construct a trellis for your, and you might be able to plant some vining plants against it.
But having a garden is secondary, when your health gives you limited time to do so.

That's so touching Chris. Funny thing, when I was young, I always tell people that I was 'snatched' by my parents! They were strict disciplinarians, and to tolerate the hurt, I always imagined my 'real' parents looking to rescue me.
Can't believe that she's found through an online social networking program..

Maid M.. how about calling up your son and bake his favorite mac and cheese.... maybe he'd do the cleaning up? AND if it's supposed to rain again, wouldn't that be futile?

Trisha, last night, I played with the pasta maker. Had a little time away from books and fabric. I had fun shaping stuffs!

OMG Judy.. you are incredibly talented. I love your sprite! Can she fly all the way to NC?? LOLOL... and I see your personality already, in her. Way to go Jacob. I see a clay doll company.. Judy & Son.

We know Kim is ready to play in her new garden!! Hope your landlord be kind enough and release you without any additional charges.

Crissy.. red clay dirt.. is just that.. unless you amend it. Maybe it's just good for pine trees :D

Seems that Mike has a lot of energy. Poor kid, when he goes home, he would definitely be climbing the walls, BJ.

Hi Donna, we know you've been busy.. packing and such. Imagine, you move down to Fla, with only Max... and now you're returning with the kids and Bella!! So, don't move back.. you might have to rent a bus!!

Cody, you can keep the azaleas. I shan't compete with you!!!
And I shan't touch fabrics today.. just patterns :D

Hi LK! Planting coleus today?

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

I don't have any yet, no one here sells it, so I am on the hunt for it. Seeds, plants... I will have to make a trip to get some I guess.

Judy, that little fairy is so cute. Hey we all have to start somewhere, and I can tell you that is a lot better than I can do!

I will not be here next week-end. Dad and I are driving to Arizona to see his Aunt, my Great Aunt. Ruby is my Grandfathers Sister, She is the only one left of 13 kids, and I have never met her, so Dad and I are taking a little week-end road trip. Plus I have never been to Tuscan, so it will be a nice get away. It is about a 12 hour drive, so we will leave here Friday, drive for as long as we can, get a room somewhere along the way, and get up to finish the trip Saturday, visit with Ruby Saturday and Sunday, and start the return trip on Monday! Is anyone near there, I can stop and say hello to?

y'all, calm down. not "undecideds"! well, not really. The plants in the line for over a year are because Randall and I are still discussing where I want the holes. I want some trees downed, he doesn't. No point in planting anything until those trees are downed. they will have to lay down right through the middle where the garden path and plants will go, due to power lines on one side and the house on the other side. all work waits around iris schedules, too, of course! irises come first.

Last year bought tons of co-op plants, got 3 carloads from RUs, and some from volunteering at PDN. Then Randall hurt his back digging iris beds, then I went under the weather. So all last year's plants had to wait for this year.

There's more co-op and PDN babies on pool patio, potted, too!

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

Judy... you're sprite is delicious... a Judy original... and too cute.

Bonnie... I wish I had excuses as good as yours... mine seem kind of lame now... so, now I HAVE to clean the sun porch. I have 6 more trees that I want down... but Don disagrees... two of them are actually on the neighbor's property, but really make a mess, and shade too much of my side of the line. Three of them grew too close together, and now share pretty much one trunk... HUGE.... I want all three of them gone. The other one is a stick, about 100' tall... cause it's growing up between two shade trees, and can't get enough sun to actually do anything. The other trees I like...

Hey... I have blooms on my peach tree this year... !!! and the Nectarine tree too !!!

My zucchini seeds didn't come up... was from a zucchini I bought last year, so I really didn't hold much hope for them. So, I bought some seedlings today at Lowes... I've never grown them before... do they climb? or run on the ground? or what?
I also got some onion bulbs, and 2 jalapenos to plant outside the fence.

I think I want some strawberries this year too... never grown them either...

(Cindy) Auburn, CA(Zone 10a)

BJ, zucchini spread on the ground so they can't be too crowded. A good crop of zucchini could spread about 3-4' wide.

Thumbnail by purpbutfly
Raleigh, NC

zucchini are squash, so yes, I concur, they tend to grow like other squash, ground vining. there are bush zucchini, though. I never seem to leave enough space for them to spread. I think I did see someone in England growing them on a net held at 45 degrees to the ground and 5 ft up.

