Shes about to....#44

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Debra, you have salmon colored monardas?
Took today off, good timing, it started raining at noon, guess non raining put the skies opened. We got about 5 inches of rain! The ground was starting to crack which I find hard to believe since we have had lots of rain. Lots of thunder and the such!

My iris were just starting to bloom, but the winds and rain I am afraid have done a number on them. Had the brugs out under the tree, should of drowned the mites...LOL can only wish!

The worst combination in the world is ee's and brugs at least for mites.....You can not win. Next year just a few select ee's will be in the garden room, the others will either go dormant or find new homes. Lisa, they just feed off of each other, and like you I am just sick of the mites.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

guess I am lucky no bugs, just hail and rain again.. sheeese! the salmon colour is in the four o clocks.. when they make a salmon monarda I will buy them all ... LOL I love the colour of salmon
LLindaKay, I will gather some monardas this weekend and send them to you on Monday...do you want any begoinias?
or cleomes? or I.batatas? or violets?

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

let me look them up.

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

I am trying to figure out what a monarda is .. is that the pretty pink picture?... and begonias are so expensive here.. was looking at 4" pots of them yesterday.. little tiny things for $3.99 are you kidding? There was more dirt than plant in those pots.

The plants with the spider mites are starting to look better, we have had humidtiy above 20% for the past 2 days and it has given me a chance to help the plants along.. ANY humidity helps.

I am so happy you got some rain.. it sprinkled enough last night that I cold sort of feel it when I was walking on my driveway.. does that count as rain.. it DID make it to the ground.. barely.

Is this your batata? full sun.
I can't find cleomes?

Are these full sun plants?

Oh sure, just fill me a box, and I will find a spot for them! LOL
I want to make some hanging baskets, and this sounds like it may work?
Thanks

Linda Kay, Cleomes are full sun and will reseed. I can't get mine to do anything until it gets hots. They will bloom from July on.....I know they will be in bloom in August and September around here. They like hot and try. I have pinks and purple and they dance in the wind.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Sounds good, anything that can take full sun! I don't find anything here on Dave's about them, does anyone have any pictures?

LK

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/search.php?q=cleome

Is this what your talking about?

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

yes Linda, thats it... I have lavender queen and White, they are babies.. I figure if you want a nice assortment of full sun plants ( cleome, monarda, Blackie I. Batata, ) and a couple part sun ( begoinias) I will need a large sabe for about 4.50.. and Tammie do not buy any begonias I have some I can send you, they are babies , but they will grow fast..
the I.batatas are commonly called sweet potatoe vine..

here are some of the plants I am taking to the farm and art market.. except the little herb pot.. my DD got me that last year.. All these cool baskets I bought at the goodwill for like 15 dollars for about 30 of them all kinds and sizes..

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

oh, we are using food cans as well , we will decorate them before it is time to go there, by the time our gig is here, there won't be any flowers available to plant like these.. see the can to the left?

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Oh my goodness, you stay busy! Love the recycled baskets too!

LK

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

Debra, I believe you have every kind of plant available! My MIL had an angel wing begonia and I didn't take very good care of it now I wish I had it. My camelia my son bought me several years ago is finally putting out some very good smelling blooms. Bought some malathion yesterday and I'm going to war with worms, and whatever is on my camelia.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

awww, I do love growing from seeds u guys.. thats my favorite, I haven't grown any camelias, I havn't grown alot of stuff.. this year I have tons of "new" things, like brugs..this was a seed the little guy in the middle is a b.arborea

Taters, cleomes are the best plant. Hummers and those big moths that look like hummers love them. They can take the heat and sun and wind. I mean like the triple digit heat ,sun and wind of south central OKla. So they will do fine for you. They do reseed beautifully. I got some seed from Wildseed Farms in Fredericksburg.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

That sounds nice, I will be looking forward to geting some to grow here!
Thanks for the info.

OK, down in the 40's last night, need a little more warmth at night. Back at work and a beautiful day....funny how that works.

Hope you all are doing good.

I am still fighting spider mites! Tired tired tired!

Anyone have any brugs blooming?

