I really miss having a dog, just have the cats now (unless you count the snake, frogs, tadpole and goldfish). Puppies are so cute, as are kittens but they do grow up, its great when they keep some of the playfulness and get over the chewing on everything.
Mid Atlantic gardens not complete without our furry pals
Isn't she a pretty girl. Is she a pit bull? I love pitties. Now, Jen, he won't be any less of a man! LOL He'll just feel less like hounding around.
And hopefully calm down a bit.
They adopted Ruby not knowing what type of mix she is but I def see terrier in her. She is a real sweetie.
Ruby is definitely part Parsons Russell. Commonly called Jack Russells, but I believe they've split the breed apart. Parson's are the original terrier that Parson Jack Russell bred, with longer legs and a shorter snout. The other Jack's have shorter legs & longer snouts. Here's our buddy Sam, he's a pure bred Parson's Russell. Ruby looks like she has Bull Terrier in her too.
I didn't realize Jack Russell ears look so much like pit bull ears. Her ears look just like pit bull ears but she must have gotten it from the Russell in her. She looks like a sweet girl.
Jen, I looked at Ruby's picture you posted and could not help notice the Poison Ivy growing there. I hope no one is sensitive to it, even petting Ruby after she runs through it could bring on the rash. Just thought I'd mention it.
I know with the rain we haven't be able to spray.
Good, Jen, Just didn't want your summer messed up dealing with a case of poison ivy.
Thanks, Chris.
Ruby & Sam are both adorable.... LG you are good.. I didn't see the PI.. had to go back and look again
smileymom, your Sam is adorable--As is Ruby the Pit-Parsons. Ouir neighbor has JackRussell, I'm gonna guess its the short leg type. When it gets loose, I don't know how they ever get a grip on her. And she's cute as all get out too.
I think Jack Russells are adorable. I'd love to get one, but after keeping up with Jello the past two years, my next dog is going to need to be a sofa cushion with legs.
Oh, Ruby & Sam have stolen my heart away!! I have never loved a dog more than I do Jack Russells!! They just cast a wicked spell on me. I am a bit busy right now but I will soon be a dog-owner once again when the fog clears. I am just enjoying this thread!! All the dogs are heartthrobs in their own right.
Hart, get a French poodle--they're smarter than a lot of college grads and will sit on the couch and tell you naughty stories.
Chantell, too cute. I should look for my old pic of Jamie with our dobie. They are wonderful family dogs, too.
Actually I was hoping for something a little smaller, Chantell. LOL I wouldn't mind getting a poodle but Marshall is dead set against it. I keep telling him they are tough, guy type hunting dogs, NOT frou frou girly dogs but he won't believe me. LOL
F nFF--we must have pics within 48 hrs of you acquiring a new pup. Its a sacred oath, remember we all took that right?
The curly poodle hair just does not go with a hunting dog image!
chantell super pic grains and all
Diane - might want to mention to Marshall to check out "Pit Bulls and other Tenacious Guard Dogs" by Carl Semencic. I bought that book 16 yrs ago...Chloe loves looking through it...LOL. Any way point being that, I believe, he has the standard poodle listed in this book.
Sally, Shame on you! Standard poodles were bred for the field. I believe the term field clip came from "macho" guys that didn't want to be seen in public with a dog having a perm- perm. Not so much as to ease the grooming of the dog. :-) LOL Ric
I've seen a standard poodle at the dog park==Just as energetic as the little yappers! A tall athletic and graceful beast.
Some one brought a mix they were told was poodle and bearded collie- I said- Pollie!
I love standard poodles! Super intelligent, fun dogs.
Hey, has Zeb tried the dog beach at Quiet Waters?
Nope - I'm too chicken to go to dog parks. :p
I've taken him to a private beach on the Bay, but not to QW. I want to go, but don't want to deal with the risks. waaah.
Poolies have got to be charming!! A standard poodle doesn't look sissy at all--maybe one of those small ones that ride a lady's arm do. I recall when I attended the Washington Antique show at the Armory some years ago tat this lady who looked affluet, walked in with a little white poodle on her arm and no one bothered her about bringing a dog in. That dog was so clean, so quiet and just stayed there it was like an accessory.
Sallyg, I promise to post pics when I get a puppy again. I almost got one recently--a white JRT with a black eye patch named "Slinky." But he was in DE for adoption and I hesitated. I just wasn't ready.
Qw dog beach is a sandy river beach very narrow. I went mid day last week and it was pretty busy. But the dogs seemed mostly more intersted in the water than they are each other as in the open run area. It was pretty tight and I guessed that discouraged wild running. We went the other evening (Wed) about 7 30 and were only a few there,
But hey if a private beach is available, thats awesome. Then too, Addy is just not a water dog anyway, won't swim or retrieve, just walks around biting the water. You're probably not missing much. Except a great view of South River
Scroll down to the second photo - the poodle who got lost in the 70s. LOL

One page I found said they started as water retrievers and were clipped so their fur wouldn't weigh them down in the water. I didn't know they were retrievers.
I'll have to look for that book, Chantell. I just think it's hilarious that he thinks poodles are sissy dogs.
Yes, they left the longer hair over the muscles to keep them warm/protect them.
We had a standard poodle when I was a teenager. She was an excellent swimmer and would toss balls into our pool then retrieve them just to entertain herself. Wonderful dog.

All that French poodle stuff of the fifties, and toy poodles, probably gave many people the image they have of poodles. The Lab poodle mix looked like one of those black water dogs, the official name of which I can't remember right now...
Portuguese Water Dog?
Yeah, possibly/ probably --curly black fur, not as tall as poodle.
I was just told there are two Labs, an Amer and an English. Seems the chubby ones I usually see with the short legs are English. You sure see a lot of breeds at the dog park. Not many Danes though.
I'm too chicken to go to dog parks.
wrightie, I'm with you! I took Phoebe to the beach in Maine where dogs were allowed to roam until 8 AM. My daughter was giving me a hard time because I was so paranoid and wouldn't unleash her to "run with the pack"! Phoebe is incredibly dog friendly but I wasn't so sure about the other dogs. I finally let her go even though I was still nervous and she had a blast!
Sally, this thread is getting pretty long - any chance we can get a new "Pup-date"? I've got a new furry pal to add, picked her up just yesterday morning :) No pictures yet but should have them by the end of the day!
Here you go, RCN, a continuation thread: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1013730/
Yes, it's the other dogs/owners that concern me, too! I generally just stick with letting him play with known dogs/owners, but will let loose once in a while. ;)
Thanks wrightie :) Just posted pics on the new thread!