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

Hmmm... after I asked that, I looked it up... thanks... somewhere I read that they can also be staked, and tied to the stake to go up instead of out... wonder if they'd break under the weight of the zucchini ... I'm going to try to stake some and see what happens. The little starts only came in a 9 pack, and there's two little plants to a pod... so, I think 18 plants might be too many, from what I read today.
That's a lovely picture of the Zucchini plants... is that in your garden? I think I'd grow them just for those beautiful leaves.

I got Don all hyped on growing strawberries too... think we'll grow them in a strawberry pot though, and not put them in the ground.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

LK, have a safe trip. I bet it will be a great reunion.

Ok ladies... think I'll try to get some squash/zuchinis going this year too. Do they need shade? Any other veges besides the usual, that I could try that can take full sun?

I'm coughing up yellow phlegm.. so there's an infection somewhere. Drinking lots of fluids. I'm off to bed..

See you all tomorrow a.m..

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

Jaye I always thought yellow was ok until it turned green, green means infection. Maybe I'm wrong, I just get bronchitis and end up taking advair. Feel better hun.

So I got outside today, cut down a small "pine" tree, planted creeping Jenny in the red dirt infested with ants, some Sweet Peas, and Cosmos, dug a ton of weeds then realized I was getting too tired when I started digging up my bulbs with the weeds so I quit. Dave came out while I was in the middle of it and mowed the lawn and cleaned up the beds a bit. He also planted cucumbers and carrots the other day.

I still can't find my camera...

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I really need prayers for our family.....

My Uncle in OK had a very serious Stroke today....we are waiting to hear how he is doing....

Within half an hour of that news Bills brother in law, who is 73, was helping set up for a music event down at the Washington Center...he lost his balance and fell into the Orchestra Pit...he broke both shoulders in back, damaged a couple of vertebrae, and broke all the ribs on the side he fell on....when we talked to them last he was on his way to surgery and they figured he would be in the ICU for at least two or three days.....

Laura is here, we are going to have dinner and put some stuff in the attic before I have to take her home....BBL

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Crissy, better watch out for those ants! There will be plenty around here after the rains. And like BJ, I'm allergic to their bites. Cosmos!! Gotta add that to the garden, for the b'flies!

They were at first clear when the coughs became productive, instead of just dry hacks. Now, a yellow sputum means a start to an infection... I think... is there a doctor in the house?
Darn pine pollens also aggravating the sinuses.

Sleep well everyone!

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Oh so sorry Trisha. Definitely we will include them in our daily prayers.
Gosh, will also say a prayer for you and your family, cause this will certainly increase your stress.

Trisha, we have a church brother who's past retirement age, but insists to keep on working (didn't have to) and do all the physical stuffs. We beg him to learn to just enjoy the rest of his years. But he wouldn't listen... until last week, trying to load up boards.. and freakishly, some boards fell on his feet and broke his ankle in 3 places. His son said "Dad, God has a way to make you rest if you won't".
But yours is a serious matter..

Lisa, please check in will ya? Let us know if you got your boxes.

Carrollton, OH(Zone 6a)

OH Trisha I'm so sorry to hear about your uncle, and Bills BIL will be praying for them both and you all !!!!!!

Hi everyone, tired from all the birthday party stuff 4-12 year olds for 2 days then relatives I haven't seen in about 10 years. Luckily the weather was great after yesterday. We dodged the bullet, it rained all day then turned vedry cold with 25 mile an hour wilds aLL NIGHT. WOKE UP THIS MORNING TO ONLY A DUSTING OF SNOW. (sorry about that) It was melted by 10:00.

Zukes are a short type vine, we grow them every year. I think Black Beauty is the one we always get. They can reach up to 4-5 feet depending on your soil and the amount of fertilizer you give it. The leaves can give an EE a run for it's money on size and it has sharp like edges. We usually only plant 2 or 3 of them suckers and it gives us way more than enough zukes to eat, dehydrate and can or pickle. Love them babies.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Trisha, sending out prayers for the family members. Please keep us posted!
jaye, you need to take it easy, we don't need anymore sistah's MIA! If you think you are sick, please call the Dr, in the morning for an appointment?
Good night everyone. We had a nice evening here, just sitting out back and watching the hummers play for about 2 hours. All that fresh air has made me tired, so I will see you in the morning.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Good night everyone....a little cheer...