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

I have one about too, maybe in a week or so? Still don't know the color, but I think it maybe a yellow one? I will keep you all posted!
LK

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Hi everyone:
My brugs are out there in the cold (went down to 40 or even below in spots) and they look like they are all crying. Droopy, etc. I watered them and the sun has come out so I am hoping they will survive. The wind and cold is not good.
I am so sick of this weather. I have plants to go to the field but I am afraid to put them out.
Tropicals are on the South Deck all looking like they want some warm weather.
Hope you are all in a better frame of mind than I am. I am one cranky old woman today because of this weather. JB

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

JB, wish I could send you some of this warmer weather! Sorry to hear about the brugs looking droopy, but don't give up on them yet, They are pretty tough. You may have to trim them some, but they should be fine.
LK

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Hi Linda, they are just babies and are sitting up against the greenhouse on a protected side and they still got cold. The weather report called for even colder tonight. I am just beside myself. I think I will take a shower and try and relax and forget about it. Grumble Grumble....JB

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

We were in the 40's last night and 30's before that so it is heading your way JB

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Passing you the Bailey's. Have a nice shot or two, and that will help you relax! LOL It is really good in a cup of coffee!

LK

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

If I had a Bailey's in coffee, I would be asleep before I hit the pillow. I do like Irish Coffee big time. I love Bailey's over ice, but put them together and Wow. Nite Nite time.

I am not a big drinker. My family being Spanish background always had wine on the table and Grandma made her own beer. I grew up with alcohol on the table like water and there is not one alcoholic in my family. Never did I ever see anyone of my relatives actually falling down drunk or even drunk, and no one ever had a driving and drinking violation. as you see so much of that today. It is so sad that moderation is so difficult for so many people. I respect people who do not drink or smoke. My Mother was one of those. I quit smoking when I went to work as Executive Director of the American Cancer Society. It was either quit smoking or quit job. I choose the smoking. LOL. Never did like the taste of them anyhow. LOL Enough of this off subject chatter. I apologize but I am old and love to chat.

The weather is still my biggest problem. I am about to run outside and just scream.
I am so anxious and annoyed I want to throw something or break something. No, I do not kick the dog or hit the birds, I just moan and groan to my friends, who wish I would just shut up and go away. I am doing that now. JB

Palestine, TX(Zone 8b)

Happgarden, this was my cherub the first week in May. There were actually 28 blossoms. They have since dropped and she is loading up for more. I have had single blossoms on my rooted planted cuttings on my NOID white, Monster white, Daydreams, and Miss Emily McKenzie. There are buds on the America Pride yellow and more on each of the above. I so love this plant.

Just browing thru the threads and saw you guys still have this one going! Decided to pop in and say hi. It sounds like everyone is busy in their gardens. Gorgeous pictures Debra.

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

If anyone's monster white gets big enough for a small cutting I would much appreciate it since mine was ran over.....that was my first brug and I so miss it.

Debra, I am jealous you must be just far enough south that all that stuff comes back. I have to dig in the fall and replant in the spring. Would love to leave daliahs and all in the ground.

I complain about my job but I am glad I have one and I am working. Could be alot worse. Course if I were old enough to retire that would be great or let's see win the lottery......LOL

On vacation and been busy all morning taking stuff out of the garden room and planting pots, dumping mulch, you name it. Perfect day!

Later all you guys.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

hi everyone, got home from work and my hubby announced I had new blooms.. didn't get pictures of all of them taken cuz I had to water, but my monster white is going great guns so should have tons of cuttings this fall.. here is my dahlias that came back, and this is year three,,, these came from seed originally.. any of you that got my mix got some of the seeds in there.. .. Happ, here is what I do.. I rake all of my leaves in the fall to the flower beds as they fall... the flower beds are covered with leaves all winter until it is safe.. I usually wait until I see their heads popping up thru the foot of leaves that they break down to.. the compost ...is good it gives heat under the cold... I see everyone raking and bagging their leaves, and I pile my flower beds high with them and water over them to weight them down. then I throw bags of coffee grounds on top of that ( I get them from my work place) this works, folks, truly it does.. here is a nice one I am betting it is the peach coloured one in there with my monster violets//

Thumbnail by joeswife
Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

I will try that Debra. I actually take leaves from the people I work with (except those that spray their yard) and put them on my roses for the winter and put the rest in my compost corner. I could get lots of coffee grounds from work, never thought about that.

Thanks for the tips.

Look at that beautiful back yard. I bet your yard smells like heaven when those brugs bloom, along with everything else?

