Shes about to....#44
Miss me?? I miss you all ^_^. I need to check the date from last year and come up with a friendly game to play...whaddaya think???
I like games!
LK
Me too! Barb
Yea! Even my DSL was slowing down loading that last thread.
I have a verascolor peach brug ready to be repotted into one of those big rope handled tubs! Finally.. I hope to have a big brug this year! Wish me luck... just think of all the potting soil this is going to take! My mother bought me the tub last weekend. I am soooo excited. Been babying this brug all winter anticipating this move. .... also eying the pot it is in for another growing young brug to move up into it! LOL Always thinking ahead!
A game... always a bit of time for a game...like many of our brugs... "guess what color I am going to be!" LOL
Hello Kim, I am just across the river from you and South a bit. Did you have snow yesterday in Philly? It snowed here almost all morning and I was about to loose it. I swear I was not ready for that, but I guess as the Amish would say, it was the onion snow.
Only problem is, I do not grow onions.
Tammy, you should have a great time replanting that big baby, but you had better do it where you want to keep it permanently because you will never lift it without a forklift. :0
Linda Kay, I would love to have one that big. I can just smell it now.
It is time for my afternoon break. 4PM already and I have not had lunch. I was getting out all the summer silk flowers to start making cemetery cones and crosses to sell for Easter. That needs to be done before April 1st. I had better get busy. I have spent so much time on planting seeds and brugs and cuttings this past month I am on behind. I am finished now.
When you ship cuttings to people, please describe how you do it. I know how to fix the bottoms, but do you ship in plastic sleeves or paper and no plastic? I forget how my scented geraniums were packed. I know they were individually wrapped in some sort of tissue, kleenex, toilet or whatever and seran wrap around that to keep it moist, but I do not remember how they were packed. I am getting ready to ship some cuttings of my black pussy willow to my friend in NY state for her birthday next weekend. Any suggestions? I ship plants all the time, but not cuttings. She wants cuttings, so here I am, asking questions. Thanks in advance for your help. JB
When I ship my cuttings, I wrap the rooted end, or soon to be rooted end, in a wet paper towel, then place that in a large ziplock baggie, and in a box, just big enough for the cuttings. I have shipped some in a padded envelope also, with no problems. I always ship priority, so it will get there in a few days! So far, I have had no problems doing it this way.
LK
Linda, that is the way I would think it would be the best way to do it except some people are talking about some gas (darn I do not know the name of it, I was not paying attention and I know it begins with an E) being caused by plastic. I am old and maybe I misunderstood. LOL I keep wanting to say the stuff they put in gasoline. I know that is not it. I hate being so stupid, I just can not remember the name.
I ship my plants in plastic floral sleeves with the tops open for air and the bottoms all packed in paper towl and tissue to hold in the dampness. I never have a problem because I too ship priority. If I can find the list that was talking about this I will come back and tell you. I am not sure it was not on this list.. oh crap.
Oh we had snow JB I just tried not to see it lol!!! I have one of those tubs too Tammy I think I will put Cherub in i I lotst all the brugs that I put in the basement : ( Long story...but lesson learned. I will miss MEM and First Belle the most..sigh. But I have a bunch of different cuttings and seedlings growing to keep me busy.
How long does it take the brug to bloom after you have cut it back and it is growing again? I have beautiful leaves, once in awhile a new leaf falls off, but otherwise it is growing like a good girl. Do I have to name it? I name everything else, so I guess I will. Anyhow, I have buds and blooms on the gardenias ,hibiscus. bougainvillea and jasmine but none were cut back as far as the brug. This is my first time at this so please be kind and patient to this old gal. LOL JB
LK, thanks so much for the new thread.
Kim I have a Cherub too. She is desperately wanting to get into the ground. I told she had to wait until the first weekend of April. It bloomed for me over Christmas. I love that brug. I'm sorry you lost others. I know that was disappointing.
Bloom time depends on a lot of things, the amount of fertilizer it gets, the amount of watering, and when ever it "Y's". Once it starts growing good, and especially when you can see little pea pod type buds, I watered mine twice a week with miracle grow fertilizer. Some use Ken's recipe for fertilizer.
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/803019/
But once it blooms, you will not be able to keep your nose out of it! They all have thier own different smell. No two brugs grow the same way, or speed. Falling leaves is normal, as is leaves turning yellow. I just keep them plucked off. I also keep the little side leaves up and down the stalk picked off. Some let them grow, for a more bushier plant.
Please don't feel like you are bothering us with questions. You should have seen all the questions I asked last year, with my first brugs! That is how we all learn.