Why we love children...
1) NUDITY
I was driving with my three young children one warm summer evening when a woman in the convertible ahead of us stood up and waved. She was stark naked! As I was reeling from the shock, I heard my 5-year-old shout from the back seat, 'Mom, that lady isn't wearing a seat belt!'

2) OPINIONS
On the first day of school, a first-grader handed his teacher a note from his mother. The note read, 'The opinions expressed by this child are not necessarily those of his parents.'

3) KETCHUP
A woman was trying hard to get the ketchup out of the jar. During her struggle the phone rang so she asked her 4-year-old daughter to answer the phone. 'Mommy can't come to the phone to talk to you right now. She's hitting the bottle.'

4) MORE NUDITY
A little boy got lost at the YMCA and found himself in the women's locker room. When he was spotted, the room burst into shrieks, with ladies grabbing towels and running for cover. The little boy watched in amazement and then asked, 'What's the matter, haven't you ever seen a little boy before?'

5) POLICE # 1
While taking a routine vandalism report at an elementary school, I was interrupted by a little girl about 6 years old. Looking up and down at my uniform, she asked, 'Are you a cop? Yes,' I answered and continued writing the report. My mother said if I ever needed help I should ask the police. Is that right?' 'Yes, that's right,' I told her. 'Well, then,' she said as she extended her foot toward me, 'would you please tie my shoe?'

6) POLICE # 2
It was the end of the day when I parked my police van in front of the station. As I gathered my equipment, my K-9 partner, Jake, was barking, and I saw a little boy staring in at me. 'Is that a dog you got back there?' he asked. 'It sure is,' I replied.
Puzzled, the boy looked at me and then towards the back of the van. Finally he said, 'What'd he do?'
7) ELDERLY
While working for an organization that delivers lunches to elderly shut-ins, I used to take my 4-year-old daughter on my afternoon rounds. She was unfailingly intrigued by the various appliances of old age, particularly the canes, walkers and wheelchairs. One day I found her staring at a pair of false teeth
soaking in a glass. As I braced myself for the inevitable barrage of questions, she merely turned and whispered, 'The tooth fairy will never believe this!'

8) DRESS-UP
A little girl was watching her parents dress for a party. When she saw her dad donning his tuxedo, she warned, 'Daddy, you shouldn't wear that suit.'
'And why not, darling?'
'You know that it always gives you a headache the next morning.'

9) DEATH
While walking along the sidewalk in front of his church, our minister heard the intoning of a prayer that nearly made his collar wilt. Apparently, his 5-year-old son and his playmates had found a dead robin. Feeling that proper burial should be performed, they had secured a small box and cotton batting, then dug a hole and made ready for the disposal of the deceased.
The minister's son was chosen to say the appropriate prayers and with sonorous dignity intoned his version of what he thought his father always said: 'Glory be unto the Faaather, and unto the Sonnn, and into the hole he goooes.' (I want this line used at my funeral!)

10) SCHOOL
A little girl had just finished her first week of school. 'I'm just wasting my time,' she said to her mother. 'I can't read, I can't write, and they won't let me talk!'

11) BIBLE
A little boy opened the big family Bible. He was fascinated as he fingered through the old pages. Suddenly, something fell out of the Bible. He picked up the object and looked at it. What he saw was an old leaf that had been pressed in between the pages.
'Mama, look what I found,' the boy called out.
'What have you got there, dear?'
With astonishment in the young boy's voice, he answered, 'I think it's Adam's underwear!'

Life isn't about how to survive the storm;
but how to dance in the rain

(Cindy) Auburn, CA(Zone 10a)

BJ, you can do all kinds of things with zuccini, bread, pickles, freeze it, can it, good in salads, etc. I'm tired going to bed.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Bonjon, the back of my house looks like that right now. I’m waiting till spring to see what survives to replant.

We had a nice day here. Mom and I took the 2 year old I baby sit for a long walk along trails today looking for Treekin and stuff to do dioramas for fairies. We had a lot of fun. I regret that Sage didn’t get to go; she gets to visit with her Grandma, her mom’s mom, on Sundays.

I actually have three Rosemary plants; though it is hard to have too much Rosemary. My DSD loves Rosemary tea and I swear by its health benefits, but I don’t think I could devote much more space to Rosemary; I do need other plants.

Bj, yeah, I know I have to; I just want to wave a wand and have it look like I want it to.