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

WE HAVE RAIN! 1/4 inch since 6:00 this morning!!! I was running around in my nightgown moving plants out into the rain .. neighbors on their way to work probably thought "there goes that crazy lady and her plants!" I got soaked and did not care a bit.. it was just slow drizzle.. the best kind.. sprinkled a couple times since.

I had just filled my 30 gallon rain barrel with tap water 2 days before so I took a bucket and emptied .. in the rain to let the spout off the roof fill it.. .. it is now almost full with precious rain water... every little bucket I own, I placed anywhere water was coming off the roof. Now, most are almost full... probably collected about 45 gallons total including the rain barrel.. ... WONDERFUL rainwater!!!! AND.. ... we have HUMIDITY!!! LOL

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Tammie so happy for you to get rain. I know it is awful when it gets drought, the plants seem to respond so much better to rain water than tap. I live on a well and they are still happier with rain water. Course they get watered better with the rain also. I need to make some rain barrells for this summer.

Debra your gardens are beautiful. I know you must love sitting back there when you get a chance.....if you are like me before you know it you are up and doing something tho....LOL I love those white lilies, do you bring those inside?

I am doggggg tired. Got up at 6 and went outdoors and probably all together have sit down for an hour maybe. Didn't even eat lunch. I planted more, cleaned more outside, moved plants from the solar room out, watered everything really well, and then cleaned the water garden and it was a mess!!!! I figure I am sunburnt along with being tired. The water garden is on the west side of the house but if I am messing in water I just a soon it be warm.....don't do cold. I have yellow water iris blooming and purple water iris blooming. I have two buds on the water lilies (if I didn't break them). Started redoing the waterfall for the 19th time. I can't seem to let it alone.

Here is the vase I took to work on Monday. Love the iris and this peony is great and it is huge!

Happ, those flowers are beautiful. Stopped at the local 99 cent store and got 2 crocosmia blubs, now lets see if they will grow. Also 6 grape hyacinths blubs. Pictures always look so pretty. I don't know anyone who bought bulbs from the store so can't ask if they will grow for me. I'll pot them up and see what happens.

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

OH, Happ.. how beautiful! .. and Samigal.. crocosmia at the 99 cent store! did you get me some? I really miss that store!!!!! It was one of my favorite places to browse when I lived in Los Angeles. It rained again today and I really had fun pulling more plants out.. filling buckets.. I now proudly have about 100 gallons of rain water! My plants are going to be happy for a while. I think we got almost 1/2 inch for the day and a lot of very happy yards and plants.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Pegi I got 12 crocosmia at a closeout as well as freesia, hiyacynth, liatris, and a bunch more from our supermarket that is moving to the new improved one.. mine are up already, also the sllium i planted late is starting to bloom, those lillies in the barrel are called peruvian daffodil, u can get them in walmart, but these I dig up,
Happ if you can find a way to come down here on May 30th ( saturday) for the plant and seed swap I am hosting, you will be able to take home some cuttings and plants, and cool seeds, tropicman will be there along with some other gardeners, it is from 10 to 3 in the green zone at my work, inside nice and cool, and I would love to spend some time with you. it takes me 2 and a half hours to drive t KC if I go fast LOL.. wichita is 20 miles from derby and straight south on 54.. let me know..
Tammie so happy you got rain and I too do the crazy lady in a bathrobe dragging buckets, tubs, plants and even trash cans to catch the rain water.. then I bottle it up with empty water jugs I save for that...wish I knew where Bonnie was, last I heard she was moving to KC..would be cool to have her come down here.. maybe cat could come with? ( from richhill, mo?)
here is my orchid iris I have waited almost 6 years to bloom, it came from my great aunt effies and Grandmas house a long time ago, then to Missori with my mom, then to me before she died.. worth the wait..

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

Yep, that 99 cent store is one of my favorite places. I haven't bought blubs there before so really I'm taking a chance on them growing. I'm always checking out the plants that are marked down at Lowe's too. Some of them look pretty sad.

Upside down tomato plant is doing great, I've noticed a couple tiny tomatoes on it. They are beef steak and I hope the branches don't break when they start getting bigger. My problem is watering it. My sun hung it so high and I'm a little leary about climbing up the ladder even if it is only 3 rungs.