LK
Thank you LK...I will be patient and keep that baby happy. JB
Had high winds yesterday and I worried about my brug because have some large buds on it. No real damage, only lost 1 bud, and the others look like they are about ready to start producing the lovely blooms. I should see some pretty pink flowers very soon.
DH found some odd sort of tool at the thrift store and when we got home he showed me just what it was for. It came in 3 pieces, an extention rod and two pieces with round discs on it. He attached it to a drill then went to an area where nothing was growing and drilled the nicest hole for planting flowers. It works just great and no more having to dig the right size hole. We did end up with a good deal. I wish it would pull up the weeds too.
I missed out on a great buy today. Went to the local 99 cent store and saw so many people with pots of mini roses in their baskets. Of course when I checked there weren't any left. If only I had gotten there sooner. They were a pretty pink and looked so healthy. Where can you find a great plant like that for 99 cents. I checked another store on our way home, but they didn't have any either. I guess it wasn't my time to get one. Found a couple other nice plants, have no idea what there are. You don't get names of any plants you find in that store.
They kind of look like a daisy to me.
Are those gerber daisies?
They sure are pretty.
LK
that is what they look like.. for .99 cents.. you got a steal! more like $2.50 here! What a great buy.. I sure miss the .99cents only store... we have dollar tree here.. nothing like the .99 cents only stores...

Ladies, it is time for Brug Growing 101. I have the one big brug and I want to put it outside ASAP. Will it grow in full sun or partial sun?
When you start your seeds, do you wait until you have four leaves or more to transplant the seedling in anothe pot? Do you put it in a large pot or take it slow like most new plants. About two inches increase in size in pot each time. I start my plants out in 2 of 3 in. pots..............then 6 inch then 8 inch, and so forth.
I was so furtunate to have all the brug seeds AuntB gave me sprout. I think three of them are the last to some but I think I had them deeper in the soil. The egg tree same thing.
I will appreciate any help I can get here. Thanks JB
We all have placed them in pots, then set them in different areas around the yar, to see where the happy place is for them. I had mine on the east side of my house last year, with about 4 to 5 hours of morning sun, and all were in 2 gallon pots. They seem to be happy there. But there are ladies here that have them out in full sun, planted in the middle of the yard. That is why I made me the new angel garden.
They will act differently, if they are in the ground, they just get more settled in I think.
As far as transplanting them, I would wait till they get at least 4 or more leafs, then put them in a 6 inch pot, and from there, I would go to the 2 gallon size. They grow pretty fast, and watch the roots, they have a tendency to go out the bottom of the pot pretty quick, looking for solid ground.
LK
Thanks for the ID gals. Sometimes the 99 cent stores get some really nice plants, my luck is getting there when they are all picked over and a sad looking bunch is left. Still pouting because I missed out on the mini roses. They all were pink, any color works great for me.^_^
Pegi, I have been babysitting a giant gerber daisy. It was given to me by an older couple who had no room for it in their apartment over the winter, along with their hybiscus. I thought the darn thing died because the plant looked terrible. It is in a hanging basket type pot and sitting on the floor of my greenhouse..Just too big to hang. It is more than 15 inches around. A real giant pain in the butt plant. Ugly, etc. Every day when I mist or water, I would just give it a drink. Soon it started to show buds in the center of all this ugly green leafy outside, it started to bloom and it has not stopped. I just cut a bunch of them and took them to the couple that gave it to me to keep because they thought it had died also. LOL Here is what it looks like now. Still ugly but blooming like crazy.
nothing ugly about that..
Flowers are pretty, but the leaves look so sad. Well, I'll see what I can do with them. I let them sit in the sun and one of them looked like I beat it with a whip. Brought it in and I hope I didn't neglect it too much. Have to take my brugs outside and let them know that is where they belong. Time to put some of them in bigger pots.
awww I love those things/ my MIL always has some really nice ones.. maybe a drink of epson salt water? with peroxide and distilled water? heck I dunno, that is what I would do tho..
Samigal, that plant was what I thought dead and I just did not have the heart to throw it out. I left it sit on the floor in the GH and watered it daily with the others. That is what happened. I hope it gets new green leaves before I send it home to the owners. Of course, I told them it had died and was reborn when I sent them the flowers. It is a beautiful flower. Good luck with yours.JB
Thanks JB, hope I get some beautiful flowers too. I do think I have a problem with overwatering some plants. So far the leaves are nice and green and flowers are starting to wake up.