Jaye, my health comes and goes, but as mom said, having a project often improves my health. I thought about a trellis, but I think I want something more solid, it takes awhile for a trellis to really hide anything. I originally came up with stacking decorative cinder blocks, but I’m afraid it would fall over. Now I’m thinking something bracketed to the fence and wall.

I’ve been considering just throwing down a bunch of “toss to plant” seeds and let them fight with the weeds and prime the soil, but I would need to get the stepping stones down or I wouldn’t be able to walk through, and I’m afraid that the weeds would win out.

Morning girls

Jaye to answer you and I am no doctor but yes that is what it means ..yellowish/bright pale greenish is a sinus infection with me.

Trish prayers for you and your family and HUGS

Everyone have a good day and don't play too much LOL

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Good morning everyone.
Breakfast will be of the 'regular' sort today. Milk and hot oatmeal. Flavors come in regular, blueberries, bananas and there's some maple syrup.
A pot of coffee of course, for those that don't want to disrupt their morning routine! :D

Thank you Phyllis. You have a good day too.

LK, I think I drank about a gallon of fluids before I went to bed. This old body practically had to run to the bathroom upon waking up! If it doesn't get any better, I'll be seeing the doctor.

Robin, after reading your post on zuchinnis having sharp edges.. now I'm kinda hesitant to plant them. I'm accident prone and might get my beautiful legs all scratched up!!! Love zucchinis, especially when they're picked not too big. They are sweeter that way. In some countries, they're called "marrow".

I like that last one Trisha!! Got to share that with my email joke buddies. Thanks!!

Laura, then do lots of projects! Activity is normally touted for folks like me... but I get tired so easily :*( No excuses.. got to push myself sometimes. A sedentary life can lead to depression too.

Cody.. so how many roses you have now? Do you have any yellow ones? I want a yellow floribunda so bad..

Cindy, so sorry that your Rick's laid off. Hope the economy picks up soon.

Today, it's off to 'feed' store to get some wheat bales. Ready to prime some for veges.

Sistahs check in will you. Like LK says there are too many missing. If you're lurking, just post a "I'm okay" will suffice. I have dmailed those that we haven't seen for months.. and only one replied.
Say a prayer for Cathy please (catspower).

See me later everyone.. have a wonderful day!

Trisha - thoughts and prayers for you and your family...(((HUGS))) Barb

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

Mornin' !!!

Sheesh... if 3-4 zuke plants produce enough, what on earth am I going to do with 18? Robin, the ones I bought are black beauty too. Guess I need to learn to can some things too... Kathy, where are you? I need some lessons.
Got way too many tomato plants too... so I expect I'll be canning some salsa this year...

Trisha... Bill's BIL accident is critical... I do hope he's going to be alright... that's what scares me so much about Don's job... sounds like what Don has to do sometimes in high places. Will be saying prayers for both of your family members.

Jaye... that yellow stuff is in fact a warning sign of a possible infection on it's way... when it turns green, it's time to go to the doctor... I wouldn't let it go more than a couple days, though... see a doctor.

Well, Don's first order of business today is to stick something down our drain from the vent on the roof and get our kitchen sink to drain right... then, I'm going to hit him up to move all the Christmas stuff off the sun porch... I have a feeling it's going to be a very long day.
Better get started.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Morning everyone!

BJ, you can always make some zucchini bread!

3 eggs
1 cup vegetable oil
2 cups white sugar
2 cups grated zucchini
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
3 cups all-purpose flour
3 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup chopped walnuts

DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 325 degrees F ( 165 degrees C).
Grease and flour two 8x4 inch loaf pans.
In a large bowl, beat eggs until light and frothy.
Mix in oil and sugar. Stir in zucchini and vanilla.
Combine flour, cinnamon, soda, baking powder,
salt and nuts; stir into the egg mixture.
Divide batter into prepared pans.
Bake for 60 to 70 minutes, or until done.

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

Prayer to all of you on the sick and injured.

Bj you can always slice the zuke real thin and dehydrate them to make chips, it's good and better than potato chips. Canning is easy and you'll pick it up quickly. You can never have to many tomato plants, we usually plant about 100 of them. I take an can them in different ways, I also wash and drop them in freezer bags and freeze for stews and such during the winter. Just put 5 or 6 in a bag as you pick them and put in freezer, when you are ready to use them thaw and the skins slip right off.

Jaye don't be afrais of the stickers, were gloves and jeans, it is worth the effort. Or have Kell get them off.

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

Here's a treat for you Bj

To Linda's recipe above add extra sugar, zuke and cocoa and chocolate chips to make a brownie like cake.

