Mid Atlantic gardens not complete without our furry pals

Near Lake Erie, NW, PA(Zone 5a)

Hart, they are Brussles Griffons. I adopted them after they retired from showing and breeding. They are "velcro" dogs, but I don't let them run outside the fenced in area. But when I garden it that area they are right there wanting to "help".

Holly, so lucky to have some chicks, I can't have them where I live.

Shenandoah Valley, VA

They're adorable, Chris. I like velcro dogs.

What cute chickies, Holly. I guess I won't be getting any more chickens until these die of old age. But when I do, I think I'm going to get mostly brahmas and ameracaunas. The brahmas because they're such sweet chickens and lay like crazy, even in the colder months. The americaunas because I love the blue green eggs and mine have been such good layers and their eggs are huge. Not that I have any complaints about the other breeds I have but these two have been my favorites.

Anyway, if you want a pet chicken, go for a brahma. They are so sweet tempered and love to be petted and held.

My next project is to get some guineas. They just tickle me no end.

Chicken poo is very good for plants but you have to age it a bit first or it will burn your plants.

ahhh like a fine wine....*giggle, giggle*

just want to kiss those babies LG

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Yes, Chicken Poo is good and I remember from before that I have to wait to use it. Jamie has guineas they are a fit, he wanted to let them run loose to eat bugs, but they were going over to the neighbors house so he had to pen them in.

Chris, Mary Chris and Penny are adorable :) Holly, I was at Tractor Supply yesterday and you could hear the baby chicks peeping as soon as you walked through the door! They were so cute, just wanted to pick one up - but sign says: NO! LOL I "kind" of miss having chickens but I definitely don't miss the destruction they caused in the gardens!

My "furry pal" got her very first grooming yesterday! When Phoebe was sick last year she never shed, probably because of the meds she was taking. Foolish me, thought maybe she wouldn't shed - what was I thinking? She IS a long-haired dog after all! LOL She's making up for this year and we've got black fur EVERYWHERE! Figured a grooming might help get rid of it faster - she was a big soft fuzzball when I picked her up yesterday and looks so pretty :) I wish I had a picture - I bought her a new toy and she was laying in the middle of the living room - shimmering black fur laying in the middle of a pile of white fluff - the toy was destroyed within 10 minutes! LOL

LOL isn't that the way it always is re the toys!!!

Chickens?? I know Hart lives in the country, but do you, Holly? I didn't know you could keep chickens in your neighborhood. I know we can't. I would love to, though!!

Ladyg--those little shaggy rascals are adorable!! I always loved fluffy/shaggy/raggedly/bearded dogs. I've seen those kinds before but didn't know the name of them.

I took this at a neighbor's house on our walk yesterday. She has the most wonderful tulip & daffy display each Spring.

Yes, I do live in the country. Years ago we had all kinds of animals, horses, goats, pigs, chickens, you name it we had it at one time or another. Not that my place is big, the house, barn and corral are on our acre. There is a small piece of land behind us that wasn't being used and Ric arranged for us to clear and fence it as a pasture in return for some general yard work for the neighbor. We had an old farm next door (a development now) and the farmer wasn't using one of his fields, he allowed us to use it as a riding ring setting up jumps for Jen to practice her jumping. We were very lucky to have such nice and generous neighbors, it allowed us to do things we otherwise wouldn't have.

All that hard work now look at those proud ears!!!!!!

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

ROFL - sooo glad that that's behind us, sistah!

Still remembering taping the tampon applicators horizontally to Sampson's (Bullmastiff) ears to train away from the bulldog rosebud look...craziness, I tell you...only showed him a few times though

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

heh! Now people are using things like foam insulation and breathe right strips for supports. I'm not sure what the rosebud look is??

Did you handle Sampson in the ring yourself?

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Think of a backwards @ -- more the look of an English Bulldog ear...when the "look" preferred is more the English Mastiff look to the ears. I wish I did do the handling...I would have really enjoyed that but all my tribe were young then I was too busy with them.

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Tampon applicators????
ROFLMAO!!!!
When I bred and showed German Shepherds, I used the insulated pipe covering to "fix" their ears.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ahhh that sounds much more appropriate then tampon applicators, doesn't it? LOL Better then what my son used them for. Found him one day (he was probably 3 or 4) "shooting" them...have mercy - remember him saying "Mommy deez make gwate wockets"

"Yappy Hour?"" Groovy, onewish1.Do we have a lot of dog show contestants here? I've seen tampons used in more ways than one, but wockets??? How did he get his hands on those, Chantell??

HollyAnnS, your digs sound terrific!! So you've got chickens for the time being. You are lucky, indeed.

I'm tending to my two birdbaths, making sure they have fresh clean water now. Want to catch the birdies using them. I hear so many songbirds around the yard lately. Gonna do some bird watching.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Foxnfirefly, My place wasn't and isn't fancy but it sure was a lot of fun. Come to think of it we still have a lot of fun. LOL