Am I lost out here in ciberspace all alone? Where is AuntB? I think I may have a breakdown if I have to be alone much longer. I hope you are all well and happy. Safe from the bad weather and your brugs are all in healthy shape. I am still waiting for mine to do something, but my seeds are all showing signs of life with the exception of two that are taking forever. My Maya seeds are not doing a thing. Not sure if I did them right. I did it the way I was told, Oh well, I hate talking to myself, I get stupid answers when I do. I am going to have a glass of wine. This is driving me to drink. Have a good evening. Hugs. JB
I am just waiting for this cold snap to pass so I can move the jungle back out of my living room... had temps below freezing the past 2 nights... going to be 80 again tomorrow! Guess everything will move back outside. Getting my exercies moving them in and out.
My brug is going to have blooms any day now. I just noticed a nice suze bud fell off not happy about that. But there are three of them that are coming out of their "shell". The leaves aren't looking very well, still looking for the nasty bug that is doing damage. I also have some ivy geraniums that are doing very well.
Looks like we finally will have some blood oranges this year. The last couple of years we had nothing. Blossoms smell so good.
Spring is here and I think everyone is busy with their plants. I don't know if I could cope moving large plants in and out during the change of seasons. I'm just too lazy to thing about doing that.
hey JB I know how you feel.. it snowed so much ere that they closed the dealorship and no work for me today.. YAY! I will have a glass of wine with ya.. as for your seeds, they take time, believe me I have been waiting for a LONG time for seedlings from brug seeds and they have been planted since december and they just popped up mid february..
my back yard this afternoon, sun came out and the ice is n0w melting
Morning everyone, Hey Debra, thanks for the info on the brug seeds. I have a day planned that hopefully will get me caught up and all but ready to open my roadside stand next week, weather permitting. I have noticed the sales on eBay picking up, which is good for a change. Maybe the economy will settle down sooner than we expected. I must say, I wish I had a bottomless pit like the USA Government has when it comes to spending our tax dollars. Would I ever have a great greenhouse and nursery. LOL Being a military wife for years you get used to being flexible, but as I get older, I do not do well with change. So, I am going to hide in my greenhouse until it all goes away. Don't I wish.
Enough of the gloom and doom. Weather seems to be breaking. It is very cloudy and damp and foggy here today and we are hoping for some sunshine and warm temps next week. We had a little rain but nothing like those poor souls in ND. I wonder if Dave is snowed in. I am amazed how much the temperature fluctuates during a 24 hr. period. It is so difficult to keep things even in the GH with mornings being just above freezing and aftrnoons in the 60s. Poor plants are confused. I know I am. Have a great day and stay well. HUgs. JB Can you smell this baby? She is beautiful.
JB, what is your ebay name, so I can go and check out what your selling? Do you have a link?
LK
My eBay store is http://stores.ebay.com/JBs-Birds-and-More and my website is www.JBsBirdsandMore.com.
I thought you all had them before Linda, you may have missed them. I have not updated the plant pictures on the website yet but the prices are updated. I try and make the plants affordable so everyone can enjoy them. Usually the postage is what costs. I send everything priority and give refunds on postage whenever I can get a better deal than offered on Ebay. The people at my post office are great to work with. They have some of my plants too. LOL.
The greenhouse smells sooooooooooooooo good just now. The jasmine are going crazy, some of the new scented geraniums are blooming already, so tiny and yet blooms, hybiscus and bougainvillea...like a tropical paradise on this ugly foggy rainy day.
I just came back from Mass and it is nasty driving. The front is moving in and the mist off the ocean is a mess, plus we are expecting storms. What next? At least no snow I hope.JB
JB you are one very busy lady. Looking at your plants and recognized the bead plant that we call string of pearls. At one time I had a rosary plant and can't seem to find any now. It too trails over the side of the pot, leaves are heart shape and small beads appear on it like a rosary. Funny little purple flowers too. Some call it a string of hearts too.
JB, looks like you have done just about everything? Raising birds, felting, raising plants, and baby sitting sheep! Thanks for sharing your sites, I don't know how I missed them before!
LK
If anyone wants some bead plants give me a yell privately, I will be happy to share them with you. I think they will hold up bare root too. I can send you cuttings . They do attract mealy bugs but what else is new?
When you live as long as I have you get to do alot of things. LOL JB
JB, are they full sun plants, or shade? Or are they houseplants?
Linda, the bead is a houseplant that seems to do well almost anyplace in the house. It just does not like much water. JB
OK, I wish I could grow house plants. I kill everyone. Now if it could go outside, that would be another story.
LK
Where is everyone. Am I lost again? I have not seen a new post in days.