3 cups sugar
4 eggs
3 cups zuke
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
2 teas. cinnamon
1/2 cup cocoa
1 cup choco chips

add with the rest of her ingredients. Follow her directions and before you put in the pans add the cocoa and chips. It's done when a toothpick comes out clean.

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

Oooo... Zuke Chips... sounds like we could market something like that... I'm going to have to invest in a dehydrator too.
100 TOMATO PLANTS? Sheesh... I'd never be able to use that many tomatoes... I think I have enough with 6... only had 3 last year, and was giving them to neighbors... only 1 cherry tomato plant, and still had more than enough... planted 4 this year. I gave a lot away last year because I didn't can anything... this year, I'll be putting them away for the winter... Also gonna have to get that chest freezer plugged in and see if it still works... haven't had it plugged in since we moved here.

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

Ooo... sounds good... I'm saving LK and Robin's recipe... sounds like something I can also make up and freeze... bet it would be good with coffee in the morning.

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

Robin... so, is that 3 ADDITIONAL cups of sugar? total 5 cups of sugar?
TOTAL 7 EGGS?
5 CUPS OF ZUKES?

Lancaster, OH(Zone 6a)

Morning Ladies

Whew had a very very busy day yesterday..

Things are moving along with geting everything prepared.. I talked with my SIL who just wen through forclosre and filed bankruptsy in Lancaster and was asking aboout how hard it is to find rentals. She said she found one with no issues and in a week they were moving in.. I couldnt believe it was so easy for them so I am hoping it will go as smoothly for us..

90% of the kitchen is packed up and ready to roll out when we go with the xception of a few pans I left out for cooking. Our closet has been sorted, cleaned and packed. Th ekdis are home for the week so I will be going through their losets and having fashion shows to be sure everything we take fits them.. lol
Tony tried to go to school wearing pants that were way to short on his leggs.. lol Tristen has dresses that need to go from being to short and shorts that are just way to little.

The truck is almost all primer now and looking so much better with new tires on it.. I love walmarts tire center. We got all 4 new tires for right at $330 and they are very nice tires.. That old truck has never riven or ran as nice as it has in the last 2 weeks with everything we have done to it. Max spent the entire day yesterday sanding on the drivers side preparing it for primer and now we only have to finish the tail gate and the hood - hopefully today..

Making phone calls today for Tonys medical records and Tristens shot records from the doctor. I printed out all of the registration papers for the school sup home so they will be filled ut and ready to hand to them. I also have to check in on Tony getting a physical from his specialist for a final re-check on his hip and tailbone. He also has to go in for a 1 year check up for the plate they put in over where they took the biopsy from his skull before we go.

Funny how time flies when you are looking forward to something.. LOL who would have ever known I would look forward to moving again..

Sorry for rambling but I want to try to keep you all updated and time is going by fast..

Lots of recipes here for them too...

Morning Ya'll!! Zukes are delicious!

All the recipes sound good, I just might have to try one or two!

I'm praying for your families Trisha. I am so sorry about all of the health problems and severe injuries. ((((((hugs))))))

My house was built on a huge ant colony. I started digging in the red clay right in front of my front bedroom where an ant hill 'was' and tried to get to the nest, never did. They have tunneled under the foundation. I hope they don't get into the wood of the house, I feel like sending Dave away for a couple of days so I can get a pest person out there, also get Hanky Bros to give me an estimate on gutters. Dave won't let me do it because he can poison the ants and "they're not going to get into the wood of the house" and he doesn't want gutters on the house cause he doesn't want to clean them. Hankey bros will clean the gutters themselves and he doesn't have a license to buy the industrial strength ant spikes for the ants. Just irritates me.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

You can get some powder from the feed store, or even wal mart, that the ants will carry back to the queen and kill everything! Just make sure it has acephate in it! It really works. It smells like cooked cabbage gone bad, but the smell will go away in a few days.

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

You know, I forgot about all of the tricks my grandfather used to use, of course that was in CA and the ants aren't near as aggressive there as they are here, but he used to put some sort of sugary substance on the ground and spread a little sulfur powder around it, so the ants would walk into the sugary substance and get it on their feet, walk that way back to the queen, they would eat the sugary substance that was also laced with sulfur. I don't know if you can even get sulfur anymore, it's been a long time ago.

I'll look into that powder. I planted a Creeping Jenny on the area I dug.
