Mid Atlantic gardens not complete without our furry pals

Landisburg, PA(Zone 6a)

Wondering what counts as a furry friend??? How about a bear on your porch???????? Had one last night..Have a large comtainer of sunflowers for the birds..that was spilt plus the niger seed bag ripped up...Hummer feeder tore down..Had a bird feeder gazebo it was on the ground...Large round suet feeder smashed flat and last was the garbage bag ripped open and spread around...Guess I better bring all that in tonight as he will probably be back for more seeds......Would of liked to see him in action but we had the ac on and heard nothing...

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Bluepoppy, Do you usually see bears? There have been several in the last couple of years wander down into the CampHill area and over on the other side of the river into the Susquehanna area. Hart had a go round with one back in the spring. You are right about bringing in your feeders, he found food once so he will be back.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Not sure about the friend aspect either but sure interesting to hear these bear encounters (that happen 50 + miles from MY house !)

Landisburg, PA(Zone 6a)

NO don't usually see bears although we hear about them being around alot...Guess its the time of year the mom kicks last years kids out and they are hunting a new home and hungary....

Shenandoah Valley, VA

You all remember my bear from earlier this spring? Well, I took all the birdfeeders down, have never put them back up. Then he started coming and tearing into the trash. I got a new trash container that was harder to open. A few days later, I found the trash container carried up into the back yard where he could pop it open at his leisure, trash scattered everywhere. I now have to keep the trash inside until I can get Marshall to take it to the transfer station.

I wish he'd find happier hunting grounds than my yard. I did look online and wolf pee - yes, actual pee from wolves which must be a great job gathering that stuff - is supposed to work. With my luck, it will get rid of the bears but draw wolves.

Got all going about bears and forgot - those are adorable goats, Ruby.

I meant "Post" a photo - it worked - however my spelling is a little lacking!

We just had a heck of a thunderstorm, wind, hail, downpours but it seems to be over for now. Before the storm, when it was getting windy I let my cat-Swirly girl- out onto the deck. She enjoyed chasing a few leaves but hightailed it back in when she felt raindrops. I bought a few of the hailstones in to show the younger cats but they were not too interested. They did not like the storm at all, especially the thunder.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

hart lol I've seen the guy on dirty jobs who picks up owl pellets, but wol f pee.......

jayne- sweet kitty!! we used to have an odd-eyed white with short hair. My son's nickname for all cats is Kittymins Bestinizer. He noticed Mr Pink and asked about him. Ps..by any chance do you make rosemary bread ? Used to know a woman named Jayne who did, gave her armfuls of trimmings and she gave back her "pitiful" leftovers after the market sales. I need to find a rosemary bread baker again, got lots of rosemary again.

catbird- wasn't that some storm! the sky was so weird, like towering thunderheads just over our heads

Falls Church, VA(Zone 7b)

WOW--everytime I come back here to look, someone has a new pet!! CONGRATS to you, Rubyw, on the lovely goats!! That is something!! ROTHFLMAO all over again, Sallyg!!! First thing I thought was "two Nubian goats."

Great Shepherd Dog, Flowerjen, and kitty, Ygf. Phoebe looks good, Rcn.

Bear was back last evening and in the can of sunflower seeds again....I went to go out about 8 and he was sitting on the porch....So we moved the sunflower in the big shed...Hope that gives him the incenative to move on..Wasn't a young bear either which I thought at first it probaby was.....He was pretty good sized.....Anyone want to take over feeding him?????

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Bear on the porch! scariest thing I ever saw on my porch was a possum

Odenton, MD(Zone 7b)

Bluepoppy, the bear sitting on the porch sounds a little too close to me, was he waiting for the morning feed? I hope puting the seed in the shed solves the problem for you.

Mr. Pink looks like Gus. Gus has blue eye and one gold eye, which is really striking.

Sally G - Sadly I do not make Rosemary Bread...but it sounds good!

Hart - Gus looks almost EXACTLY like Mr Pink! I adopted him from my au natural pet food store. I believe hi is a "Ragdoll" breed.
Take a look at this link with a description: http://fanciers.com/breed-faqs/ragdoll-faq.html

I fear this makes me sound like one of those crazy plant/cat people - but then again who am I talking too? ANd there are worse things that could happen!

Anyway - Mr Pink is by far the most amusing pet - we are really dog people but have always had a cat or two around. The description fits him to a tee....he's huge - not yet a year old - has a tendancy to flop when chased - and has a funny little meow - very small sound and he can't seem to purr. He has lovely long fur that doesn't matt it's almost like rabbit fur. He will sit on his back on my lap and let me clip his nails - obviously I'm aken with him!

I also have a lovely orchid I could tell you about!!! Ha.

I'm certain Gus is at least part Maine Coon because of the size and the funny little meow, which is typical Maine Coon. He's also soft and doesn't mat, but he loves getting furminatored.

Gus adopted us. Someone dropped him at SO's mom's house. SO looked at Gus, Gus looked at SO and suddenly we could hear "Some Enchanted Evening" and there were bluebirds with ribbons in their beaks flying around their heads.

Poor thing was starving. The idiots had left a too tight flea collar on him and he couldn't swallow anything any bigger than a bug. He made up for lost time once we took him home, though.

Monrovia, MD

Glad you found him Hart. I am a fan of Maine Coons as well - huge! I have no idea what MrP is - but the line in the ragdoll description that talked about flopping (hence "ragdoll") really fits. But he too has one gold eye and one crystal blue.

I hope that your Gus just got away from someone as oppossed to someone not caring for him and leaving a tight collar on. My sister had a cat that took off one night - they didn't see her again for like 4 months and when she came back she was a dishevelled mess - no way to know what had happened. She looked all over for that poor cat - posters and knocking on doors - just gone and then just back...wish the poor kitty could tell the tale! I know there are ignorant pet owners - but Gus is one cute cat - and they must have thought something of him to even get a flea collar....glad he has a good home...

Shenandoah Valley, VA

We're both lucky they have the two eye colors. White cats with two blue eyes are always deaf.

I'm sure he was dropped. It's a small town where she lives and no one made any attempt to find him.

Crozet, VA

Oh Holly, John and the brown goat whose name is Jethro have bonded big time already, from day one it seems. John says that he follows him around like one of our dogs follows me around all day long. Any of you who have carried on a conversation with John, know that he gets very long winded at times. Even though I don't have good access to the goats presently, I do hear stories from John's visits several times a day.

Tomorrow a girl friend is coming to visit and we already discussed going down to visit the goats. It will be intereresting to see how much they have grown in a week.

Mr. Pink and Gus both are very pretty cats. My mother had a cat that looked much like them and her name was January.

For everyone with bears, please keep them. I know that they roam the mountains here, but thankfully we don't hear too many stories about them coming too near to the homes.

Thank you to everyone who posted.

Very pretty Marshmallow, I use to have a Calico orange, black & white, It was a while ago pics would probably not be in the computer but I will look. Bubbles is a garden cat she is always out there keeping me company. Either swishing her tail in my face or getting under foot.

very cute picture. pretty marshmallow does the same to me. I think she helps keep the vole and mice population down so she earns her keep.
